Martijn Verburg (aka 'the Diabolical Developer') herds Cats in the Java/open source communities and is constantly humbled by the creative power to be found there. Currently he resides in London where he co-leads the London JUG (a JCP EC member), runs a couple of open source projects & drinks too much beer at his local pub. You can find him online moderating at the Javaranch or discussing (ranting?) subjects on the Prgorammers Stack Exchange site.   • Java Developer Days India Trip Report

    You are probably aware of Oracle's decision to discontinue the relatively resource intensive regional JavaOnes in favor of more Java Developer Days, virtual events and deeper involvement with independent conferences. In comparison to the regional JavaOnes, Java Developer Days are smaller, shorter (typically one full day), more focused (mostly Oracle speakers/topics) and more local (targeting cities). For those who have been around the Java ecosystem for a few years, they are basically the current incarnation of the highly popular and developer centric Sun Tech Days. October 21st through October 25th I spoke at Java Developer Days India. This was basically three separate but identical events in the cities of Pune (October 21st), Chennai (October 24th) and Bangalore (October 25th). For those with some familiarity with India, other than Hyderabad these cities are India's IT powerhouses. The events were basically focused on Java EE. I delivered five of the sessions (yes, you read that right), while my friend NetBeans Group Product Manager Ashwin Rao delivered three talks. Jagadish Ramu from the GlassFish team India helped me out in Bangalore by delivering two sessions. It was also a pleasure to introduce my co-contributor to the Cargo Tracker Java EE Blue Prints project Vijay Nair at Bangalore during the opening talk. I thought it was a great dynamic between Ashwin and I flipping between talking about the new features and demoing live code in NetBeans. The following were my sessions (source PDF and abstracts posted as usual on my SlideShare account): JavaEE.Next(): Java EE 7, 8, and Beyond Building Java HTML5/WebSocket Applications with JSR 356 What’s New in Java Message Service 2 JAX-RS 2: New and Noteworthy in the RESTful Web Services API Using NoSQL with JPA, EclipseLink and Java EE The event went well and was packed in all three cities. The Q&A was great and Indian developers were particularly generous with kind words :-). It seemed the event and our presence was appreciated in the truest sense which I must say is a rarity. The events were exhausting but very rewarding at the same time. As hectic as the three city trip was I tried to see at least some of the major sights (mostly at night) since this was my very first time to India. I think the slideshow below is a good representation of the riddle wrapped up in an enigma that is India (and the rest of the Indian sub-continent for that matter): Ironically enough what struck me the most during this trip is the woman pictured below - Shushma. My chauffeur, tour guide and friend for a day, she fluidly navigated the madness that is Mumbai traffic with skills that would make Evel Knievel blush while simultaneously pointing out sights and prompting me to take pictures (Mumbai was my stopover and gateway to/from India). In some ways she is probably the most potent symbol of the new India. When we parted ways I told her she should take solace in the fact she has won mostly without a fight a potentially hazardous battle her sisters across the Arabian sea are still fighting. I'm not sure she entirely understood the significance of what I told her. I hope that she did. I also had occasion to take a pretty cool local bus ride from Chennai to Bangalore instead of yet another boring flight. All in all I really enjoyed the trip to India and hope to return again soon.   • Welcome To The Nashorn Blog

