• How do I install something from source and make it available to root?

  I have a CentOS VM and I need to install the latest version of Ruby on it. Unfortunately, yum only makes Ruby 1.8.6 available so I'm trying to install Ruby from source. Here's what I'm using: cd /usr/src sudo -s wget http://ftp.ruby-lang.org/pub/ruby/1.9/ruby-1.9.3-p125.tar.gz tar -xvzf ruby-1.9.3-p125.tar.gz cd ruby-1.9.3-p125 ./configure make && make install The problem is that once that's done, I can only use Ruby as a regular user but I need to use it as root to install some gems. For example, as a regular user I can do ruby -v and it works but sudo ruby -v outputs bash: ruby: command not found. What am I missing to make stuff I install from source available to all users?

  I'm new to networking. I need to set up a email server and I also need to create an email address. ex. [email protected] I've installed squirrelmail and dovecot. http://www.mydomain.com/squirrelmail/src/login.php Shows a log in screen, but when I try to log in I get this error: Error connecting to IMAP server: 127.0.0.1. 111 : Connection refused I have no experience with squirrelmail and dovecote. • Squid and Webmin - the 'all' acl

  In older versions of versions of squid, you had to define an acl 'all'. acl all src 0.0.0.0/0.0.0.0 You use this for http_access allow all http_access deny all etc. In Squid 3.0 and above, the 'all' ACL is built-in, you cannot (& need not) define it. However, the webmin squid module doesn't seem to know this - when you try to add a rule using all, it doesn't show 'all' in it's list of ACLs. How does one get around this? I am using webmin 1.530 on Debian Lenny. Squid Version is 3.0.STABLE19-1~bpo50+1

• Linux: Alternative to rsync? (ie, scp with resume)

  I've been using rsync to automatically send files from one box to another, which is great compared to scp, since it supports resuming. However, when resuming a very large file (10gb) rsync has to read both files and compare them, which is very slow. I don't need fancy error handling, just "scp with resume", so here's my question: Is there an alternative to rsync/scp, that supports resuming without having to read both source and destination files? I've read the manuals without finding anything I can use, please let me know if I've missed something. This is the rsync line I've been using: rsync -av --partial --progress --inplace SRC DST

• Eclipse: Organising Files

  I want to import a project that I'm planning to build upon. The problem is that it is very messy; with source files, class files and libraries under one directory. How would I organise these files using Eclipse? I know you can change the source folder and output folder, but when I do change the source folder, the files that I want inside it do not physically move to that folder. Output folder is fine, though. Also, I would like a separate folder for libraries. I'm not sure how I would go about this, however. Here's how I would like it: src: This folder will contain source files. bin: This folder will contain binary (class) files. lib: This folder will contain external libraries.

• VPN is working, except for DNS lookups. Firewall (Cisco ASA 5505) issue?

  I've got the following set up: LAN -> DHCP / DNS / VPN server (OSX 10.6) -> Cisco ASA 5505 -> WAN Connecting to the LAN via VPN works fine. I get all the details properly and I can ping any host on the internal network using their IP. However, I can't do any host lookups whatsoever. I've looked through the logs on and found this nugget in the firewall log: 3 Sep 08 2010 10:46:40 305006 10.0.0.197 65371 portmap translation creation failed for udp src inside:myhostname.local/53 dst inside:10.0.0.197/65371 Port 53 is dns services, no? Because of that log entry, I'm thinking that the issue is with the firewall, not the server. Any ideas? Please keep in mind that I have very little knowledge and experience with this kind of firewall and the little experience I do have is with the ASDM GUI console, not the CLI console.

• Is Rsync like subversion, but for a server?

  I'm trying to learn how to use rsync. I want to create daily backs up of my production server. Right now I run the command rsync -azr /var/www/* [email protected]:/var/www Now let's say one day, I want to roll back the /var/www/ directory on my production server to last month's version. How do I tell rsync to retrieve version N? On reading that rsync only copies differences between src and dest, I assumed rsync works like subversion where you commit changes to a destination, and keep track of every version, and with the option to checkout any version at anytime. Is that the way rsync works? It's like subversion but for an entire server? That would be great because then it means I don't have to do full ssh copies for my nightly backups.

