• Ubercart for 'serious' ecommerce?

  Im big Drupal fan, and some very high profile sites use Drupal which also suggests that its a good system. Can the same be said for Ubercart? Ive used it for some small e commerce sites purely because I know Drupal. It seems to lack some basic features and also relies on javascript. I dont know of any high profile e commerce sites using it. My productivity would take a big hit if I had to learn a new e commerce platform and also if I couldn't use my favorite CMS with it, but do I have a choice? If not I guess I can hope that Drupal 7's Commerce module will be an improvement. Thanks

• How to render a retro-like pixel graphics from 3d models?

  I was wondering if there's a possibility to render a retro-pixel-like graphics from 3d model in real time? I'm talking about the Starfarer-like graphics. I know it's hand drawn, and it's 2d. But if I need a 3d objects with the same aesthetics? I'm currently working with Flash. But I don't need any ready-solutions, I just want to understand the principle from any other platform if there is one. So if anybody met anything like this I would appreciate your help. (If it's not possible to do in real time, I could at least pre-render a sequence of sprites. It would be much better than creating hundreds of hand-drawn ones)

• What almost unknown programming language of 21st century a programmer should be introduced to?

  Which languages almost nobody talks about but has some interesting features or concepts? It must satisfy the following 2 criteria: It must have been created in 2000 or later. Ex.: REBOL, Squeak, Oberon, etc. are out. It can't have some fame among programmers. Ex.: Groovy, C#, Scala, Go, Clojure, D, etc are out. The language doesn't need be good or totally implemented. License or platform doesn't matter. The language needs to be new and interesting. I posted a good example of language I wanna know. If you wish TIOBE can be used as reference to measure "fame", but don't cling on it.

• Would it be possible to build a client portal on Squarespace6?

  I'm helping a family member set up a site which will need to include a secure client portal, providing access to documents and a simple database. I have been encouraging them to go with a more established, open source CSM like drupal or joomla, whose capability in this area is evident. However, they have a strong preference for Squarespace. Does any one know if it would be possible to accomplish this with the new developer platform for squarespace 6? I've spent well over an hour searching google, the squarespace site and stackexchange, but can't seem to find any clear answer to this question. I'm grateful for any insight you all can provide.

• Realtek 8188ce stops working after 2minutes

  I am using ubuntu 12.10 on an hp dm4-2191us via wubi with the Realtek 8188ce wifi adapter. Everything works very well with the exception of the wifi. I have used wicd and it didn't worked at all so i went back to Network Manager with variable success. It works for 30 min - 2 min before i have to reconnect to get it to work again. I would really like to use Ubuntu (it is a better platform in my opinion) but no wifi could really be a deal breaker.

• Petstore using Java EE 6 ? Almost!

  Antonio Goncalves, a Java Champion, JUG leader, and a well-known author, has started building a Petstore-like application using Java EE 6. The complete end-to-end sample application will build a eCommerce website and follows the Java EE 6 design principles of simple and easy-to-use to its core. Its using several technologies from the platform such as JPA 2.0, CDI 1.0, Bean Validation 1.0, EJB Lite 3.1, JSF 2.0, and JAX-RS 1.1. The two goals of the project are: • use Java EE 6 and just Java EE 6 : no external framework or dependency • make it simple : no complex business algorithm The application works with GlassFish and JBoss today and there are plans to add support for TomEE. • Is HTML5 more secure to develop for than Silverlight?

  I'm learning Silverlight, and I know that if I master it, I can apply the same concepts to WPF, which means I can do either web or desktop development pretty easily. But I've read articles and followed the discussion online, and I understand HTML5 is gaining traction for being cross-platform, and a lot of people seem to be moving to HTML5. From my understanding, any HTML5 application would be built with HTML and JavaScript (or Flash). But is it secure? It seems like anyone can easily use their browser's "view source" option and grab your code. Is this something I should be worried about, or is there a way to protect against it?

• Can't see YouTube videos in either Firefox or Chromium

  Dont' know why or if it is related, after upgrading Ubuntu 10.04 kernel ( I guess from 2.6.32-38 to -42) I can's see youtube videos. I checked the flash plug-ins installed and I have: (1) flashplugin-installer, (2) flashplugin-nonfree and (3) flashplugin-nonfree-extrasound. I haven't reinstalled the browsers yet.   What pros or cons should a beginner be aware of when deciding between a 2d game engine (like Slick2D/Flixel/FlashPunk) and a 3d engine (like Unity) for 2d game development? I am just getting started in indie game development, though I have dabbled a bit with Game Maker, Flash, and XNA in the past. I've heard a lot of positive things about Unity, and its cross-platform nature makes it appealing, but as I understand, it's a 3d engine at its core. For a strictly 2d game, are there any compelling reasons to work with a 3d engine like Unity? Or would it just add unneeded complexity to my initial learning experience?

  A recent Oracle internal performance evaluation for computer-based product design demonstrated that Oracle's SPARC T5-4 server running MSC's SimManager simulation software with Oracle Database 12c consolidates the work of multiple x86 servers while delivering better overall performance.   Engineering simulation solutions have taken the center stage in helping companies design and develop innovative products while reducing physical prototyping costs, and exploring a larger design space, resulting in more design possibilities. For this solution, a single SPARC T5-4 server running Oracle Solaris 11 was deployed to consolidate the MSC SimManager server, the Oracle Database 12c server, and the web application server onto a single platform.   I have to build a new website for my client.. and he needs this stuff: A user generated content website.. where users can upload their own videos.. (i will use a video hosting platform with api like fliqz.com) I must manage a big user system.. where users can create their own "sub-users"... the site must manage paid subscriptions and payments through paypal.. and other payment gateways... So the question is.. i have to use a pre-built CMS and extend it.. or just a good framework? I've been thinking about joomla, drupal and expressionengine... It's not neccesary to use a open source cms... I've looking at drupal.. but is not as easy to understand and extend... Can anyone help me to make a good decision?

• Audio libraries for PC indie games [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Cross-Platform Audio API Suggestions What options are out there these days for audio playback/mixing in C++? Primarily for Windows, but portability (particularly to Mac and iOS) would be desirable. For a small indie game, potentially commercial, though - so I'm looking for something free/low-cost. My requirements are fairly basic - I don't need 3D sound, or many-channels - simple stereo is fine. Just need to be able to mix sound effects and a music stream, maybe decoding one or more compressed audio formats (.ogg/.mp3 etc), with all the basic controls over looping, pitch, volume, etc. Is OpenAL more-or-less the standard choice, or are there other good options out there?

  The number of platforms I have to develops apps for is increasing and It brings me lots of stress to learn new technologies for each target platform. I found out that Telerik's Kendo UI is very good to build websites that look and feel native on mobile platforms (e.g. iOS and Android). My question is, is it possible to build HTML5 apps to deploy them on iTunes App Store and Google Play? Please note that I am eager to know the possibility of creating apps (complete apps bundled in standard format of Apple and Google for distribution in their respective mobile app markets) but not websites.
