• When using source control, what files should actually be commited?

  I am working on a small project, hosted on Google Code, using SVN for source control. This is my first time using source control, and I'm a bit confused about what I should actually be committing to the repository. My project is very simple: A Class Library project, written in C#. The actual code that I have written is a single file. My question is this: Should I be committing the entire project (including directories like Debug, Release, Properties, etc.) or just my main .cs file? Thanks, After fighting with Subversion for a while (note to self: do not reset repository), it looks like I finally have it working with the directories laid out properly.   I am a bit confused about socket programming in C. You create a socket, bind it to an interface and an IP address and get it to listen. I found a couple of web resources on that, and understood it fine. In particular, I found an article Network programming under Unix systems to be very informative. What confuses me is the timing of data arriving on the socket. How can you tell when packets arrive, and how big the packet is, do you have to do all the heavy lifting yourself? My basic assumption here is that packets can be of variable length, so once binary data starts appearing down the socket, how do you begin to construct packets from that?

• Extracting Data Daily from MySQL to a Local MySQL DB

  I'm doing some experiments locally that require some data from a production MySQL DB that I only have read access to. The schemas are nearly identical with the exception of the omission of one column. My goal is to write a script that I can run everyday that extracts the previous day's data and imports it into my local table. The part that I'm most confused about is how to download the data. I've seen names like mysqldump be tossed around but that seems a way to replicate the entire database. I would love to avoid using php seeing as I have no experience with it. I've been creating CSVs but I'm worried about having the data integrity (what if there is a comma in a field or a \n) as well as the size of the CSV (there are several hundred thousand rows per day).

• Why isn't the eigenclass equivalent to self.class, when it looks so similar?

  I've missed the memo somewhere, and I hope you'll explain this to me. Why is the eigenclass of an object different from self.class? class Foo def initialize(symbol) eigenclass = class << self self end eigenclass.class_eval do attr_accessor symbol end end end My train of logic that equates the eigenclass with class.self is rather simple: class << self is a way of declaring class methods, rather than instance methods. It's a shortcut to def Foo.bar. So within the reference to the class object, returning self should be identical to self.class. This is because class << self would set self to Foo.class for definition of class methods/attributes. Am I just confused? Or, is this a sneaky trick of Ruby meta-programming?

What is each part doing? Functionally, the animation makes visible a series of pictures, then the whole site. I want to skip the animation and just make the whole site visible(if cookies='visited'). I'd like to do this without rewriting the animation script. here's a link. What happens now is if you have the cookie the animation doesn't run and everything is hidden.

• x86 Assembly - printf doesn't print without "\n"

  So I'm confused. I'm going through the book "Programming from the Ground Up" and am working with using libraries. printf is working just fine so long as I include a "\n" in the string, but without it it will print absolutely nothing. Any idea why this happens? Code: .section .data my_str: .ascii "Jimmy Joe is %d years old!\n\0" my_num: .long 76 .section .text .globl _start _start: pushl my_num pushl $my_str call printf movl $1, %eax movl $0, %ebx int $0x80 Also, when I use -m elf_i386 for 32-bit mode and -dynamic-linker /lib/ld-linux.so.2 -lc to link, I get the warning ld: skipping incompatible /usr/lib64/libc.so when searching for -lc If that makes any difference, or if anybody has any suggestions as to how to have it load the 32-bit library directly. • Path with no slash after drive letter and colon - what does it point to?

