• Website settings for running visual web as root?

  Scott Gu explains how to run visual web developer using a root path, here: http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2006/12/19/tip-trick-how-to-run-a-root-site-with-the-local-web-server-using-vs-2005-sp1.aspx This worked exactly as he described in one instance for me. But, today I do not see this option. More over, I do not think I have a solution file, and I think that has something to do with it. I'm aware there are web application projects and web site model, and web site model is basically just a "directory". But can web site model, also, have a solution file for this setting or not a solution file? What determines that? I am interested in using this method on on a web site, i.e directory only model.

  Greetings Guys.. Iam 32 years old, I graduated from university in 2005 but from that time I didnt work in my career as a developer,and I dont have any experience in that major. My current career is software testing, but actually iam not satisfied in that job since i dont see any future for it and i dont know its path (to where will I arrive). Now i decided to take extra cources in VB.net, asp.net since I want to change my career to become webdeveloper. • Problem with connection to MS SQL Server database using SSMS

  I have a database on line with Godaddy (who uses SQL Server 2005). They provide basic management tools, but tell you that for more advanced tools you can connect directly using SSMS. I followed their instructions to ensure my online database will accept remote connections, and can apparently log in using SSMS with success (after giving my hostname and access data). However: When attempting to expand the "Databases" folder tree, I get the following error: Failed to retrieve data for this request. • SSIS FTP Task problem with UNIX server

  Hi, I would like to ask if there's a known issue with the FTP Task of SSIS 2005 on UNIX servers(HP UX B.11.23.). As per checking, we were able to ftp files on Windows Server but not on Unix. Though I can browse the ftp path of the UNIX server from my windows exlporer. I can even manually copy files. But when I tried uploading file thru SSIS FTP task, it does'nt work. Please help. • SQL Server, Remote Stored Procedure, and DTC Transactions

  Our organization has a lot of its essential data in a mainframe Adabas database. We have ODBC access to this data and from C# have queried/updated it successfully using ODBC/Natural "stored procedures". What we'd like to be able to do now is to query a mainframe table from within SQL Server 2005 stored procs, dump the results into a table variable, massage it, and join the result with native SQL data as a result set. The execution of the Natural proc from SQL works fine when we're just selecting it; however, when we insert the result into a table variable SQL seems to be starting a distributed transaction that in turn seems to be wreaking havoc with our connections. Given that we're not performing updates, is it possible to turn off this DTC-escalation behavior? Any tips on getting DTC set up properly to talk to DataDirect's (formerly Neon Systems) Shadow ODBC driver?

• What could cause "Connection Interrupted" on LocalHost when debugging in ASP.NET

  I'm trying to run a freshly created ASP.NET Website using C#, however when I do so it launches FireFox and attempts to connect to http://localhost:1295/WebSite1/Default.aspx (for example), but after about 10-15 seconds it displays a "Connection Interrupted - The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading." Error. This issue is also present with older ASP.NET C# pages/Web Services I've built in the past, nothing is actually running off the ASP.NET Development server. I am using: Windows XP Pro SP2, Visual Studio 2008 For reference I have SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition installed as well. I have tried: Browsing it with IE instead of Mozilla Trying 2.0 framework instead of 3.5 Reinstalling Visual Studio 2008 This problem seems so trivial the more I think about it, but I havn't been able to work it out just yet! Appreciate any help on the matter.

• SQL Server Efficiently dropping a group of rows with millions and millions of rows

  I recently asked this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2519183/ms-sql-share-identity-seed-amongst-tables (Many people wondered why) I have the following layout of a table: Table: Stars starId bigint categoryId bigint starname varchar(200) But my problem is that I have millions and millions of rows. So when I want to delete stars from the table Stars it is too intense on SQL Server. I cannot use built in partitioning for 2005+ because I do not have an enterprise license. When I do delete though, I always delete a whole category Id at a time. I thought of doing a design like this: Table: Star_1 starId bigint CategoryId bigint constaint rock=1 starname varchar(200) Table: Star_2 starId bigint CategoryId bigint constaint rock=2 starname varchar(200) In this way I can delete a whole category and hence millions of rows in O(1) by doing a simple drop table. My question is, is it a problem to have hundreds of thousands of tables in your SQL Server? The drop in O(1) is extremely desirable to me. Maybe there's a completely different solution I'm not thinking of?

