  • do I need to close an audio Clip?

    have an application that processes real-time data and is supposed to beep when a certain event occurs. The triggering event can occur multiple times per second, and if the beep is already playing when another event triggers the code is just supposed to ignore it (as opposed to interrupting the current beep and starting a new one). Here is the basic code: Clip clickClip public void prepareProcess() { super.prepareProcess(); clickClip = null; try { clipFile = new File("C:/WINDOWS/Media/CHIMES.wav"); ais = AudioSystem.getAudioInputStream(clipFile); clickClip = AudioSystem.getClip(); clickClip.open(ais); fileIsLoaded = true; } catch (Exception ex) { clickClip = null; fileIsLoaded = false; } } public void playSound() { if (fileIsLoaded) { if ((clickClip==null) || (!clickClip.isRunning())) { try { clickClip.setFramePosition(0); clickClip.start(); } catch (Exception ex) { System.out.println("Cannot play click noise"); ex.printStackTrace(); } } } The prepareProcess method gets run once in the beginning, and the playSound method is called every time a triggering event occurs. My question is: do I need to close the clickClip object? I know I could add an actionListener to monitor for a Stop event, but since the event occurs so frequently I'm worried the extra processing is going to slow down the real-time data collection. The code seems to run fine, but my worry is memory leaks. The code above is based on an example I found while searching the net, but the example used an actionListener to close the Clip specifically "to eliminate memory leaks that would occur when the stop method wasn't implemented". My program is intended to run for hours so any memory leaks I have will cause problems. I'll be honest: I have no idea how to verify whether or not I've got a problem. I'm using Netbeans, and running the memory profiler just gave me a huge list of things that I don't know how to read. This is supposed to be the simple part of the program, and I'm spending hours on it. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Michael

  • How can I debug a Windows service that crashes?

    I have a .NET Windows service that appears to be crashing due to C00000005 (access violation--according to Dr Watson). When I attach the VS debugger to it--whether I build it with or without symbols--the VS debugger just stops when the service crashes, instead of stopping to give me a chance to do any investigation. Is that to be expected, or am I doing something wrong? Will using WinDbg let me do something more in real time (obviously, WinDbg lets me do crash dump analysis)? Thanks!

  • Ruby on Rails: Accessing production database data for testing

    With Ruby on Rails, is there a way for me to dump my production database into a form that the test part of Rails can access? I'm thinking either a way to turn the production database into fixtures, or else a way to migrate data from the production database into the test database that will not get routinely cleared out by Rails. I'd like to use this data for a variety of tests, but foremost in my mind is using real data with the performance tests, so that I can get a realistic understanding of load times.

    I'm trying to use GData to retrieve the email address, real name, and profile URL of the user that just authorized my site using Google OAuth. We know how to request it using Google's OpenID flow, but the OpenID flow has the severe limitation that we have to ask for a Google Apps user's domain before we know where to send them to log in. At least using OAuth (or even AuthSub), the user gets prompted for which of their Google accounts to log in.

    Hello, I have written a COM object that in turn uses a thrid party ActiveX control. In my FinalConstruct() for my COM object, I instantiate the ActiveX control with the follow code: HRESULT hRes; LPCLASSFACTORY2 pClassFactory; hRes = CoInitializeEx(NULL,COINIT_APARTMENTTHREADED); bool bTest = SUCCEEDED(hRes); if (!bTest) return E_FAIL; if (SUCCEEDED(CoGetClassObject(__uuidof(SerialPortSniffer), CLSCTX_INPROC_SERVER, NULL, IID_IClassFactory2, (LPVOID *)(&pClassFactory)))) { ... more set up code When I step over the line if (SUCCEEDED(CoGetClassObject(__uuidof(SerialPortSniffer), ..., I get 20+ lines in the Output window stating: First-chance exception at 0x0523f82e in SillyComDriver.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation writing location 0x00000000. I also get the lines: First-chance exception at 0x051e3f3d in SillyComDriver.exe: 0xC0000096: Privileged instruction. First-chance exception at 0x100ab9e6 in SillyComDriver.exe: 0xC000001D: Illegal Instruction. Notice these are first-chance exceptions. The program runs as expected I can access the third party methods/properties. Still, I'm left wondering why they are occurring. Perhaps my way of instantiating the ActiveX control (for which I want use of it's methods/properties and not it's GUI stuff) is incorrect? Besides the code I'm showing, I also put the line import "spsax.dll" no_namespace in the stdafx.h That's all the code necessary for my simple demo project. I noticed this problem because I had (inadvertently) set the "break on exceptions" options in my "real" project and it was breaking on this line. Once I removed it, it also works. If you're read this far thank you, and perhaps I can ask one other minor question. In my demo project, if I right click on SerialPortSniffer and "go to definition", it takes me to the file C:....\AppData\Local\Temp\spsax.tlh. Can someone explain that? Finally, in my "real" project, right clicking on SerialPortSniffer and going to difinition leads to "The symbol 'SerialPortSniffer' is not defined". It doesn't seem to affect the program though. Is there some setting I've messed up? By the way, all my code is written w/ VS2008. Thanks, Dave

