• can I force server to always use turboboost?

  I'm using HP DL360p Gen8 with 2 * Xeon E5-2640. I do not load CPU 100%, i load it only ~10% and so I guess turboboost is not activated. However I'm using my server for trading so I absolutely don't care about CPU loading but I always want to process my data asap. So I want server to operate using maximum 3 GHz. I.e. 90% of CPU time I don't have anything to process. 10% of CPU time I have data to process. But I need to process it ASAP. I need every single microsecond. So I want server to operate always at maximum "turboboosted" mode. Is it possible?

• How to check for bottlenecks in Windows Server 2008 R2

  I recently switched out a 10 year old server for a brand new server in a small office and upgraded from Windows Server 2000 to Windows Server 2008 R2. After the switch was complete and some configurations were changed around we are running into what appear to be some bottlenecks in the network speed. Accessing programs on the server is slower (resulting in long loading times, slower report generation, etc.) than it was on the old server hardware. I am wondering what options or tools I have, if there are any at all, to find out exactly where these hang ups might be coming from.

• Scanned JPEGs are large and slow to load - can they be optimized losslessly?

  I have hundreds of JPEG photographs which were scanned about 5 years ago from negative using a Konica Minolta DiMAGE Scan Dual IV. The dimensions are ~4500x3000, and the filesize is around 12Mb, compared to shots from a DSLR with dimensions of 3000x2300 and filesize of 2-4Mb (actually, these are the output from a RAW convertor). The filesize is obviously quite a big difference, but the issue that's bothering me is that the (perceived) loading time is at least 10 times slower. Is this size/speed discrepancy likely to be because the scanner software saved the JPEGs inefficiently / using an old compression format, or is it simply that the scanned negatives contain much more "detail" (in the form of grain/noise) than the digital images? If the former, is there a way to losslessly optimize them? I've tried re-exporting the scanned files to full size JPEG from my RAW software but the filesize is pretty much the same. Both files will have been saved at 100 quality.

• Macbook start's up but is unresponsive

  I have a original Macbook, which I bought second hand last year, up until recently it had been working fine, I had had to upgrade the ram to 4gb and buy a new battery but had no other issues. Recently when I have turned my Macbook on it boots up fine however it is completely unresponsive after loading everything for several minutes. I can move the mouse around the screen but cannot selective anything with the cursor nor do any of the function keys or keyboard shortcuts work. After several minutes however everything works fine, this is rather inconvenient as I would prefer to not have to wait five minutes after turning my Macbook on before I can use it. I was wondering what might cause this temporary unresponsiveness and if there was a way I could fix the problem?

• Strange message during the Linux boot and slow start caused by "udevd[336] timeout ... "

  When Debian (wheezy testing version) is loading, at a certain point appears a strange message: udevd[336] timeout usb_id--export /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1a.0/usb1/1-1/1-2.2/1-1.2:1.0 video4linux/ [502] after this message, start another message that loops for 120 secs: udevd[336] killing /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1a.0/usb1/1-1/1-2.2/1-1.2:1.0 video4linux/ [502] When the loop finish, Debian start normally and nothing seems to be "broken"! I also killed the loop with CTRL-C to break the loop and the system doesn't give any problem. Does anyone know a possible answer?

• Blue Screen at booting Windows 2000 virtual

  well i hope this stackexchange site is the right for my issue. I've an Oracle VirtualBox running on some acer pc Settings for the Acer PC: Windows 7 SP1 64bit Intel G630 @ 2.7Ghz 2GB RAM i used a .vhd image which contains a windows 2000 system with some preconfigured stuff and software for a customer. At the Windows boot time immediately after the "Loading Windows 2000..." - Screen i get the following Error: Sorry for the German Text but it say's something like "Check the Size of your HDD. If the error contains a driver, deactivate it and try again. Or change the graficcard" The HDD Size shouldn't be a problem in my honest opinion. Can anyone give me an adivce what i can try to do? I just tested the same combination of the .vhd image and oracle virtualbox on another computer. Same issue. Greetings

  I am using ipsec-tools/racoon to create my VPN. I am using racoon-tool to configure racoon.conf but when I run racoon-tool reload it only generates the first section - Global items. • GRUB Error after Deleting Linux Partition

  I was dual-booting with Windows 7 and Windows Vista each taking up half of my hard drive. In Windows 7 I used Easeus Partition Manager to shrink my Windows 7 volume 8GB. On the unallocated space, I installed Linux Mint 8 RC1. After a little bit of playing around with it, I booted in Windows 7, used EPM again and deleted the 8GB Linux partition. I then extended Windows 7 on the 8GB. After restarting my computer, all I get is a black screen and this: GRUB loading. error: no such partition grub rescue> I do not have a Windows 7 disk nor does my computer come with Startup Repair. What do I do?

