• How to get pen input to draw?

  I just got a crappy little Hyundai pen input module To use on a normal Windows 7 HP laptop, it works quite well with the Hyundai software, but that's in Chinese, and the input only stays on the screen for a second. When I try to use it in Paint, it just draws a dot, and switches back to an unclicked state, similarly, it's impossible to move a window. Is there ant way I can keep the click held down when the pen is touching the pad in order to draw, or is there any third party software anyone knows of that can do this?

  If I want to send someone a piece of my screen this is what I currently do: PrtScr or Alt+PrtScr Open Paint.NET Paste the screen shot Make a selection Crop image to selection Save image to some location - and remember it! Go to some image hosting site (there are plenty of them in the days of Twitter) Click their "Browse" button Browse for the image if I happened to remember the location where I stored it :) Upload the image and obtain the link which I can share This is simply too many steps. I don't usually mind doing steps 1 to 5 but especially steps 6 and 9 are annoying. Jing is pretty close to what I'm looking for but I find their horrible URLs unbearable. If there was something with similar functionality but better or pluggable hosting, that would be great.

• Having trouble with EPSON Stylus SX130 scanner

  I am trying to scan files with an EPSON Stylus SX130 on windows 7 x64. When i plug in the printer, windows automatically find drivers for printing, but not for scanning. So i go to the manufacturer website to download the drivers, select windows 7 64-bit and download drivers for EPSON Scan. The install works fine, but when i try to scan a file (eg: from paint or Windows fax and scan), the folowing message pops up and freezes the application : the progress bar plays the animation forever and the application does not respond. I then have no choice to kill the application with the task manager. Do you have an idea of what's going on ? How can i fix the problem, ie: how do i get the scanner actually scan files without freezing ? I tried to install the driver from the CD given in the printer package, and got the same problem. The only help i found so far (the error seems somewhat related) is this : Install a xp virtual machine and run it in there

• Columnstore Case Study #1: MSIT SONAR Aggregations

  Preamble This is the first in a series of posts documenting big wins encountered using columnstore indexes in SQL Server 2012 & 2014.  Many of these can be found in this deck along with details such as internals, best practices, caveats, etc.  The purpose of sharing the case studies in this context is to provide an easy-to-consume quick-reference alternative. Why Columnstore? If we’re looking for a subset of columns from one or a few rows, given the right indexes, SQL Server can do a superlative job of providing an answer. If we’re asking a question which by design needs to hit lots of rows—DW, reporting, aggregations, grouping, scans, etc., SQL Server has never had a good mechanism—until columnstore. Columnstore indexes were introduced in SQL Server 2012. However, they're still largely unknown. Some adoption blockers existed; yet columnstore was nonetheless a game changer for many apps.  In SQL Server 2014, potential blockers have been largely removed & they're going to profoundly change the way we interact with our data.  The purpose of this series is to share the performance benefits of columnstore & documenting columnstore is a compelling reason to upgrade to SQL Server 2014. App: MSIT SONAR Aggregations At MSIT, performance & configuration data is captured by SCOM. We archive much of the data in a partitioned data warehouse table in SQL Server 2012 for reporting via an application called SONAR.  By definition, this is a primary use case for columnstore—report queries requiring aggregation over large numbers of rows.  New data is refreshed each night by an automated table partitioning mechanism—a best practices scenario for columnstore. The Win Compared to performance using classic indexing which resulted in the expected query plan selection including partition elimination vs. SQL Server 2012 nonclustered columnstore, query performance increased significantly.  Logical reads were reduced by over a factor of 50; both CPU & duration improved by factors of 20 or more.  Other than creating the columnstore index, no special modifications or tweaks to the app or databases schema were necessary to achieve the performance improvements.  Existing nonclustered indexes were rendered superfluous & were deleted, thus mitigating maintenance challenges such as defragging as well as conserving disk capacity. Details The table provides the raw data & summarizes the performance deltas. Summary For DW, reports, & other BI workloads, columnstore often provides significant performance enhancements relative to conventional indexing.  I have documented here, the first in a series of reports on columnstore implementations, results from an initial implementation at MSIT in which logical reads were reduced by over a factor of 50; both CPU & duration improved by factors of 20 or more.  Subsequent features in this series document performance enhancements that are even more significant.

