• Who could ask for more with LESS CSS? (Part 1 of 3–Features)

- by ToStringTheory
It wasn’t very long ago that I first began to get into CSS precompilers such as SASS (Syntactically Awesome Stylesheets) and LESS (The Dynamic Stylesheet Language) and I had been hooked on the idea since. When I finally had a new project come up, I leapt at the opportunity to try out one of these languages. Introduction To be honest, I was hesitant at first to add either framework as I didn’t really know much more than what I had read on their homepages, and I didn’t like the idea of adding too much complexity to a project - I couldn’t guarantee I would be the only person to support it in the future. Thankfully, both of these languages just add things into CSS. You don’t HAVE to know LESS or SASS to do anything, you can still do your old school CSS, and your output will be the same. However, when you want to start doing more advanced things such as variables, mixins, and color functions, the functionality is all there for you to utilize. From what I had read, SASS has a few more features than LESS, which is why I initially tried to figure out how to incorporate it into a MVC 4 project. However, through my research, I couldn’t find a way to accomplish this without including some bit of the Ruby on Rails framework on the computer running it, and I hated the fact that I had to do that. Besides SASS, there is little chance of me getting into the RoR framework, at least in the next couple years. So in the end, I settled with using LESS. Features So, what can LESS (or SASS) do for you? There are several reasons I have come to love it in the past few weeks. 1 – Constants Using LESS, you can finally declare a constant and use its value across an entire CSS file. The case that most people would be familiar with is colors. Wanting to declare one or two color variables that comprise the theme of the site, and not have to retype out their specific hex code each time, but rather a variable name. What’s great about this is that if you end up having to change it, you only have to change it in one place. An important thing to note is that you aren’t limited to creating constants just for colors, but for strings and measurements as well. 2 – Inheritance This is a cool feature in my mind for simplicity and organization. Both LESS and SASS allow you to place selectors within other selectors, and when it is compiled, the languages will break the rules out as necessary and keep the inheritance chain you created in the selectors. Example LESS Code: #header { h1 { font-size: 26px; font-weight: bold; } p { font-size: 12px; a { text-decoration: none; &:hover { border-width: 1px } } } } Example Compiled CSS: #header h1 { font-size: 26px; font-weight: bold; } #header p { font-size: 12px; } #header p a { text-decoration: none; } #header p a:hover { border-width: 1px; } 3 - Mixins Mixins are where languages like this really shine. The ability to mixin other definitions setup a parametric mixin. There is really a lot of content in this area, so I would suggest looking at http://lesscss.org for more information. One of the things I would suggest if you do begin to use LESS is to also grab the mixins.less file from the Twitter Bootstrap project. This file already has a bunch of predefined mixins for things like border-radius with all of the browser specific prefixes. This alone is of great use! 4 – Color Functions This is the last thing I wanted to point out as my final post in this series will be utilizing these functions in a more drawn out manner. Both LESS and SASS provide functions for getting information from a color (R,G,B,H,S,L). Using these, it is easy to define a primary color, and then darken or lighten it a little for your needs. Example: Example LESS Code: @base-color: #111; @red: #842210; #footer { color: (@base-color + #003300); border-left: 2px; border-right: 2px; border-color: desaturate(@red, 10%); } Example Compiled CSS: #footer { color: #114411; border-left: 2px; border-right: 2px; border-color: #7d2717; } I have found that these can be very useful and powerful when constructing a site theme. Conclusion I came across LESS and SASS when looking for the best way to implement some type of CSS variables for colors, because I hated having to do a Find and Replace in all of the files using the colors, and in some instances, you couldn’t just find/replace because of the color choices interfering with other colors (color to replace of #000, yet come colors existed like #0002bc). So in many cases I would end up having to do a Find and manually check each one. In my next post, I am going to cover how I’ve come to set up these items and the structure for the items in the project, as well as the conventions that I have come to start using. In the final post in the series, I will cover a neat little side project I built in LESS dealing with colors!

• Application versioning

- by Mathew
Haven't find similar issue so sorry if thats a duplicate. I'm about to start a migration of an already existing project from one web container version to the another. Currently, the application version is 2.2.5. Business requirement is to deliver a 3.0 version by the end of the year. Additional constraint is to release a working, stable version by the end of Q3. We are about to work in 2-weeks sprints and I'm wondering how can I approach the problem? I was thinking about releasing 2.3 by the end of Q2, then immediately promoting it as 3.0-a1, work on alphas (3.0-a2, 3.0-a3, ...) till the end of Q3, to start with 3.0-b1 in the early Q4 and finally release 3.0 around December. I don't feel comfortable saying that the application is already in 3.0 state in July, but I can't see other options. If you find some book chapters/blogs or your personal experience interesting please share your opinion.

Has anyone seen anything like this?

