• Why are my USB 2.0 devices hanging Windows XP?

  Background on the machine I'm having a problem with: The machine was inherited and appears to be circa 2003 (there's a date stamp on the power supply which leads me to this conclusion). I've got it set up as a Skype terminal for my 2 year old to keep in touch with her grandparents and other members of the family - which everyone loves. It has a generic ATX motherboard with no identifying markings other than one stamp that says "Rev.B". CPU-Z identifies the motherboard model as VT8601 but doesn't provide me with any manufacturer name. On board it has 1 x 10/100 LAN, 2 x USB 1.0, VGA, PS/2 for KB and mouse, parallel port, 2 x serial ports, 2 x IDE, 1 x floppy, 2 x SDRAM slots, 1 x CPU housing that is seating a 1.3GHz Intel Celeron CPU, 3 x PCI, 1 x AGP - although you can only use 2 of the PCI slots if you use the AGP slot due to the physical layout of the board. It's got 768Mb PC133 SDRAM - 1 x 512Mb & 1 x 256Mb installed as well as a D-LINK WDA-2320 54G Wi-Fi network card and a generic USB 2.0 expansion board containing 3 x external + 1 x internal USB connectors - it has a NEC uPD720102 chipset. It has a DVD+/-RW running as master on IDE1 and a 1.44Mb 3.5" floppy drive connected to the floppy connector. It has an 80Gb Western Digital hard drive running as master on IDE0. All this is sitting in a slimline case. I don't know the wattage of the PSU, but can post this later if this proves to be helpful. The motherboard is running a version of Award BIOS for which I don't have the version number to hand but can again post this later if it would be helpful. The hard disk is freshly formatted and built with Windows XP Professional/Service Pack 3 and is up to date with all current patches. In addition to Windows XP, the only other software it's running is Skype 4.1 (4.2 hangs the whole machine as soon as it starts up, requiring a hard boot to recover). It's got a Daytek MV150 15" touch screen hooked up to the on board VGA and COM1 sockets with the most current drivers from the Daytek website and the most current version of ELO-Touchsystems drivers for the touch component. The webcam is a Logitech Webcam C200 with the latest drivers from the Logitech website. The problem: If I hook any devices to the USB 2.0 sockets, it hangs the whole machine and I have to hard boot it to get it back up. If I have any devices attached to the USB 2.0 sockets when I boot up, it hangs before Windows gets to the login prompt and I have to hard boot it to recover. Workarounds found: I can plug the same devices into the on board USB 1.0 sockets and everything works fine, albeit at reduced performance. I've tried 3 different kinds of USB thumb drives, 3 different makes/models of webcams and my iPhone all with the same effect. They're recognized and don't hang the machine when I hook them to the USB 1.0 but if I hook them to the USB 2.0 ports, the machine hangs within a couple of seconds of recognizing the devices were connected. Attempted solutions: I've seen suggestions that this could be a power problem - that the PSU just doesn't have the wattage to drive these ports. While I'm doubtful this is the problem [after all the motherboard has the same standard connector regardless of the PSU wattage], I tried disabling all the on board devices that I'm not using - on board LAN, the second COM port, the AGP connector etc. through the BIOS in what I'm sure is a futile attempt to reduce the power consumption... I also modified the ACPI and power management settings. It didn't have any noticeable affect, although it didn't do any harm either. Could the wattage of the PSU really cause this problem? If it can, is there anything I need to be aware of when replacing it or do I just need to make sure it's got a higher wattage than the current one? My interpretation was that the wattage only affected the number of drives you could hook up to the power connectors, is that right? I've installed the USB card in another machine and it works without issue, so it's not a problem with the USB card itself, and Windows says the card is installed and working correctly... right up until I connect a device to it. The only thing I haven't done which I only just thought of while writing this essay is trying the USB 2.0 card in a different PCI slot, or re-ordering the wi-fi and USB cards in the slots... although I'm not sure if this will make any difference - does anyone have any experience that would suggest this might work? Other thoughts/questions: Perhaps this is an incompatibility between the USB 2.0 card and the BIOS, would re-flashing the BIOS with a newer version help? Do I need to be able to identify the manufacturer of the motherboard in order to be able to find a BIOS edition specific for this motherboard or will any version of Award BIOS function in its place? Question: Does anyone have any ideas that could help me get my USB 2.0 devices hooked up to this machine? • RDS Replication across regions

