• How to use TDD in a not very "Testy" environment

  I work in a company where OOP is... well, not fobidden, but at least frowned upon as "too complex". My coworkers write lots of 100+ lines functions and they are usually all in a "funcs.inc.php" or "something.inc.php", if they use any functions at all, often they don't since copy-paste is faster. I would love to start using TDD at least for the code i write but as i have to interface with their code i can't see how to begin. It's not legacy code as they are actively developing it and i don't want to modify their code as i don't want to provoke conflicts. Which approach would you suggest, except for changing the company?

  I was trying to understand why Python is said to be a beautiful language. I was directed to the beauty of PEP 8... and it was strange. In fact it says that you can use any convention you want, just be consistent... and suddenly I found some strange things in the core library: request() getresponse() set_debuglevel() endheaders() http://docs.python.org/py3k/library/http.client.html The below functions are new in the Python 3.1. What part of PEP 8 convention is used here? popitem() move_to_end() http://docs.python.org/py3k/library/collections.html So my question is: is PEP 8 used in the core library, or not? Why is it like that? Is there the same situation as in PHP where I cannot just remember the name of the function because there are possible all ways of writing the name? Why PEP 8 is not used in the core library even for the new functions?

• How do I shim a Excel automation addin that implements IDTExtensibility2 but is not a com add in?

  I found this article http://blogs.officezealot.com/whitechapel/archive/2005/05/21/4728.aspx but the example given is a straight automation add-in that does not implement IDTExtensibility2. My add in implements IDTExtensibility2 to get access to the excel object model but is not installed as a COM add in so RegisterFunction for example will called when one of the add in functions is first used not when the excel starts as in the case of the a COM add in. Will this method described in the link above work in my case also? I tried version 2.3.1 of the shim wizard which seems to have support for automations add-ins (it has a check box for automation add ins in the metadata import process). The generated shim runs (I can see breakpoints being hit in the debugger), but my functions no longer work (i get #NAME). The shims is installed as a COM add in and loads when excel starts so I suspect it's not doing what I want.

• Executing Secondary Applications

  I have an application I am attempting to make "portable". The application contains a lot of secondary utility functions that I would like to execute on external files(from the app). I tried adding them in the build process but I didn't get any "Executables" for them(just the main one and a few others). Is there a way to get these to excute? They are basically command line utility functions to process some text files but use large files in the distribution and are also used by the main application. Thanks

• C++ Project compiles as static lib, fails (linker error) as dynamic lib. why??

  Hi All. I've a VS2008 native C++ project, that I wish to compile as a DLL. It only references one external library (log4cplus.lib), and uses its functions. (also uses log4cplus's .h files , naturally). When I try to compile my project as a static library, it succeeeds. When I try as DLL, it fails : 1>MessageWriter.obj : error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol "public: static class log4cplus::Logger __cdecl log4cplus::Logger::getInstance(class std::basic_string<wchar_t,struct std::char_traits<wchar_t>,class std::allocator<wchar_t> > const &)" (?getInstance@Logger@log4cplus@@SA?AV12@ABV?$basic_string@_WU?$char_traits@_W@std@@V?$allocator@_W@2@@std@@@Z) referenced in function "class log4cplus::Logger __cdecl Log(void)" (?Log@@YA?AVLogger@log4cplus@@XZ) There are 4 more errors just like this related to functions within log4cplus.lib. • Django, javascript and code reuse problem

  Hi, I have some sort of a design problem with my Django AJAX application. I have a template where I initialize js variable from django context variable like so: var test = "{{ test }}"; This variable is than used in a number of js functions that are needed for interface to work properly. So now I'm trying to reuse some content from this page in another page that loads it dynamically on some user interaction using jQuery.load(..), and I don't see any way how I can initialize that variable, so js functions don't work now. Is there any solution for this or may be I'm doing it wrong? Thanks.

