Best ways to teach a beginner to program?

Original Question I am currently engaged in teaching my brother to program. He is a total beginner, but very smart. (And he actually wants to learn). I've noticed that some of our sessions have gotten bogged down in minor details, and I don't feel I've been very organized. (But the answers to this post have helped a lot.) What can I do better to teach him effectively? Is there a logical order that I can use to run through concept by concept? Are there complexities I should avoid till later? The language we are working with is Python, but advice in any language is welcome. Uploadify plugin doesn't call Java Servlet

Hello,i just started using Uploadify flash plugin instead of standard HTML UI. And met the next problem: when I click "Upload Files" link,that progress is shown and "completed" status is appeared, but in reality - it didn't happened anything,Java Servlet isn't called from backend. How can I line up WPF items in a Horizontal WrapPanel so they line up based on an arbitrary vertical

I'm trying to create a View in WPF and having a hard time figuring out how to set it up. Here's what I'm trying to build: My ViewModel exposes an IEnumerable property called Items Each item is an event on a timeline, and each one implements ITimelineItem The ViewModel for each item has it's own DataTemplate to to display it I want to display all the items on the timeline connected by a line. I'm thinking a WrapPanel inside of a ListView would work well for this. However, the height of each item will vary depending on the information it displays. Some items will have graphic objects right on the line (like a circle or a diamond, or whatever), and some have annotations above or below the line. So it seems complicated to me. It seems that each item on the timeline has to render its own segment of the line. That's fine. But the distance between the top of the item to the line (and the bottom of the item to the line) could vary. If one item has the line 50 px down from the top and the next item has the line 100 px down from the top, then the first item needs 50 px of padding so that the line segments add up. I think I could solve that problem, however, we only need to add padding if these two items are on the same line in the WrapPanel! Let's say there are 5 items and only room on the screen for 3 across... the WrapPanel will put the other two on the next line. That's ok, but that means only the first 3 need to pad together, and the last 2 need to pad together. This is what's giving me a headache. Is there another approach I could look at?

Sort multiple columns while using a bindingsource or bindinglist

Hi everyone. I have a problem I am trying to fix and it's sorting a DataGridView on multiple columns. I have read that this option is not a feature built-in the DataGridView and I have to implement it. I have found multiple solutions, but none quite got to do the work. I'm also quite a newbie in C# and I don't know much of the .Net library. I have also read on the MSDN site for info on different classes that might be of use, but no success. Now, let's get to the point. I have a DataGridView, with a BindingList (originally, a BindingSource) that I want to sort, but by multiple keys. My DataGrid has 9 columns and the user should be able to sort on any column. For example, let's say my Datagrid has 3 columns, named : Index, ID, Name. The user wants to sort by Name, implicitly, the next order would be Index and then ID. So, in case 2 names are identical, Index should be the next sort option. Any ideas how this can be made?

Storing info in a PostgreSQl database issue

Ok I am making a registry for my website. Cannot use READPAST in snapshot isolation mode

I have a process which is called from multiple threads which does the following: Start transaction Select unit of work from work table with by finding the next row where IsProcessed=0 with hints (UPDLOCK, HOLDLOCK, READPAST) Process the unit of work (C# and SQL stored procedures) Commit the transaction The idea of this is that a thread dips into the pool for the "next" piece of work, and processes it, and the locks are there to ensure that a single piece of work is not processed twice. (the order doesn't matter). All this has been working fine for months. Until today that is, when I happened to realise that despite enabling snapshot isolation and making it the default at the database level, the actual transaction creation code was manually setting an isolation level of "ReadCommitted". I duly changed that to "Snapshot", and of course immediately received the "You can only specify the READPAST lock in the READ COMMITTED or REPEATABLE READ" error message. Oops! The main reason for locking the row was to "mark the row" in such a way that the "mark" would be removed when the transaction that applied the mark was committed and the lock seemed to be the best way to do this, since this table isn't read otherwise except by these threads. If I were to use the IsProcessed flag as the lock, then presumably I would need to do the update first, and then select the row I just updated, but I would need to employ the NOLOCK flag to know whether any other thread had set the flag on a row. All sounds a bit messy. The easiest option would be to abandon the snapshot isolation mode altogether, but the design of step #3 requires it. Any bright ideas on the best way to resolve this problem? Converting QXmlItem to QtDomElement or similar?

Hello everyone. I'm parsing a fairly complicated XML file of the following structure: <root> ... ... <item> <subitem id="1"/> <text> text1 </text> </item> <item> <subitem id="2"/> <text> text2 </text> </item> ... <item> ... </item> ...</root> It's pretty crude but you get my drift I hope. I'm primarily interested in "item" nodes. So I wrote the following code (directly out of the Qt's online manual): QXmlQuery query; query.setQuery("//item/"); QXmlResultItems result; query.evaluateTo(&result); QXmlItem item(result.next()); while (!item.isNull()) { if (item.isNode()) { // WHAT DO I DO NOW? } item = result.next(); } Now, QXmlItem appears to represent two concepts, a literal value (like a string) or a Node, (which is what item.isNode() is doing). Unfortunately, I can't grasp how to convert the QXmlItem to something that will query-able again. In particular from the example above I'd like to grab the "id" attribute, and the text element. Can I do this using the XQuery approach, or am I way off base here? Any advice? Thanks!