• Tagging Objects in the AppFabric Cache

In two of my previous entries I outlined functionality and patterns used in the AppFabric Cache. In this entry I wanted to expand and look at another area of functionality that people have come to expect when working with cache technology. This expectation is the ability to tag content with more information than just the key. As you start to examine this expectation you will soon find yourself asking if the tagged data can be related to each other and finally if it is possible...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Invoking JavaScript from Java

- by Geertjan
Here's an Action class defined in Java. The Action class executes a script via the JavaFX WebEngine: @NbBundle.Messages("CTL_AddBananasAction=Add Banana") private class AddBananasAction extends AbstractAction { public AddBananasAction() { super(Bundle.CTL_AddBananasAction()); } @Override public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { Platform.runLater(new Runnable() { @Override public void run() { webengine.executeScript("addBanana(' " + newBanana + " ') "); } }); } }How does the 'executescript' call know where to find the JavaScript file? Well, earlier in the code, the WebEngine loaded an HTML file, where the JavaScript file was registered: WebView view = new WebView(); view.setMinSize(widthDouble, heightDouble); view.setPrefSize(widthDouble, heightDouble); webengine = view.getEngine(); URL url = getClass().getResource("home.html"); webengine.load(url.toExternalForm()); Finally, here's a skeleton 'addBanana' method, which is invoked via the Action class shown above: function addBanana(user){ statustext.text(user); } By the way, if you have your JavaScript and CSS embedded within your HTML file, the code navigator combines all three into the same window, which is kind of cool:

• Lock screen elements frozen on desktop

- by user286968
I have finally made the switch from Windows to Ubuntu and now have to ask the first question because search did not help me this time. (Please help me in a newb-friendly way) The problem is easily described: The elements shown in the lockscreen on boot (ubuntu logo in the middle and watermark in bottom left corner) stay there even when I'm entering desktop. How can I remove them again? They haven't been there in the first place, but after updating Ubuntu with Update Center, the problem occured. As I cant post an image here with my reputation, pls see this link: http://s30.postimg.org/age8fraww/Screenshot_from_2014_05_30_23_27_58.jpg Thanks for your help and time. Kind regards

• Structuring an input file

- by Ricardo
I am in the process of structuring a small program to perform some hydraulic analysis of pipe flow. As I am envisioning this, the program will read an input file, store the input parameters in a suitable way, operate on them and finally output results. I am struggling with how to structure the input file in a sane way; that is, in a way that a human can write it easily and a machine can parse it easily. A sample input file made available to me for a similar program is just a stream of comma-separated numbers that don't make much sense on their own, so that's the scenario I am trying to avoid. Though I am giving the details of my particular problem, I am more interested in general input-file structuring strategies. Is a stream of comma-separated values my best bet? Would I be better off using some sort of key:value structure? I don't know much about this, so any help will probably put me in a better track than I am now.

• Menus don't sync in the first place

- by Bruce Mincks
I have been wrestling with prompts about my default key ring for months, finally made contact with Ubuntu with the right password, and find that when I try to sync evolution Ubuntu directs me to "system-preferences- " and then the road forks between the "passwords and encryption" you indicate and the "encryption and keyrings. I have no idea which version I am using, at this point. The road goes downhill from there. I would really like to synch my windows manager and Inkscape vs. ImageMagick display (circles display as semicircles). Can someone set me straight?

• Collapsible menu and amount of links in a web page

- by dstonek
One of my pages contain three levels of a collapsible menu (JS + CSS from mycssmenu.com). There are a dozen first level items displayed to users, each one with various second level items, and finally a lot of third level items, each one containing a related link. This generates a lot of internal links (300+). Because of SEO should I change the way the collapsible menu is displayed to reduce link amount? What do you suggest? I would like to avoid users to have to open a new page just to only see what are third level items and eventually follow one of its links.

• USB key will only be mounted by gparted [?]

- by user2413
Hi, When I insert by usb key nothing happens (i.e. the drive is not visible). I can mount the USB drive from gparted though (and then it's suddenly recognized). It's not particular to any USB key. This only happens on my laptop (on the desktop the same key will be mounted upon plugging it in without any problems). Finally, the key is formated as fat32 and dosfstools and mtools are installed (through gparted claims otherwise). what's the catch? EDIT Also, gparted offers me the option to mount the key on "/" : shouldn't that be "/media" (or has this changed ?)

• Dual boot: Linux Grub loader does not show windows

- by user292099
my computer previously only had windows installed on it. Recently I decided to try Linux and opted for a dual boot so I installed Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon 64-bit on a separate hard drive within my computer. After installation my computer would directly boot to Linux upon start up and did not even show a grub screen. Using the boot-repair I was finally able to make the Grub loader show a boot list upon start up, but the Windows partition is not there. The boot-info summary is found on this link. http://paste2.org/9pIGZtDv Any help would be great Motherboard: Gigabyte z77 ud5h OS: Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon 64-bit & Windows 8.1 64-bit

• Hello Again, San Francisco

- by Geertjan
From the moment I got to the airport in Amsterdam, I've been bumping into JavaOne pilgrims today. Finally got to my hotel, after a pretty good flight (and KLM provides great meals, which helps a lot), and a rather long wait at customs (serves me right for getting seat 66C in a plane with 68 rows). And, best of all, on Twitter I've been seeing a few remarks around the Duke's Choice Awards for this year. The references all point to the September - October issue of the Java Magazine, where page 24 shows the following: So, from page 24 onwards, you can read all about the above applications. What's especially cool is that three of the above are applications created on top of the NetBeans Platform! That's AgroSense (farm management software), MICE (NATO system for defense and battle-space operations), and Level One Registration Tool (UN Refugee Agency sofware for managing refugees). Congratulations to all the winners, looking forward to learning more about them all during the coming days here at the conference.