    Welcome to all.  Time to break the ice and instantiate The Nashorn Blog.  I hope to contribute routinely, but we are very busy, at this point, preparing for the next development milestone and, of course, getting ready for open source. So, if there are long gaps between postings please forgive. We're just coming back from JavaOne and are stoked by the positive response to all the Nashorn sessions. It was great for the team to have the front and centre slide from Georges Saab early in the keynote. It seems we have support coming from all directions. Most of the session videos are posted. Check out the links. Nashorn: Optimizing JavaScript and Dynamic Language Execution on the JVM. Unfortunately, Marcus - the code generation juggernaut,  got saddled with the first session of the first day. Still, he had a decent turnout. The talk focused on issues relating to optimizations we did to get good performance from the JVM. Much yet to be done but looking good. Nashorn: JavaScript on the JVM. This was the main talk about Nashorn. I delivered the little bit of this and a little bit of that session with an overview, a follow up on the open source announcement, a run through a few of the Nashorn features and some demos. The room was SRO, about 250±. High points: Sam Pullara, from Twitter, came forward to describe how painless it was to get Mustache.js up and running (20x over Rhino), and,  John Ceccarelli, from NetBeans came forward to describe how Nashorn has become an integral part of Netbeans. A healthy Q & A at the end was very encouraging. Meet the Nashorn JavaScript Team. Michel, Attila, Marcus and myself hosted a Q & A. There was only a handful of people in the room (we assume it was because of a conflicting session ;-) .) Most of the questions centred around Node.jar, which leads me to believe, Nashorn + Node.jar is what has the most interest. Akhil, Mr. Node.jar, sitting in the audience, fielded the Node.jar questions. Nashorn, Node, and Java Persistence. Doug Clarke, Akhil and myself, discussed the title topics, followed by a lengthy Q & A (security had to hustle us out.) 80 or so in the room. Lots of questions about Node.jar. It was great to see Doug's use of Nashorn + JPA. Nashorn in action, with such elegance and grace. Putting the Metaobject Protocol to Work: Nashorn’s Java Bindings. Attila discussed how he applied Dynalink to Nashorn. Good turn out for this session as well. I have a feeling that once people discover and embrace this hidden gem, great things will happen for all languages running on the JVM. Finally, there were quite a few JavaOne sessions that focused on non-Java languages and their impact on the JVM. I've always believed that one's tool belt should carry a variety of programming languages, not just for domain/task applicability, but also to enhance your thinking and approaches to problem solving. For the most part, future blog entries will focus on 'how to' in Nashorn, but if you have any suggestions for topics you want discussed, please drop a line.  Cheers.

  • Need Corrected htaccess File

    I'm attempting to use a wordpress plugin called WP Fast Cache which creates static html files from all your posts, pages and categories. It creates the following directory structure inside wp-content: wp_fast_cache example.com pagename index.html categoryname postname index.html basically just a nested directory structure and a final index.html for each item. And not the Wordpress 404, and janky apache 404. I need to find the correct syntax to route all requests that don't exist ie: files or directories to: wp-content/wp_fast_cache/hostname/request_uri/ So for example: Page: example.com/about-us/ => wp-content/wp_page_cache/example.com/about-us/index.html Post: example.com/my-category/my-awesome-post/ => wp-content/wp_fast_cache/example.com/my-category/my-awesome-post/index.html Category: example.com/news/ => wp-content/wp_fast_cache/example.com/news/index.html Any help is appreciated.

  • VPN - Accessing computer outside of network. Only works one way

    I could use some help here. My ideal goal is to create a VPN for 2 macs that are in different locations so that they can share each others screens and share files. I basically want to do what Logmein's Hamachi does, but without the 5 user limitation. I have set up the VPN on my Synology NAS at my house using the PPTP protocol. I could also use OpenVPN. The good news is that I can use a laptop outside of my home network to access any computer on my network at my house. The bad news is that I can not do the reverse. I want to use a computer in my home network (same network as the VPN server) to access a computer outside of my network (which is connected via VPN successfully). My internal IP is 192.168.1.xxx PPTP VPN assigns my laptop that is outside of my network with 192.168.5.xxx, but when I try to access it remotely either with afp://192.168.5.xxx or vnc://192.168.5.xxx I can't connect using either. Is this something that I should be able to do or is VPN only one way? I've also tried openvpn with the same results. Thanks for any help! -Dan

    I am trying to use the Parse.com REST API in Java. I have gone through the 4 solutions given here https://parse.com/docs/api_libraries and have selected Parse4J. After importing the source into Netbeans, along with importing the following libraries: org.slf4j:slf4j-api:jar:1.6.1 org.apache.httpcomponents:httpclient:jar:4.3.2 org.apache.httpcomponents:httpcore:jar:4.3.1 org.json:json:jar:20131018 commons-codec:commons-codec:jar:1.9 junit:junit:jar:4.11 ch.qos.logback:logback-classic:jar:0.9.28 ch.qos.logback:logback-core:jar:0.9.28 I ran the example code from https://github.com/thiagolocatelli/parse4j Parse.initialize(APP_ID, APP_REST_API_ID); // I replaced these with mine ParseObject gameScore = new ParseObject("GameScore"); gameScore.put("score", 1337); gameScore.put("playerName", "Sean Plott"); gameScore.put("cheatMode", false); gameScore.save(); And I got that it was missing org.apache.commons.logging, so I downloaded that and imported it.   • JEE6 Global JNDI Name and Maven Deployment

