• How do I get Paypal or a merchant account for a marketplace style web site?

  I'm having trouble getting approved for a merchant account for my website. Basically I have expert users and users. Expert users provide a service through my website which they set their own rates. Users purchase the services, then pay me, I give 90% to the expert users. I have been told this is factoring.. Is the way around this, a system like freelancer.com does? Where users deposit money into their freelancer account, then pay for the services they won? What are the negatives to this system? What about sites like 99designs? They accept CC payments and then pay the winning designer. How are some sites doing this but I'm having so much trouble getting approved?

• Are there any useful tools to mirror a mailman mailing list as a forum?

  We have a mailman mailing list however as we all know this is not very user friendly in terms of searching the archives. I am looking at a way to enable the continued functionality of mailman while having a forum linked to it for a more friendly user-interface approach. Is there a forum application that lets you mirror the mailman service so that posts to mailman are sync'd into the forum and posts to the forum are sync'd to mailman?

I have used other web host before now I am trying a new one and I have to add some dns entries like in the picture here: http://cloudcontrol.com/developers/documentation/add-ons/aliases/ I dont know what I have done wrong. • Mixing self signed certs with traditional SSL

  I have a traditional SSL cert going to a subdomain secure.mydomain.com on my domain. My host required me to have a dedicated IP in order to do this. I would also like to use HTTPS on my site for when I log into WordPress, etc. and since this is just for me, I don't mind self signing it and clicking through the scary messages. Is there a way to use a self signed cert for mydomain.com/wp-admin (just for me) when I already am on a dedicated IP that already has a traditional SSL cert for normal users on secure.mydomain.com? (FWIW, I'm on WHM without root access.)

• Referrer Strings

  I'm not exactly sure how to ask this, but here I go. I work for a company that provides IT services. Our main costumer has a website developed by WebCompany.com, and I act as a maintainer/middle-man for this website for our customer. What's happening is that on the front page there is a drop-down-menu with links. One link goes to a third party website - ThirdParty.com. This third party website automatically logs you in based on your IP or your referrer string. Homepage ThirdParty.com Logged in via IP or referrer string. What's happening... is Website.com is passing along inconsistent referrer strings. I've asked them to look into it and they say it's not their fault, referrer strings are handled at the browser. ThirdParty.com is actually nice enough to have IP and referrer string listed on the front page for users not logged in. So... how can I trace the referrer string so that I can figure out why http://Website.com's front page link to ThirdParty.com is showing a referrer as "None" or "Thirdparty.com" instead of "ThirdParty.com"? Their website is build in PHP. Can you force all links on a website to list "referrer" as "http://website.com/"? instead of "http://website.com/portal/1" or "http://website.com/page3"?

• Low pagerank backlinks - does Google penalize?

  I have a new stock discussion forum and I would like to promote it. Specifically, I have two ideas in mind to help promote it: 1) Become a member at other stock discussion forums. Make high quality posts, build a good reputation, and leave a link to my own forum in a non intrusive way (ie. in signature or at the end of my posts). This approach makes sense because you can find other members in other forums that are interested in stock discussion and a backlink to your forum, as long as it is not done in an intrusive/spammy way, should come across as acceptable. 2) Promote my site by writing articles at Squidoo, Hubpages, etc. This approach also makes sense because that's what Squidoo and Hubpages is for. The problem with both these approaches is that when I leave a backlink to my site, the page that I am leaving a backlink from may have a low PR - most likely, a PR of 0. Now, I have read that after the Penguin update by Google, your site can be penalized if you have too many backlinks from low PR pages: http://www.entrepreneur.com/article/224339 So, I am caught in a dilemma: a) If I start promoting my site via other stock forums, Squidoo, Hubpages, etc, but the backlink to my site comes from a page with low PR, Google may penalize my site. b) However, if I don't promote my site, nobody will ever discover it (aside from other promotion techniques like social media promotion, directories, etc).

In Google Analytics, I would like to be able to compare a variety of metrics (side by side), however i'm not sure how to go about this in the best way. Am I looking at creating 3 advanced segments, 3 profiles or should I be doing it in one custom report? Or is this even possible in Google Analytics version 5?

• The entire content of my Wordpress page has disappeared

  I have a blog installed on my site using Wordpress. Last week I upgraded Wordpress from 2.6 to 3.0.4 (I had to do this manually). All went well, or so I thought, but I have just noticed that the content of an existing page has vanished. The page URL still works, but all content has disappeared - doctype, html tags, body tags, everything. Please note, this is specific to pages - posts are still displaying fine. I have since created a brand new page which does not display the content either. Things I have tried include Switching to a freshly installed theme Deactivating all plugins Setting the problem page to draft, and back again Deleting the .htaccess file I suspect it's a database problem and have contacted my hosting company who have said the only thing they can do is restore the DB from a backup, but that I should consider it a last resort. Does anyone have any further ideas what to try?