• Intra-Unicode "lean" Encoding Converters

  Windows provides encoding conversion functions ("MultiByteToWideChar" and "WideCharToMultiByte") which are capable of UTF-8 to/from UTF-16 conversions, among other things. But I've seen people offer home-grown 30 to 40 line functions that claim also to perform UTF-8 / UTF-16 encoding conversions. My question is, how reliable are such tiny converters? Can such a tiny amount of code handle problems such as converting a UTF-16 surrogate pair (such as ) into a UTF-8 single four byte sequence (rather than making the mistake of converting into a pair of three byte sequences)? Can they correctly spot "unpaired" surrogate input, and provide an error? In short, are such tiny converters mere toys, or can they be taken seriously? For that matter, why does unicode.org seemingly offer no advice on an algorithm for accomplishing such conversions?

  I'm considering switching to mysqli for all my php projects. The way my code is written (I run very simple websites and built my own basic framework which I use across all of them) I shouldn't have too many problems modifying the functions and classes. However, i've only heard positive things about prepared statements, bar a few grumblings about the php functions available, most notably the lack of a simple replacement for using mysql_fetch_array in a while. This sounds a bit too good to be true, so I wondered if anyone could highlight some of the issues with using prepared statements, such as speed and resource usage.

  I have a script which creates a drag-and-drop uploader on the page from a div. My DIV will look something like <div class="well uploader" data-type="image" data-callback="product.addimage" data-multi="1"></div> Then I'll have a function something like var product = new function(){ /* Some random stuff */ this.addimage = function(image){ alert('W00T! I HAZ AN IMAGE!'); } /* More random stuff */ } When the upload is complete, I need to call the function in data-callback (In this example, product.addimage). I know with global functions you can just do window[callback]() but I'm not sure the best way to do this with functions under objects. My first thought was to do something like* var obj = window; var parts = callback.split('.'); for(part in parts){ obj = obj[parts[part]]; } obj(); but that seems a bit dirty, is there a better way without using eval because eval is evil? I haven't tested this so I have no idea if it will work

• Workflow for statistical analysis and report writing

  Does anyone have any wisdom on workflows for data analysis related to custom report writing? The use-case is basically this: Client commissions a report that uses data analysis, e.g. a population estimate and related maps for a water district. The analyst downloads some data, munges the data and saves the result (e.g. adding a column for population per unit, or subsetting the data based on district boundaries). The analyst analyzes the data created in (2), gets close to her goal, but sees that needs more data and so goes back to (1). Rinse repeat until the tables and graphics meet QA/QC and satisfy the client. Write report incorporating tables and graphics. Next year, the happy client comes back and wants an update. This should be as simple as updating the upstream data by a new download (e.g. get the building permits from the last year), and pressing a "RECALCULATE" button, unless specifications change. At the moment, I just start a directory and ad-hoc it the best I can. I would like a more systematic approach, so I am hoping someone has figured this out... I use a mix of spreadsheets, SQL, ARCGIS, R, and Unix tools. Thanks! PS: Below is a basic Makefile that checks for dependencies on various intermediate datasets (w/ ".RData" suffix) and scripts (".R" suffix). Make uses timestamps to check dependencies, so if you 'touch ss07por.csv', it will see that this file is newer than all the files / targets that depend on it, and execute the given scripts in order to update them accordingly. This is still a work in progress, including a step for putting into SQL database, and a step for a templating language like sweave. Note that Make relies on tabs in its syntax, so read the manual before cutting and pasting.   I've always wondered the best way to automate use of a GUI in windows. When I was about 15, I wrote a little application that used some simple windows api functions to automatically click on certain locations on the screen based on a script. This could be used to automate GUI apps, but surely it's not the best way. So, my question is: What's the best way to automate use of a GUI in windows? Are there certain windows API functions that would be beneficial? If the program were to crash, how could you detect that? Thanks!

  I have designed a class with sqlClient.SqlCommand wrappers to implement such functionality as automatic retries on timeout, Async (thread safety), error logging, and some sql server functions like WhoAmI. I've used some strongly typed datasets mainly for display purposes only, but I'd like to have the same database functionality that I use with my class. Is there an interface I can implement or a way to hook my command/connection class into the dataset at design or runtime? Or would I need to somehow write a wrapper for the dataset to implement these types of functions? if this is the only option could it be made generic to wrap anything that inherits from dataset?

