    - by JamerTheProgrammer
Im thinking about buying a V5-171 with an i3 in it. Im worried about secure boot though. I heard some people cant turn it off and it wont work... Im not shy to open it up and replace the hard drive with Ubuntu preinstalled. Im also worried about the wifi working. I have heard its been dropping out for people quite a bit along with also the trackpad not working. I dont mind replacing the wifi stick (if its even possible?) inside. Is the GPU (HD4000 i think) supported in ubuntu with full video accel? Thanks!

  • XAMPP: Deamon is already running, but it's NOT apache

    - by TedvG
This one is giving me a headache... I have installed XAMPP for Linux 1.7.7 on Ubuntu 12.10. I haven't installed the latest version because of the new security "feature" which makes XAMPP so secure I can't get it running... But that's another story. After it installed and ran ok for a couple of months, I now get the famous "XAMPP: Another web server daemon is already running." error while starting XAMPP. Now I've googled extensively and can rule out the following: There is no other Apache installation, just XAMPP There are no apache or apache 2 services running There are no services running that use port 80 (checked with netstat -an grep -w 80) I have also done a fresh install of xampp 1.7.7, but that gives me the same result. I think I have tried every solution on the first two result-pages of google and am nowhere nearer to a solution. Can anyone give me pointers on how to find the mysterious "Webdeamon" that is already running?

  • Securing Mobile Apps in a Bring Your Own Device World

    - by Naresh Persaud
As more and more business users begin using their personal devices to access corporate information and resources, the number of network access requests has risen dramatically.  Access Management products and strategies that were based on an employee accessing network resources from a single desktop PC were never designed to monitor and manage an employee that is using a desktop and a laptop, a tablet, and a smartphone all from outside the corporate network, and possibly from an unsecured wireless public network. A new approach is needed to manage the types and frequency of mobile app access requests - an integrated Platform Approach to Identity and Access Management that is location and device aware, that can warn you of unusual or high risk access.  A platform that provides standard APIs so you can manage your mobile apps the same way that you manage your enterprise apps. View the slideshow below to see how the Oracle Identity Management platform can help you secure your mobile applications and data in a Bring Your Own Device World. • Gmail address book in Evolution does not work

    - by wouter205
I added my Gmail address book to evolution, but it gives my an error every time, even when choosing "use secure connection" in the address book options. The error is (I translated it on my own): unable to open address book. This is because you entered a wrong URI or the server is unavailable at the moment. Details: cannot open book: source already loaded! Sometimes, when I click the button 'reject error', it does load the address book but when I return to evolution after a while, it gives me the same error and sometimes I cannot load the address book. This is very annoying since I have to use evolution a lot.

  • Internal and external API architecture

    - by Tacomanator
The company I work for maintains a successful SaaS product that grew "organically" over the years. We are planning to expand the line with a suite of new products that will share data with the existing product. To support this, we are looking to consolidate business logic into a single place: a web service layer. The WS layer will be used by: The web applications A tool to import data A tool to integrate with other client software (not an API per se) We also want to create an API that can be used by our customers that are capable of using it to create their own integrations. We are struggling with the following question: Should the internal API (aka the WS layer) and the external API be one in the same, with security and permission settings to control what can be done by who, or should they be two separate applications where the external API just calls the internal API like any other application? So far in our debate it seems that separating them may be more secure, but will add overhead. What have others done in a similar situation?

