  • How to bind old user's SID to new user to remain NTFS file ownership and permissions after freshly reinstall of Windows?

    Each time we reinstalled Windows, it will create a new SID for user even the username is as same as before. // example (not real SID format, just show the problem) user SID -------------------- liuyan S-old-501 // old SID before reinstall liuyan S-new-501 // new SID after reinstall The annoying problem after reinstall is NTFS file owership and permissions on hard drive disk are still associated with old user's SID. I want to keep the ownership and permission setting of NTFS files, then want to let the new user take the old user's SID, so that I can access files as before without permission problem. The cacls command line tool can't be used in such situation, because the file does belongs to new user, so it will failed with Access is denied error. and it can't change ownership. Even if I can change the owership via SubInACL tool, cacls can't remove the old user's permission because the old user does not exist on new installation, and can't copy the old user's permission to new user. So, can we simply bind old user's SID to new user on the freshly installed Windows ? I have re-installed SVN, CHILI and the OS several times, and it always works for a couple of hours/days and then it just stops working. Well, everything works, except I can't upload any files. Committing directories seems to work just fine, but when I try to commit a file it breaks. What I should note, perhaps, is that I use Ubuntu 12.04.3 with ruby 1.9.3, mysql 14.14 and I have it set up that Chiliproject handles the authentication and authorization for the project. It works, because I can commit directories and read it all correctly, though I can't upload files. Help would really be appreciated, as I don't know what on earth is going on with this 'truncated http response body'. I tried to read them with wireshark, but it basically gave me the same information. With regards, Ps. I have no clue what the delay between put and delete is, as it's a file of a mere 500 bytes, so it's uploaded in approximately a second. Pps. I copied this question from StackOverflow to this site, as I didn't know the existence of this site and another user suggested that I'd get more answers here, as it's basically a server fault.

    I'm an Emacs/Mac user trapped on Windows at work and I often type Control-W from muscle memory to delete a word and thus by mistake kill the entire window, including everything that I was working on. This a particularly egregious problem for Console2 as I run GNU Screen and am often doing many things at once. Is there any way to completely disable Control-W or remap it to something that is far harder to type? Thanks!

I have applied a Group Policy to clean temporary internet files on exit i.e to delete all temporary internet files when users close the browser. But the group policy doesn't seem to work as user profile size keeps on increasing and the major space is occupied by temporary internet files therefore increasing the disk usage. How can i enforce automatic deletion of temporary internet files?

Why do they sell instance storage then if it's not used also to boot the base system? Is it safe to uncheck delete on termination, make it bigger (~50GiB) and keep all files on that EBS instead of creating a new one to make sure data will persist and it will also be usable by another instance?

However it seems as tho the 'www' user does not have permission to run 'chmod' on any files.     When I look at the TTL (Time to Live) for PTR records (Reverse Lookup Zone) on one of our Windows 2003 DNS servers I see some are at 15 minutes, others are at 20. They have "Delete this record when it becomes stale" checked. These PTR records are for workstations that get IPs from Windows DHCP, so I think that creates the PTR records dynamically? How is TTL for these records set?

  • Our VPS is being used as a Warez mule

    The company I work for runs a series of ecommerce stores on a VPS. It's a WAMP stack, 50gb storage. We use an archaic piece of ecommerce software which operates almost entirely client-side. When an order is taken, it writes it to disk and then we schedule a task to download the orders once every 10 minutes. A few days ago, we ran out of disk space, which caused orders to fail to be written. I quickly hopped on to delete some old logs from the mailserver and freed up a couple of GB pretty quickly, but I wondered how we could fill up 50gb will nothing much more than logs. Turns out, we didn't. Hidden deep within the c:\System Volume Information directory, we have a stack of pirated videos, which seem to have appeared (looking at the timestamps) over the past three weeks. Porn, American Sports, Australian cooking shows. A very odd collection. Doesn't look like an individual's personal tastes - more like the VPS is being used as a mule. We have a 5-attempts and you're blocked policy on our FTP server (plus, there is no FTP account with access to that directory), and the windows user account has had it's password changed recently. The main avenues are sealed - and logs can verify that. I thought I'd watch and see if it happened again, and yes, another cooking show has appeared this morning. I am the only one to know of this problem at my company, and only one of two with access to the VPS (the other being my boss, but no - it's not him). So how is this happening? Is there a vulnerability in some of the software on the VPS? Are the VPS owners peddling warez across our rented space? (can they do this?) I don't want to delete the warez in case it is seen as a hostile action against this outside force, and they choose to retaliate. What should I do? How do I troubleshoot this? Has this happened to anyone else before?
