  • backup without overwriting old backups

    I'm using Ubuntu server 14.04 to backup all data from '/mnt/test/ folder' to '/home/john/' with TAR and archive to stuff.tar.gz and to make it to backup automatical. I use cron to backup it every week so what if i want to use cron to create an additional backup file instead of overwriting the existing one? So, after month I'd have 4 backups, each with a unique name. Is there a way? Script ar other backup tool what would do that?

    I'm trying to get my TV (connected via HDMI cable) to act as a second monitor to watch video etc. The TV is to my left, so in Display Preferences I unticked "Mirror Screens" and put the monitors like this: -------- ---------- | PC | | TV | | | ---------- -------- When I do this, the PC monitor comes up with just the desktop wallpaper and the interface - taskbar and windows, etc - moves to the TV screen. But if I swap the monitors around, the taskbars are still on the TV screen, with the windows (and desktop icons) on the PC screen.   • Sound quality in bluetooth headphones doesn't change to high

    My Bluetooth headset Philips SHB6610 has several profiles. It can work as low-quality headset (HFP) and high-quality headphones (A2DP). I mean sound quality. Typically whenever I start to play the music in my media player it works in high quality, while if I receive a call on Skype it switches to low-quality. Once call is finished it falls back on high quality again. However, from time to time, it happens that I connect headphones to the computer and they just stay in low-quality mode. I don't know how can I change the profile manually, since it was always done automatically so far. The only thing that helps (but not always) is re-pairing of headphones with PC. I am using Windows 7 on Toshiba Satellite Pro P300-1CG laptop, with Belkin Mini Bluetooth Adapter.

    The system of pc is win7 32bit, the video card is ATI 4670. The tv is philips 74xx series. And the monitor is Dell 19' that connect with pc via VGA. The tv can receive the singal and show the pictures when booting the pc(bios self checking, the logo of windows 7), however the tv says there is no signal after the win7 login window shows. I have installed the latest CCC and driver of ATI video card. Does anyone have idea for it?

  • No dialogues can be heard in a movie with a 5.1 audio

    I recently purchased 'PHILIPS DSP56U' 5.l multimedia system and got it connected with my laptop. All the speakers are connected good and all the channels responded well for the test sounds. The stereo music tracks and other normal movies (stereo) plays good. I'm having a problem with playing a movie with a 5.1 audio track. I can hear the background soundtrack, weapon effects, but I cannot hear the dialogues (which I assume to be a separate track). I'm using VLC to play the movie and it would be grateful if someone help me through this :)

    I bought a replacement screen for an Asus Eee netbook 1005HA from a company that said the screen they were selling was compatible, but the connector on the replacement is smaller than the original. I've scoured the net for instructions, but so far, I'm out of luck. As far as I can tell, they both have 32 pins, but maybe I'm missing a connector?     I've got a question similar to this one: Is looking for code examples constantly a sign of a bad developer? though not entirely. I got off college 2 years ago and I'm currently struggling with a University study. Most likely I'll have to drop out and start working within the next couple of months. Now here's the pickle. I have no speciality what so ever. When I got out of college I had worked with C, C++ and Java. I had had an internship at NEC-Philips and got familiar with C# (.NET) and I taught myself how it worked. After college I started working with PHP, HTML,SQL, MySQL Javascript and Jquery. I'm currently teaching myself Ruby on Rails and thus Ruby. At my university I also got familiar with MATLAB. As you can see I've got a broad scope of languages and frameworks I'm familiar with, but none I know inside-out. So I guess this kinda applies to me: "Jack of all trades, master of none.". I've been looking for jobs and I've noticed that most of them require some years of experience with a certain language and some specifications that apply to that language. My question is: How do I pick a speciality? And how do I know if I'll actually enjoy it? As I've worked with loads of languages how would I be able to tell this is right for me? I don't like being tied down to a specific role and I quite like being a generalist. But in order to make more money I would need a specialisation.     I have a problem on which I'm struggling since i started using linux a year ago on my desktop, but still haven't found a solution for it. When reading or burning a dvd, the speeds are very slow (mostly under 1x) whilst I did selected the fastest speed in k3b. As such, it takes up to 40-50 minutes to burn one dvd!   • After upgrading to 12.04 from 10.10 my mythbuntu standard MCEUSB remote no longer works

    I had no problems using my Windows Media Center Remote with 10.10 Mythbuntu, but after upgrading, it no longer affects Mythbuntu. I have verified and re-installed it in Mythbuntu Control Centre. I have used irw to verify the ir buttons actions are properly received by the HTPC.     I have a Microsoft IntelliMouse connected via USB to a computer (directly, NOT via hub) currently running Ubuntu 11.10, but this problem also existed before we upgraded from 10.10. Every now and then (apparently randomly) the computer "pauses" for anything up to a few seconds.   • external usb hard drive is not being seen anymore