• How can I load an image directly into the Windows clipboard from the command line?

  My dad asked me how he could script the pasting/inclusion of images in various applications. I'm sure I could script out some quick <img src=... HTML but I believe he's also looking to do this in Windows GUI applications like Word or Outlook. So, how could I script a process with the following inputs and outputs: load_image_into_clipboard_script.cmd sample_file.jpg Clipboard now contains the aforementioned image file, just as if I'd e.g. opened it in Paint and done a Select All - Copy. I noticed there's a clip.exe utility with Vista/Win2003 and up; perhaps that will be a useful intermediary?

• Has anyone experienced "Screen Painting" issues with RealVNC?

  I've just setup remote access to a Windows XP box using RealVNC. When the user runs an app, they expierence issues with "screen painting" - the screen doesn't paint well, except for a radius around the mouse cursor. The app is displaying a calendar. I am not sure what it is written in (think it is a .NET app) Have no problems getting/staying connected. Initially it seemed to be working fine. I have looked through all of the settings as far as compression and speed. I can replicate the issue from more than 1 location. The hosting Internet connection is DSL.

• Big level objects collision system for 2d game

  I read many variants today and get some knowledge in general, so here is a steps of mine thoughts in pictures (horrible paint.net ones). We need to develop grid system, so we check only thing near, perform simple check to cut out deep check, and at - last deep check like per-pixel collision check. Step 1 - Let p1, p2 are some sprites lets first just check with circle collision - because large distance between p1, p2 this fails and of course so we don't need test more deeply. But if we have not 2, but 20 objects, why we need to even circle test something so far outside of our view. Step 2 - Add basic column system, now we don't bother with p2 if it's in a column far from p1 column, so we even don't do circle test. But p3 is in the same col, so let do circle test, which of course will fail. Step 3 - Lets improve column system to the grid system with grid cell size just like p1, p2, p3 collision boxes, so we cut out things much top or below p1. And this is all great until comes BIG OBJs which is some kind of platforms. They are much bigger then grid cell. Circle test for will be successful, but deep check for whole big obj will fail And that the part I can't get. How do I store the grid position of big object? Like 4 grid coords for big object vertexes? And if one of them close to p1 do circle check for centre of big object then a deep one if succeed? Am I do it wrong? My possible solution:

  Ever since Windows 2000, I have always had the need to replicate data to multiple endpoints with the same content. Until DFS was introduced, the method of thinking was to either manually copy the data location by location, or to batch script it with xcopy and schedule a task. Even though this worked (and still does today), it was cumbersome, and intensive on the network, especially when dealing with larger amounts of data. Then along came robocopy, as an internal tool written by an enterprising programmer at Microsoft. We used it quite a bit, especially when we could not use DFS in the early days. It was received so well, it made it into the public realm. At least now we could have the ability to determine what files had changed and only replicate those. Well, over time there has been evolution of this ideal. DFS is obviously the Windows enterprise class service to do this, along with BrancheCache..however you don’t always need or want the power of DFS, especially when it comes to small datacenter installations, or remote offices. I have specific data sets that are on closed or restricted networks, that either have a security need for this, or are in remote countries where bandwidth is a premium. FOr this, I use the latest evolution for one off replication names Synctoy. Synctoy is from Microsoft, seemingly released in 2009, that wraps a nice GUI around setting up a paired set of folders (remember the mobile briefcase from Windows 98?), and allowing you the choice of synchronization methods. 1 way, or 2 way. Simply create a paired set of folders on the source and destination, choose your options for content, exclude any file types you don’t want to replicate, and click run. Scheduling is even easier. MS has included a wrapper for doing just this so all you enter in your task schedule in the SynToyCMD.exe, a –R as an argument, and the time schedule. No more complicated command lines or scripts.   I find this especially useful when I use MS backup to back up a system volume, but only want subsets of backup information of a data share and ONLY when that dataset has changed. Not relying on full backups and incremental. An example of this is my application installation master share. I back this up with SyncToy because I do not need multiple backup copies..one copy elsewhere suffices to back it up. At home, very useful for your pictures, videos, music, ect..the backup is online and ready to access, not waiting for you to restore a backup file, and no need to institute a domain simply to have DFS.'   Do note there is a risk..if you accidently delete a file and do not catch this before the next sync, then depending on your SyncToy settings, you can indeed lose that file as the destination updates..so due diligence applies. I make it a rule to sync manly one way…I use my master share for making changes, and allow the schedule to follow suit. • How can I disable recent documents in Unity?

