  • Not using Web Server for html pages

    For an intranet application instead of using a proper web server, it has been planned to just deploy static html pages by sharing it over the network. This static html page is continously updated in the background by a program running on that PC and people access this html page by typing the shared file path directly in the browser. A maximum of 10 simultaneous users are expected to access it. Can any one see the disadvantages or advantages in this type of deployment?

  • Inlining an array of non-default constructible objects in a C++ class

    C++ doesn't allow a class containing an array of items that are not default constructible: class Gordian { public: int member; Gordian(int must_have_variable) : member(must_have_variable) {} }; class Knot { Gordian* pointer_array[8]; // Sure, this works. Gordian inlined_array[8]; // Won't compile. Can't be initialized. }; As even beginner C++ users know, the language guarantees that all members are initialized when constructing a class. And it doesn't trust the user to initialize everything in the constructor - one has to provide valid arguments to the constructors of all members before the body of the constructor even starts. Generally, that's a great idea as far as I'm concerned, but I've come across a situation where it would be a lot easier if I could actually have an array of non-default constructible objects. The obvious solution: Have an array of pointers to the objects. This is not optimal in my case, as I am using shared memory. It would force me to do extra allocation from an already contended resource (that is, the shared memory). The entire reason I want to have the array inlined in the object is to reduce the number of allocations. This is a situation where I would be willing to use a hack, even an ugly one, provided it works. One possible hack I am thinking about would be: class Knot { public: struct dummy { char padding[sizeof(Gordian)]; }; dummy inlined_array[8]; Gordian* get(int index) { return reinterpret_cast<Gordian*>(&inlined_array[index]); } Knot() { for (int x = 0; x != 8; x++) { new (get(x)) Gordian(x*x); } } }; Sure, it compiles, but I'm not exactly an experienced C++ programmer. That is, I couldn't possibly trust my hacks less. So, the questions: 1) Does the hack I came up with seem workable? What are the issues? (I'm mainly concerned with C++0x on newer versions of GCC). 2) Is there a better way to inline an array of non-default constructible objects in a class?

  • locking on dictionary of structs not working between 2 threads?

    C#, .Net2.0, XP, Zen I have 2 threads accessing a shared dictionary of structures, each thread via an event. At the beginning of the event I lock the dictionary, remove some structures, and exit the lock+event. Yet somehow the 2nd thread|event is finding some of the removed structures. Conceptually I must be doing something wrong for this to be happening? I thought locking was supposed to make it thread safe?

    Hi, I have thought about the following SQL statements: INSERT INTO A(a1, a2) SELECT b1, udf_SomeFunc(b1) FROM B Where udf_SomeFunc makes a select on table A. As I understand, first, a shared lock is set on A (I am talking just about table A now), then, after this lock is released, an exclusive lock is obtained to insert the data. The question is: is it possible, that another transaction will get the exclusive lock on table A, just before the current transaction takes its exclusive lok on A?

    Could anyone please point me to a good tutorial on how to connect a Windows Mobile 6 device to a wireless connection shared on Windows XP ? That is the PC shares the wireless connection (add hoc network ?) and the device connects via Internet Explorer to a server that runs on the PC. I searched a lot and did not find a tutorial that addresses my problem. All were either outdated, either incomplete or incorrect. NEVER MIND.

    We have a Scala project with few source files (in Scala and Java) and quite some dependencies in various binary formats (jar and DLL). I'm wondering what should go into our shared git repo. Only the source files (developers have to download or somehow resolve the dependencies themselves) or the both the source files and the dependencies? I may add that dependencies are all third parties and available for download for free.

    This is just a hypothetical scenario to illustrate my question. Suppose that there are two threads and one TVar shared between them. In one thread there is an atomically block that reads the TVar and takes 10s to complete. In another thread is an atomically block that modifies the TVar every second. Will the first atomically block ever complete? Surely it will just keep going back to the beginning, because the log is in an inconsistent state?

Using java.io is simple, but I don't know how to access android resources or assets using it.     Reading this When a bean is a singleton, only one shared instance of the bean will be managed and all requests for beans with an id or ids matching that bean definition will result in that one specific bean instance being returned. Will be managed... What does that mean? If there's only one object, than any modification to this object will result in that every another attempt to get this bean will return a modified instance??

It all works, however when any of the links are clicked, they point to dev.lazygekko.com/dev/..., dev being the folder it is pointing at. Can anyone shed some light on what I may be doing wrong?     I'm looking for a way to rewrite URLs only if the path doesn't exist. This isn't to handle 404s, but to redirect page URLs to a shared PHP file (ie: '/contact-us/' - '/show_page.php?page=contact-us'). The basic redirect is easy enough to achieve, however I want to be able to override the default page by adding '/contact-us/index.php' in the site root. Is this achievable with mod_rewrite or would I have to do something else?

I just need to compress and decompress a block of data without much options.
