  I would like to understand some fundamental VS version differences, What is the difference between Visual Studio 2008 and Visual Studio 2008 Team System? Does the Team System 2008 include VS2008, TFS 2008 & Team Explorer 2008? Furthermore, what is the difference betwene Team System 2008 and Team Suite 2008? I beleive there are no more Team Suites or Team Systems in 2010? Does Visual Studio Ultimate 2010 include all Team System components, like TFS 2010 & Team Explorer 2010, so in effect it is like an upgrade of Visual Studio 2008 Team System? Or does TFS 2010 & Team Explorer 2010 need to be installed separately?

• XP boot timer=> set, but does nothing?

  My PC has XP Pro and the boot.ini file looks like this: [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\windows [operating systems] C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\windows="eXPee Pro" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect Up until about a week ago it would just time-out and boot normally. I haven't made any hardware changes at all. Now, when the system boots it just sits there and waits for me to hit -enter-. I've searched all over for explanations & possible causes, but found nothing which seems to relate. Anyone here have any idea what may have caused the timer to simply quit working like that ? (BTW, the system clock works just as it ever did and keeps time precisely.) Thanks.

  Hi, I'm new to this site but have found the articles and feedback very useful. We have a Server Room which our Organisation owns and controls, yet there are several thirs party companies that have open access to this room. As such, we have been asked to put together a protocol paper that stipulates the standards that we expect to be adhered to when working in this room. Other than the monitoring of UPS loads, Air Cooling functionality, alarm systems etc, does any one have any guidance on the kind of issues that need to be documented to make this protocol all encompassing? I'm thinking along the lines of not leaving cardboard or other combustibles in the room, not having food and drink in the room, not altering the fabric of the building by drilling through walls etc? • Can I repair a short circuiting problem in a Dell Inspiron 6000 that occurs when it is picked up?

  I have a couple of Dell Inspiron 6000 notebooks that work perfectly fine unless you pick them up by one corner (as most people would). When you lift the notebook it flexes slightly and the notebook shorts out. Sometimes even a gentle bump will cause this to happen. So far the notebook always starts back up without issue, but this behavior is...inconvenient. It occurred to me that someone familiar with the innards might be able to suggest a little MacGyver fix for this. A little electrical tape in the right spot or something like that. Or perhaps this is a common problem and the answer is here, waiting for me to stumble on the correct keywords. I would appreciate any suggestions Note: It is probably worth mentioning that I have disassembled a Dell notebook before to replace a bluetooth card so I comfortable opening up the systems.

• Is it possible to create a read-only user account for security auditing purposes?

  An organization requires several administrators to have a role of a security auditor. They must have read-only (via network/remote) access to Windows Server 2008 / R2 systems and have permissions to view the server configuration. They must not be able to make any other changes to the server or the network, like restarting or making any configuration chanages. However I can't find any built-in settings for a user like this. The closest thing is the "Users" user group [1], however from my understanding every user in the domain is in this group and cannot view the domain server's configuration. • Burned white shadow on 24inch monitor

  So I got this brand new monitor today an noticed the following problem: This happens while I'm moving my browser window for example. It's not font related, it also happens with icons as you can see on the picture. It's only persistend while I'm moving something, the faster I move it, the farther away is the shadow from the origin. I tested it on windows, linux and two different systems with DVI and VGA. Is this a known issue ? • Add MS-DOS boot option to Windows 2000

  I've got an old laptop that is running Windows 2000 & Windows 98 in a multi-boot configuration. I need to add MS-DOS to that list of startup options. I've already added a primary partition, formatted it for FAT16 and made it bootable, and installed MS-DOS 6.22. My question is, how do I add my MS-DOS partition to the list of startup options? More information: My single hard drive has three primary partitions: 0: FAT32 Windows 2000 1: FAT32 Windows 98 2: FAT(16) MS-DOS 6.22 Currently, the boot-up screen lists Windows 2000 and Windows 98 as options, with Windows 2000 as the default choice. • Archiving old, outdated hard drives

  I have a number of old hard drives. I've decided to throw them out. But before I do that, I'd like to keep the contents of hard drives, intact. I tried to use the ISO file format to archive but the major problem is that it loses file attributes and can't create directories with exceeding depth of 8 levels. I do have drives over a variety of file systems; FAT, NTFS, ext2, ext3 and HFS and I'd like to archive them without any loss of information.