• Daemons die with bus error when their binaries live on NFS

  We have some daemons executing on a number of hosts. The daemon executable images are these very large binaries that are hosted on NFS. When the binaries are updated on the NFS server, the previously running daemons sometimes drop dead with a Bus error. I'm assuming what's happening is the NFS server is replacing the binaries in a way that's invisible to the VFS layer on the NFS clients so they end up loading pages from the updated binary, which of course leads to madness. We tried moving the new binaries into place instead of cp, but that doesn't seem to fix it. I'm considering simply mlock()'ing the binary in the daemon startup script, but surely there's magic NFS options or semantics that we should be abusing. Is there a better way to fix this?

• How do you create a bootable partition on a USB drive?

  I have a bootable ISO designed to be burned to a double-layer DVD. I don't have a double layer DVD burner, so I would like to stick the ISO image on a 50 GB partition on a USB hard drive I have. How do I get the boot info onto the hard drive? If it helps, it's an OSx86 Live CD.   I'm having a problem with Ubuntu that I'm finding hard to troubleshoot for reasons that will become clear: reboot -bash: /sbin/reboot: Input/output error dmesg -bash: /bin/dmesg: Input/output error ps -e ps: error while loading shared libraries: /lib/libproc-3.2.8.so: cannot read file data: Input/output error lsof -bash: /usr/bin/lsof: Input/output error fsck -bash: /sbin/fsck: Input/output error badblocks -bash: /sbin/badblocks: Input/output error So I can't see what is going on, and I can't remotely reboot. What can I do to get to the bottom of this? Interestingly: init 0 Segmentation fault I can cat /var/syslog but not /var/log/messages or several other important files. less and more don't work, neither do tail or head, etc.

• pass data from popup to parent

  I have a parent w/ a popup child. When parent loads, I have to call a function within the popup without showing the popup (thus, I load "pupLove" but don't include it in layout)....I then pass this data to the parent. When the user manually clicks another button to open the popup, the same function is called & data passed to the parent. However, I am not able to pass dg.length to the parent. I believe the root problem is that I am loading "pupLove" & thus the parents are getting confused.....I'm guessing if I get rid of "pupLove" I can pass the data correctly but will need to call the child's function at creationComplete of the parent....how do I do that? • Weird problem, special characters after formatting the hard drive, computer not starting 0_o

  Hya friends , Last night my computer was working fine. But today when i came back from college and started it , it was starting fine but after sometime it's getting restarted , again and again getting restarted at different points , so i tried to boot it in safe mode but same problem. Now after all this , i finally decided to format the drive C (it is in 80 GB) and load new OS windows XP3. After formatting and loading xp3 sufficient files , when it was getting rebooted for copying the actual os files , it hung and a weird screen came. • Apache 2.4 and PHP 5.4 getting connection reset errors in the browser

  In the weekend I upgraded my development web server to Apache 2.4 and PHP 5.4. In my web application which was previously working great on Apache 2.2 and PHP 5.3 it now starts getting these messages saying the "connection was reset" in Firefox. See screenshot. I am connecting to the linux machine via local LAN. I'm assuming it might be something to do with the new version of Apache or PHP, or the new LAMP stack which I downloaded from BitNami? It would seem to happen every 5-10 requests and throw this error, perhaps more likely to trigger it is if I send a POST request from a page. Is it timing out the script or something? These are just basic dynamic pages I'm loading and they worked perfectly in Apache 2.2 and PHP5.3. Here are my httpd.conf and PHP.ini if that has any clues. Any ideas? Any help much appreciated.

