• Creating a data driven web front end quickly

  Over the last few years, I can't count how many web front ends I've had to create over a relatively simple database schema to fasciliate data entry. I have to imagine that someone out there has written a framework I can use to simplify the creation of these kind of simple GUIs. Doing a quick google, the following look like the key players in .net: ASP.Net dynamic data framework SubSonic NakedObjects for .net Has anyone worked with any of these and have any preferences? More importantly, are there other frameworks that would be good to evaluate in this space?

• Managing Foreign Keys

  So I have a database with a few tables. The first table contains the user ID, first name and last name. The second table contains the user ID, interest ID, and interest rating. There is another table that has all of the interest ID's. For every interest ID (even when new ones are added), I need to make sure that each user has an entry for that interest ID (even if its blank, or has defaults). Will foreign keys help with this scenario? or will I need to use PHP to update each and every record when I add a new key?

  just some general and specific questions about running a business which uses open source software and sells training, services, and other value added solutions utilizing the open source asset(s). 1) how much modification do you need to make to an existing open source software/framework to give a new brand ? open source (GPLv3) branding issues here.... for ex) Mambo and Joomla, i think they are pretty much same ? but they have different labels. 2) Is there a disadvantage of promoting open source software/framework/suite in hopes of selling value added services and solutions on top of the Open source asset ? 3) can Open source assets be marketing point for lowered Total Ownership Cost and transparency ? meaning, clients will not be using some mysterious, opaque proprietary asset ? 4) is competition fierce? cost of developing software is non existing because you are using an open source asset. barrier to entry is minimal ??

  I really love org-mode in emacs and want to customize a few things. While reading thru org.el, I'm finding several references to filename but can't find filename using describe-function? I'm sure there's a simple answer, but I'm just learning elisp and it's not obvious. Any insight into where filename is defined? And/or if it's not a function, what is it? • two or more timer with different intervals with C#

  Hi guys, I have to a d.b entry in which the intervals are given, Suppose 1 timer tm_5 will check the entries after every 5 mins & the timer tm_10 will check the entries after every 10 mins, The problem is that it checks only the entries for tm_5 not for the tm_10. I am using C#.net 2005 & MS sql server 2005. Guys please me with full code beacuase I am new to this field.. Thnks a lot... Kaushal

• Memcache localhost connection oddity

  When I try to connect to memcache using this code: $memcache = new Memcache; $memcache->connect('localhost', 11211) or die ("Could not connect"); The call dies with the "Could not connect" error, but if I use localhost's IP: $memcache = new Memcache; $memcache->connect('127.0.0.1', 11211) or die ("Could not connect"); It works! So what's my problem? Well, this new computer is the only development environment I've setup that's been sensitive to that difference. I'm not about to go changing the settings on any code for what seems to be a computer specific issue, but I can't figure out what could be causing this behaviour... Any ideas? I'm running XP, memcached 1.2.4, and wampserver 2. I've checked the hosts file and it does have an entry for localhost.

• File.mkdir is not working and I can't understand why

  Hello, I've this brief snippet: String target = baseFolder.toString() + entryName; target = target.substring(0, target.length() - 1); File targetdir = new File(target); if (!targetdir.mkdirs()) { throw new Exception("Errore nell'estrazione del file zip"); } doesn't mattere if I leave the last char (that is usually a slash). It's done this way to work on both unix and windows. The path is actually obtained from the URI of the base folder. As you can see from baseFolder.toString() (baseFolder is of type URI and is correct). The base folder actually exists. I can't debug this because all I get is true or false from mkdir, no other explanations.The weird thing is that baseFolder is created as well with mkdir and in that case it works. Now I'm under windows. the value of target just before the creation of targetdir is "file:/C:/Users/dario/jCommesse/jCommesseDB" if I cut and paste it (without the last entry) in windows explore it works...

• Migrating C# code from Cassandra .5 to .6

  I have some some simple code derived from an example that is meant to form a quick write to the Cassandra db, then loop back and read all current entries, everything worked fine. When .6 came out, i upgraded Cassandra and thrift, which threw errors in my code (www[dot]copypastecode[dot]com/26760/) - i was able to iron out the errors by converting the necessary types, however in the version that compiles now only seems to read one item back, im not sure if its not saving db changes or if its only reading back 1 entry. the "fixed" code is here: http://www.copypastecode.com/26752/. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• SQL: Find difference between dates with grouping

  I have a problem that seems similar to this fellow - I just want to display the data slightly differently. I'm pretty terrible with SQL so can't modify it to suit, but perhaps someone else can. My table looks similar to this (date format is dd/mm/yyyy): ID User Date_start Role 1 Andy 01/04/2010 A 2 Andy 10/04/2010 B 3 Andy 20/04/2010 A 4 John 02/05/2010 A I want to show the total number of days that anyone was in a certain role. Users stay in the role until there is another entry into the table. Users can only be in one role at a time. • Saving Blob data from SQLite database to a file

