  • Is XSLT worth investing time in and are there any actual alternatives?

    I realize this has been a few other questions on this topic, and people are saying use your language of choice to manipulate the XML etc etc however, not quite fit my question exactly. Firstly, the scope of the project: We want to develop platform independent e-learning, currently, its a bunch of HTML pages but as they grow and develop they become hard to maintain. The idea: Generate up an XML file + Schema, then produce some XSLT files that process the XML into the eLearning modiles. XML to HTML via XSLT. Why: We would like the flexibilty to be able to easy reformat the content (I realize CSS is a viable alternative here) If we decide to alter the pages layout or functionality in anyway, im guessing altering the "shared" XSLT files would be easier than updating the HTML files. So far, we have about 30 modules, with up to 10-30 pages each Depending on some "parameters" we could output drastically different page layouts/structures, above and beyond what CSS can do Now, all this has to be platform independent, and to be able to run "offline" i.e. without a server powering the HTML Negatives I've read so far for XSLT: Overhead? Not exactly sure why...is it the compute power need to convert to HTML? Difficult to learn Better alternatives Now, what I would like to know exactly is: are there actually any viable alternatives for this "offline"? Am I going about it in the correct manner, do you guys have any advice or alternatives. Thanks!

    I'm using Haml (Haml/Sass 3.0.9 - Classy Cassidy) stand-alone to generate static HTML. I want to create a shared layout template that all my other templates inherit. Layout.haml %html %head %title Test Template %body .Content Content.haml SOMEHOW INHERIT Layout.haml SOMEHOW Change the title of the page "My Content". %p This is my content To produce: Content.html <html> <head> <title>My Content</title> </head> <body> <div class="Content"> <p>This is my content</p> </div> </body> </html> But this doesn't seem possible. I have seen the use of rendering partials when using Haml with Rails but can't find any solution when using Haml stand-alone. Having to put the layout code in all of my templates would be a maintenance nightmare; so my question is how do I avoid doing this? Is there a standard way to solve this problem? Have I missed something fundamental?

    My HTML currently contains a background image that stretches with the viewport. Within that, I plan to place a div that stretches to the height and width of the viewport and has black background colour at 50% opacity. I've set the div to be 100% width and height. The div is not stretching and I can't figure out why!   • Problem with JQuery swapImage();

    Hello!~ On my articles page (http://www.adrtimes.squarespace.com/articles) I have each entry start with an image that changes on rollover. This is working fine. However, on my homepage (http://www.adrtimes.squarespace.com), I am loading in the 2 most recent articles that are not categorized as video, and the 2 most recent articles that are tagged as video. I am using jQuery load() to pull in the content from the articles page. Everything works ok with that except the swapImage rollovers on the homepage. i tried including the swapImage function as callbacks but only one group or the other will rollover properly, not both groups of content. I'm not sure what the problem is!!   • Ubuntu 12.10 update doesnt boot. (please help)

    my name is Anthony. I updated to 12.10 and it the OS will not load accept in "pae" under advanced options. I used the boot repair cd, the only thing that workds is the monodeset option in the kernel and the graphics are terrible, mouse disappears and unity will not boot. Ubuntu 12.04 Runs great, on a clean install of 12.10 Ubuntu 12.10 wont even load to install unless under monodeset. I get left a termial like screen with just a bilking bar. Im running a HP Compaq NC6400 Laptop, Ubuntu 32-bit, 2gb ram.

  • Partitioning with preseed help

    I have a server that has 4 hds inside all in stadalone configurations (no hardware raid). I want using preseed to create a "regular" partition on disk1 on which i ll install ubuntu and create a raid 0 array with the remainning three disks. Is this possible? Can i use partman-auto/method twice inside the preseed file once for regular and once for raid? I need to use this for unattended provisioning so i need to set my disks inside the preseed file.   • Notepad++ tabbing out of tags, autocomplete

    I'm trying to learn a little HTML. Everyone says to use Notepad++ over notepad. I have autocomplete on. My question: When I type my opening tag and Notepad++ then puts"""" closing tag, how do I "jump" out of the tag when I'm done typing? If I tab or hit enter, I'm still stuck before the closing tag. I can use my arrow keys, but if I'm going to do that, I would rather just type the closing tags. Also if I have an UL of 10 items, and I want to change it to an OL, how do I select both the opening and closing tags so I may edit them at the same time? Thanks PS I wasn't able to post the HTML tags.