    I'm looking to find a way to in real-time find the shortest path between nodes in a huge graph. It has hundreds of thousands of vertices and millions of edges. I know this question has been asked before and I guess the answer is to use a breadth-first search, but I'm more interested in to know what software you can use to implement it. For example, it would be totally perfect if it already exist a library (with python bindings!) for performing bfs in undirected graphs.

    Is it possible somehow using mod_rewrite change the url from http://www.mywebsite.com/company/123/reviews to http://www.mywebsite.com/company-123/reivews? It's not a redirect. The problem is that the real path is the first one and I need my browser to display the second path. So when the user goes to company-123/reviews the content of the page is displayed from company/123/reviews. Thank you.

I have a sequence with 15 slots like this (The digits may vary from 0 to 20) : 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 (And there are in total 10 different sequences of this type) Each sequence needs to expand into an array, where each slot can take 1 position. 1 1 0 0 1 1 1 0 0 0 1 1 1 0 0 1 1 0 0 1 1 1 0 0 0 1 1 1 0 0 0 0 1 1 0 0 0 1 1 1 0 0 0 1 1 0 0 1 1 0 0 0 1 1 1 0 0 0 1 1 The constraints on the matrix is that: [row-wise, i.e. horizontally] The number of ones placed, must either be 11 or 111 [row-wise] The distance between two sequences of 1 needs to be a minimum of 00 The sum of each column should match the original array. The number of rows in the matrix should be optimized. The array then needs to allocate one of 4 different matrixes, which may have different number of rows: A, B, C, D A, B, C and D are real-world departments. The load needs to be placed reasonably fair during the course of a 10-day period, not to interfere with other department goals. Each of the matrix is compared with expansion of 10 different original sequences so you have: A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, A9, A10 B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, B6, B7, B8, B9, B10 C1, C2, C3, C4, C5, C6, C7, C8, C9, C10 D1, D2, D3, D4, D5, D6, D7, D8, D9, D10 Certain spots on these may be reserved (Not sure if I should make it just reserved/not reserved or function-based). The reserved spots might be meetings and other events The sum of each row (for instance all the A's) should be approximately the same within 2%. i.e. sum(A1 through A10) should be approximately the same as (B1 through B10) etc. The number of rows can vary, so you have for instance: A1: 5 rows A2: 5 rows A3: 1 row, where that single row could for instance be: 0 0 1 1 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 etc.. Sub problem* I'de be very happy to solve only part of the problem. For instance being able to input: 1 1 2 3 4 2 2 3 4 2 2 3 3 2 3 And get an appropriate array of sequences with 1's and 0's minimized on the number of rows following th constraints above.

  • SQL Server 2005 red herring error "The user does not have permission to perform this action"

    We're getting the error "The user does not have permission to perform this action" during times of heavy load (regularly, when a trim job occurs). The error clears up when the service accessing sql server is restarted, so it's obviously not a real permissions problems. What kind of situations could cause an error like this, when it's not really a permissions problem? Any ideas of good places to start looking? thanks for any insights...
