• How to implement a grapher in C#

  So I'm writing a graphing calculator. So far I have a semi-functional grapher, however, I'm having a hard time getting a good balance between accurate graphs and smooth looking curves. The current implementation (semi-pseudo-code) looks something like this: for (float i = GraphXMin; i <= GraphXMax; i++) { PointF P = new PointF(i, EvaluateFunction(Function, i) ListOfPoints.Add(P) } Graphics.DrawCurve(ListOfPoints) The problem with this is since it only adds a point at every integer value, graphs end up distorted when their turning points don't fall on integers (e.g. sin(x)^2). I tried incrementing i by something smaller (like 0.1), which works, but the graph looks very rough. I am using C# and GDI+. I have SmoothingMethod set to AntiAlias, so that's not the problem, as you can see from the first graph. Is there some sort of issue with drawing curves with a lot of points? Should the points perhaps be positioned exactly on pixels? I'm sure some of you have worked on something very similar before, so any suggestions? While you're at it, do you have any suggestions for graphing functions with asymptotes? e.g. 1/x^2 P.S. I'm not looking for a library that does all this - I want to write it myself.

• How to identify multiple identical pairs in two vectors

  In my graph-package (as in graph theory, nodes connected by edges) I have a vector indicating for each edge the node of origin from, a vector indicating for each edge the node of destination to and a vector indicating the curve of each edge curve. By default I want edges to have a curve of 0 if there is only one edge between two nodes and curve of 0.2 if there are two edges between two nodes. The code that I use now is a for-loop, and it is kinda slow: curve <- rep(0,5) from<-c(1,2,3,3,2) to<-c(2,3,4,2,1) for (i in 1:length(from)) { if (any(from==to[i] & to==from[i])) { curve[i]=0.2 } } So basically I look for each edge (one index in from and one in to) if there is any other pair in from and to that use the same nodes (numbers).   I am inputting an adjacency list for a graph. There are three columns of data (vertex, destination, edge) separated by a single space. • Error with zoomStartTime and AnnotatedTimeLine

  I'm a bit of a beginner with Javascript, but last month I had a working Google chart linked to a Google Docs file, which uses a start date for the graph at 90 days before the current date. I checked the page today and in Chrome I get the message "Object # has no method 'getTime'", and in Firefox I get the message "b.zoomStartTime[y] is not a function". Both stop the graph from loading. I have simplified the code to help me with the error, but I'm not getting anywhere... • Why should I prefer OSGi Services over exported packages?

  Hi, I am trying to get my head around OSGi Services. The main question I keep asking myself is: What's the benefit of using services instead of working with bundles and their exported packages? As far as I know it seems the concept of Late Binding has something to do with it. Bundle dependencies are wired together at bundle start, so they are pretty fixed I guess. But with services it seems to be almost the same. A bundle starts and registers services or binds to services. Of course services can come and go whenever they want and you have to keep track of these chances. But the core idea doesn't seem that different to me. Another aspect to this seems to be that services are more flexible. There could be many implementations for one specific Interface. On the other hand there can be a lot of different implementations for a specific exported package too. In another text I read that the disadvantage of using exported packages is that they make the application more fragile than services. The author wrote that if you remove one bundle from the dependency graph other dependencies would no longer be met, thus possibly causing a domino effect on the whole graph. But couldn't the same happen if a service would go offline? To me it looks like service dependencies are no better than bundle dependencies. So far I could not find a blog post, book or presentation that could clearly describe why services are better than just exposing functionality by exporting and importing packages. To sum my questions up: What are the key benefits of using OSGi Services that make them superior to exporting and importing packages?

  Here's a pretty simple idea, in this pastebin I've posted some pair of numbers. These represent Nodes of a directed graph. The input to stdin will be of the form, (they'll be numbers, i'll be using an example here) c d q r a b b c d e p q so x y means x is connected to y (not viceversa) There are 2 paths in that example. a->b->c->d->e and p->q->r. You need to print all the unique paths from that graph The output should be of the format a->b->c->d->e p->q->r Notes You can assume the numbers are chosen such that one path doesn't intersect the other (one node belongs to one path) The pairs are in random order. They are more than 1 paths, they can be of different lengths. All numbers are less than 1000. If you need more details, please leave a comment. I'll amend as required. • How to disable 3rd party cookies in Chrome?