  How do I disable the tracking and display of recently opened files (and whatever else is remembered) in a default installation of Ubuntu 11.10? (Note that this is not a duplicate of How can I keep recent files from appearing in Unity?, since that question and its answers are concerned with temporary and specific filtering. I want to disable it completely for a single user account.) Okay, to deflect the inevitable and expand on my motivation... While trawling the usual forums and Google results for a solution, it (unsurprisingly) seems that the near-universal use cases for this request are either browsing porn or Warhammer research. And the obvious solution to this is to create another user account to contain all evidence. However, this is not why I'm asking, and I don't say that to get all high and mighty about it, it's because this answer won't help. (Even though I really don't have any interest in Warhammer, and I have no idea how that paint pot and brush ended up in my drawer, no that's not glue on my thumb, etc.) My actual use case is that I use my personal laptop for presentations in different circles of my life. I have a user account set up with all the settings I like for presentations (shortcuts, small launcher, default associations, etc). But I don't want an accidental keystroke (or the find dialog) to display other recent presentations I've given, or the files I used in composing the presentation, or whatever. I also don't want to have to recreate this profile for every single presentation I might give. I just want a nice little isolated, memoryless, clean corner of my notebook for public display.

• People != Resources

  Ken Tabor’s blog post “They Are not Resources – We Are People” struck a chord with me.  I distinctly remember hearing the term “resources” within the context of “people” for the first time back in the late 90’s.  I was in a meeting at Compaq and a manager had been faced with some new scope for an IT project he was managing.  His response was that he needed more “resources” in order to get the job done.  As I knew the timeline for the project was fixed and the process for acquiring additional funding would almost certainly extend beyond his expected delivery date, I wondered what he meant.  After the meeting, I asked him what he meant… his response was that he needed some more “bodies” to get the job done.  For a minute, my mind whirred… why is it so difficult to simply say “people?”  This particular manager was neither a bad person nor a bad manager… quite the contrary.  I respected him quite a bit and still do.  Over time, I began to notice that he was what could be termed an “early adopter” of many “Business speak” terms – such as “sooner rather than later,” “thrown a curve,” “boil the ocean” etcetera.  Over time, I’ve discovered that much of this lexicon can actually be useful, though cliché and overused.  For example, “Boil the ocean” does serve a useful purpose in distilling a lot of verbiage and meaning into three simple words that paint a clear mental picture.  The term “resources” would serve a similar purpose if it were applied to the concept of time, funding, or people.  The problem is that this never happened.  “Resources”, “bodies”, “ICs” (individual contributors)… this is what “people” have become in the IT business world.  Why?  We’re talking about simple word choices here.  Why have human beings been deliberately dehumanized and abstracted in this manner? What useful purpose does it serve other than to demean and denigrate?

• To decide where to crop an image, how can I highlight it's most compressible areas?