  I have mistyped a path and instead of c:\foo.txt wrote c:foo.txt. I expected it to either fail or to resolve to c:\foo.txt, but instead it seems to be resolved to foo.txt in a current user's home folder. Powershell returns: PS C:\> [System.IO.Path]::GetFullPath("c:\foo.txt") c:\foo.txt PS C:\> [System.IO.Path]::GetFullPath("c:foo.txt") C:\Users\Administrator\foo.txt PS C:\> [System.IO.Path]::GetFullPath("g:foo.txt") G:\foo.txt Running explorer.exe from commandline and passing it any of the above results in C:\Users\Administrator\Documents to be opened. I haven't found any documentation of that and I'm utterly confused, please explain the behaviour.

  hi, I'm using Swing GroupLayout and I'm confused about the values GroupLayout.DEFAULT_SIZE and GroupLayout.PREFERRED_SIZE. I never know when to use each one of them in methods like GroupLayout.addComponent(Component, int, int, int). suppose I have this code: GroupLayout l = ...; l.setHorizontalGroup(l.createSequentialGroup() .addComponent(tf1) .addComponent(tf2)); l.setVerticalGroup(l.createParallelGroup() .addComponent(tf1) .addComponent(tf2)); there are two JTextFields on a single line laid out with GroupLayout (one sequential group horizontally and one parallel group vertically). if I resize the window now, both components get the available space (50% each). but I want only the first text field to grow/shrink horizontally and only the second text field to grow/shrink vertically. what values of min, pref and max should I use to accomplish that? I know I can just try it and see what combination works but I'd like to know the reasoning behind this problem.

  I'm relatively new to flash, and is confused about what I should use to store and retrieve key value pairs. After some googling I've found various map-like things to choose from: 1) Use a Object: var map:Object = new Object(); map["key"] = "value"; The problem is that it seems to lack some very basic features. For example to even get the size of map I'd have to write a util method. 2) Use a Dictionary What does this standard library class provide over the simple object? It seems silly for it to exist if it's functionally identical to Object. 3) Go download some custom HashMap/HashTable implementation from the web. I've used a lot of modern languages, and this is the first time I haven't been able to find a library implementation of an associative array within 5 minutes. So I'd like to get some best-practice advice from an experienced flash developer. Thanks!

  From reading other Stackoverflow entries and the boost::asio documentation, I've confirmed that there is no synchronous asio read/write calls that also provide an easy-to-use timeout as a parameter to the call. I'm in the middle of converting an old-school linux socket app with select(2) calls that employs timeouts, and I need to do more-or-less the same. So what is the best way to do this in boost::asio? Looking at the asio documentation, there are many confusing examples of various things to do with timers, but I'm quite confused. I'd love to see a simple-to-read example of this: Read from a socket, but wait for a maximum of X seconds after which the function either returns with nothing, or returns with whatever it was able to read from the socket before the timeout expired.

Everyone refers to "Asynchronous" computing as running different processes on seperate threads, which gives the illusion that these processes are running at the same time. This is not the definition of the word asynchronous. a·syn·chro·nous –adjective 1. not occurring at the same time. 2. (of a computer or other electrical machine) having each operation started only after the preceding operation is completed. What am I not understanding here?

• step attribute not working with HTML5 <input type="range"> on Safari

  Are there known issues with range inputs not working fully on Safari? I have the following input element: <input type=?"range" min=?"0" max=?"360" step=?"0.0001" value=?"0">? On Chrome, the input goes according to the step variable. On Safari, it only goes by integer values. Even setting the step to 10 still makes it go by increments of 1. I'm confused because I thought Chrome and Safari both used WebKit.

• C# : Problem in creating diffrent types of columns in a gridview

  My windows form application has a grid view control with filename as a default column. User should create a column of following types Text, Number, Currency, Combo Box, Check Box, Radio Button ,Date time type (should display DateTimePicker control) and Hyper Link type. After that i want to pass all rows to next screen for further processing. We can create a column of these types in a grid view but how can i store it in a data table so that i can pass it to next screen. Or should i create a column in a data table and then assign data table to grid view by gridview.DataSource = dt; but can we create a these types of columns in a data table. I am so confused!! I've done research on Backbone.js, but I'm still confused as to exactly how this code pull information from the app's database. • OpenGL gluLookAt issues