• HTTPS is not working in transparent proxy with Squid

  Hi I am using Squid proxy 3.1, all systems in the LAN connects to the internet through proxy. Direct connection is blocked using the iptables from the gateway server. There are some devices which does not have options for auto proxy or manual proxy and can only connect to the internet directly. So I enabled transparent proxy in Squid and redirected packets for port 80 and 443 to Squid proxy using iptables. Now the problem is it is working fine for HTTP port but HTTPS is not working. It is throwing "ssl_error_rx_record_too_long" error. If it is not possible through transparent proxy can you please suggest me another solution. Warm Regards Supratik

• Invalid BOOT.INI (dual boot XP with 7)

  I had Windows XP x64 as my main system, and i also had a second partition with Windows XP x64. Both booted from first partition (C:) I then installed Windows 7 Ultimate on the first partition. I've added NTLDR using BCDRDIT. I've also copied NTLDR, NTDETECT.COM and BOOT.INI onto the drive where XP remained. However then i try to boot into Windows XP x64 i get Invalid BOOT.INI file Booting from c:\windows\ NTDETECT failed I found instructions on how to fix it using a boot disk, however the partitions are on a software RAID. I've tried to boot from a customized XP CD with the drivers, however it does not offer me a Repair option for some reason - just setup. Partitions that i have:'= System Reserved Main (Windows 7) Secondary (Windows XP x64) Here's the contents of my BOOT.INI: [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional x64 Edition" /fastdetect

• Access Denied on a Drive where All Users list have been deleted in Security Tab

  Hi All, (System is Windows 7 x64) I wanted to restrict access of other people in a certain drive of my computer (Harddisk 1 is partitioned to C & D; I want to restrict Drive D). What I did was go to the Security Tab (under Drive Properties) and remove the All Users entry. My account is an administrator account. I left only Systems and Administrator on the list. However, when I tried to access drive D, I got an Access Denied error, and Security Tab is already missing. I tried to edit Local Group Policy; it does not work. Take Ownership is not available for the Drive as well, but I see it enabled if I select files / folders. Please help. Thanks. Also, I am wondering why, as an Administrator, have my access to that drive denied.

• How to install compiler and binutils on FreeNAS?

  I'd like to run a backup tool, duplicity, that apparently requires a cc compiler and binutils. I'm able to locate and install the required BSD packages for python, gcc, and dependencies from ftp2.freebsd.org. However, I can't find binutils. How are binutils installed on a system like FreeNAS? I'm working with FreeNAS 0.70 (based on FreeBSD 7.2). I see several packages with binutils in the name, but it's not clear any of them are for my i386 platform. e.g. I see i386-rtems-binutils-2.19.1, but I can't find any info that suggests this is correct for my platform. Google results mention it's for realtime systems.

• How can I selectively increase latency? E.g. throttle games

  Basically, I want networked games to run poorly on a network, but I want everything else to run smoothly. I would also appreciate advice on blocking games in general. As far as I can tell, there's a few ways to completely prevent an internet game from running: Blocking entirely via DNS configuration (e.g. hosts file), or router DNS configuration Blocking entirely via a separate DNS server Blocking the application, by uninstalling or some kind of access control Blocking the application by automatically killing the process every once in a while Blocking the application by corrupting files periodically However, I would like a more subtle way to block a program. Something that either: Increases latency (would this be doable through some kind of QoS like what DD-WRT offers?) Increases latency by using a special routing configuration for specific target IPs Throttle other systems resources, such as memory, IO, or CPU Screw around with keyboard configurations when a game is launched I would like this to work on MacOSX and Windows, but Linux would be great too. FYI I don't have a kid, but I was brainstorming with some friends and parents.

• Ubuntu issues when moving hard disk to new system

  I'm working on a legacy project with a small single board computer running Ubuntu 10.04 on a compact flash card. I need to be able to save away a working image (via dd) and copy said image to other compact flash cards for use in other single board computers (with identical hardware) I'm able to copy the image to other flash cards and bootup on other systems no problem. But I'm seeing strange behavior. For instance, I can't use sudo on the new system (“sudo: must be setuid root”). I've gone down the path of trying to fix this, but have run into a slew of other issues. General question is: what do I need to be aware of when moving a hard disk containing Ubuntu (in my case a compact flash card) to another computer? I was hoping it would be seamless to Ubuntu since it's moving to a system with identical hardware. Is there something that needs to be done to make it "portable"?

Also, how do I find if OS is 32-bit or 64-bit and thus how to know which version to download from this link. Also for any installed application say firefox, how do I know which bit version is installed. How popular are 64-bit hardware/OSs?. • Best way to backup Xbox 360 USB Drive

  What is the best way to backup/restore my USB drive that I use for my Xbox? I want to make sure that if the USB drive goes, that I can retrieve my saved games and such onto another USB drive. I was able to show the content of the drive, however, I wasn't sure if I could simply copy the content onto a Truecrypt volume and be able to restore it from there at a later date. The file system is not FAT or NTFS, wasn't sure about the impacts of copying from two different file systems... I currently have a DataTraveler G3 16GB. • Ruby, Rails & MySQL parity between Mac Client (10.6) & XServe (10.5)