  I have a list of counties in each state that received nonattainment status in years 1995-2005. I want to know how many counties in each state each year that received this status. If my data is formatted like this, State1 Country1 YR1 Yr2 Yr3 Yr4... State1 Country2 YR1 Yr2 Yr3 Yr4 State2 County1 Yr1 Yr2..... Each year variable could have a 1 or a zero, since a county may gain or loose this status in a time period. I need to count each year how many counties in each state have nonattainment status (YRx=1), but can't think of how to do it.

• SQL Server 2008 - cannot register default instance MSSQLSERVER

  Hello, I have installed SQL Server 2008 Developer on Windows 7 64 bit. In Management Studio I cannot register the default instance MSSQLSERVER, it cannot find it although the service is running. I get the message: Cannot connect to PHOENIX\MSSQLSERVER. A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 25 - Connection string is not valid) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 87) However Management Studio does show the SQL Server 2005 Express instance (that was installed with VS 2008 Pro) which appeared as already registered. I an using Windows Authentication as I installed it in mixed mode. Any ideas would be appreciated, many thanks paul

• Entity Framework with File-Based Database

  I am in the process of developing a desktop application that needs a database. The application is currently targeted to SQL Express 2005 and works wonderfully. However, I'm not crazy about having this dependency on SQL Express and would prefer to use a small file-based database. My problem is that I am using Entity Framework. I have tried both SQL Compact and SQLite, and they both have bizarre problems with EF v1. I get errors creating the Model, invalid models when it does get created... it's a nightmare. I'm about ready to give up and write a data layer and repository in the good-old-school Connection/Command pattern. Not my favorite plan... Is there a lightweight, file-based database out there that plays well with EF? OR Is there a better ORM tool that I should use instead of EF with my lightweight DB?

• Strange problem with VSS: VSS doesn't work after 5 p.m.

  I have a very strange problem with Visual Source Safe. I use VSS as a add-on with VS 2008 in a corporate intranet with 5 other colleagues. My VS stops working after 5 p.m. most of days with complaining can not connect Source Safe. I'm running VS 2008 and VSS 2005 on Vista and no other one in corporate have such a problem. What do you think about its cause? Is there any log for VSS?

• Casting DataTypes with DirectCast, CType, TryCast

  Ever since I moved from VB6 to VB.NET somewhere in 2005, I've been using CType to do casting from one data type to another. I do this because it is simply faster, used to exist in VB6 and I do not know why I have to be using DirectCast if there is apparently no difference between them. I use TryCast once in a while because I understand that sometimes casting can fail. I however cannot get the difference between CType and DirectCast. Can anyone tell me the difference in plain simple English what the difference the two (CType and DirectCast)? Adding examples of where to use what as well would be helpful. Thanks.

  Well here goes a sligtly arwkward question, I have changed job roles from Network Admin to SQL Server DBA thus having to learn SQL server 2005. I am quite self motivated and have learned the basics of Transac and a little about Reporting services. The only thing is I need to set senarios as theres not much coming in at work in the way of SQL tasks. I have always kept my interest in networking by setting little "Hacking tasks", I have has a look at some crackme's but can find nothing to play with. I understand the SQL injection is some sort of SQL hack but found not much on the subject. I know my way of learning might be a bit different from others but it is all White Hat and keeps my interest. Thanks

• How do I prevent a font from extending off the top of a textbox?

  I'm using a barcode font (IDAutomationMC39H) in an SSRS 2005 report I'm developing, and while it renders fine in the preview in BIDS, if I export the results to PDF, print the results, or do any of the above (including preview) in Report Manager, the barcode font is extending off the top of the textbox. The barcode itself is nearly 20px tall, even at only a 12pt size. I've tried changing the CanGrow value for the textbox, but it seems that even with that set off the barcode isn't pushing the bottom edge of the textbox downwards, it's simply extending over the top of the box. I've also tried resizing the textbox to allow it to contain the entire height of the font, but even with the VerticalAlign set to Bottom the barcode still sticks to the top of the textbox and overflows out the top. • Excel data connection - remove header row?

  The excel spreadsheet is connecting to SQL server 2005 using the connection string below: Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Integrated Security=SSPI;Persist Security Info=True;Initial Catalog=XXXXXX;Data Source=XXXXXX;Extended Properties="HDR=No";Use Procedure for Prepare=1;Auto Translate=True;Packet Size=4096;Workstation ID=XXXXXX;Use Encryption for Data=False;Tag with column collation when possible=False It then pulls data from a view into Excel. The business user wants this information without a header row. This will allow her to review then save as a "headless" csv in SAGE file format. I attempted to alter the connection string by adding HDR=No but that hasn't worked. Additionally, I can't delete the header row. Deleting the content replaces the column names with "Column 1" etc. Any ideas appreciated!