    I am trying to remove the context name from the url of my server. Current URL - http://www.domainname.com/MyApp/ What I need to make is to make it avaialble at - www.domainname.com/ So it is only going to host one main app and that needs to be displayed when we open www.domainname.com/ on browser. I have already tried couple of things like below - RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/(Context/.*)$ RewriteRule ^/(.*)$ /Context/$1 [P,L] OR redirect permanent /MyApp/ abcd://domainname.com OR Using JKMount - JkMount /MyApp/* ajp13 JkMount /MyApp* ajp13 OR Deploy war file to ROOT of tomcat and make relevant chagnes in web and server.xml All of these aren't working and I keep getting a intenal error.   • Some help understanding and modifying a 2D shader

    I have a similar question as the one posed here, except that I don't wish to use a 1D Color Palette. I simply wish to have it display 1 color of my choosing (red, for example). I plan to use this as a "shield" effect for a 2D ship. I also wish to understand how it works a little bit better, as I'll be the first to admit that shaders in general are not my strongest suit. I'm not asking for an overview of HLSL (as that is too broad of a subject), just an explanation of how this shader works, and the best way to implement it in a 2D game. Code examples would be ideal (even if they are theoretical) but if the answer is explained well enough, I might be able to manage with plain old text. This is also in XNA 4.0. Thanks in advance.

  • Java @Contented annotation to help reduce false sharing

    See this posting by Aleksey Shipilev for details -- @Contended is something we've wanted for a long time. The JVM provides automatic layout and placement of fields. Usually it'll (a) sort fields by descending size to improve footprint, and (b) pack reference fields so the garbage collector can process a contiguous run of reference fields when tracing. @Contended gives the program a way to provide more explicit guidance with respect to concurrency and false sharing. Using this facility we can sequester hot frequently written shared fields away from other mostly read-only or cold fields. The simple rule is that read-sharing is cheap, and write-sharing is very expensive. We can also pack fields together that tend to be written together by the same thread at about the same time. More generally, we're trying to influence relative field placement to minimize coherency misses. Fields that are accessed closely together in time should be placed proximally in space to promote cache locality. That is, temporal locality should condition spatial locality. Fields accessed together in time should be nearby in space. That having been said, we have to be careful to avoid false sharing and excessive invalidation from coherence traffic. As such, we try to cluster or otherwise sequester fields that tend to written at approximately the same time by the same thread onto the same cache line. Note that there's a tension at play: if we try too hard to minimize single-threaded capacity misses then we can end up with excessive coherency misses running in a parallel environment. Theres no single optimal layout for both single-thread and multithreaded environments. And the ideal layout problem itself is NP-hard. Ideally, a JVM would employ hardware monitoring facilities to detect sharing behavior and change the layout on the fly. That's a bit difficult as we don't yet have the right plumbing to provide efficient and expedient information to the JVM. Hint: we need to disintermediate the OS and hypervisor. Another challenge is that raw field offsets are used in the unsafe facility, so we'd need to address that issue, possibly with an extra level of indirection. Finally, I'd like to be able to pack final fields together as well, as those are known to be read-only.

  • opacity in ie using absolutely positioned divs not working

    I've been banging my head against the wall for a few hours how trying to sort this out. I'm trying to position one div on top of another for the purpose of fading one in on top of the other. The divs will have an image and some other html in them. I cannot get opacity to work in ie8.   • help with migrating from Widows, x64 FGLRX, CPU load, Java and Minecraft

    Im new to ubuntu, it is the second time i have installed it. This comp is Dell studio 1558. some specs: CPU- intel core i7 Q720 1.6GHz, GPU- ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5400 FGLRX- i've fallowed these instructions among inspecting many others, i have tried all of the variants mentioned in that tread before reverting back to the drivers supplied with Ubuntu ( through additional drivers ) which apparently seem to work best. i am testing them with minecraft as silly as it may sound. in 2 to 60 minutes the FPS drop from 70+ to somewhere between 0 and 5. while "fgl_glxgears" runs at between 400 and 800 FPS smoothly.. I am using oracle ( sun ) JRE6 to run minecraft, i have gotten it through a tutorial linked on oracle's website, i currently have no other version of java installed ( was worse when i had a few others here ). after closing the game Ubuntu is similarly slow, i've checked the CPU load using System Monitor and it shows one of the CPU's jumping to 80%~100% load at a time.. a reboot solves it. i realize my mess is up to me to solve but a hand is always appreciated. tyvm in advance.

