Are there programs that iteratively write new programs?

For about a year I have been thinking about writing a program that writes programs. This would primarily be a playful exercise that might teach me some new concepts. My inspiration came from negentropy and the ability for order to emerge from chaos and new chaos to arise out of order in infinite succession. To be more specific, the program would start by writing a short random string. If the string compiles the programs will log it for later comparison. If the string does not compile the program will try to rewrite it until it does compile. As more strings (mini 'useless' programs) are logged they can be parsed for similarities and used to generate a grammar. This grammar can then be drawn on to write more strings that have a higher probability of compilation than purely random strings. This is obviously more than a little silly, but I thought it would be fun to try and grow a program like this. And as a byproduct I get a bunch of unique programs that I can visualize and call art. I'll probably write this in Ruby due to its simple syntax and dynamic compilation and then I will visualize in processing using ruby-processing. What I would like to know is: Is there a name for this type of programming? What currently exists in this field? Who are the primary contributors? BONUS! - In what ways can I procedurally assign value to output programs beyond compiles(y/n)? I may want to extend the functionality of this program to generate a program based on parameters, but I want the program to define those parameters through running the programs that compile and assigning meaning to the programs output. This question is probably more involved than reasonable for a bonus, but if you can think of a simple way to get something like this done in less than 23 lines or one hyperlink, please toss it into your response. I know that this is not quite meta-programming and from the little I know of AI and generative algorithms they are usually more goal oriented than what I am thinking. What would be optimal is a program that continually rewrites and improves itself so I don't have to ^_^

How to stop page refresh when hit enter button from rich:inputNumberSpinner field?

The problem is : I set cursor focus to inside of rich:inputNumberSpinner field, then i hit the enter button from my keyboard, that time page will be automatically refresh. But i don't need page refresh when i hit the enter button from my keyboard. Realtime Twitter Replies?

I have created Twitter bots for many geographic locations. I want to allow users to @-reply to the Twitter bot with commands and then have the bot respond with the results. I would like to have the bot reply to the user as quickly as possible (realtime). Apparently, Twitter used to have an XMPP/Jabber interface that would provide this type of realtime feed of replies but it was shut down. As I see it my options are to use one of the following: REST API This would involve polling every X minutes for each bot. The problem with this is that it is not realtime and each Twitter account would have to be polled. Search API The search API does allow specifying a "-to" parameter in the search and replies to all bots could be aggregated in a search such as "-to bot1 OR -to bot2...". Though if you have hundreds of bots then the search string would get very long and probably exceed the maximum length of a GET request. Streaming API The streaming API looks very promising as it provides realtime results. The API allows you to specify a follow and track parameters. follow is not useful as the bot does not know who will be sending it commands. track allows you to specify keywords to track. This could possibly work by creating a daemon process that connects to the Streaming API and tracks all references to the bot's names. Once again since there are lots of bots to track the length and complexity of the query may be an issue. Another idea would be to track a special hashtag such as #botcommand and then a user could send a command using this syntax @bot1 weather #botcommand. Then by using the Streaming API to track all references to #botcommand would give you a realtime stream of all the commands. Further parsing could then be done to determine which bot to send the command to. Third-party service Are there any third-party companies that have access to the Twitter firehouse and offer realtime data? I haven't investigated these, but here are a few that I have found: Gnip Tweet.IM excla.im TwitterSpy - seems to use polling, not realtime I'm leaning towards using the Streaming API. Is there a better way to get near realtime @-replies for many (hundreds) of Twitter accounts?

CSS Rollovers: how to maintain "hit area" size when hidden image is larger than anchor area

I have a small problem and I don't think what I want to do can be achieved with just pure CSS, but I figured I'd ask anyway. Basically, I have one DIV which contains a hyperlinked element that is smaller in size to it's parent DIV. So in effect I have a square within a square with the inner square being the "hit area". When I mouse over this inner square I want the background of the outer square to change. I know it's not possible to change the parent DIV's background on a:hover, but I figured I could give the illusion of it happening by nesting a hidden image inside the anchor. This works great until I want to "roll off". The problem is that I want the image to disappear when I leave the area of the anchor tag, not the larger hidden image. Is this possible? Included php file calling Javascript function

Hi there! Here's the deal. I've got index.php which links to an internal JS file in it's header. index.php then includes another .php file, which outputs this: + add file. addFile() is a Javascript function defined in the external JS file. By doing this nothing happens, the included php does not "see" the JS function. Encapsulating the JS in the included PHP makes it all work. But I don't want to do it that way. Any ideas? Parsing language for both binary and character files