  I have both the "stop websites from storing local data" and the "block all third party cookies without exception" settings enabled in Chrome 12 (I'm not sure what the exact names of these settings are in english as I run Chrome with swedish localization). I do however have two problems. My first problem is that when I'm visiting one of my local news paper's site (and surely other), cookies from www.facebook.com is allowed for some reason. I suspect that the reason is that I have added an exception to the www.facebook.com domain but as the setting "block all third party cookies without exception" implies, that shouldn't matter. My second problem is that if I check what cookies are stored on my computer after browsing for a while, I have tons of cookies that are not on my white list. Primarily from ad services. My expectations from enabling the above mentioned settings was that only cookies that fulfill the two folling requirements would be accepted: the cookies must be from the domain in my address bar the cookies must be from a domain on my whitelist Apparently this isn't the case. The question is, have I completely misunderstood the settings or is this a bug? And, either way, is there a way to accomplish my desired behavior?

• Why won't Google Chrome install on my Windows 7?

  I can tell something is wrong with my computer. A little history: Google Chrome was not running correctly. When i was using facebook, any link on face that ran an ajax javascript function would not work. No error was being thrown, it just wasn't working. I uninstalled Chrome and reinstalled it. On re-install, a toolbar automatically installed with Chrome. BitTorrentBar. I did not install BitTorrentBar, it installed on it's own. Bad. When BitTorrentBar was active, then ajax functions on facebook worked. When I deactivated or uninstalled BittorrentBar from Chrome extensions, then ajax stopped working. I ran scanned the computer with Avast (free version) and SpyBot Search and Destroy (also free). They found nothing wrong. I uninstalled Chrome using Control Panel and then I went through my file system deleting anything that had "google", "BitTorrent", "chrome", or "conduit". Conduit seems to distribute BitTorrentBar. After doing all that, I tried to reinstall Chrome. I got this error: System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception: The system cannot find the file specified at System.Diagnostics.Process.StartWithShellExecuteEx(ProcessStartInfo startInfo) at System.Diagnostics.Process.Start() at System.Diagnostics.Process.Start(ProcessStartInfo startInfo) at ClickOnceBootStrap.ClickOnceEntry.Main() This error interupts the Chrome install every time! computer scans don't show anything wrong. So then, I thought this might be a .net framework error. Perhaps I deleted something I wasn't supposed to. So I reinstalled .NET Framework 4 and checked the repair option. I also ran Windows Updates. When I tried to download Chrome, again I got the same error as listed above. What should I do?

• How to whitelist external access to an internal webserver via Cisco ACLs?

  This is our company's internet gateway router. This is what I want to accomplish on our Cisco 2691 router: All employees need to be able to have unrestricted access to the internet (I've blocked facebook with an ACL, but other than that, full access) There is an internal webserver that should be accessible from any internal IP address, but only a select few external IP addresses. Basically, I want to whitelist access from outside the network. I don't have a hardware firewall appliance. Until now, the webserver has not needed to be accessible externally... or in any case, the occasional VPN has sufficed when needed. As such, the following config has been sufficient: access-list 106 deny ip 66.220.144.0 0.0.7.255 any access-list 106 deny ip ... (so on for the Facebook blocking) access-list 106 permit ip any any ! interface FastEthernet0/0 ip address x.x.x.x 255.255.255.248 ip access-group 106 in ip nat outside fa0/0 is the interface with the public IP However, when I add... ip nat inside source static tcp 192.168.0.52 80 x.x.x.x 80 extendable ...in order to forward web traffic to the webserver, that just opens it up entirely. That much makes sense to me. This is where I get stumped though. If I add a line to the ACL to explicitly permit (whitelist) an IP range... something like this: access-list 106 permit tcp x.x.x.x 0.0.255.255 192.168.0.52 0.0.0.0 eq 80 ... how do I then block other external access to the webserver while still maintaining unrestricted internet access for internal employees? I tried removing the access-list 106 permit ip any any. That ended up being a very short-lived config :) Would something like access-list 106 permit ip 192.168.0.0 0.0.0.255 any on an "outside-inbound" work?

• Google Chrome not loading web pages correctly unless multiple refreshes

  Webpages in Google Chrome do not load correctly from time to time. I can't reproduce it, it just happens. Some times it happens when I load the browser other times it happens when I am just browsing. Just now I went to five different web sites which 3 out of 5 of them did not load correctly. I have attached a photo of how Super User loaded the first time I loaded it. If I refreshed it it will load correctly. Facebook is bad like this. Some times Facebook will load correctly but some of there back end scripting may not load so the page may not refresh automatically. Not sure what is going on. I have tried other browsers (Firefox and Internet Explorer) and they seem to be working correctly. Chrome seems to be acting up only on this computer. All my computers are running Windows 8 and I have removed Chrome completely off this computer and re-installed. I even disabled all extensions and cleared all the caches. I even tried running Chrome without being logged in. Not sure what else to do at this point. An example of superuser.com not loading correctly: When I refresh the problem will go away until it happens again. Sometimes it takes two or three refreshes in order for it to correctly load.

