• PHP Installer Script

  I'm looking to create a fully functional installer for a slightly complicated web application using PHP. Basically, you go to URL/setup.php and you are asked a series of questions, and during the process a database is set up and a config file is populated according to the answers given. A good example of this is how Wordpress handles its install procedure, as well as any number of PHP applications. My question to you, oh great internet, is this: This technique is so prevalent that surely not everyone is re-inventing the wheel, is there a place I can go to find a basic walkthrough (not code, just a description) of the technique. Either that or a good book which outlines if not this specific technique, then the fundamentals relevant to this? I can bang out something ugly and probably make it work myself, but if there's a best known method I'd like to find it. Far more important than having a working function is to have a description of what's going on from step to step. I'd like to have the installer, but I really want to learn how it's done. • Most efficient way to update attribute of one instance

  Hi all - I'm creating an arbitrary number of instances (using for loops and ranges). At some event in the future, I need to change an attribute for only one of the instances. What's the best way to do this? Right now, I'm doing the following: 1) Manage the instances in a list. 2) Iterate through the list to find a key value. 3) Once I find the right object within the list (i.e. key value = value I'm looking for), change whatever attribute I need to change. for Instance within ListofInstances: if Instance.KeyValue == SearchValue: Instance.AttributeToChange = 10 This feels really inefficient: I'm basically iterating over the entire list of instances, even through I only need to change an attribute in one of them. Should I be storing the Instance references in a structure more suitable for random access (e.g. dictionary with KeyValue as the dictionary key?) Is a dictionary any more efficient in this case?   I thought it would be as easy as tell the for-each to only select top_coach_sales_vw that has "Site" equal to "PB" but when I run the script it does not loop through any of the data in the XML. • iPhone crashing when presenting modal view controller

• Can't get gravity to work with RMagick and 'caption'

  I'm using RMagick 2.12.2 with ImageMagick 6.5.6-10 on Snow Leopard. I'm trying to put captions on a collection of photos, and I'm getting the caption to work (i.e. it appears on the image), but I can't get the gravity parameter to work correctly. No matter what I set it to, I end up with some variation on NorthGravity. For instance: Setting it to SouthWestGravity gives me NorthWestGravity. Setting it to SouthEastGravity gives me NorthEastGravity. Setting it to CenterGravity gives me NorthGravity. In other words, I can't get the caption to come down off the top of the image. I'd consider using "annotate," but I need "caption" so the lengthy caption text for each image will wrap. What am I doing wrong? • How can I tell if a byte array has already been compressed?

  Hi, Can I rely on the first few bytes of data compressed using the System.IO.Compression.DeflateStream in .NET always being the same? These bytes seem to always be the 1st bytes: 237, 189, 7, 96, 28, 73, 150, 37, 38, 47 , ... I'm assuming this is some kind of header, I'd like to assume that this header is fixed and isn't going to change. Has anyone got any extra info about this? Background info (The reason I want to know this info is...) I have a load of data in a database table that could do with being made smaller. I've decided I'm going to start compressing the data and not going to bother compressing the existing data. When the data gets into my .NET code the data is a String. I'd like to be able to look at the 1st few bytes of the string and see if it has been compressed, if it has then I need to de-compress it. I was originally thinking I could convert the string to bytes and just try de-compressing the data. Then if an exception happens, I could just assume it wasn't compressed. But I think checking the header bytes would give me much better performance. Many thanks, Mike G

• Pipelining String in Powershell

  I'm trying to make a simple PowerShell function to have a Linux-style ssh command. Such as: ssh username@url I'm using plink to do this, and this is the function I have written: function ssh { param($usernameAndServer) $myArray = $usernameAndServer.Split("@") $myArray[0] | C:\plink.exe -ssh $myArray[1] } If entered correctly by the user, $myArray[0] is the username and $myArray[1] is the URL. Thus, it connects to the URL and when you're prompted for a username, the username is streamed in using the pipeline. Everything works perfectly, except the pipeline keeps feeding the username ($myArray[0]) and it is entered as the password over and over. Example: PS C:\Users\Mike> ssh xxxxx@yyyyy login as: xxxxx@yyyyy's password: Access denied xxxxx@yyyyy's password: Access denied xxxxx@yyyyy's password: Access denied xxxxx@yyyyy's password: Access denied xxxxx@yyyy's password: Access denied xxxxx@yyyyy's password: FATAL ERROR: Server sent disconnect message type 2 (protocol error): "Too many authentication failures for xxxxx" Where the username has been substituted with xxxxx and the URL has been substituted with yyyyy. Basically, I need to find out how to stop the script from piping in the username ($myArray[0]) after it has been entered once. Any ideas? I've looked all over the internet for a solution and haven't found anything.