    I'm having some problems with the global JNDI names of my EJB resources which is (or at least will) cause my JNDI look ups to fail. The project is being developed on Netbeans and is a standard Maven Web Application. When my application is deployed to GF3.0 the application name is set to something like: com.example_myapp_war_1.0-SNAPSHOT which is all well and good from Netbeans point of view because it ensures the name is unique but it also means all the EJBs get global names such as this: java:global/com.example_myapp_war_1.0-SNAPSHOT/CustomerService This, of course, is going to cause problems because every time the version changes all the global names change (I've tested this by changing the version and the names indeed changed). The name is being generated from the POM file and it's a concatenation of: <groupId>com.example</groupId> <artifactId>myapp</artifactId> <packaging>war</packaging> <version>1.0-SNAPSHOT</version> Up until now I've got away with just injecting all the resources using @EJB but now I need to access the CustomerService EJB from a JSF Converter so I'm doing a JNDI look up like this: try { Context ctx = new InitialContext(); CustomerService customerService = (CustomerService)ctx.lookup( "java:global/com.example_myapp_war_1.0-SNAPSHOT/CustomerService" ); return customerService.get(submittedValue); } catch( Exception e ) { logger.error( "Failed to convert customer.", e ); return null; } which will clearly break when the application is properly released and the module name changes. So, the million dollar question: how can I set the modle name in maven or how do I recover the module name so that I can programatically build the JNDI name at runtile. I've tried setting it in the web.xml file as suggested by that link but it was ignored. I think I'd rather build the name at runtime as that means there is less scope for screw ups when the application is deployed. Many thanks for any help, I've been tearing my hair out all day on this.

  • How to link pnglite library in c?

    Hi, I installed from kubuntu's package management this handy pnglite library. It contains just one header file "pnglite.h" and one object file "pnglite.o". I have found out where those files are, but I don't know how to link them. I'm using netbeans, but don't know how to link them in there. Also I don't understand how to link them at console. I have a little test program that I would like to test, but I get the error message "undefined reference to function: XXXXXXX". Both netbeans and at console I'm using gcc. That header file is in /usr/include directory, object file is in /usr/lib directory and my test program is under my programming directory at my home directory. Should I put that header and object into the same directory as where my source is? Or is there a way to link them from their current locations? I know that it should be possible to link them from where they are at the moment and I would like to know and understand how to do that. Any help will be appreciated :)

  • Refreshing a JPA result list which is bound with a jTable

    First off, I hage to write this on my mobile. But I'll try to format it properly. In Netbeans I created a jTable and bound it's values to a JPA result set. This works great. The qery contains a param which i set in the pre-create box of the "query result" component. So just before netbeans creates the query result i write this: myQuery.setParameter("year", "1997"); This works fine. Now, I have an event handler which is supposed to change the param and display the new values in the table. So I do this: myQuery.setParameter("year", "2005"); myResultList.clear(); myResultList.addAll(myQuery.getResultList()); jTable1.updateUI(); This works, but it feels wrong to me. Note: the result set is bound to the table. So I was hoping there was something like this: myQuery.setParameter("year", "2005"); myResultList.refresh(); Is there something like this?

  • Tomcat deploy: make included scripts executable

    I'm devellopping a WebApplication (for Tomcat) using netbeans on Windows 7. For the Webapplication to run I need to run a insall-script once. This script (*.bat for windows and *.sh for linux is included in my war-file (WEB_INF). Now everytime I deploy the WAR-file and want to run the script on linux I have to call chmod +x install.sh first. Is there a way that this script can be made executable by default? I don't want to have to execute some extra commands after the deploy to make the script executable. For clarification: I'm not new to Linux and I know how to set executable-rights on files. That's not the problem. My problem is: What do I have to do, so that this script is executable right after tomcat deployed my *.war-file (unpacked it). If I would be using Linux for development as well, I would try to set the rights according in my sources (maybe I'll try it when I have a little more spare time). But I am using Windows and netbeans. Are there any attributes I can set to achive my goal, or is it possible to achive this using ant? By the way: Are there security related issues with this approach? The script looks for java executable and calls a javabased GUI-installer...