• Finding ALL currently used IP addresses of Website

  What steps would you take to discover all (or close to all) IP addresses that are currently used by a website? How would you be as exhaustive as possible without calling a website admin and asking for the list of IP addresses? ;) nslookup works but will vary based on dns server queried. whois is another good tool. Dig, not bad. Let's use Facebook for example. I'm blocking that site for the majority our our company's users, but some are approved for "research". I can not easily use OpenDNS because we all appear to come from the same request IP address. I could change that but don't want to add more vlans than I already have. I also could use block something like regex facebook1 "facebook\.com" (I'm running a cisco firewall) but that's pretty easy to sidestep. All that being said, I'm asking about specifically about finding ip addresses for a domain and not for other methods that I can block a domain name.

• Blocking HTTPS and P2P Traffic

  I have a Debian server running at the gateway level on a LAN. This runs squid for creating block lists of websites - for eg. blocking social networking on the LAN. Also uses iptables. I am able to do a lot of things with squid & iptables, but a few things seem difficult to achieve. 1) If I block facebook through their http url, people can still access https://www.facebook.com because squid doesn't go through https traffic by default. However, if the users set the gateway IP address as proxy on their web browser, then https is also blocked. So I can do one thing - using iptables drop all outgoing 443 traffic, so that people are forced to set proxy on their browser in order to browse any HTTPS traffic. However, is there a better solution for this. 2) As the number of blocked urls increase in squid, I am planning to integrate squidguard. However, the good squidguard lists are not free for commercial use. Anyone knows of a good squidguard list which is free. 3) Block yahoo messenger, gtalk etc. There are so many ports on which these Instant Messenger softwares work. You need to drop lots of outgoing ports in iptables. However, new ports get added, so you have to keep adding them. And even if your list of ports is current, people can still use the web version of gtalk etc. 4) Blocking P2P. Haven't been able to figure out how to do this till now.

• Work from home on an iPad?

  The situation: My wife has a 13" MacBook Pro that she uses for email, Facebook, web surfing, and working from home. I'm about to buy us our first iPad. My wife's brother's computer just went belly-up, and she's contemplating giving him her MacBook and just using the iPad. The question is whether or not this is possible or realistic. Obviously, the iPad is well-suited for the email/web/Facebook tasks, but the working-from-home thing is an absolute must -- if the iPad can't handle that, it's a deal-breaker. For my wife, working from home means two things: Accessing her workplace computer's Windows Vista desktop, which she currently does via Remote Desktop. Editing Office documents locally, which she currently syncs via Dropbox. Being able to edit documents locally is important, because sometimes she will download documents and edit them when she doesn't have network access (e.g. on the subway). I'm more than happy to get a keyboard dock for her, so typing won't be an issue. Are there any iPad apps she can use to access her work computer and edit her work files? Thanks for any suggestions!

• Cant configure DNS properly on centos

  I am on a VPS i must manage my own. I have network problems because in the last days many of my users report they cant enter my site from my domain and seems like Google and Facebook cant either (this never happened before). However i can enter my site without problems and so many other people as well. So i tested by making a php include like this <?php include 'http://mysite.com/somepage.php'; ?> and i get this error: Warning: include(): php_network_getaddresses: getaddrinfo failed: Name or service not known in I even tried by including content from yahoo.com or facebook and didnt work either. However the includes will work if i use IPs instead of domains. Do i have a DNS problem or something? What can i do to fix it? Im on a Linux 2.6.32-431.11.2.el6.x86_64 on x86_64 CentOS Linux 6.5 I have this on my resolv.conf # Generated by NetworkManager # No nameservers found; try putting DNS servers into your # ifcfg files in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts like so: # # DNS1=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx # DNS2=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx # DOMAIN=lab.foo.com bar.foo.com nameserver 8.8.8.8 nameserver 8.8.4.4 Thank you.