Watching YouTube videos on the Wii just got a whole lot easier; YouTube’s native Wii app streamlines the process and cuts out the need for the Internet Channel browser. Previous to this release you had to use the $5 Internet Channel and the Opera Browser to access YouTube. It worked but it wasn’t elegant by any means. The new YouTube Wii app sports a clean interface, simple Wiimote-based controls, and all the great YouTube content you can handle. The app is free but currently U.S. only. According to the press release, the app will be rolled out to other countries in the coming months. If you missed the webcast, here is a link to the replay:  webcast replay link. • Free (Or Cheap) Alternatives For An SSL Certificate For Facebook Apps

    - by mickburkejnr
In October (from what I remember) Facebook will require HTTPS connections to pages and app's that are hosted away from Facebook. At the moment, it comes up with a popup saying "do you want to turn secure browsing off". I think (as far as I know) that once October comes people won't be able to access these pages any more. Now, I know you have to pay for good SSL certificates. However, for a lot of clients this is just going to be a Facebook page, and not mission critical to their businesses. With this in mind, they may not want to pay for an SSL certificate. I was wondering if there are any free SSL certificates that could do the job? Even if there are no free ones, are there any cheap alternatives? Also, if you do use a free certificate, will it still work in the same way as a paid for certificate?

  • Could someone help me understand SQL TDE Database encryption?

    - by SLC
I don't quite follow how it works. According to the MSDN Article there is a big hierarchy of keys protecting other keys and passwords. At some point the database is encrypted. You query the database which is encrypted, and it works seamlessly. If you're able to simply connect to the database as normal and not have to worry about any of the encryption from a developer point of view, how exactly is it secure? Surely anyone can simply connect and do select * from x and the data is revealed. Sorry my question is a bit scattered, I am just very confused by the article.

  • As an IT contractor, is it better to be a specialist or a jack-of-all-trades? [on hold]

    - by alimac83
I've just entered the contracting market as a web developer and I've having a tough time figuring out how to plan for the future. Several developers I've worked with in the past have told me to become a specialist in one technology/area in order to secure the big contracts. However I've also heard from other sources that it's better to spread your expertise so that you're not limited in the types of work you can go for. Personally I've pretty much been involved in both back and front-end technologies during the course of my career, with slight variations in the weighting of each depending on the job. I don't really have a favourite - I enjoy it all. My question is mainly to the experienced contractors though: Do you feel specialising has helped your career or is it better to know a bit of everything? Thanks

  • What You Said: Giving an Old Laptop a New Life

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
Earlier this week we asked you to share your tips and tricks for breathing life into an old laptop, now we’re back to share your junk-bin sparing methods. Many of you worked to keep old laptops from getting scrapped by dusting them off and donating them. Mark writes: My acquaintances & friends give me their old computers when they buy a new one. So I disassemble, clean, install an opsys, and get internet working. I also upgrade memory, wireless, etc. from my parts bin. Then I give it to a poor person who needs a computer. Usually a single working mom with kids. I also do the same with old desktops as well. They really appreciate them and It gives me the satisfaction of resurrecting an old computer. • Screenshot Tour: 10 New Features in Android 4.2 Jelly Bean

    - by Chris Hoffman
Android 4.2 improves on Android 4.1 in numerous ways, adding a variety of new features. Android 4.2 isn’t as big an update as Android 4.1, also called Jelly Bean, but it’s a definite improvement. If you have a Nexus 7 or Galaxy Nexus, you should be getting this update very soon. Unfortunately, it will likely take quite a bit longer for manufacturers to ship Android 4.2 on non-Nexus devices. Computers can sleep, hibernate, or shut down. Sleep allows you to quickly resume using your laptop at the cost of some electricity. Hibernate is like shutting down your computer, but you can still resume working where you left off. There’s no right answer in all situations. Some people leave their computers running 24/7, while others shut down computers the moment they step away. Each of these options has its advantages and disadvantages. • RPC protocols comparison

    - by Ricardo
I have to select a protocol/technology to use for communicating a client-server architecture, with support both for Python and C. The main requirements are: Symmetrical communication in between ends: clients establish a connection and servers can send data back to clients through the same connection. Avoid excessive overhead by using HTTP or a big stack (if possible, TCP direct communication). TLS/SSL support for secure communications. Ease of implementation. For that, I evaluated the following protocols/communications technologies. Is the information on this table accurate and correct? (*1) TLS support for RPyC is based in a no-longer supported Python library.
