• Cost of Design vs Development

  I usually develop content management solutions in php, I work with designers that create the front end (html & css) and I usually develop the backend (php & mysql) of said cms. I know that the cost of the website may vary depending of the complexity of the html or the backend, but taking as reference a very basic website, what percentage of the cost should go to design and what percentage should go to development. I want to make clear that I as the developer i'm in charge of all the effects and animations of the websites using some of the javascript frameworks, not the designer. I just want to know what´s the fair share for me and for the designer.

• Alpha transparent PNGs not displaying correctly in Mobile Safari

  I'm using some semi-transparent PNGs as background-images on various websites. These are usually something like a 1x1 image with a 30-percent opaque white layer. I've noticed that Mobile Safari does not display them correctly, giving them a darker/grayish tint. I've created a couple test pages to illustrate. View them both in your normal browser, and then on Mobile Safari, and you should see what I mean. (Here's how I create the PNGs: In Photoshop, create a 1x1 transparent canvas. Draw a white rectangle in Layer 1. Set opacity to, say 30 percent, Save for Web as 24-bit PNG with transparency.)

I am trying to calculate bandwidth consumption, (bytes transferred in and out) using C#, described Here using the MS Log Parser. In the above case, if the log files are deleted by the user or any administrator even, the bandwidth calculation will not be possible. Q1: *What is the standard way to measure the Bandwidth for various Hosting accounts (of websites) on a single server?* Q2: *If Log parser mechanism (as described above) is used, then how to take care of the security issue? Is there some system directory or event viewer logs or something which cannot be deleted except by the System account and contains bandwidth data?* Please point me in the right direction. Thanks

  I am using Network Solutions hosting. I was recently attacked with JS:Illredir-S [Trj], I asked my hosting providers to clean it and they cleaned it and updated all passwords, but now after a week my site got infected again with JS:ScriptIP-inf [Trj]. Can anyone please suggest me how to secure my website properly ? Should I change my hosting provider ? I am fed up of these viruses again and again on my websites. • Architecture of an image hosting site

  I'm sure many here are aware of image hosting sites, like imgur, min.us, photobucket etc. Not that I want to develop one, but besides just uploading the file, organising it in some directory somewhere, what architectural considerations are involved in these sites? Especially when there's millions of page views a day (like imgur, I'd imagine) I'm curious about this because it seems that a lot of sites (say, dating websites etc) would be pretty image intensive. Even if it's not for millions of page views, what are some basic architectural requirements of efficient image deliveries online?

• restore default css attributes

  hi all. i'm writing a component that is to be used across multiple websites. each website has it's own stylesheets and displays certain things differently. all of my html is wrapped within a div with an id: <div id="myComponent">...</div> my component however is to look consistent across all of the sites. this is fine as i apply styling to most of the attributes in my component. div#myComponent p {font-size:11px;} etc however i've come across a site that removes the border from all input fields input {border: medium none;} i need to 'un-apply' this directive for the input fields within my component, and preferrably use the browser's default styling for inputs, as the border style for input type="text" will need be different to input type="button". how would you achieve this?

  Is there any standards/guidelines/good practices for making websites with support of different content and UI? I'm interesting in articles/tutorials, that cover this topics. E.g. there going to be website for multiple countries. And user should have possibility to select UI and content languages separately. I assume that not all content will be translated, so there should be some mechanism for showing "default language" content for specific page. But again, should this "default" be per site, or per country? E.g. in some countries (Belgium, Finland) there are several official languages. If one language is unavailable, should default be second one, or English? Another example: many people prefer English UI (no mater of their origin), but want local scales (inches, meters) and local services. I don't care much about programing languages now, just want to understand what users are expected, what should be scope, and what are good practices.

• Safari box shadow inset support

  I have a box in one of my websites that has a these property: -moz-box-shadow:inset 0 0 50px #ecf4de; -webkit-box-shadow:inset 0 0 50px #ecf4de; box-shadow:inset 0 0 50px #ecf4de; This gives the box a nice gradient towards the center. However, Safari does not support the "inset" property and IE doesn't support box-shadow at all. I can't use an image for this because the height of this box changes for each situation. I don't want to use 3 images, (one for the top, a repeating one for the middle and one for the bottom), as this can get very messy code. So what I'm asking is if there is any way to produce the box shadow in all browsers.

  I have a portal based on a publishing portal. The portal (SPSite) contains has two websites (SPWebs) one is anonymously accessible and other one isn't. This works as expected. Now I want to set the permissions for some aspx page of the anonymously accessible website so that they are not visible for authenticated users. So it's actually the opposite of anonymous access. User that are not logged in should see the aspx pages and logged in user shouldn't. The aspx pages are normal publishing pages of the publishing portal. How could I archive this. Is this possible at all?