  We're setting up a RoR setup with Development on Mac OS X Client (10.6.3) and then using a Mac OS X Server (10.5.8) for testing and eventually deployment. I'd like to get as many systems in sync on these machines as possible. Wondering if there are any pitfalls. I seem to understand what's necessary under Client but Server has some hardwired stuff that I want to make sure doesn't break...or is updated correctly. Currently installed on both machines we have: OS X Client (10.6.3): Ruby 1.8.7 Rails 2.3.5 MySQL (not installed yet) OS X Server (10.5.8): Ruby 1.8.6 Rails 2.3.5 MySQL Ver 14.12 Distrib 5.0.82 Any suggestions...Ideally from someone who's done this on Leopard Server as well but I'll listen to general tips & proceedures

• Linux server remounted to read-only

  I have tried to find anwser on SF, but no luck. Nothing worked. (and I have just basic knowledge of linux systems - I'm more developer) Hour ago I noticed that database is not reacting anymore. From some reason system went to readonly mode. Complete server is now, ofc, unavailable. Server is VPS in Dutch company, and have no idea what I can do with it now to unlock it. Every suggestion would be more then appriciated. I tried to save as much of database as possible but there are 20G of images, that would be hard to backup, but I can do that also, if that is something that is smart to do.

At the end of the semester, the PCs will be full of viruses, corrupt system files, all sorts of illegal downloads etc. (everything you can expect from a student environment). • Easy Deployment Split Tunnel VPN Connection

  I was wondering if anybody could offer some insight as to how I can mass deploy VPN connection settings that support split tunneling. It has to work on both Mac and Windows systems though if a script is used, it obviously can be 2 separate scripts for both platforms. I will be setting up a Windows server with a file server and Exchange server and to access the file server I will have the clients go through VPN because we will have sensitive data. I don't want the servers network to be bogged down with the clients normal internet traffic so I will be needing some way to setup split tunneling on the clients without them having to put in a few commands every time to setup the static routes. Ive looked at Cisco VPN client but I want to try and stick with windows RRAS and avoid buying a Cisco VPN endpoint. Im basically looking for a good VPN client that can support split tunneling and mass deployment.

• Force Steam (and other programs that do not specify proxy settings) to use a proxy

  My school requires a proxy for all internet access. If you want to use the internet, it is impossible to not use a proxy. This makes it a problem for many programs that don't seem to let you enter proxy settings. How can I use Steam when I am behind a proxy? Is it possible to somehow enter the details into a configuration file, or force it to get the settings from Internet Explorer? If not, does software exist for creating a 'virtual' network adapter which will pass all traffic (or all protocol x traffic) through the proxy? Although I am facing this specific problem on Windows 7, solutions for all operating systems are welcome.

• How do you enable syslogd to accept incoming connections on Snow Leopard from remote loggers?

  How do I get syslogd to accept incoming connections from remote hosts on Snow Leopard? I'd like to centralize logging such that various devices and systems send logs to Snow Leopard's syslogd, which normally hangs out on UDP 514. However, I'm unable to get them to successfully be accepted by good ole syslogd. I tcpdumped on the Snow Leopard box to verify that packets are being spouted to port 514 -- they are. I checked that syslogd is listening on 514 -- it's not. Googling around told me that, on older versions of OSX (don't you love the way things change so rapidly on OSX), one just had to add a flag to the syslogd daemon to allow remote; one did this in com.apple.syslogd.plist. However the syslogd daemon has no flags (at least in its man page) that suggests any remote anything. What's the solution to this? Secondary, less import but relevant question: What's 'newsyslog'? I see a plist file but it's not running (apparently). Thanks

• No option for keeping installed programs when upgrading Windows 7 to Windows 8

  (Related : How can I upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 and keep my files and applications? ) I'm trying to upgrade my Windows 7 Pro (msdnaa) to Windows 8 Pro (msdnaa). The Windows 8 is the final version (I don't have access to previews on msdnaa anymore). As you can see on the related question accepted answer, Windows 8 should give an option to keep installed programs. But it does not. The only available options are "Keep only personal datas" and "Nothing". Any idea ? I'm running with SP1. I've got two partitions (one of them only contains data of a virtual machine). • Full speed internal switch bandwidth but per-port set external bandwidth?

  I am in an environment where all the machines are behind a switch that I don't have access to. Each ethernet wall port has limited bandwidth depending on how much has been paid for each port. The problem is that some people have 10Mbps connections and some have 100Mbps connections and this causes problems with local intranet file transfers and operating system/software deployments. Operating systems can take hours to be deployed if the machine is on 10mbps. Do you know if it is possible with most switches to set a rule that would limit bandwidth coming in/going out to an extranet, but keep full bandwidth if the packets are destined to go to a local machine? For example, the internet might be limited to 10Mbps, but internal servers would get gigabit speeds? Thanks

Sometimes my VPN Clients disconnected from Systems but it shows in system tray i.e. connected but we are not able to access my application on the server.Then I disabled my Local area connection on client machine but it doesn't effect until I restart my System again.Firstly I want to know Task Manager Service for my VPN Client & how this problem can be remove.Waiting for reply.