Once traffic reaches ~ 20 people (online) - website start loading really really slow. Actually website can't be loaded about 30-60 sec. What should I do? Buy more RAM / CPU on the same VPS? Move to a dedicated server or maybe myhosting.com just sucks? What do you recommend?

• Dropped Dell XPS has hard-drive trouble

  Yesterday, my mom dropped her laptop to the floor and got the blue screen of death after trying to boot the system. I was able to start a Fedora live CD and get some of her stuff off the hard drive, but I cannot seem to be able to install Windows on it. The installation starts loading files and then the computer turns off. I am thinking that she might need a new hard drive. Any ideas? Edit: I actually was able to boot the Windows XP installation but it is saying that no hard disk is detected. How can this be possible if I was able to mount the drive on fedora yesterday?

• Can't see any YouTube videos

  I have a problem with watching YouTube videos. It says: "An error occurred, please try again later". I've tried loading different videos and that's what it says to all the videos I try to watch. I've tried using another browser, clearing cache + cookies etc, but none of that really worked out. My operating system is Windows 7 Home Premium, I use Google Chrome as my browser. And the YouTube videos was able to be watched earlier. I suspect that it has something to do with the PC, since I've got YouTube working on my laptop earlier. Not sure if it still works on my laptop though. Hope I've given enough information for you to help me out with this problem. Feel free to ask if there's anything else you need to know. Anyone who can help me out?

• Escaping query strings with wget --mirror

  I'm using wget --mirror --html-extension --convert-links to mirror a site, but I end up with lots of filenames in the format post.php?id=#.html. When I try to view these in a browser it fails, because the browser ignores the query string when loading the file. Is there any way to replace the ? character in the filenames with something else? The answer of --restrict-file-names=windows worked correctly. • How do you change the "scan this dir for additional ini files" path?

  I managed to get the custom INI to load, but its still loading other .ini files from the default location. I created an fcgi wrapper that passed the ini value as a parameter. That worked. Now just these other ini's need to be loaded from the same dir as my custom ini. The problem is the other .ini files are overriding the settings in my custom php.ini =/ I realize the problem now is that the php.fcgi was compiled with a custom path parameter. So that's a problem. I might have to recompile it using a different location or none at all. I'd hate to have to compile an fcgi for each domain =/

• Minimal Fedora Installation

  I am working on a Fedora 13 minimal iso image with no Desktop environment. I just need wxPython support. I removed the gnome from kickstart and build the iso image using livecd-creator. But now my application is not loading as gnome is gone. Earlier my application(myapp.desktop) was placed in /usr/share/gnome/autostart/ and starts automatically. So what should i do now the run my application? To run my wxPython appalication should i have to install display manager(xdm, gdm, kdm etc..)? If i install gdm, it takes lots of space. what should i do? In short i need Fedora 13 minimal iso image with no desktop environment and with wxPython support.

• Need disc image help pronto!

  I recently got a job as a junior network administrator. Last week the senior admins did their yearly reinstall of server 2003, exchange, drivers etc on the main server. I've been asked to back up the disc so that next year they can just copy over the pre-made image. What tools can i use to achieve both the creation of the entire servers HDD image and loading it back on (id like to test it in the sandbox.) To impress them, a program that is free is preferable. And maybe a tool that can do it all from booting the program off of a USB drive.

• Where does linux look for shared libs?

  I am trying to get the ar command on an embedded ARM computer running linux. I want to install debian and openjdk. It is a headless system. This is a custom linux distribution provided by the hardware manufacturer. The debian installer is missing the ar command so i tried copying the binaries from the debian package, but when running ar I get error while loading shared libraries: libbfd-2.18.0-multiarch.20080103.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory libbfd is also in the package. I tried linking it to /lib and /usr/lib but I get the same message when running. What is the best way to get debian and ar on a custom linux distro?

  I can't access http://developers.facebook.com on OS X Lion 10.7.1 in any way. Safari: Safari can't open the page because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection Chrome: Error 101 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_RESET): The connection was reset Firefox: The connection was reset. The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading. The problem might have been caused by DNS/cache and so on, so I tried the following but to no avail: Deleted cache/DNS Created a dummy user account on my Mac Reinstalled the OS (through the Internet and all my settings remain intact) Do you have any suggestions other than a fresh reinstallation of my Mac?