• Using an alternate JSON Serializer in ASP.NET Web API

  The new ASP.NET Web API that Microsoft released alongside MVC 4.0 Beta last week is a great framework for building REST and AJAX APIs. I've been working with it for quite a while now and I really like the way it works and the complete set of features it provides 'in the box'. It's about time that Microsoft gets a decent API for building generic HTTP endpoints into the framework. DataContractJsonSerializer sucks As nice as Web API's overall design is one thing still sucks: The built-in JSON Serialization uses the DataContractJsonSerializer which is just too limiting for many scenarios. The biggest issues I have with it are: No support for untyped values (object, dynamic, Anonymous Types) MS AJAX style Date Formatting Ugly serialization formats for types like Dictionaries To me the most serious issue is dealing with serialization of untyped objects. I have number of applications with AJAX front ends that dynamically reformat data from business objects to fit a specific message format that certain UI components require. The most common scenario I have there are IEnumerable query results from a database with fields from the result set rearranged to fit the sometimes unconventional formats required for the UI components (like jqGrid for example). Creating custom types to fit these messages seems like overkill and projections using Linq makes this much easier to code up. Alas DataContractJsonSerializer doesn't support it. Neither does DataContractSerializer for XML output for that matter. What this means is that you can't do stuff like this in Web API out of the box:public object GetAnonymousType() { return new { name = "Rick", company = "West Wind", entered= DateTime.Now }; } Basically anything that doesn't have an explicit type DataContractJsonSerializer will not let you return. FWIW, the same is true for XmlSerializer which also doesn't work with non-typed values for serialization. The example above is obviously contrived with a hardcoded object graph, but it's not uncommon to get dynamic values returned from queries that have anonymous types for their result projections. Apparently there's a good possibility that Microsoft will ship Json.NET as part of Web API RTM release.  Scott Hanselman confirmed this as a footnote in his JSON Dates post a few days ago. I've heard several other people from Microsoft confirm that Json.NET will be included and be the default JSON serializer, but no details yet in what capacity it will show up. Let's hope it ends up as the default in the box. Meanwhile this post will show you how you can use it today with the beta and get JSON that matches what you should see in the RTM version. What about JsonValue? To be fair Web API DOES include a new JsonValue/JsonObject/JsonArray type that allow you to address some of these scenarios. JsonValue is a new type in the System.Json assembly that can be used to build up an object graph based on a dictionary. It's actually a really cool implementation of a dynamic type that allows you to create an object graph and spit it out to JSON without having to create .NET type first. JsonValue can also receive a JSON string and parse it without having to actually load it into a .NET type (which is something that's been missing in the core framework). This is really useful if you get a JSON result from an arbitrary service and you don't want to explicitly create a mapping type for the data returned. For serialization you can create an object structure on the fly and pass it back as part of an Web API action method like this:public JsonValue GetJsonValue() { dynamic json = new JsonObject(); json.name = "Rick"; json.company = "West Wind"; json.entered = DateTime.Now; dynamic address = new JsonObject(); address.street = "32 Kaiea"; address.zip = "96779"; json.address = address; dynamic phones = new JsonArray(); json.phoneNumbers = phones; dynamic phone = new JsonObject(); phone.type = "Home"; phone.number = "808 123-1233"; phones.Add(phone); phone = new JsonObject(); phone.type = "Home"; phone.number = "808 123-1233"; phones.Add(phone); //var jsonString = json.ToString(); return json; } which produces the following output (formatted here for easier reading):{ name: "rick", company: "West Wind", entered: "2012-03-08T15:33:19.673-10:00", address: { street: "32 Kaiea", zip: "96779" }, phoneNumbers: [ { type: "Home", number: "808 123-1233" }, { type: "Mobile", number: "808 123-1234" }] } If you need to build a simple JSON type on the fly these types work great. But if you have an existing type - or worse a query result/list that's already formatted JsonValue et al. become a pain to work with. As far as I can see there's no way to just throw an object instance at JsonValue and have it convert into JsonValue dictionary. It's a manual process. Using alternate Serializers in Web API So, currently the default serializer in WebAPI is DataContractJsonSeriaizer and I don't like it. You may not either, but luckily you can swap the serializer fairly easily. If you'd rather use the JavaScriptSerializer built into System.Web.Extensions or Json.NET today, it's not too difficult to create a custom MediaTypeFormatter that uses these serializers and can replace or partially replace the native serializer. Note that when creating output you want to take care to still allow JsonValue/JsonObject/JsonArray types to be handled by the default serializer so those objects serialize properly - if you let either JavaScriptSerializer or JSON.NET handle them they'd try to render the dictionaries which is very undesirable. I think this thing is seriously misnamed given that GlobalConfiguration could stand for anything and so is hard to discover if you don't know what you're looking for. How about WebApiConfiguration or something more descriptive? Anyway, once you know what it is you can use the Formatters collection to insert your custom formatter. Note that I insert my formatter at the top of the list so it takes precedence over the default formatter. I also am not removing the old formatter because I still want JsonValue/JsonObject/JsonArray to be handled by the default serialization mechanism. Since they process in sequence and I exclude processing for these types JsonValue et al. still get properly serialized/deserialized. Summary Currently DataContractJsonSerializer in Web API is a pain, but at least we have the ability with relatively limited effort to replace the MediaTypeFormatter and plug in our own JSON serializer. This is useful for many scenarios - if you have existing client applications that used MVC JsonResult or ASP.NET AJAX results from ASMX AJAX services you can plug in the JavaScript serializer and get exactly the same serializer you used in the past so your results will be the same and don't potentially break clients. JSON serializers do vary a bit in how they serialize some of the more complex types (like Dictionaries and dates for example) and so if you're migrating it might be helpful to ensure your client code doesn't break when you switch to ASP.NET Web API. Going forward it looks like Microsoft is planning on plugging in Json.Net into Web API and make that the default. I think that's an awesome choice since Json.net has been around forever, is fast and easy to use and provides a ton of functionality as part of this great library. I just wish Microsoft would have figured this out sooner instead of now at the last minute integrating with it especially given that Json.Net has a similar set of lower level JSON objects JsonValue/JsonObject etc. which now will end up being duplicated by the native System.Json stuff. It's not like we don't already have enough confusion regarding which JSON serializer to use (JavaScriptSerializer, DataContractJsonSerializer, JsonValue/JsonObject/JsonArray and now Json.net). For years I've been using my own JSON serializer because the built in choices are both limited. However, with an official encorsement of Json.Net I'm happily moving on to use that in my applications. • Nashorn in the Twitterverse, Continued