• Error downloading novacom drivers – WebOS

- by Ken
I got sick of the Bing Maps on WebOS not being able to find “coffee” when I’m in St. Paul. Coffe Pk, TX anyone? – no thanks. So I finally got around to installing PreWare on my Palm Pre 2. The WebOS Quick Install doesn’t successfully download the novacom drivers. You can find them here: http://downloads.help.palm.com/opensource/novacom/novacom-win-32.tgz http://downloads.help.palm.com/opensource/novacom/novacom-win-64-tgz Don’t bother trying the Novacom Universal Installer either. Then put phone in developer mode (by Typing webos20090606 and switch on developer mode), attach phone in “Just Charge” mode, run WebOS Quick Install, select the globe icon, and search for PreWare, install.

• Why CoffeeScript is an issue

- by Renso
Other than some obvious concerns, my main concern is support in the open source community. "anon" from the CoffeeScript team sent this to me after I requested input from the team to concerns I raised and wanted to get others' take on it:"Thanks for confirming that only idiots willingly program in Java and C#"or the following from the same person:"Oh and finally, you should definitely create jShort. Even though I know you will fail before you even start, I would love to laugh at your attempts and it would be perfect for you since you ride the short bus. "This kind of comment reflects badly on the CoffeeScript team and hence not an option for us as a company to consider. Another example of why some open-source community projects get no traction.

• What amount of PHP memory usage is reasonable for multiple WordPress sites? [closed]

- by John
It seems like I've been plagued with memory usage issues most of the time I've been blogging (7 years). I upgraded my hosting to a HostGator VPS and still seem to have issues. I have about a dozen WP 3.4.2 sites running within a single account. Each has a separate installation. I finally installed TPC! Memory Usage within one of my WP installs to see what was going on. The memory usage just standing still is on the order of 40 MB. This seems high, but I don't know. What would be a reasonable memory usage for these WP installs? Do I need to take other things into account, or am I even looking at it the right way?

• how to focus the desktop on unity

- by user25119
I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 (unity 4.24.0) and I can't seem to focus the desktop. For example, if I press Mod4+D, the window I had opened stays focused, but the image is see is my wallpaper. If I minimize all windows one by one, the last window I minimize is still focused when the desktop finally appears. This means I can't add desktop icons, nor use the mouse in it. I thought about reporting a bug, but everything works fine on other computers with the latest version of Ubuntu I've used, so I'm wondering about what's happening. Before, when I pressed Mod4+D, the Unity Top Menu would say "Desktop - File Edit ..." and I could use the desktop properly. Thanks in advance!

• Reliable method for google analytics tracking for print advertising campaign?

- by chrisjlee
A client is looking to track advertising clicks through a newspaper ad to measure success. They have rigid business requirements that it will be a unique domain... e.g. foowidgetsnews.net instead of foodwidgets.com/contact-form-page.php What is the most reliable method of building redirected url to a landing page so it will be tracked in google analytics as a direct hit from the newspaper? Finally, we would like to track the foowidgetsnews.net as the main url in google analytics because 301 redirect isn't tracked in google analytics like the way we would like it to.

- by ubuntufan
I installed Ubuntu 12.04 on a Presario R 3000. The Wireless card was not detected (firmware missing). Based on several related posts, I downloaded and installed the b43 driver and wireless was finally enabled. However, I am unable to connect to my base station successfully. The base station is configured for WEP 128-bit. I tried both infrastructure mode and ad-hoc mode (with the channel, band, etc. configured). Appreciate any help in trying to get past this.

• installing 12.04 failing

- by Steve
I just downloaded 12.04 burned it to a cd, and booted to into it on my last built computer. It loads a purple screen, then goes to a dos looking screen with a blinking cursor then loads the ubuntu loader. The lights go from red to white and finally they all turn red. This is when the entire screen goes to noise and just hangs. Seems like a hardware issue but I can successfully boot into a non genuine windows7 that I'm looking to replace. I'm not sure what to try, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

• Shutdown issues on my Dell XPS M1530

- by CppLearner
On my Dell XPS M1530 lapttop, I am facing issues with shut-down option after upgrading to 12.04 LTS from 11.10. Sometimes it shutdowns "cleanly". But other times everything goes down but I can still see the power LED glowing (even after removing the power cord). If I keep it like that laptop temperature increases. So finally I opt for "hard shut-down" (i.e. pressing the power button on). Any thoughts what is happening here?. Edit: I just found this link to already reported bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/987933