  We are using Amazon AWS for our web services but given the recent instabilities in their infrastructure, we are trying to figure out how to run our application across multiple regions for additional redundancy. Ideally, we would run our entire app in a active-active configuration in multiple regions but our main concern is that we are using RDS, which I understand cannot replicate across regions. One possible solution (though we have not tried or proven it would work) would be to do mysqldump or EBS snapshots every hour or so but this would mean that we would be forced to run in an active-passive configuration. Our data would be at most an hour behind. This carries its own issues around data synchronization when we failover and the master comes back up, so its not the best solution. Are there any proven solutions for replicating RDS across regions?

  I've got a basic photo album application, on the first view a list of albums is displayed with a subtitle showing how many images are in each album. I've got everything working to add albums, and add images to albums. The problem is that the image count lines are accurate whenever the app loads, but I can't get them to update during execution. • Use procmail to deliver to stdout and a second server

  I would like a Postfix server to deliver each message to a certain transport as well as relay to a second server. In master.cf, I have the following transport: zarafa unix - n n - 10 pipe flags= user=vmail argv=/usr/bin/zarafa-dagent ${user} Because I can't get Postfix to deliver to two transports, what I probably need, is a wrapper transport, using procmail maybe, that delivers to zarafa-dagent and relays to a second server (not just forward to an address; relay to a second server). It can also be a script that calls sendmail or whatever, but at the moment, I don't know how to proceed.

• Uninstalled Ubuntu, no GRLDR?

  So I'm a big fat idiot. I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my school's laptop, and here's come the time that I have to turn it back in. I wrote GRUB to the Master Boot Record, thinking it wasn't going to be permanent. So, fast forward to yesterday. I decided to hell with this, and popped in my Windows 7 CD, deleted the whole partition, formatted to NTFS, and installed Windows 7 on it. I'm surfing the web and my computer overheats [totally typical] I boot up, and get this: Try (hd0,0): FAT32: No GRLDR Try (hd0,1): invalid or null Try (hd0,2): invalid or null Try (hd0,3): invalid or null Try (hd1,0): NTFS5: No grldr Try (hd1,1): invalid or null Try (hd1,2): invalid or null Try (hd1,3): invalid or null Cannot find GRLDR. Press space bar to hold the screen, any other key to boot previous MBR... Timeout: 5 The timeout part just counts down to 0 from 5. I need to turn in this thing before tomorrow, please please please can someone help me out?

  It's a new build, but it's always had noisy fans. From start to end, they will not stop running. The case is a cooler master which I believe comes with a fan that is not controlled by BIOS (according to technician), so that may be the source of the problem..but my lack of knowledge on the matter prevents me from making a reasonable assessment. • Optimal way to make MySQL backups for fairly large databases (MyISAM / InnoDB)

  Currently we have one beefy MySQL database that runs a couple of high traffic Django based websites as well as some e-commerce websites of decent size. As a result we have a fair amount of large databases using both InnoDB and MyISAM tables. Unfortunately we've recently hit a wall due to the amount of traffic so I've setup another master server to help alleviate reads / backups. Now at the moment I simply use mysqldump with a few arguments and it's proven to be fine.. until now. Obviously mysqldump is a slow quick method however I believe we've outgrown its use. I now need a good alternative and have been looking into utilizing Maatkits mk-parallel-dump utility or an LVM snapshot solution. Succinct short version: I have a fairly large MySQL databases I need to backup Current method using mysqldump is inefficient and slow (causing issues) Looking into something such as mk-parallel-dump or LVM snapshots Any recommendations or ideas would be appreciated - since I have to re-do how we're doing things I rather have it done properly / most efficient :).