  Hello, I'm trying to save blob data from a SQLite database (Safari cache: Cache.db) to a file, but for some reason sqlite won't read the whole blob. I eventually would like to do this in ruby, but for now something that works directly in sqlite command prompt is fine. Also, I've read all of the entries that talk about this here on stackoverflow, but most of them only discuss the performance of saving images in blobs and the one entry that does show to save blobs to file is in C# which does not help me.   Does anyone know of any issues with the ILClone() function on Windows 2000? Is it fully supported? MSDN says it runs on Windows 2000 but I have a user reporting that my program will not run on Windows 2000 because of that function. EDIT: I was able to get a hold of a Win2K system and I can confirm the issue. Shell32.dll version installed is 5.0.3700.6705. The error message shown when running the program is: The procedure entry point ILClone could not be located in the dynamic link library SHELL32.DLL

• Perl: parsing string enclosed by double quotes

  I need to parse tab/space delimited files that have a lot of columns in Perl. The values are such that the there are large strings enclosed within double quotes. These strings can have any characters such as tabs and spaces or anything else. When I try to parse them with the split function it splits these strings as well. Now how can I make perl understand that the strings within the " " are a single column entry? A simple example is, 12 345546.67677 "Hello World!!!" -567.55656 0.5465767 "Hello_Again; "

• How to detect popup of a sub-menu of a popup menu (and how to populate it dynamically)?

  Hi everyone, I have a popup menu which contains several menu items and one of them can have child items. This entry has a little arrow on the right and when you hover your mouse over it, a sub-menu will open. Now I want to populate this sub-menu at runtime, but only if the user actually opens it. If the user never opens the sub-menu, it will be empty (maybe contain a placeholder). How could I accomplish this? Is it even possible to modify a popup-menu when it is already visible?   So you have two taxonomies, namely: "Business Type" and "Location" This is assigned to a node called BUSINESS. In effect, when the user creates a BUSINESS node, her has to choose for example, location "New York" and type "Information Services". My problem is when: a) Capturing the taxonomy, and b) Displaying the taxonomy I want the two terms to be separated from each other. I.e. I want to be able to move the two terms individual positions in the MANAGE FIELDS view, so that they can be grouped or placed seperately. Currently, Drupal only allows one entry, called "TAXONOMY" which is effectively the two terms next to each other.   The specific problem is, the support of condition variable on Windows begins from Vista, for early version of Windows (Windows XP), I have a emulated condition variable code sort of solved the problem. However, I'd like to have the ability to call native condition variable API when the system supported and fallback to my version only on XP and earlier version. I tried to detect windows version with GetVersionInfo API, but it still gives me error on start time (cannot find API entry of InitializeConditionVariable sort of). I am not familiar with Windows programming, how do you solve the gentle fallback problem nicely?

I've been using a generic function: def generic_edit(request, modelname, object_id): modelname = modelname.lower() form_class = form_dict[modelname] return update_object(request, form_class = form_class, object_id = object_id, template_name = 'createdit.html' ) but this pulls in all the info except the many-to-many selections saved to this object. I think I need to do something similar to this: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1700202/editing-both-sides-of-m2m-in-admin-page, but I haven't figured it out. How do I use the generic update_object to edit the other side of many-to-many link?

  I've created a simple application .Net Class that converts an excel spreadsheet into a a pdf file. I then get a Excel 2007 application to call this dll which works fine on my development machine. However when i deploy it on to a machine that has both the .net framework and excel 2007, i get this error - run-time error '429' activex component can't create object when i try and register the tlb or the dll , i get error below. the module c:\temp\test\Printlibarary.dll2 was loaded but the entry-point dllregisterserver was not found. Make sure that ...... is a valid dll or ocx file and then try again. Can someone please help me to resolve this.

  I am trying to use the new LiveConnect features introduced in Java 6 Update 10. Code looks like this (copied from the applet tutorial): Class<?> c = Class.forName("com.sun.java.browser.plugin2.DOM"); Method m = c.getMethod("getDocument", java.applet.Applet.class); Document document = (Document) m.invoke(null, this); But all I am getting is a ClassNotFoundException for the entry-point class. This on the Mac, 10.6, with both Firefox and Safari. Java Plug-in 1.6.0_22 Using JRE version 1.6.0_22-b04-307-10M3261 Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM Is this not implemented on the Mac? Or do I need to configure something? All I need to do is get and set the value of form elements on the page, so I would be fine with an older (pre-6u10) API if that works better.

  I have three tables (user, friends, posts) and two users (user1 and user2). When user1 adds user2 as friend then user1 can see the posts of user2 just like on Facebook. But only the posts after the date when user1 added user2 as friend. How can I fix it?