How do I get them installed, is there a way that my "additional drivers" program could download it somehow. I have been using Linux for 10 days, so my knowledge is limited. The drivers that are in my "additional drivers" program don't work. Freezes and black screen.

  • Help with calculation to steer ship in 3d space

    I'm a beginner using XNA to try and make a 3D Asteroids game. I'm really close to having my space ship drive around as if it had thrusters for pitch and yaw. The problem is I can't quite figure out how to translate the rotations, for instance, when I pitch forward 45 degrees and then start to turn - in this case there should be rotation being applied to all three directions to get the "diagonal yaw" - right?   • How to use a rewrite rule to force calls for "domain.tld/subdir/file.html" to show as "subdir.domain.tld/file.html"?

    Hi! First time poster. Very new to mod_rewrite. I'm on a shared server and the context of this problem is with a virtual directory under my root account. The domain (domain.tld) will have subdirectories representing annual mini-sites of static .html files. Subdirectory names (yyyy) will be the 4-digit year (e.g., "2010"). I want any call to domain.tld/yyyy/file.html to appear as yyyy.domain.tld/file.html in the browser address bar, and (of course) for the page to load properly. I already force dropping “www” by using… RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www\.domain\.tld [NC] RewriteRule (.*) http://domain.tld/$1 [R=301,L] So far so good. But no matter what I try after that, I can’t get the subdomain to force to the front of the domain. Here’s one of the more complicated examples I’ve tried (no doubt wrong)… RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^domain\.tld/([0-9]+)/([a-z-]+)\.html [NC] RewriteRule (.*) %1.domain.tld/%2.html [NC] This doesn’t break anything (that I can tell), but it doesn’t do what I want either. I.e., if I type yyyy.domain.tld, I’ll see yyyy.domain.tld in the address bar, and navigating around will give me yyyy.domain.tld/file.html, etc. Fine. But if also type domain.tld/yyyy I’ll see domain.tld/yyyy, etc, which is not how I want people to see it. It doesn’t redirect or mask or alias or whatever you call it. Is it even possible to force one look over the other like that? Should I be handling this with DNS instead? Thanks in advance!

    I have a form (on page form.html) submitting with POST method to a CGI-C page - let's call it form.cgi - and what form.cgi does is it redirects the user to the previous page (to form.html) with appending query strings using HTTP-EQUIV Refresh META after 5 seconds. However, if I monitor the Web server's access.log although I see the appropriate POST request for form.cgi there is an additional GET request for form.cgi again, after 5 seconds just before redirecting the user to form.html Has anyone faced with such an issue?

  • Need help understanding Mocks and Stubs

    I'm new to use mocking frameworks and I have a few questions on the things that I am not clear on. I'm using Rhinomocks to generate mock objects in my unit tests. I understand that mocks can be created to verify interactions between methods and they record the interactions etc and stubs allow you to setup data and entities required by the test but you do not verify expectations on stubs. Looking at the recent unit tests I have created, I appear to be creating mocks literally for the purpose of stubbing and allowing for data to be setup. Is this a correct usage of mocks or is it incorrect if you're not actually calling verify on them? For example: user = MockRepository.GenerateMock<User>(); user.Stub(x => x.Id = Guid.NewGuid()); user.Stub(x => x.Name = "User1"); In the above code I generate a new user mock object, but I use a mock so I can stub the properties of the user because in some cases if the properties do not have a setter and I need to set them it seems the only way is to stub the property values. Is this a correct usage of stubbing and mocking? Also, I am not completely clear on what the difference between the following lines is: user.Stub(x => x.Id).Return(new Guid()); user.Stub(x => x.Id = Guid.NewGuid());

    Hi Step 1 I've two screens one is parent and the other one is child. On click of a button in the parent window the child popup will open. Step 2 On click of a button in child i'm displaying the html(viewsource) of parent window in a textbox(.net) and holding in a hidden variable hdnSource too. Step 3 I've 4 checkboxes in the child window. If the checkbox is not checked, then that part of html should be removed. eg: cbxPersonal, cbxProfessional if cbxProfessional is unchecked I should remove divProfessional from html which is in hdnSource and display in the textbox Can anyone help me to do the 3rd part of coding. Since the html is in the variable, I'm not able to find the div with document.getElementById