  After doing the Twitter example, it seemed reasonable to try graphing the result with JavaFX.  At this time the Nashorn project doesn't have an JavaFX shell, so we have to go through some hoops to create an JavaFX application.  I thought showing you some of those hoops might give you some idea about what you can do mixing Nashorn and Java (we'll add a JavaFX shell to the todo list.) Okay, with the meat out of the way, let's talk about the hoops. When working with JavaFX, you start with a main subclass of javafx.application.Application.  This class handles the initialization of the JavaFX libraries and the event processing.  This is what I used for this example; import java.io.IOException; import java.io.InputStream; import java.io.InputStreamReader; import javafx.application.Application; import javafx.stage.Stage; import javax.script.ScriptEngine; import javax.script.ScriptEngineManager; import javax.script.ScriptException; public class TrendingMain extends Application { private static final ScriptEngineManager MANAGER = new ScriptEngineManager(); private final ScriptEngine engine = MANAGER.getEngineByName("nashorn"); private Trending trending; public static void main(String[] args) { launch(args); } @Override public void start(Stage stage) throws Exception { trending = (Trending) load("Trending.js"); trending.start(stage); } @Override public void stop() throws Exception { trending.stop(); } private Object load(String script) throws IOException, ScriptException { try (final InputStream is = TrendingMain.class.getResourceAsStream(script)) { return engine.eval(new InputStreamReader(is, "utf-8")); } } } To initialize Nashorn, we use JSR-223's javax.script.  private static final ScriptEngineManager MANAGER = new ScriptEngineManager(); private final ScriptEngine engine = MANAGER.getEngineByName("nashorn"); This code sets up an instance of the Nashorn engine for evaluating scripts. The  load method reads a script into memory and then gets engine to eval that script.  Note, that load also returns the result of the eval. Now for the fun part.  There are several different approaches we could use to communicate between the Java main and the script.  In this example we'll use a Java interface.  The JavaFX main needs to do at least start and stop, so the following will suffice as an interface; public interface Trending {     public void start(Stage stage) throws Exception;     public void stop() throws Exception; } At the end of the example's script we add; (function newTrending() {     return new Packages.Trending() {         start: function(stage) {             var data = getTrendingData();             graph(stage, data);             stage.show();         },         stop: function() {         }     } })(); which instantiates a new subclass instance of Trending and overrides the start and stop methods.  The result of this function call is what is returned to main via the eval. trending = (Trending) load("Trending.js"); To recap, the script Trending.js contains functions getTrendingData, graph and newTrending, plus the call at the end to newTrending.  Back in the Java code, we cast the result of the eval (call to newTrending) to Trending, thus, we end up with an object that we can then use to call back into the script.  trending.start(stage); Voila. ?

  I have an Excel graph with a linear trend line to keep track of users who are updated with a newer version of software: I have 660 users, and the trend line predicts where the number updated reaches 660 to indicate updates complete. Is there a way for it to either give me an actual value for that intercept, or, more conveniently, draw a vertical intercept line where the trend line is projected to hit that number?
