    I would like to implement some kind of manager class in my application. It will be in charge of loading textures, processing them, distributing them etc... At first, I wanted to make a global variable that simply contains an instance of my manager class. I found this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4646577/global-variables-in-java. However, the users there seem to recommend to never use global variables. Fine then, I once heard about Singletons, so I though I could use that instead. I mean, creating just one instance of my manager class sounds good. However, I found this other question: When is Singleton appropriate?, which basically tells me that Singletons are, in most scenarios, some kind of anti-pattern. Now I am a bit lost - what other approach can I take to create my manager class, whose only requirement is to be accessible from anywhere?

  • How can I defend Ruby on Rails against customers' not technical opinion?

    My customer, a translations business owner, just told me that he has been reading about Ruby on Rails and told me that "there are more PHP guys around there" and "it seems the community prefers it". What would you, as software engineer and freelancer, say to the customer to achieve these goals: Sell Make him see that the technology is my expert decision and Rails is as good or better than PHP (+ whatever framework) for this particular project.     Does anyone know of companies offering SaaS full text search? I'm looking for something that uses Lucene, solr, or sphinx on the backend, and provides a REST API for submitting documents to index, and running searches.     Hi, I have a flex repeater for an accordion inside a TitleWindow that is quite slow, I've already set recycleChildren to true, which has helped, but it's still slow on the first load and causes the animation to stutter when I open the TitleWindow. The repeater is just one part of what's visible in the TitleWindow, what I would like to do is have the repeater load after the rest of the content in the TitleWindow so the animation of the TitleWindow being opened doesn't stutter (the main problem). Can anyone suggest what the best way to achieve that might be? Thanks, Chris

All of the APIs that i've found only let you set a fixed amount and it's difficult/impossible to vary the subscription amount month to month. Has anyone come across any services that do this?

I need it to run under medium trust (webserver) and to be free of charge (sice this is a very small project), therefore there is not much competition. Unfortunately, since I need it for a commercial project, I cannot the AGPL introduced with version 5.0. Do you know if I may use the 4.x versions using the LGPL? Or is their license automatically updated to the APGL?

    Hi, I'm in the process of building my first serious Flex application and have started out using Flex 3.4 even though 4.0 was available mainly due to the larger number of resources. But now I feel very comfortable with the Flex API's, is it worth upgrading to Flex 4? What are the benefits?