  I'm looking to get the most compression out of each of the most popular image formats, such as, JPEG, PNG, GIF, etc. Ideally, this would be a tool, or a series of transforms that could be performed (perhaps using a macro and then discarded) in popular image editors (Paint.NET/PaintShopPro/PhotoShop/GIMP) to highlight areas which will compress less. Alternatively, what rules of thumb can be used other than reducing colours (for PNG/GIF), reducing image dimensions, avoiding high detail areas... I'm not asking for help deciding what format to use for a particular image type as I think this is fairly common knowledge, i.e. diagram and images with few colours = PNG/GIF, photographs = JPEG.

• startx error no desktop manager

  I have Backtrack 5R2 KDE. I started recovery mode and did a failsafe xorg configuration. After that, I cannot load the KDE manager when I enter the startx command after logging in. Whenever I do a startx command (as root), the result resembles the following: This is not the actual output (I just drew this with MS paint because I cannot do a printscreen). The screen is just black with the icon in the upper left corner. The other pop-up menu appears when left-clicking the mouse. I tried the cp xorg.conf.failsafe xorg.conf advice from other websites with no luck. I have also tried the 'reconfigure option(s)' form the recovery mode with no success.

• Need a good quality bitmap rotation algorithm for Android

  I am creating a kaleidoscopic effect on an android tablet. I am using the code below to rotate a slice of an image, but as you can see in the image when rotating a bitmap 60 degrees it distorts it quite a lot (red rectangles) – it is smudging the image! I have set dither and anti-alias flags but it does not help much. I think it is just not a very sophisticated bitmap rotation algorithm. canvas.save(); canvas.rotate(angle, screenW/2, screenH/2); canvas.drawBitmap(picSlice, screenW/2, screenH/2, pOutput); canvas.restore(); So I wonder if you can help me find a better way to rotate a bitmap. It does not have to be fast, because I intend to use a high quality rotation only when I want to save the screen to the SD card - I would redraw the screen in memory before saving. Do you know any comprehensible or replicable algorithm for bitmap rotation that I could programme or use as a library? Or any other suggestion? EDIT: The answers below made me think if Android OS had bilinear or bicubic interpolation option and after some search I found that it does have its own version of it called FilterBitmap. After applying it to my paint pOutput.setFilterBitmap(true); I get much better result

• GameStateManagement and inputs not being recognized

  EDIT: I've removed a bit of code from the input class to make this more readable, and updated my StartScreen class, which is now at the bottom. I have the same issues though, but they are explained in my comments on the bottom of this page. It won't let me paste my additional code here (the format comes out crazy), so I've linked to pastebin with the code pastebin I've been trying to implement the MS provided GameStateManagement sample with my game, but it has proven a bit difficult. Really, I'm using Oneksoft's Starter Kit, which uses the MS provided sample, so they are identical, except for my splash screen. I'm able to get the splash screen to launch, where it informs the player to press A to advance the screen, but this doesn't seem to accept any of my inputs. I’ve also added Console.Writeline(“Pressing A”) under the IsMenuPressed method in Input.cs to verify that it is getting called, but for some reason it is constantly spamming my log, rather than just appearing each time I press it. Not sure why this is happening. • XDMCP is slow any ideas? (looking for alternative remote desktops)

  I've been used to using RDP on Windows to remote to machines, and I've got an asus eee 701 which I want to use to do some *nix programming on. While the eee is a lovely little machine the screen and keyboard are a little small to use for lots of programming. I've tried using Xming (the free version) to remote login into the eee from my desktop using XDMCP (or even using a ssh session as a straight X11 server and no desktop on the eee) the whole thing seems seriously slow over wifi the initial desktop takes at least 5 seconds to paint (might even be 10 seconds I haven't actually timed it). So my real question is what do other folks use for remote control with a GUI for their *nix boxes? I am finding it hard to believe the performance is so bad over a wifi network (It makes the Mac IIs I used to use a college in 1988 seem fast) or is this just a problem with Xming and using say the Cygwin X11 server would be better.