  I've recently downloaded Entity Framework Code First CTP5, and have a trouble with this scenario. I've also tried to use OnModelCreating on the TestContext, but can't find any good instructions and don't know what to do. I saw a blog post of the EF Code First CTP3, and it seems there was a RelatedTo attribute in that version, but now it has gone. Could anyone know how to get it work properly?   Hi, I’m facing an issue with NHibernate performance and can you please suggest me some optimizations? Below mentioned is a small summary of my application architecture I have a windows service which is listening to a messaging bus. On receiving a message the service creates an object out of which a property is the received xml snippet and saves the message to the DB (uses NH). There is a WPF UI with a readonly connection to the DB, and on refresh of the UI it displays the objects on the screen. While the UI does a refresh, it retrieves the xml and deserializes it , from which the object’s properties are derived and binded to the screen. For example assume an xml XXX is received by the service, it deserializes the xml , creates the book object and save it to the DB and a property/column is SCHEMA which contains the xml snippet. The UI while refreshed searches all book objects by ID and creates the book objects out of the xml which is being saved (yes, the xml is the constructor param). Now my issue is that the refresh takes more than 2 minutes to display say 50 book objects. I analyzed it using the NHibernate profiler, and found that the time spend within the DB is negligible, however time spent to create the entities is proportionally huge(10ms:1990 ms).I guess it’s due to the fairly huge size of xml snippet and it’s deserialization. My question is, how can I improve the performance. I dispose sessions after every refresh and is not lazy loading (please note that the time spend in DB is negligible). On every refresh it’s possible that all objects are updated by some downstream systems or maybe one of them are updated.Can I implement some sort of caching mechanism in this case? • JQM Nested Popups

  I am having a hard time with the new Alpha release of JQM not showing nested popups. For example, I am displaying a popup form that the user is supposed to fill out, if the server side validation fails, I want to display an error popup. I am finding that the error popup is not being shown. However, having logged in as the users myself, the messages cannot be found either through searching or by browsing the folder detailed in the log entry. The server returns the following error to the client: "The message could not be retrieved using the IMAP4 protocol. The message has not been deleted and may be accessible using either Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Office Outlook Web Access. You can also try contacting the original sender of the message to find out about the contents of the message. Retrieval of this message will be retried when the server is updated with a fix that addresses the problem." Messages were transferred in to Exchange by copying them from the old Apple Xserve, accessed using IMAP. So my question, finally: 1. Is there any way to get the IMAP Exchange connector to rebuild its cache of messages since it doesn't seem to be pulling them directly from the MAPI store? 2. • Exchange IMAP4 connector - Error Event ID 2006

  A couple of users in my organisation use IMAP4 to connect to Exchange 2007 (Update rollup 9 applied) because they prefer Thunderbird / Postbox clients. One of the users is generating errors in the Application Log as follows: An exception Microsoft.Exchange.Data.Storage.ConversionFailedException occurred while converting message Imap4Message 1523, user "*******", folder *********, subject: "******", date: "*******" into MIME format. However, having logged in as the users myself, the messages cannot be found either through searching or by browsing the folder detailed in the log entry. The server returns the following error to the client: "The message could not be retrieved using the IMAP4 protocol. The message has not been deleted and may be accessible using either Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Office Outlook Web Access. You can also try contacting the original sender of the message to find out about the contents of the message. Retrieval of this message will be retried when the server is updated with a fix that addresses the problem." Messages were transferred in to Exchange by copying them from the old Apple Xserve, accessed using IMAP. So my question, finally: 1. Is there any way to get the IMAP Exchange connector to rebuild its cache of messages since it doesn't seem to be pulling them directly from the MAPI store? 2. Alternatively, if there is no database, any ideas on why these messages don't appear in Outlook or OWA would be gratefully received. Many thanks, Mike

• Truncate text to fit table cell without wrapping using css or jquery

  I want the text in one of the columns of a table to not wrap, but to just truncate so that it fits within the current size of the table cell. I don't want the table cell to change size, as I need the table to be exactly 100% the width of the container. This is because the table with 100% width is inside of a positioned div with overflow: auto (it's actually inside of a jquery UI.Layout panel). I tried both overflow: hidden and the text still wrapped. My use case is similar to the gmail interface, where an email subject is bolded and the beginning of the message body is shown, but then truncated to fit.