• How will a search engine read data from my Ajax-based webapp?

  OK, not entirely related to programming, so I'm sorry. But I'd like to know about this: So I've got a webapp. There's one column where a list of results are fetched from the database. When you click one, jQuery fetches the information associated with that result and puts it into the second column - all without a refresh and using Ajax. Is it possible for Google to still read it etc.? I understand it can follow links... but presumably not Javascript actions etc.? If this is the case, what do other Ajax-heavy websites do about search engine optimisation? Jack

It's a fairly big subject so am hoping somone on here as here as got some good reading materials on that cover these subjects. At this very moment in time, im reading this; Tutorial01 Its not much, but its a good starting point. I'm not a big fan MSDN and the way its structured and layout, I mainly use it for framework related questions like classes and interfaces and etc. WHen it comes to tutorials, i prefer thrid party websites. • Has there been a Firefox update recently?

  Trying again to ask a PROGRAMMING question because of the over-zealous closing off of what is equally a programming question before allowing the poster to clarify. The latest version of Firefox (v3.6.3) is breaking websites, mine included. I make heavy use of the Infragistic NetAdvantage controls. These, because of their heavy JavaScript reliance and occasional lack of quality control, tend to suffer through browser updates sometimes requiring a hotfix. So the question is... has there been a Firefox release recently that has either introduced a bug, tightening up of some standard, bug fix which might have broken a previous workaround (often the case) etc? I'm guessing around JavaScript but that's a guess hence the reason for asking a group of programmers...

• Interacting with RESTful API's via Javascript?

  Hi there, to start off, I know C++, C#, Python, some Ruby, and basic Javascript. Anyway, my question revolves around how to interact with RESTful API's via Javascript. I haven't been able to find any good examples on various websites, and so I've come here. So my basic question is: How do I interact with RESTful API's via JS? And where can I find out how to implement OAuth in JS? I know how to get my keys and such, just not how to actually code them in. Below is an example of a twitter API status update run from my MAC terminal with curl: curl -u username:password -d "my tweet" http://api.twitter.com/1/statuses/update.json How can I implement this in Javascript (preferably with OAuth authentication)? I'm trying to branch out to actual mobile development now, so I checked out Dashcode. Anyway, I'm trying to put a Call Button, Mail Button, and Map Button in horizontal alignment. • Why does Chrome ignore local jQuery cookies?

  I am using the jQuery Cookie plugin (download and demo and source code with comments) to set and read a cookie. I'm developing the page on my local machine. The following code will successfully set a cookie in FireFox 3, IE 7, and Safari (PC). But if the browser is Google Chrome AND the page is a local file, it does not work. $.cookie("nameofcookie", cookievalue, {path: "/", expires: 30}); What I know: The plugin's demo works with Chrome. If I put my code on a web server (address starting with http://), it works with Chrome. So the cookie fails only for Google Chrome on local files. Possible causes: Google Chrome doesn't accept cookies from web pages on the hard drive (paths like file:///C:/websites/foo.html) Something in the plugin implentation causes Chrome to reject such cookies Can anyone confirm this and identify the root cause?

  Hey there, Something I can't wrap my head around is how secure web services are. For example we're writing a desktop application that will interact with data on one of our websites as well as local data. This data is sensitive though and the last thing we want is anybody calling the web services. I've not yet found anything that says web services has some kind of authentication methods and the only security I've seen people talk about is using certificates to encrypt the message. I'm no guru on this and would appreciate anyone's input and perhaps a link to somewhere that will explain this in simple terms. Thanks Jacques

  Hi, i'm buidling a very simple email based website that users can, when registering list out all the stocktickers they're intersted in following. The program then on a daily basis goes and fetches that information and sends it out to every user. i have the portion which fetchs the information from the stock websites, but i'm looking for an "infrastructure" that allows: (a) a user to send an email to [email protected] with the subject "Subscribe" and with the body containing stockticker values, (b) user to send email to service@... with subject "unsubscribe" and body containing similar values.   I'm working with websites written in PHP, along with many other programmers, and sometimes I have to deal with really awful code. Indentation totally messed up, curly braces in the wrong places, terrible whitespace use, it really hurts my eyes and actually makes my work harder and take longer.   Do online programming tests have any value (except for providing an evidence to potential employers) in terms of evaluating your knowledge, or a they too broad or too narrow in general? For examples, brainbench.com and similar websites. From my experience I have never found myself scoring particularly high, although I have many years of commercial experience and is doing great at work. These tests mostly refer to things I have never worked with (WebForms or ADO .Net, who works with ADO .Net directly anyway?), yet these tests claim to be C# tests. If you were hiring a programmer, would you consider online tests as an evidence of real skill?