• State pattern: Why doesn't the context class implement or inherit the State abstract interface/class

  I'm reading about the State pattern. I have only just begun, so of course I begin by reading the entire Wikipedia article on it. I noticed that both of the examples in the article have some base abstract class or Java interface for a generic State's methods/functions. Then there are some states which inherit from the base and implement those methods/functions in different ways. Then there's a Context class which has a private member of type State and which, at any time, can be equal to an instance of one of the implementations. That context class also implements the same methods, and passes them onto the current state instance, and then has an additional method to change the state (or depending on design I understand the change of state could be a reaction to one of the implemented methods). Why doesn't this context class specifically "extend" or "implement" the generic State base class/interface?

• Determining the magnitude of a certain frequency on the iPhone

  I'm wondering what's the easiest/best way to determine the magnitude of a given frequency in a sound. It's my understanding that a FFT function will return the magnitudes of all frequencies in a signal. I'm wondering if there is any shortcut I could use if I'm only concerned about a specific frequency. I'll be using the iPhone mic to record the audio. My guess is that I'll be using the Audio Queue Services for recording since I don't need to record the audio to a file. I'm using SDK 4.0, so I can use any of the functions defined in the Accelerate framework (e.g. FFT functions) if needed. Update: I updated the question to be more clear as per Conrad's suggestion.

  I am just starting out with PHP, and I am wondering if there is a way to add an anonymous function to a class instance. For instance, lets say... class A{ public B; } $c = new A(); //This is where I am getting a little confused... //The following wont work $c->B = function(){echo('HelloWorld');}; $c->B(); What I am hoping to do is reuse the same spit of code in a great number of different applications, and make it so that I can just 'swap-out' and replace functions in specific instances. • Is there a way to automatically update the documentation in an R package?

  I used 'package.skeleton()' to generate .Rd help files a few months ago. I have edited these files, and I have also changed the functions, removed some functions, added others. Is there a function that automates updating the Rd files? update A nice package was just released called Rd2roxygen, it is described by the author Yihui Xie on his blog. As the name implies, this package allows one to retroactively insert documentation currently contained in .Rd into .R files. Sounds like a promising approach for both learning roxygen and for converting packages currently in development to R packages. Woo hoo. Thanks Yihui!

  Hi, I just want advice on whether I could improve structure around a particular class which handles all disk access functions The structure of my program is that I have a class called Disk which gets data from flatfiles and databases on a, you guessed it, hard disk drive. I have functions like LoadTextFileToStringList, WriteStringToTextFile, DeleteLineInTextFile etc which are kind of "generic methods" In the same class I also have some more specific methods such as GetXFromDisk where X might be a particular field in a database table/query. Should I separate out the generic methods from the specialised. Should I make another class which inherits the generic methods. At the moment my class is static as there is no need to have an internal state of the class. I'm not really OOPing am I? Thanks Thomas

  Hi, so I wanted to try my first CLR project in Visual C++. So I created console project, but since every tutorial I found about CLR programming was using C#, or windows forms, I just tried writing standart c++ Hello Word app using iostream (I think code isnt needed in this case) but I though it will give me some compile error, since iostream uses precompiled functions, and CLR app compiles into MSIL. I assumed that CLR programming using C++ means just using C++ syntax, but different functions for I/O and so. So, basicly, what I want to ask is, can any native console C++ app be compiled into MSIL and run by .NET framework?

• WordPress Problem with enqueing a script

  I am trying to enqueue a script from the functions.php file for a custom theme. here is the code I am using: wp_enqueue_script('innerfade','correct/path/to/innerfade.js', array('jquery'), '', false); I also tried to hardcode from the the functions file like so: ?> <script type='text/javascript' src="correct/path/to/innerfade.js"></script> <?php and both are outputting the following: correct/path/to/innerfade.js'?ver=2.9.2 so It doesnt seem to be a wp_enqueue_script problem What I cannot seem to figure is where the hell is the comma after the .js is coming from, it is causing a dead link hence not loading the script, anyone have any ideas??