  I am trying to switch my space invaders game to a first person view, i.e. a view of the world from the ship. I am getting a bit confused about what point I should be looking at. I am currently using these parameters in gluLookAt: GL11.glMatrixMode(GL11.GL_MODELVIEW); GL11.glLoadIdentity(); GLU.gluLookAt(ship3dPos.x, ship3dPos.y, ship3dPos.z,400.0f, 600.0f,-50.0f, 0.0f, 1.0f,-0.0f); Where ship3dPos is a Vector3f. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to set parameters 4,5 and 6 to, to get a view of the whole world(window is 800/600). I want to have a view of say 100.0 wide from the ships perspective, with this view moving along the x-axis as the player moves the ship. Thanks

  I've been following along with the examples in the book in making a online catalog and am having a couple of discouraging difficulties in Chapter 8 task C: Catalog display. I have input the code for the stylesheets as instructed but it has created a slightly skewed result as compared to what is shown in the book. Whilst minor and aesthetic in nature its a little shock to my confidence and slightly irritating when trying to carry on through the book. • Detailstext in TableView from Coredata Iphone

  Hey, that is my first question here at stackoverflow. Let me try to be specific as I can. The project is as follows: I am trying to parse an xml file in an iphone app, which works already. I am saving the parsed data into the CoreData of the Iphone. So far so good: I have two elements of the xml file which I want to show in the tableview as the text and the detailtext. Now the strange behaviour occurs: If I take the data of the Core Data and trying to visualize them in the tableview, then both elements are displayed in seperate cells and not as detailtext of the element. If I am just taking a constant string for the detailtext, then it works, but if I am trying to take for every cell a specific element from the Core Data then it is shown seperately in the tableview. I googled a lot, reading here and there. I dont know which code I should show because I dont have a clue where exactly the mistake could be. Maybe someone can answer that immediately because it is a stupid mistake somewhere, which is common. Thanks for your help.

  Hi all! i have algorithm that will go through a large data set read some text files and search for specific terms in those lines. I have it implemented in Java, but I didnt want to post code so that it doesnt look i am searching for someone to implement it for me, but it is true i really need a lot of help!!! This was not planned for my project, but data set turned out to be huge, so teacher told me I have to do it like this. I was reading about MapReduce and thaught that i first do the standard implementation and then it will be more/less easier to do it with mapreduce. But didnt happen, since algorithm is quite stupid and nothing special, and map reduce...i cant wrap my mind around it. So here is shortly pseudo code of my algorithm LIST termList (there is method that creates this list from lucene index) FOLDER topFolder INPUT topFolder IF it is folder and not empty list files (there are 30 sub folders inside) FOR EACH sub folder GET file "CheckedFile.txt" analyze(CheckedFile) ENDFOR END IF Method ANALYZE(CheckedFile) read CheckedFile WHILE CheckedFile has next line GET line FOR(loops through termList) GET third word from line IF third word = term from list append whole line to string buffer ENDIF ENDFOR END WHILE OUTPUT string buffer to file Also, as you can see, each time when "analyze" is called, new file has to be created, i understood that map reduce is difficult to write to many outputs??? I understand mapreduce intuition, and my example seems perfectly suited for mapreduce, but when it comes to do this, obviously I do not know enough and i am STUCK! Please please help.

  I'm new to Obj-C and I have run in to a very, very basic mental block that's making me feel a little stupid. I want to pass a variable from one method to another in an purely objective-C way. So far I'm stuck and have resorted to writing it in C. In C it goes as follows; //detect the change in the segmented switch so we can; change text - (IBAction)switchChanged:(id)sender { NSLog(@"Switch change detected"); //grab the info from the sender UISegmentedControl *selector = sender; //grab the selected segment info from selector. Selector position is %d", selectorPosition); //Idea is to receive a value from the segmented controler and change the screen text accordingly return 0; } This works perfectly well, but I want to learn how to do this with objects and messages.   Hi, my problem is that my variables are not working in javascript. all variables need names without some character at the beginning, this is the stupid thing...Anyways, im trying to make a funtion that makes "select all checkboxes".