  I'm sure most webmasters have recived a mail like this: Creating [insert item here] is not working! When you check it out there is no general problem with the function but rather the user has discovered an edge case. Almost every mail I get is like this and in the long run it gets a bit annoying to always have to ask the user for more information. Is there anything I can do to get my users provide more useful feedback? Right now I have a mailto: for the webmaster mail in the page footer. I was thinking of changing this so that they have to report through a form on the site. Anyone got any experience with this? Do you get better/more reports by having a feedback form instead of giving the users the email?

  Google's PageSpeed plugin suggests that a website should include Last-Modified and ETag headers: Specify a cache validator "Resources that do not specify a cache validator cannot be refreshed efficiently. Specify a Last-Modified or ETag header to enable cache validation" However, Apache suggests that by not including them at all, we speed up websites by eliminating If-Modified-Since and If-None-Match requests: http://www.askapache.com/htaccess/apache-speed-last-modified.html these are in direct opposition - which should be implemented? I'm leaning towards Apache's suggestion, as when I want a file cached, I don't want it refreshed.

• Stopping duplicate H1 and title from dynamic content

  I have a web site where there are lots of dynamically (database driven) created pages. These pages are basically used to show uploaded images The pages look a bit like this URL: http://www.mywebsite.com/page-id/page-title/ H1: View from the sea This is a big issue because I might have 10 other pages with the title: 'View from the sea'. I know the simple solution would be to make sure the pages are named differently but I have lots of users on the web site so it's not that simple. What do you guys think to putting the page-id with the page-title in the H1 tag? So it might read 437 - View from the sea. I need to differentiate the h1 titles. I think using the page-id would help but if anyone has a better solution that would be great! Thanks in advance

• I used a 301 Permanent Redirect to a 3rd party site by mistake! Can I stop the redirection?

  Oh Noes! I've been parking a domain name for a friend/client of mine on my hosting provider (Dreamhost, FWIW) for a while, and they eventually asked me to redirect their domain to a 3rd party website which is currently featuring some relevant promotional content. Once this period ends, we will probably go ahead and set up a proper website for the domain on my hosting account. I used Dreamhost's "redirect" hosting option in their domain configuration panel, not realizing that it would implement a 301 Permanent redirect, or what the implications were. Now it seems that for any client that has visited the site anytime recently, the 301 redirect is still cached/in effect, although I have changed the domain settings back to regular Dreamhost full site hosting. It seems that the only thing that can be done is to wait out the TTL/cache expiration for the redirect. I have no idea how long that might be, so I'm wondering if there is any good way to cache-bust the redirect or otherwise undo its long-term effects. I put a simple html meta refresh in the domain folder to replace the 301 to keep the intended functionality in place, but I'm still not able to access the domain's other content normally, even via FTP, etc. Isn't there anything I can do? Otherwise, how long does it take for a cached redirect to expire? It's gonna be a bummer if it's really permanent.

• Ideas for making money off a website

  I'm considering acquiring a website that traffics close to 20k a month. It's currently unprofitable, but obviously I would need to change that to justify the cost. It's a support site for a framework similar to CakePHP. A resource that allows people to find plugins for that site. How would you go about expanding this site so that it would be broad enough to raise traffic and how would you make money off of it? Some ideas I've had: 1- BuySellAds.com seem to make ads classy and relevant 2- Team up with other sites in some way (What ways? ... Ecommerce sites that sell plugins (like CodeCanyon), etc) 3- Write tutorials and such to drive more traffic (time consuming, and already heavily saturated for this framework). Are there resources out there that help webmasters in ways like this?

  About a year ago my wordpress website was hacked & some company decided to go nuts and actually do some "SEO" on the various links it created. Some of the pages would show up on google as "payday cash advance" instead of "portfolio". The issue has been resolved, but now as I've been doing GOOD seo, I've noticed (when checking backlinks) that there are TONS of links still on the internet (mostly broken sites now) that have links to my website with titles like: "get a loan today" and so on. Is there a way to remove these links ? Can I tell google to ignore them ? Help !