• XP can't read data from transferred HD

  Computer A, running XP, died. XP was installed on a fresh HD in computer B. Slaved data-backup HD from A was installed as slave on B. B will not read it; shows only 2 folders, Recycler and System Volume Info. All of these are older machines with IDE drives. What's going on & how can I read/transfer the data from the transferred drive? This was only a trial run. Actually I will need to transfer the master HD from A - which has XP on it - and read from its data partition because (blush) the backup drive was not up to date.

• DNS Zone file and virtual host question

  Hi all, I'm trying to set up a virtual host for redmine.SITENAME.com. I've edited the httpd.conf file and now I'm trying to edit my DNS settings. However, I'm not sure exactly what to do. Here's an snippet of what's already in the named.conf file (the file was made by someone else who is unreachable): zone "SITENAME.com" { type master; file "SITENAME.com"; allow-transfer { ip.address.here.00; common-allow-transfer; }; }; I figure if I want to get redmine.SITENAME.com working, I need to copy that entry and just replace SITENAME.com with redmine.SITENAME.com but will that work? I was under the impression I needed a .db file but I don't see any reference to one in the current named.conf file. Any advice would be great and if you need more info to answer the question, don't hesitate to ask.

  I found a guide for setting up a bridge in Fedora and was trying this: $ nmcli connection delete p33p1 $ nmcli connection add con-name br0 type bridge ifname br0 autoconnect yes $ nmcli connection add con-name p33p1 type bridge-slave ifname p33p1 master br0 autoconnect yes I found that $ nmcli con delete uuid [uuid here] accomplished the first step. nmcli connection does not have an 'add' action in this distribution. Please help me do the 2nd and 3rd steps. Context: I am trying to set up a virtual machine. I believe this is a necessary step for the VM to access my network and the internet. Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong! BTW, I am a linux newbie, tech oldie. Thank you.

  I have 128 KB/s (1 Mbit/s) internet connection. Not quite fast for downloading big files, but it is okay for internet browsing. When I start big file dowload, I cannot surf the web normally: pages appears slowly, especially pictures there. Therefore I pause downloading, but I'm regularly spending much time on reading articles or leaving the computer alone, when I can allow the file being dowloaded. Is there any software that can automize the process of pausing and resuming download or simply automatically regulate internet speed for each application using Internet? I download files using different software and protocols (Download Master for http, ftp; uTorrent for torrents; many other programs for updating themselves), so I don't want to be tied to particular program for downloading.

At some point, in repo1 the name of b1 was changed. As far as I can tell, the following is the right procedure to change the name of b1: $ git branch b1 b2 # changes the name of b1 to b2 $ git push remote :b1 # delete b1 remotely $ git push --set-upstream origin b2 # create b2 remotely and direct the local branch to track the remote 1 Now, afterwards, in repo2 I face a problem. git pull doesn't pull the changes from the branch (which is now called remotely b2). The error returned is: Your configuration specifies to merge with the ref 'b1' from the remote, but no such ref was fetched. What is the right way to do this? Both the renaming part and the updating in other clones?

• Is this a valid backup strategy for MongoDB?

  I've got a single dedicated server with a MongoDB database of around 10GB. I need to do daily backups, but I can't have downtime with the database. Is it possible to use a replica set on a single disk (with 2 instances of mongod running on different ports), and simply take the secondary one offline and backup the data files to an offsite storage such as S3 (journaling is turned on)? Or would using master/slave be better than a replica set? Is this viable, and if so, what potential problems could I have? If not, how do I conceptualize this to work?

• boot failure trying to install linux distro from a cd

  Hoping someone can help me get this installation from a cd going. I'm using an older pc: hp pavillion 2.66Ghz, 512RAM with a BIOS revision of 6/30/2003. I reclaimed some an older drive (Seagate ST340810A) that seems to be working as its recognized in the bios (auto-detected) I downloaded a mini.iso of ubuntu 10.10 that I want to install and burned the image to a CD for install. My boot sequence is: First Boot Device [CDROM] and I disabled devices 2-4 so I can just force it to read first from the CDROM. This old pc also has a separate CD writer which is a Sec.Slave, so the Sec.Master is the Toshiba DVD/ROM DSM-171 drive where I placed the burned cd with the linux distro. So, with these settings I cannot get it to boot. I get the "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER". Where do I go from here? Thanks.