The problem: You have some data and your program needs specified input. For example strings which are numbers. You are searching for a way to transform the original data in a format you need. And the problem is: The source can be anything. It can be XML, property lists, binary which contains the needed data deeply embedded in binary junk. And your output format may vary also: It can be number strings, float, doubles.... You don't want to program. You want routines which gives you commands capable to transform the data in a form you wish. Surely it contains regular expressions, but it is very good designed and it offers capabilities which are sometimes much more easier and more powerful. Something like a super-grep which you can access (!) as program routines, not only as tool. It allows: joining/grouping/merging of results inserting/deleting/finding/replacing write macros which allows to execute a command chain repeatedly meta-grouping (lists-tables-hypertables) Example (No, I am not looking for a solution to this, it is just an example): You want to read xml strings embedded in a binary file with variable length records. Your tool reads the record length and deletes the junk surrounding your text. Now it splits open the xml and extracts the strings. Being Indian number glyphs and containing decimal commas instead of decimal points, your tool transforms it into ASCII and replaces commas with points. Now the results must be stored into matrices of variable length....etc. etc. I am searching for a good language / language-design and if possible, an implementation. Which design do you like or even, if it does not fulfill the conditions, wouldn't you want to miss ? EDIT: The question is if a solution for the problem exists and if yes, which implementations are available. You DO NOT implement your own sorting algorithm if Quicksort, Mergesort and Heapsort is available. You DO NOT invent your own text parsing method if you have regular expressions. You DO NOT invent your own 3D language for graphics if OpenGL/Direct3D is available. There are existing solutions or at least papers describing the problem and giving suggestions. And there are people who may have worked and experienced such problems and who can give ideas and suggestions. The idea that this problem is totally new and I should work out and implement it myself without background knowledge seems for me, I must admit, totally off the mark.

CSS RGBA border / background alpha double

I'm working on a website that has a lot of transparency involved, and I thought I would try to build it entirely in RGBA and then do fallbacks for IE. I need a "facebox" style border effect, where the outer border is rounded and is less opaque than the background of the box it surrounds. The last example from http://24ways.org/2009/working-with-rgba-colour seems to suggest that it's possible, but I can't seem to get it to work. Thus, when both the background and the border are semi-transparent, the border will ALWAYS be more opaque than the background of the element. This is exactly the opposite of what I am trying to achieve, but it seems like it should be possible based on the examples I've seen. I should also add that I can't use another element inside the container, because I'm also going to use a border-radius on the container to get rounded corners, and webkit squares the corners of the child elements if they have a background assigned, which would essentially mean a rounded outer border with square contents. LINQ Query Returning Multiple Copies Of First Result

I'm trying to figure out why a simple query in LINQ is returning odd results. I have a view defined in the database. It basically brings together several other tables and does some data munging. It really isn't anything special except for the fact that it deals with a large data set and can be a bit slow. I want to query this view based on a long. Two sample queries below show different queries to this view. var la = Runtime.OmsEntityContext.Positions.Where(p => p.AccountNumber == 12345678).ToList(); var deDa = Runtime.OmsEntityContext.Positions.Where(p => p.AccountNumber == 12345678).Select(p => new { p.AccountNumber, p.SecurityNumber, p.CUSIP }).ToList(); The first one should hand back a List. The second one will be a list of anonymous objects. When I do these queries in entities framework the first one will hand me back a list of results where they're all exactly the same. The second query will hand me back data where the account number is the one that I queried and the other values differ. This seems to do this on a per account number basis, ie if I were to query for one account number or another all the Position objects for one account would have the same value (the first one in the list of Positions for that account) and the second account would have a set of Position objects that all had the same value (again, the first one in it's list of Position objects). I can write SQL that is in effect the same as either of the two EF queries. They both come back with results (say four) that show the correct data, one account number with different securities numbers. Why does this happen??? Is there something that I could be doing wrong so that if I had four results for the first query above that the first record's data also appears in the 2-4th's objects??? I cannot fathom what would/could be causing this. I've searched Google for all kinds of keywords and haven't seen anyone with this issue. We partial class out the Positions class for added functionality (smart object) and some smart properties. There are even some constructors that provide some view model type support. None of this is invoked in the request (I'm 99% sure of this). However, we do this same pattern all over the app. The only thing I can think of is that the mapping in the EDMX is screwy. Is there a way that this would happen if the "primary keys" in the EDMX were not in fact unique given the way the view is constructed? I'm thinking that the dev who imported this model into the EDMX let the designer auto select what would be unique. Any help would give a haggered dev some hope!

So I switched to using RestKit 0.2 and CoreData and I've been having a lot of trouble trying to get the mappings correct... I don't understand why. How do I add a trailing slash for Django MPTT-based categorization app?