Perl unpack in list context

A common 'Perlism' is generating a list as something to loop over in this form: for($str=~/./g) { print "the next character from \"$str\"=$_\n"; } In this case the global match regex returns a list that is one character in turn from the string $str, and assigns that value to $_ Instead of a regex, split can be used in the same way or 'a'..'z', map, etc. I am investigating unpack to generate a field by field interpretation of a string. I have always found unpack to be less straightforward to the way my brain works, and I have never really dug that deeply into it. As a simple case, I want to generate a list that is one character in each element from a string using unpack (yes -- I know I can do it with split(//,$str) and /./g but I really want to see if unpack can be used this way...) Obviously, I can use a field list for unpack that is unpack("A1" x length($str), $str) but is there some other way that kinda looks like globbing? ie, can I call unpack(some_format,$str) either in list context or in a loop such that unpack will return the next group of character in the format group until $str is exausted? Creating a multi-step process with mysql and php

Hi, I am working on a script which allows users to create a stepped process. The steps will consist of sending visitors to urls where they will fill out a form then be directed to the next step the user has created. Each user can create as many steps as they wish and the url for each step will be unique. I am not sure if I am doing this in the correct/most efficient way so I have a few questions about this. Before I begin here is a simple version of my table structure: step_id user_id step_url step_order 1 1 example.com?step=1 1 2 2 test.com?step=1 1 3 1 example.com?step=3 2 A visitor will be directed to step_url: example.com?step=1 by user_id: 1 On this page there will be a form which contains a hidden field with the value of the step_id like this: <input type="hidden" name="step_id" value="1"> Once the visitor has filled out this form it will be processed by my script at a url similar to: http://mysite.com/form-process.php Once the form has been submitted I then need to direct the visitor to the next step my user has created. I would currently do this using code similar to this: SELECT step_url FROM table WHERE step_order='$current_step_order'+1 Here are my questions about this: Is this the best most efficient way to accomplish this? Or is there a better way? As the step_id column is auto increment...how would I increment the order column by 1 each time a user inserts a new step? Thanks for taking the time to read this. Paul

Disco/MapReduce: Using results of previous iteration as input to new iteration

Currently am implementing PageRank on Disco. As an iterative algorithm, the results of one iteration are used as input to the next iteration. I have a large file which represents all the links, with each row representing a page and the values in the row representing the pages to which it links. For Disco, I break this file into N chunks, then run MapReduce for one round. As a result, I get a set of (page, rank) tuples. I'd like to feed this rank to the next iteration. However, now my mapper needs two inputs: the graph file, and the pageranks. I would like to "zip" together the graph file and the page ranks, such that each line represents a page, it's rank, and it's out links. Since this graph file is separated into N chunks, I need to split the pagerank vector into N parallel chunks, and zip the regions of the pagerank vectors to the graph chunks This all seems more complicated than necessary, and as a pretty straightforward operation (with the quintessential mapreduce algorithm), it seems I'm missing something about Disco that could really simplify the approach. Any thoughts?

App crashes only after second execution only in Release configuration

Hey all, i know this is probably not an easy question to answer, as it's hard to describe on my hand. I have an app that runs without problems on the device in Debug Configuration (also multiple times). Once I put it into Release Configuration (which I need before publishing?), the app starts without problems and I can proceed to the next page, where I show an core-plot graph. BUT only if I run it from xcode. As soon as I end the App and start it again, it opens without problems, but on the next page, it crashes. Android: Creating a Scrollable Layout

I'm trying to create a "scrollable" layout in Android. Even using developers.android.com, though, I feel a little bit lost at the moment. I'm somewhat new to Java, but not so much that I feel I should be having these issues--being new to Android is the bigger problem right now. The layout I'm trying to create should scroll in a sort of a "grid". I THINK what I'm looking for is the Gallery view, but I'm really lost as to how to implement it at the moment. I want it to "snap" to center the frame, like in the actual Gallery application. Essentially, if I had a photo gallery of 9 pictures, the idea is to scroll between them up/down AND side to side, in a 3x3 manner. Doesn't need to dynamically adjust, or anything like that, I just want a grid I can scroll through. I'm also not asking for anyone to give me explicit code for it--I'm trying to learn, more than anything. But pointing me in the right direction for helpful layout programming resources would be greatly appreciated, and confirming if it's a Gallery view I'm looking for would also be really helpful. EDIT: To clarify, the goal is to have ONE item on screen at a time. If you scroll between one item and the next, the previous one leaves the screen, and the new one snaps into place. So if it were a photo gallery, each spot on the grid would take up the entire screen size, approximately, and would be flung out of the viewable area when you slide across to the next photo, in either direction. (Photos are just an example for illustration purposes)

