• Visual Artifacts in Visual Studio 2010

  I'm using VS 2010 on Windows Server 2003, running on a Dell Inspiron 9400 laptop. VS 2010 runs fine, except for persistent and random screen re-drawing issues. Samples of these are here. These artifacts occur as the mouse moves over items that highlight on a mouse-over event, while scrolling, and when switching tabs. VS 2008 has non of these issues, so I assume that it is related to VS 2010's use of WPF. Could it be that my video card or driver is not up to the task of rendering WPF? Some other WPF applications (not Silverlight) also have some of these screen repainting problems. I have tried a variety of settings in System Properties--Advanced--Performance Options--Visual Effects, and in the related "Advanced" tab, Processor Scheduling is adjusted for best performance of programs. • Parameterized SQL statements vs. very simple method

  When I started to write the first SQL-Statements in my programs I felt quite comfortable with protecting myself against SQL-Injection with a very simple method that a colleague showed me. It replaced all single quotes with two single quotes. So for example there is a searchfield in which you can enter a customername to search in the customertable. If you would enter Peter's Barbershop The SELECT Statement would look like SELECT * FROM Customers WHERE Customername = 'Peter''s Barbershop' If now an attacker would insert this: ';DROP TABLE FOO; -- The statement would look like: SELECT * FROM Customers WHERE Customername = ''';DROP TABLE FOO;--' It would not drop any table, but search the customertable for the customername ';DROP TABLE FOO;-- which, I suppose, won't be found ;-) Now after a while of writing statements and protecting myself against SQL-Injection with this method, I read that many developers use parameterized statements, but I never read an article where "our" method was used. So definitely there is a good reason for it. What scenarios would parameterized statements cover but our method doesn't? What are the advantages of parameterized statements compared to our method? • Windows and system processes

  Note: I've asked this question in a similiar format on superuser but it seems like it may fit here on SO better. It definitely also is about programming as it concerns parts of the Win32 API, Windows in general and process management. So there are these processes that can't be terminated with taskkill - system processes in general. But there also is, for example my Anti Virus program that makes itself "unterminateable". How can I access and mainly terminate system processes under windows? (kill.exe by Microsoft doesn't work) How do processes like anti-virus programs protect themselves? How can you turn them off again, then?

• MinGW - cross compile tool - latest version?

  At the MinGW download page you can download the "Cross-Hosted MinGW Build Tool" which is a shell script to build the "MinGW cross-compiler" so that you will be able to compile your programs on "Linux" to the "Windows" target. I have downloaded that script, run it and answered the interactive questions the script has asked me. I had to dowload some files from which one has name "gcc-core". And the "latest" version of the "gcc-core source code" I have found on that page, was "gcc-core-3.4.5-20060117-2-src.tar.gz" - so that "3.4.5" version. But on "Ubuntu Linux" I can download the precompiled "mingw32" package which is of the version "4.2.1". How is it possible that the "Ubuntu package" version of MinGW is newer than the one from the MinGW "homepage"? So which is the latest version of the "MinGW cross compile tool"?

• Intel Assembler optimization

  I'm currently trying to optimize the code emitted from a home-made compiler, for a home-made language. I've tried out Intel VTune to see where the bottlenecks are: http://www.imada.sdu.dk/~sorenh07/misc/vtune-assembly-optimization.png I find it very impressive that a "subl"-instruction is responsible for over 38% of the clockticks in a program running for 30-90 seconds! Can anybody give an explanation why? The "optimization report" feature in VTune apparently doesn't exist for programs not compiled with icc. Does there exist a program which suggests optimization for assembler code? (that is, not code coming from a high-level language).

• Returning structs in registers - ARM ABI in GCC

  Hi, In the ARM ABI documentation I come across functions defined like: __value_in_regs struct bar foo(int a, int b) { ... } but GCC(4.3.3) doesn't allow it and all I could find are references to some RealView compiler. Is there any way of doing this from GCC? I have tried -freg-struct-return but it doesn't make a difference. As it is an ABI I can't change the original programs, and returning a regular struct mangles the stack. I would rather not using assembly for this if avoidable as it isn't otherwise necessary. • Ipad, closed environment and threat to privacy

  I had an unusual question about ipad, Since ipad environment is closed and does not allows installation of diagnostic and security related programs. How can then we be sure that any of the software installed on ipad is not infringing upon our privacy by doing stuff such as homing back information, etc. We cant install a packet tracer or any other software to check for attacks on privacy. Also given Apples poor track record (the safari browser was broken in one day), I don't think trusting apple solely would be a good idea. This might not seem to be a big issue but for business users it would be a significant concern.