I'm using Django-MPTT to develop a categorization app for my Django project. But I can't seem to get the regex pattern for adding a trailing slash that doesn't also break on child categories. Here's an example URL: http://mydjangoapp.com/categories/parentcat/childcat/ I'd like to be able to use http://mydjangoapp.com/categories/parentcat and have it redirect to the trailing slash version. The same should apply to http://mydjangoapp.com/categories/parentcat/childcat (it should redirect to http://mydjangoapp.com/categories/parentcat/childcat/). I asked this before and got no where so i'm asking again as i'm now desperate!! Difficulty adding widgets to django form.

I have a django app that tracks activities that can benefit a classroom. Using the django examples, I was able to build a form to enter this data. But when I try to add widgets to that form, things get tricky. What I want is a calendar widget that lets the user enter the 'activity_date' field using a widget. If I use Admin interface. The AdminDateWidget works fine. however. This particular user isn't allowed access to the admin interface so I need a different way to present this widget. Also I couldn't figure out how to make the bring the admin widget over into non-admin pages. So I tried a custom widget. This is the first custom widget I've built, so I'm not quite sure what is supposed to be going on here. Any Expert Advice? What I am getting from this is: deck = 22223333 new deck = deck = 2222 new deck = 7502 What I'm hoping to get is: deck = 22223333 new deck = deck = new deck = 23232323 (or any of the 8 numbers, generated randomly) So it should be shuffling those 8 cards, what am I doing wrong? I'm only new to javascript but I've used some python before. I've done something similar in python and worked perfectly, but I'm not sure what's wrong here. Thanks for any answers in advance!!

facebook app using fbml displays nothing

Maven2 not compiling source

Hi, I am new to Maven2 and have been having an issue with the compiling of the source for a RAR. Maven currently copies all the information located at my sourceDirectory instead of compiling it even though the console states that the source is being compiled. If I navigate to the sourceDirectory I find all my source files with no compiled class files. I have tried changing my outputDirectory to a different location and when I inspect this directory I find that it only copied my source files instead of compiling them. I have added an example of my POM. Windows 7 - pydoc from cmd

Okay, I'm having one of those moments that makes me question my ability to use a computer. This is not the sort of question I imagined asking as my first SO post, but here goes. Started on Zed's new "Learn Python the Hard Way" since I've been looking to get back into programming after a 10 year hiatus and python was always what I wanted. This book has really spoken to me. That being said, I'm having a serious issue with pydoc from the command. I've got all the directories in c:/python26 in my system path and I can execute pydoc from the command line just fine regardless of pwd - but it accepts no arguments. Doesn't matter what I type, I just get the standard pydoc output telling me the acceptable arguments. Any ideas? For what it's worth, I installed ActivePython as per Zed's suggestion. C:\Users\Chevee>pydoc file pydoc - the Python documentation tool pydoc.py <name> ... Show text documentation on something. <name> may be the name of a Python keyword, topic, function, module, or package, or a dotted reference to a class or function within a module or module in a package. If <name> contains a '\', it is used as the path to a Python source file to document. CSS Rollovers: how to main "hit area" size when hidden image is larger than anchor area

I have a small problem and I don't think what I want to do can be achieved with just pure CSS, but I figured I'd ask anyway. Basically, I have one DIV which contains a hyperlinked element that is smaller in size to it's parent DIV. So in effect I have a square within a square with the inner square being the "hit area". When I mouse over this inner square I want the background of the outer square to change. I know it's not possible to change the parent DIV's background on a:hover, but I figured I could give the illusion of it happening by nesting a hidden image inside the anchor. This works great until I want to "roll off". The problem is that I want the image to disappear when I leave the area of the anchor tag, not the larger hidden image. Is this possible? Phonegap web view thinks device screen taller than it is - results in offscreen tabbar

I have a jQTouch application loaded via server, so all I need to do is display the webpage full screen in PhoneGap for a faux-Native app. Unfortunatley each solution I've tried in PhoneGap has an issue: it thinks the screen size is taller than it is. This resuls in the tabbar that is pinned to the bottom being permantly offscreen and there fore unusable. You should be able to recreate this with my code below and going to the iTabbar online demo. Any thoughts on how to correct this issue? For background, going to the app page in iOS safari works fine, as well as saving the page to the home screen. In both cases the webview stops at the bottom of the screen and the tabbar is therefore viewable. Also, I'm using build.phonegap.com to compile (I'm not compiling locally) I've tried two methods: load the childBrowser plugin and call up the page (with navbar hidden via options) set the following config.xml parameter to prevent phonegap from switching to Safari, and then just load the link (preferable as it's cleaner in my mind.