UIScrollView without paging but with touchesmoved

I have a UIScrollView that I use to display PDF pages in. I don't want to use paging (yet). I want to display content based on touchesmoved event (so after horizontal swipe). This works (sort of), but instead of catching a single swipe and showing 1 page, the swipe seems to gets broken into 100s of pieces and 1 swipe acts as if you're moving a slider! I have no clue what am I doing wrong. My problem now is that I would like to offer to users a function to update an existing record in SQL. As each row on this table has a unique id columne. There is a column call UID which is the primary key. Copy Selective Data from Database to Invoice, Based on Certain Criteria

For starters, here is an example of a microsoft excel database I am working with: Month/Address/Name/Description/Amount January/123 Street/Fred/Painting/100 January/456 Avenue/Scott/Flooring/400 January/789 Road/Scott/Plumbing/100 February/123 Street/Fred/Flooring/600 February/246 Lane/Fred/Electrical/300 March/789 Road/Scott/Drywall/150 What I want to be able to do is selectively copy info from this databse to invoices (also excel). The invoice has three columns: Address/Description/Amount. I want to be able to automatically fill the invoices in as the database is filled in (either automatically, or if I have to actually manually run the macro to do it, that might be fine). Each name (Scott, Fred, etc.) will have their own set of 12 invoices for the year. So, e.g., I want to be able to produce a January invoice for all work done for Scott in January, showing the address, the description and the amount, line by line. So every time work on Scott's address(es) is done, the database is filled in, and i want it to "send" that information to the invoice on the next available line, filling in only the Address/Description/Amount columns from the database. Fred's invoice should fill in as any work is done on Fred's addresses. And once the month changes, the next invoice should start filling in. So first I need to filter the data by the month and the name (and there is actually one more column to filter by, but let's keep this example simpler). Then I need to list the remaining data on the invoice, but only certain cells from the rows that are now left. Help anyone?

Xpath that evaluates -all- attributes?

I maybe be trying to do something invalid here, but maybe someone smarter than me knows the correct syntax to solve my problem. Given: <group code="vehicle"> <line code="car"> <cell> <box code="price">1000.00</box> </cell> </line> <line code="car"> <cell code="sports"> <box code="price">500.00</box> </cell> </line> </group> If I use //*[@code="vehicle"]//*[@code="car"]//*[@code="price"], I will get both boxes returned (1000.00 and 500.00)--as expected but not what I want. Is there an xpath syntax that will evaluate against all nodes that have an attribute of @code rather than skipping it if it doesn't match with the end result being that I only get back the first box (price of 1000.00)? Like asking, choose the first node with @code and that @code must equal "vehicle", then choose the next node with @code and that @code must equal "car", then choose the next node with @code and @code must equal "price".

Note: i edited my Q (in the title) so that it better reflects what i actually want to know. In the original title and in the text of my Q, i referred to the source of the thrown exception; what i meant, and what i should have referred to, as pointed out in one of the high-strung but otherwise helpful response below, is the module that the exception class is defined in. This is evidenced by the fact that, again, as pointed out in one of the answers below the answer to the original Q is that the exceptions were thrown from calls to cursor.execute and cursor.next, respectively--which of course, isn't the information you need to write the try/except block. Get most left|right|top|bottom point contained in box

I'm storing Points Of Interest (POI) in PostgreSQL database, and retrieve them via PHP script to Android application. To reduce internet usage I want my mobile app to know if there are any points in the neighborhood of currently displayed area. My idea is to store bounds of the rectangle containing all points already retrieved (in other words: nearest point on the left (West) of most west already retrieved, nearest point above (North) of most north already retrieved etc.) and I will make next query when any edge of screen goes outside of this bounds. Currently I can retrieve points which are in "single screen" (in the area covered by currently displayed map) using: SELECT * FROM ch WHERE loc <@ (box '((".-$latSpan.", ".$lonSpan."),(".$latSpan.", ".-$lonSpan."))' + point '".$loc."') Now I need to know four most remote points in each direction, than I will be able to retrieve next four "more remote" points. Is there any possibility to get those points (or box) directly from PostgreSQL (maybe using some "aggregate points to box" function)?

SQL 2000 (MSDE) Hangs When It Receives an Erroneous Query from a Classic ASP Web Application

I have a SQL interface page in my classic ASP web app that allows admin users to run queries against the app's database (MSDE 2000) - it simply consists of a textarea that the user submits and the app returns the resulting list of records as below Dim oRS Set oRS = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Recordset") oRS.ActiveConnection = sConnectionString // run the query - this is for the admin only so doesnt check for sql safe commands etc. oRS.Open Request.Form("txtSQL") If Not oRS.EOF Then // list the field names from the recordset For i = 0 to oRS.Fields.Count - 1 Response.Write oRS.Fields(i).name & " " Next // show the data for each record in the recordset While Not oRS.EOF For i = 0 to oRS.Fields.Count - 1 Response.Write oRS.Fields(i).value & " " Next Response.Write "<br />" oRS.Movenext() Wend End If The problem with this is that if you send it an invalid query (with a spelling mistake, invalid join etc.) instead of throwing back an error immediately, it hangs IIS (you can see this by trying to browse the app from another computer, it fails) for a number of minutes and THEN returns the error. I have NO idea why! Can anyone help?