• HTTP Error 403.1 - Permissions are fixed, what else is wrong?

  I have developed a HTTP Handler Web Service, and have had it successfully deployed, through testing on other environments i've ran into another problem. This is the error message I receive: You have attempted to execute a CGI, ISAPI, or other executable program from a directory that does not allow programs to be executed. HTTP Error 403.1 - Forbidden: Execute access is denied. Internet Information Services (IIS) So it is obvious what needs to be fixed, so: 1) Start Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager. 2) Right-click the Web site that contains the SharePoint Web site that you created, and then click Properties. 3) Click the Home Directory tab. 4) Under Application settings, click either Scripts only in the Execute permissions list or Scripts and Executables in the Execute permissions list (as appropriate to your situation). Click OK. 5) Quit IIS Manager. But I'm still getting the same error. So what else could be wrong?

• Are all languages used within .net Equally performant?

  I know the "Sales pitch" answer is yes to this question, but is it technically true. The Common Language Runtime (CLR) is designed as an intermediate language based on Imperative Programming (IP), but this has obvious implications when dealing with Declarative Programming (DP). So how efficient is a language based on a different paradigm than the Imperative Style when implemented in the CLR? I also get the feeling that the step to DP would incur an extra level of abstraction that might not model at all performant, would this be a fair comment? I have done some simple tests using F# and it all looks great, but am I missing something if the programs get more complex?

• Why exactly is eval evil?

  I know that Lisp and Scheme programmers usually say that eval should be avoided unless strictly necessary. I´ve seen the same recommendation for several programming languages, but I´ve not yet seen a list of clear arguments against the use of eval. Where can I find an account of the potential problems of using eval? For example, I know the problems of GOTO in procedural programming (makes programs unreadable and hard to maintain, makes security problems hard to find, etc), but I´ve never seen the arguments against eval. Interestingly, the same arguments against GOTO should be valid against continuations, but I see that Shemers, for example, won´t say that continuations are "evil" -- you should just be careful when using them. They´re much more likely to frown upon code using eval than upon code using continuations (as far as I can see -- I could be wrong).

• Importing Python module from the Bash

  I am launching a Python script from the command line (Bash) under Linux. I need to open Python, import a module, and then have lines of code interpreted. The console must then remain in Python (not quit it). How do I do that? I have tried an alias like this one: alias program="cd /home/myname/programs/; python; import module; line_of_code" But this only starts python and the commands are not executed (no module import, no line of code treated). What is the proper way of doing this, provided I need to keep Python open (not quit it) after the script is executed? Many thanks.

• Mass-mailing without getting your domain banned

  I plan on sending an email to 10k+ email addresses (mostly gmail and yahoo) to announce the launch of my startup's product. I'm planning on using PHPMailer or PHPList to send out the mails. I've never mass-mailed before and had a few basic questions. I've already browsed through some of the other mass-mail threads on this forum but the questions remain hence a new thread. Are newsletters which are sent by so many other organizations sent out in a similar manner - using programs such as PHPMailer or PHPList? When would a GMail or a Yahoo blacklist my domain name - are there any set parameters - 1000 emails in an hour would result in getting banned or some such parameters? If yes, then what sort of settings should I take note of when sending the emails - any format of the email or spread out the 10+ emails over 2 days etc.? If a Gmail or a Yahoo blacklists your domain name - is there any way to get out of the blacklist?

• Win32 API Programming - Is it worth ?

  Now I code win32 api windows explorer . But it seems quite hard to me.I've a month to do it. But through the time I code, I wonder is it worth that I code win32 api ? . When we can create GUI easily with MFC or even easier with C#. What should I do ? 1- Keep coding with win32 api to deeply understand about them. 2- Just learn and code some programs to understand how they work. • iPhone - Browsing iPhone files through computer

  I want to be able to send files from an iPhone app to a computer. What would be the easiest way of doing this? I've made simple server client programs before, but in those, the client has always needed to connect to the server before being able to receive messages from it. There is an app for the iPhone called iSimulate, where you put a server on a Mac (the iPhone simulator), and then you use the iSimulate app of an iTouch or iPhone to send touch events to the server. This app does not require you to type in an ip-address. Instead it presents a list of available computers that have this server up and running. How exactly is this being done? Can a server broadcast a message over a network, w/o anyone being connected to the server? How does that work? How does a client listen for that broadcast? • WxPython Incompatible With Snow Leopard?