• Linq to List and IEnumerable issues

  I am querying an HTML file with Linq. But it kicks the error: Unable to cast object of type 'WhereSelectEnumerableIterator2[System.Xml.Linq.XElement,System.Collections.Generic.IEnumerable1[Players]]' to type 'System.Collections.Generic.IEnumerable`1[Players]' As you can see, I may really have no idea how to work with all these objects/classes. Does anyone have any insight on what I may be doing wrong and how I can resolve it? • Using XMLDecoder to cast Encoded XML to List<>

  I am writing an application that reads in a large number of basic user details in the following format; once read in it then allows the user to search for a user's details using their email: NAME ROLE EMAIL --------------------------------------------------- Joe Bloggs Manager [email protected] John Smith Consultant [email protected] Alan Wright Tester [email protected] ... The problem I am suffering is that I need to store a large number of details of all people that have worked at the company. The file containing these details will be written on a yearly basis simply for reporting purposes, but the program will need to be able to access these details quickly. The way I aim to access these files is to have a program that asks the user for the name of the unique email of the member of staff and for the program to then return the name and the role from that line of the file. I've played around with text files, but am struggling with how I would handle multiple columns of data when it comes to searching this large file. What is the best format to store such data in? A text file? XML? The size doesn't bother me, but I'd like to be able to search it as quickly as possible. The file will need to contain a lot of entries, probably over the 10K mark over time. EDIT: I've decided to go with the XML serialisation method. I've managed to get the code for Encoding working perfectly, but the Decoding code below does not work. I've added a bounty to this and anyone that can help me solve this problem once and for all will get lots of lovely points. EDIT 2: I've looked a bit more into the problem and have come across Serialization as a potential answer. If anyone can look into this for me as I've no experience with Serialization or Deserialization I'd be very grateful. It can provide an Object with no problems whatsoever, but I really need to return it in the same format as it went in (List). EDIT 3: Ugh, this problem is really starting to drive me crazy and to be honest I'm starting to think that it's an unsolvable problem. If possible, could someone take a look at the code and help provide a solution for me?

• C# and NpgsqlDataAdapter returning a single string instead of a data table

  I have a postgresql db and a C# application to access it. I'm having a strange error with values I return from a NpgsqlDataAdapter.Fill command into a DataSet. However, if instead of doing a select on all (*) if I try to name individual columns to return from the query I get the information I asked for, but rather than being split up into seperate entries in the data table I get a string in the first index of the data table that looked something like: "(0,5,false,Bob Smith,7)" And the data is correct, I would be expecting 0, then 5, then a boolean, then some text etc. But I would (obviously) prefer it to not be returned as just one big string. Anyone know why if I do a select on * I get a datatable as expected, but if I do a select on specific columns I get a data table with one entry that is the string of the values I'm asking for?

• jquery data selector

  I need to select elements based on values stored in an element's .data() object. At a minimum, I'd like to select top-level data properties using selectors, perhaps like this: $('a').data("category","music"); $('a:data(category=music)'); Or perhaps the selector would be in regular attribute selector format: $('a[category=music]'); Or in attribute format, but with a specifier to indicate it is in .data(): $('a[:category=music]'); I've found James Padolsey's implementation to look simple, yet good. The selector formats above mirror methods shown on that page. There is also this Sizzle patch. For some reason, I recall reading a while back that jQuery 1.4 would include support for selectors on values in the jquery .data() object. However, now that I'm looking for it, I can't find it. Maybe it was just a feature request that I saw. Is there support for this and I'm just not seeing it? Ideally, I'd like to support sub-properties in data() using dot notation. Like this: $('a').data("user",{name: {first:"Tom",last:"Smith"},username: "tomsmith"}); $('a[:user.name.first=Tom]'); I also would like to support multiple data selectors, where only elements with ALL specified data selectors are found. The regular jquery multiple selector does an OR operation. For instance, $('a.big, a.small') selects a tags with either class big or small). I'm looking for an AND, perhaps like this: $('a').data("artist",{id: 3281, name: "Madonna"}); $('a').data("category","music"); $('a[:category=music && :artist.name=Madonna]'); Lastly, it would be great if comparison operators and regex features were available on data selectors. So $(a[:artist.id>5000]) would be possible. I realize I could probably do much of this using filter(), but it would be nice to have a simple selector format. What solutions are available to do this? Is Jame's Padolsey's the best solution at this time? My concern is primarily in regards to performance, but also in the extra features like sub-property dot-notation and multiple data selectors. Are there other implementations that support these things or are better in some way?