  • What is the best cross-platform language for desktop applications? (Java, Adobe Air, Flex, Silverlight??, Anything Else)

    My business partner needs a desktop application programmed, and it needs to be cross-platform as he wants Mac owners (OS X) to be able to run it as well. This, of course, is a bit of a problem for me as I program in PHP for my web projects and exclusively in C# (formerly used Visual Basic) for my desktop apps. I've been using (and love) NetBeans for my PHP stuff, and love Visual Studio just as much; they're both excellent IDEs. With this in mind, I'd like to find a language and IDE that's as similar to Visual Studio as possible (or at least something that makes development as easy as it does) for my cross-platform application development. In fact, if there is a language I can use with VS I'd be extremely happy. I realize that NetBeans has a Java Desktop App IDE, but have been having problems with it (my question in regards to that issue is here. I am also not sure that I really want to learn and use Java if there is a better, easier option out there. Obviously, the first language that came to mind that I can use cross-platform was Java, but I've also heard of people using Adobe Air, as well as Flex being used. I've never programmed in any of those languages, and as such have no frame of reference from which I can decide which would be best for me. I'm also not sure what other options there may be for me; perhaps there's another language I can use that'd be better than the three options I've already provided. (Can you make desktop apps with Silverlight? If so, did MS make an interpreter that will get them to work on OS X?) I like the syntax of C# quite a bit, and the Visual Studio IDE makes it extremely easy to make my apps with. As such, I'd like to find something that'll work as well for me with the cross-platform shatner as C# and its IDE does with my Windows apps. Thanks in advance for your help/opinions!

  • I need an IDE for typo3 core development in php

    Php in itself is difficult for IDEs because of the dynamic nature of the language. My current development environment is mostly netbeans against a local svn copy of the codebase setup in a local development webserver. The code is full text indexed by vistas search engine for almost instant searches. I do a lot of development directly against the main development server using a combination of tools. Putty to interact with the server and deploy by updating an svn checkout on the development server. Tortoise SVN locally to have a fairly rich SVN experience. Netbeans obviously have SVN integration. Most of the changes on the remote server is commited using the putty session. WinSCP to interact with the development server with norton commander like interface as well as the good putty integration. Finally my text editor for remote editing is notepad++ out of habit and because of some nice features and good price. What I'm really missing is good php editing. Because of the way typo3 works almost all objects are instanciated through make instance abstraction that either returns the base class or the customized class if the framework has been extended. I'm not looking for a magic editing package and would like to find an editor which can use annotations to specify the type of commonly used variables.

  • Glassfish: Storing Java classes in the docroot folder?

    I'm very new to using Glassfish or JSP. I have this working in NetBeans (which has Glassfish bundled) but when I try to put it on my server which is running Glassfish Server, I really don't know what I'm doing. I can place a JSP file in "domains/domain1/docroot/index.jsp" and it will work when I visit my site, but I can't, for some reason, get Java classes to work. I copied the files in "/build/web/" from the NetBeans project to the docroot folder on my server. The errors I get when I visit the site are: org.apache.jasper.JasperException: PWC6033: Error in Javac compilation for JSP PWC6199: Generated servlet error: string:///index_jsp.java:7: package test does not exist PWC6197: An error occurred at line: 5 in the jsp file: /index.jsp PWC6199: Generated servlet error: string:///index_jsp.java:52: cannot find symbol symbol : class TestClass location: class org.apache.jsp.index_jsp PWC6197: An error occurred at line: 5 in the jsp file: /index.jsp PWC6199: Generated servlet error: string:///index_jsp.java:52: cannot find symbol symbol : class TestClass location: class org.apache.jsp.index_jsp The actual Java class is in "WEB-INF/classes/test/TestClass.class" (it is pre-compiled).