• How to build a C++ Dll wrapper that catches all exceptions?

  Like the title says, we’re looking for a way to catch all exceptions from a piece of C++ code, and wrap this in a dll. This way we can shield of the application that uses this dll, from any errors occurring in this dll. However, this does not seem possible with C++ under Windows. Example: void function() { try { std::list<int>::iterator fd_it; fd_it++; } catch(...) {} } The exception that occurs is not caught by the standard C++ try/catch block, nor by any SEH translator function set by _set_se_translator(). Instead, the DLL crashes, and the program that uses the DLL is aborted. We compiled with Visual C++ 2005, with the option /SHa. Does anyone know if it’s possible in C++/Win32 to catch these kind of problems and make a rocksolid DLL wrapper?

  Hi all I have been asked to monitor MSSQL Server (2005 & 2008) and am wondering what are good metrics to look at? I can access WMI counters but am slightly lost as to how much depth is going to be useful. Currently I have on my list: user connections logins per second latch waits per second total latch wait time dead locks per second errors per second Log and data file sizes I am looking to be able to monitor values that will indicate a degradation of performance on the machine or a potential serious issue. To this end I am also wondering at what values some of these things would be considered normal vs problematic? As I reckon it would probably be a really good question to have answered for the general community I thought i'd court some of you DBA experts out there (I am certainly not one of them!) • Add values to standard expressions list in Regular Expression Editor dialog in VS 2008

  Hi. In the "Regular Expression Editor" dialog in VS 2008 ( or 2005 for this matter ) , there is a list of "standard expressions" like : "French phone number" , "French postal code" etc.. And of course there is an option to select a "Custom" and then enter your own regular expression. Well.. I want to add a predefined expressions to that list . Like : "Israeli phone number" . I don't want to enter it every time by selecting a custom value . I want my developers in the team available items for them to choose. Anyone knows how to alter that list ? I've found some question about it on the web - and the answer given is that it's not possible . But that was at 2004. Anyone ?!?! Thanks.

• Compiler doesn't find methods from base class

  I am having a problem with my virtual methods in a derived class. Here are my (simplified) C++ classes. class Base virtual method accept( MyVisitor1* v ) { /*implementation is here*/ }; virtual method accept( MyVisitor2* v ) { /*implementation is here*/ }; virtual method accept( MyVisitor3* v ) { /*implementation is here*/ }; class DerivedClass virtual method accept( MyVisitor2* v ) { /*implementation is here*/ }; The following use causes VS 2005 to give: "error C2664: 'DerivedClass::accept' : cannot convert parameter 1 from 'Visitor1*' to 'Visitor2 *'". DerivedClass c; MyVisitor1 v1; c.accept(v1); I was expecting the compiler to find and call Base::accept(MyVisitor1) for my DerivedClass as well. Obviously this is not working, but I don't understand why. Any ideas? Thanks, Paul

• What can I do about a SQL Server ghost FK constraint?

  I'm having some trouble with a SQL Server 2005 database that seems like it's keeping a ghost constraint around. I've got a script that drops the constraint in question, does some work, and then re-adds the same constraint. Normally, it works fine. Now, however, it can't re-add the constraint because the database says that it already exists, even though the drop worked fine! Here are the queries I'm working with: alter table individual drop constraint INDIVIDUAL_EMP_FK ALTER TABLE INDIVIDUAL ADD CONSTRAINT INDIVIDUAL_EMP_FK FOREIGN KEY (EMPLOYEE_ID) REFERENCES EMPLOYEE After the constraint is dropped, I've made sure that the object really is gone by using the following queries: select object_id('INDIVIDUAL_EMP_FK') select * from sys.foreign_keys where name like 'individual%' Both return no results (or null), but when I try to add the query again, I get: The ALTER TABLE statement conflicted with the FOREIGN KEY constraint "INDIVIDUAL_EMP_FK". Trying to drop it gets me a message that it doesn't exist. Any ideas?

  How do I get a list of all index & index columns in SQL Server 2005+? What I want is to list all user-defined indexes (which means no indexes which support unique constraints & primary keys) with all columns (ordered by how do they apper in index definition) plus as much metadata as possible.