  I'm setting up a domain on my home network for learning purposes, using BIND on CentOS to act as the name server. I've got the name server up and running as type master for my internal domain (plumbnicoll.family), and can do forward and reverse lookups from other computers in my LAN. For example, host office2.plumbnicoll.family correctly returns office2.plumbnicoll.family has address 192.168.1.3. What I'd like is to be able to resolve just office2 to its address, without needing to put .plumbnicoll.family at the end. Is this possible, or even desirable to do? I'm running a mixed environment at home with both Linux and Windows computers.

• How to stop nginx on Mac OS X

  I've installed nginx server on my Mac from MacPorts: sudo port install nginx. Then I followed the recommendation from the port installation console and created the launchd startup item for nginx, then started the server. It works fine (after I renamed nginx.conf.example to nginx.conf and renamed mime.types.example to mime.types), but I couldn't stop it... I tried sudo nginx -s stop - this doesn't stop the server, I can still see "Welcome to nginx!" page in my browser on http://localhost/, also I still see master and worker processes of nginx with ps -e | grep nginx. What is the best way to start/stop nginx on Mac? BTW, I've added "daemon off;" into nginx.conf - as recommended by various resources. Thank you.

• Keepalived with apache unable to bind interface on Backup server

  I have two debian 6 servers running keepalived 1.1.20 with one server acting as a Master and the other as a Backup. Both servers host apache 2.4 that have a global Listener on all interfaces on port 80 (Listen *:80) how ever I have some sites that require a listener for port 443 (SSL) and that is configured for each VirtualHost in the Apache config since I do not want every VirtualHost to listen on port 443. The problem is when I try to start Apache on the Backup machine that does not hold the virtual interface the VirtualHost is supposed to be listening on, I get AH00072: make_sock: could not bind to address 1.1.1.1:443. I know this is expected behavior of Apache. The real question is are there any known workarounds or solutions to this scenario?

• What does Libre Office do to an existing Excel sheet to bloat its size?

  I try to avoid using Libre Office on existing Excel created workbooks because of the potential for unpleasant results. In this case Libre Office bloated the size of the workbook for some reason unknown to me. I would like to know if Libre Office does this to all Excel workbooks or just something in that workbook that causes it. Software involved: Microsoft Office Excel 2010 Libre Office 3.5.x (exact version unknown) Dropbox (merely to sync changes) Platforms involved: Office on Windows (master of the obvious on that one I suppose..) • Problem accessing MICROSOFT##SSEE database (Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 16.)

  After an unexpected server shutdown due to a power failure, I can no longer connect to the internal windows database MICROSOFT##SSEE which is hosting Central Admin for my SBS 2008 server. The log shows: Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 16. Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE'. [CLIENT: <named pipe>] I've tried to connect using the SQL Management studio (connecting to .pipemssql$microsoft##sseesqlquery) but no luck. The SQL Server Configuration Manager doesn't show a entry for 'Protocols for MICROSOFT##SSEE' (but shows it for 2 other database hosted on the same SQL server 2005 Express edition. I have tried to restore the master.ldf and mastlog.log files from a backup, but the issue persists.

• VMWare - Windows XP guest licensing

  Hi, If I have a VMWare ESXi server with 4 Windows XP guests running on it, I understand that I need a separate license for each guest. Is there a way to simplify license compliance on these VMs? For example, I want to create a master VM image and boot it 4 times. By default those 4 VMs will have the same Windows activation key installed. Is there a simple solution for this? Or is it ok to do what I've described above provided I have 4 unique license keys on hand in case of audit? thanks!

• PHP-FPM runs PHP scripts as root

  I have a web server setup using nginx and PHP-FPM listening on a Unix socket. In my php-fpm.conf, I have specified user = www group = www When I run ps aux, I can see that the php-fpm worker processes run as www; the php-fpm master process runs as root. However, I noticed that PHP scripts are executed as root; at least that's the output of echo get_current_user(); What can I do to run scripts as the www user? How can this even happen if the worker processes run as www?