  Hello all, Recently I upgraded to Snow Leopard, and now I can't run programs built with wxPython. The errors I get are (from Eclipse + PyDev): import wx File "/var/tmp/wxWidgets/wxWidgets-13~231/2.6/DSTROOT/System/Library/Frameworks /Python.framework/Versions/2.6/Extras/lib/ python/wx-2.8-mac-unicode/wx/__init__.py", line 45, in <module> File "/var/tmp/wxWidgets/wxWidgets-13~231/2.6/DSTROOT /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/Extras/lib /python/wx-2.8-mac-unicode/wx/_core.py", line 4, in <module> ImportError:/System/Library/Frameworks /Python.framework/Versions/2.6/Extras/lib/python /wx-2.8-mac-unicode/wx/_core_.so: no appropriate 64-bit architecture (see "man python" for running in 32-bit mode) I don't really understand them and would appreciate if you could help me to do so, also, if you do know what's going on, how can I go about fixing them? Maybe this has something to do with the fact that Snow Leopard is 64-bit? Thanks!!

  Hello. Unfortunately, (written) midterms are necessary in most university CS programs in the world. They tell us how well our students (and ourselves as teachers) are doing. Needless to say, designing midterms for a C Programming Language course is not easy. For instance, when we do program for real, we have a myriad of information at our disposal: websites, books, cheat sheets to "remember" the syntax and so on. My question is this: did you find any way, during your years at school or training, where you said: ok, this midterm evaluation of my programming skills is tough, but fair. For instance: I found "find 5 problems with this code"-type questions hard but interesting and telling. Are there any others? Thanks.

• in-memory database in Python

  I'm doing some queries in Python on a large database to get some stats out of the database. I want these stats to be in-memory so other programs can use them without going to a database. I was thinking of how to structure them, and after trying to set up some complicated nested dictionaries, I realized that a good representation would be an SQL table. I don't want to store the data back into the persistent database, though. Are there any in-memory implementations of an SQL database that supports querying the data with SQL syntax?

• PHP Menu Question

  As one of the steps toward a greater website redesign I am putting the majority of the content of our website into html files to be used as includes. I am intending on passing a variable to the PHP template page through the URL to call the proper include. Our website has many programs that each need an index page as well as about 5 sub-pages. These program pages will need a menu system to navigate between the different pages.I am naming the pages pagex_1, pagex_2, pagex_3, etc. where "pagex" is descriptive of the page content. My question is, what would be the best way to handle this menu system? Is there a way to modify the initial variable used to arrive at the index page to create links in the menu to arrive at the other pages? Thanks for any help!

• C# app fails to load Matlab DLL when running from a shared drive?

  I have a C# .NET 2.0 program that calls a Matlab .dll file that I created using Matlab Builder for .NET. This Matlab .dll file is a wrapper for a m file function that I need to call from my C# program. Everything works fine when I run this app from my local drive. However once I copy the app to a shared drive the Matlab dll fails when it's first loaded. I setup caspol to allow .NET programs to run from shared drives. Does anyone know what could cause this problem or a tool that I could use to easily figure out what the problem is? Thanks.

Instead of writing a web-based interface, I thought it would be good to use a python based web dashboard that could render the results in various business user and manager friendly formats. • Next step for Python app using Sqlite db

  I want to write a db program in Python using Sqlite. I have the db table structure planned, and am ready to move to the next step, which I think is to work any bugs out of the db structure. I am totally inexperienced in development except for writing the original db (written in MS Access), and an Intro to C++ class (OOP concepts and console C++ programs). • What's the best self-tracking software for Linux?

  I'm looking for a way to track myself and receive quality data upon which I can write future scripts/programs. For example, I use Google Reader a lot. I'd like to track the hrefs that garner my clicks. Further, I'd like to drop all of the words of each href into a database where they can be stacked in a hierarchical manner. At the end of the week I want to know that "Ubuntu" garnered 448 clicks and "Cheetos" garnered 2. :) That's just one example... I'd like this tracking and data-collecting to extend beyond my browser. • How can I compile a Perl script inside a running Perl session?

  I have a Perl script that takes user input and creates another script that will be run at a later date. I'm currently going through and writing tests for these scripts and one of the tests that I would like to perform is checking if the generated script compiles successfully (e.g. perl -c <script>.) Is there a way that I can have Perl perform a compile on the generated script without having to spawn another Perl process? I've tried searching for answers, but searches just turn up information about compiling Perl scripts into executable programs.