    I think my problem is a little different than several other similar titled questions. Everything started while I was using 10.10. External drive was always recognized and mounted, but the timing of this differed. I mean when I booted, the OS sometimes saw the drive immediately, sometimes after a few minutes, sometimes after hours. Although this was annoying, I tolerated this somehow. Then this problem persisted after I upgraded to 11.04 with a clean install. Afterwards, the drive became totally invisible to the OS. It is not even detected as an usb device anymore. However, there is one thing I can do to make it seen. If I boot to another operating system which can detect the drive, and then boot back to ubuntu, everything is perfect. but this is of course very impractical. To summarize, the usb drive is recognized by ubuntu if and only if another OS in the same computer could recognize it first. I should also say I have not had any problems with the same drive in any other OS or a different computer. My drive is philips with a hitachi hdd inside, has its own power source and any other usb powered drives have never caused this kind of a problem. I've tried almost all recommendations in similar topics but none of them seems to be related to this one. What can I possibly do to fix this?

    OK I've read tons of fourms of people getting the onboard RTL8192SE working and the RTL8192SU working dif is U = USB they are both N and i have both Toshiba L500D-00T pre-installed Win Vistax64-HP and i have obtained the free Win7x64-HP upgrade the onboard wificard sucks and can't hold a stable connection for more then 20minutes in windows but the usb is amazing. Now problem is i tried both Ubuntu and Mandriva with no resolve the issue is the onboard drive detects and actually SHOWS that it's there but no wireless networks detect so it's saying no SSID's are broadcasting which i know is a lie since I'm running a 2wire bell dsl modem with built in wifi and a Linksys wrt54g w/ DD-WRT firmware and both are broadcasting fine. Why don't i use the USB? In the hardware device manager in mandriva it shows up as unknown but shows that it's realtek and that it's a 8192 chipset. but no option to for a driver install and when i do a make in terminal i get this error and no clue what it means [root@John-PC rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0010.1020.2009_64bit]# make make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.31.12-desktop-3mnb/build: No such file or directory.   • Bacula v5.0.2 Windows Installation Issues

    First off, I am very new to Bacula but I'm very intriqued from what I've read. I'm looking to set up Bacula 5.0.2 on a Windows 2008 R2 server. I've run the installer and at the end it asks me to configure DIR name, DIR password, DIR Address. Windows documentation is somewhat hard to come by and I'm not certain what exactly I'm supposed to enter here. Do I need to create a local account that matches this info? Will the installation process create the account for me? Will this be the account that handles the FD daemon/service? I'm also not certain if Address means network location or local direcory. I apologize for my ignorance. Currently I'm trying to use the following information: Name: john pass: john address: thin1 (server name although I have also tried thin1.fqdm.local and 10.0.0.104) This info allows for the installer to complete successfully. However, when I run the BAT it hangs at, "Connecting to Director thin1:9101". The Bacula File Service is currently running under the local system account. What am I doing wrong? What do I have yet to do? Once I get this working properly I assume I will need to install clients on all my Windows boxes? Also, this is a 64-bit cpu but I am installing the 32-bit client. Are there any issues with this? Should I be using the 32-bit client? Thanks very much for the help.

    Hi there. I don't understand, how does 'smart addresses' in Mail.app work. Recently I mentioned, that for some emails I don't see person's full name in 'From' column. I started to dig into this behavior and found out, that I have few contacts in my Address Book, that are not recognized by Mail.app. Here how it looks: I have a person in Address Book with filled email entry and filled first/last name (localized). I have an incoming email from that person (from email specified in Address Book), but first/last name in the email itself doesn't match with ones specified in Address Book (e. g. 'From' field in email looks like 'John [work] <[email protected]>' while Address Book entry is 'John Smith' (localized, in Russian)). And Mail.app doesn't recognize that this mail is originating from that person in Address Book: if I click on 'From' field, it suggests to me to add sender to Address Book, while for others' emails I have 'Show in Address Book' menu entry (especially for ones with full localized name in 'From' field). I'm wondering, is that behavior correct or I'm missing something? I'm using Snow Leopard & Mail 4.0; my system language set to English, if that matters. I'd like to have some clarifications on that Mail.app behavior: whenever it fixable or not (and if it's fixable, I'd like to see a fix). By the way, is it possible to match sender's address against Address Book entry in filter rules or not? Why don't i use the USB? new in Mandriva Linux Control Center 2010.0 it shows up in Other/Unknown as RTL8191S WLAN Adapter and on the right pane this shows up Identification Vendor: ?Manufacturer Realtek Description: ?RTL8191S WLAN Adapter Media class: ? Connection Bus: ?USB Bus PCI #: ?1 PCI device #: ?5 Vendor ID: ?0x0bda Device ID: ?0x8172 Sub vendor ID: ?0x0000 Sub device ID: ?0x0000 Misc Module: ?rtl819xU In the hardware device manager in mandriva it shows up as unknown but shows that it's realtek and that it's a 8192 chipset. but no option to for a driver install and when i do a make in terminal i get this error and no clue what it means [root@John-PC rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0010.1020.2009_64bit]# make make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.31.12-desktop-3mnb/build: No such file or directory.