• ASA5500 series logging for management interface in transparent mode

  i have a cisco asa5520 in transparent mode. the interface is on the same subnet as some windows machines, which are generating a lot of broadcast traffic that is filling up the logs. is there any way to have it not log that its blocking those packets? its a bunch of these messages: "through-the-device packet to from management-only network is denied: udp src..." im also seeing some of those zeroconf requests that id like to drop logging for. i tried to just put a rule on the management interface, but apparently thats not allowed.

  I am trying to get my new MediaWiki server to allow connections to our MySql Server and right now I cannot get my iptables firewall set up right for this.   Configured Clear OS to be in Gateway mode on a machine with two NIC cards. eth0:192.168.2.0/24 with ip 192.168.2.27 which is connected to a modem and thus have internet connectivity. eth1:192.168.122.0/24 with ip 192.168.122.10 which is connected to other machines in LAN through switch. LAN machines with network 192.168.122.0 is not getting internet.How can they get internet Through Clear OS gateway.I have enabled packet forwarding in clear os using "ip_forward=1" What am i missing?.Can you please help me in this. Following are the static routing i have added: on LAN machine1 with ip address 192.168.122.11 ip route add 192.168.2.0/24 via 192.168.122.10 dev eth0 ip route show 192.168.2.0/24 via 192.168.122.10 dev eth0 192.168.122.0/24 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.122.11 But still 192.168.2.0/24 network is not reachable.Where can be the problem??

  In nginx 1.2 & 1.3 you can modify the source to change the name: src/http/ngx_http_header_filter_module.c (lines 48 and 49): static char ngx_http_server_string[] = "Server: Not Nginx" CRLF; static char ngx_http_server_full_string[] = "Server: Not Nginx/1.0" CRLF; Renaming those and recompiling the source changes the server response name in nginx 1.2. However doing this in 1.3 does not seem to change the name. It still says nginx/1.3.5 and with server_tokens off; it just says nginx. How can I change the server name in 1.3 without installing the 3rd party addon headers more? I want to compile from source.

On the same network as the MacBook, I use an Android device (connecting via WiFi) to make HTTP requests. Expected Results: 1. Wireshark running on the MacBook sees the HTTP request from the Android device. Actual Results: 1. I only see SSDP broadcasts from 192.168.1.1 Question: What do I need to do so that Wireshark, like Firesheep, can see and use the packets (particularly HTTP) from other network devices on the same network?

This file is part of an older OS X program that runs under Rosetta. I'm having issues where some older programs running under Rosetta require the @ attribute when opening files. But I'm not sure what that attribute is, so I have no way to know how to add/remove it. I did try a thorough Google search on this, but I wasn't able to find the answer. I would have thought this would be an easy one to find. Maybe the Google query isn't acting properly because of the single @ special character. Any info. is much appreciated. Thanks!

• Squid3 not working. Access denied

  I installed SQUID3 on a Linux machine with two ethernet interfaces (eth0 and eth1). I used the default settings in the squid.conf file and uncommented the two lines acl localnet src 192.168.0.0/16 and http_access allow localnet. eth0 is connected to a router, which provides Internet access. It is assigned an IP 192.168.1.2 by the router. I manually configured eth1 to have an IP address 192.168.5.1. It is connected to a switch. Systems having IP addresses 192.168.5.x are connected to this switch. I ran these two commands for NAT: iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth1 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 80 -j DNAT --to-destination 192.168.5.1:3128 iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth0 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT --to-ports 3128 But when I try to access internet from a system having IP 192.168.5.2 through the proxy I get an error that says "Access denied". What is wrong with my configuration?

  The src directory of my project is composed by three folders: two sub-projects and some common files. I linked the files of the common directory to the two sub-projects. I've just imported my project to svn but end up with three duplications of the content of the common directory. I'm wondering if svn can deal with this and how. • Apache trailing slash added to files problem

  Hello! I am having a problem with Apache. What it does is this: Take /index.php file containing an code with src set to relative path myimg.jpg, both in the root of my server. So, www.mysite.com would show the image as would www.mysite.com/index.php. However, if I access www.mysite.com/index.php/ (with a trailing slash) it does the odd thing of executing index.php code as it would be inside an index.php folder (e.g. /index.php/index.php), thus not showing the image anymore. This is a simple example that's easy to solve with absolte addressing etc, the problem I am getting from this a security one that's not so easily fixed. So, how can I get Apache to give a 403 or 404 when files are accessed "as folders"? Thank you.

I'm using flowroute as my carrier. Is there something wrong on their side?