  I have a client who already has a merchant account for their physical store. What specific information about the merchant account will my client need to get from his bank to link it up to an online payment gateway that we will be using for the store? -----edits below -"my merchant account" changed to "the merchant account" -It is noted that my client will need to get a "high-risk" merchant account separate from his existing physical stores merchant account. -Though the question is essentially answered, for clarification: We plan to minimize our PCI compliance needs by utilizing something like Braintree's Transparent Redirect or the CRESecure iForm. So the gateway we would need to give the merchant account info to would be either of those two. Though, the CRESecure method would have yet one more step added into the mix since they would forward data to another payment provider. It is now assumed that the best place to field this question is to the support team at Braintree or CRESecure.

• Page Spamming via locations

  Hi guys I am new here so please be gentle :) I have created a web page for a small mail order business. The page asks the reader if they are in need of a supplier for products in their "area" and if they have ever been let down by a supplier in that "area" etc. It also lists all the local villages and hamlets around the [area] where they can also supply too. This page is dynamically created and the [area] changes and so do the small towns that are local to the town. The page also contains information on the products so the word count vs town names is not stupid. An example of one of the URL would be www.website.com/1014/Halesowen/ It basically covers the whole of the UK so around 800 main towns with 28,000 local villages. The URL changes, so does the title and h1 tags, also each page is Geo coded for that town. My question really is this a good or bad idea? Is it a black hat technique ? I have been told if I have to ask the question then it probably is but the site does supply to all these areas just as any mail order company does and would like to get listed higher in each town for the products. I have seen this done on a few sites but only with a few targeted towns and not the whole of the UK so I would be really interested in your guys thoughts on this. I would post the URL to the site but as I am new here I am a bit unsure of the rules regarding posting links. The whole site needs a lot of other onsite SEO work doing and I will be doing that over the next few weeks. I look forward to your views on this. p.s.   Hi All, I run a (CentOS-powered) website currently, and we are currently planning on moving to a dedicated server. One of the essentials for us is preventing data loss with the least amount of bother. Therefore, I feel that the following features are important for us RAID 1 Managed backups by the hosting company, with at least a 7 day retention In my search for providers, I found some which provide RAID 1, but none apart from GoDaddy which provide Managed backups. 1&1 provides "FTP backup bandwidth", but I have to provide the backup location myself. Am I missing something? Are there other reputable hosting providers which can provide managed backups as part of their dedicated hosting plans? Some pointers will be much appreciated. Thanks, -A

  I'm going to be creating a site for a business with the following: Single Item purchases with Paypal, Google Checkout and Amazon Checkout Digital Downloads for members from a CDN Forum Voting on different items While that seems rather simple having to deal with the three different payment gateways is a big pain in the ass. Django has a great payment library which works for all three but I'm not able to find one for any of the PHP frameworks. Anyone have any suggestions?   I have a company website hosted at www.BRAND.com (where BRAND is a generic name). The company want to develop a "micro website" for one of their campaigns, named "Inspired By BRAND". I have two directions: inspired.by.BRAND.com - which I personally don't like too much. I don't know why but I don't recall any web address similar to this one subdomain.subdomain.domain.com. inspired.BRAND.com - which I this is best suited for it.   Let's say that I run a forum dedicated to computer hardware. Naturally, people are going to ask questions like: What is the best laptop for running [os] Or What is the best video card for under [amount] These may be perfectly fine discussions, but the content loses usefulness over time. An answer to either question asked in 2007 might still be relevant in 2008, but definitely not in 2012. Is there a way that I can tell search engines that certain pages might not give visitors what they're looking for after a certain date, and perhaps hint to a page on my site that would provide good information? Perhaps something I could set in HTTP response headers, meta tags or even a site map?

  In Webmaster Tools, under the inbound links section, do ads get counted as inbound links? I am doing a review of inbound links on a website and found that most of them are sourced from meaningless blogs and spam websites. Before I accuse anyone of not doing their job properly, I would like to know something: Is it possible that those inbound links were generated when an ad for the website appeared on the spam website? An SEO firm was paid handsomly to generate inbound links and I am afraid all they did was submit material to spam blogs and websites.

When migrating the domain in Google Webmaster Tools...will all the authority from the old domain pass if I use 301 redirects? Does anyone know how all the reviews I have collected will get transferred to the new domain when using the AdWords seller ratings?   My client wants a "lite" forum... not unlike these stack exchange sites, but even a little lighter. There's a screenshot of the discussion group she likes most, below. You can also go here to see it for yourself it you like. I don't think traditional forum apps will display, functionally, in this manner. Is there any software I can use to get a similar result? A web service would be acceptable as well.