• Advice on displaying and allowing editing of data using ASP.NET MVC?

  I am embarking upon my first ASP.NET MVC project and I would like to get some input on possible ways to display database data and general best practice. In short, the body of my webpage will show data from my database in a table like format, with each table row showing similar data. For example: Name Age Position Date Joined Jon Smith 23 Striker 18th Mar 2005 John Doe 38 Defender 3rd Jan 1988 In terms of functionality, primarily I’d like to give the user the ability to edit the data and, after the edit, commit the edit to the database and refresh the view.The reason I want to refresh the view is because the data is date ordered and I will need to re-sort if the user edits a date field. My main question is what architecture / tools would be best suited to this fulfil my requirements at a high level? From the research I have done so far my initial conclusions were: ADO.NET for data retrieval. This is something I have used before and feel comfortable with. I like the look of LINQ to SQL but don’t want to make the learning curve any steeper for my first outing into MVC land just yet. Partial Views to create a template and then iterate through a datatable that I have pulled back from my database model. jQuery to allow the user to edit data in the table, error check edited data entries etc. Also, my intial view was that caching the data would not be a key requirement here. The only field a user will be able to update is the field and, if they do, I will need to commit that data to the database immediately and then refresh the view (as the data is date sorted). Any thoughts on this? Alternatively, I have seen some jQuery plug-ins that emulate a datagrid and provide associated functionality. My first thoughts are that I do not need all the functionality that comes with these plug-ins (e.g. zebra striping, ability to sort by column using sort glyph in column headers etc .) and I don’t really see any benefit to this over and above the solution I have outlined above. Again, is there reason to reconsider this view? Finally, when a user edits a date , I will need to refresh the view. In order to do this I had been reading about Html.RenderAction and this seemed like it may be a better option than using Partial Views as I can incorporate application logic into the action method. Am I right to consider Html.RenderAction or have I misunderstood its usage? Hope this post is clear and not too long. I did consider separate posts for each topic (e.g. Partial View vs. Html.RenderAction, when to use jQury datagrid plug-in) but it feels like these issues are so intertwined that they need to be dealt with in contect of each other. • Looking for efficient scaling patterns for Silverlight application with distributed text-file data s

  I'm designing a Silverlight software solution for students and teachers to record flashcards, e.g. words and phrases that students find while reading and errors that teachers notice while teaching. Requirements are: each person publishes his own flashcards in a file on a web server, e.g. http://:www.mywebserver.com/flashcards.txt other people subscribe to that person's flashcards by using a Silverlight flashcard reader that I have developed and entering the URLs of flashcard files they want to subscribe to, URLs and imported flashcards being saved in IsolatedStorage the flashcards.txt file has the following simple format: title, then blocks of question/answers: Jim Smith's flashcards from English class 53-222, winter semester 2009 ==fla Das kann nicht sein. That can't be. ==fla Es sei denn, er kommt nicht. Unless he doesn't come. The user then makes public the URL to his flashcard file and other readers begin reading in his flashcards. In order to lower the bar for non-technical users to contribute, it will even be possible for them to save this text in a Google Document, which they publish and distribute the URL. The flashcard readers will then recognize it is a google document and perform the necessary screen scraping to get at the raw text. I have two technical questions about this approach: What is a best way to plan now for scalability issues: e.g. if your reader is subscribed to 10 flashcard files that are each 200K, it will have to download 2MB of text just to find out if any new flashcards are available. Or can I somehow accurately and consistently get at the last update date/time of text files on servers and published google docs? Each reader will have the ability to allow the person to test himself on imported flashcards and add meta information to them, e.g. categorize them, edit them, etc. This information will be stored in IsolatedStorage along with the important flashcards themselves. What is a good pattern to allow these readers to share and synchronize this meta data, e.g. so when you are looking at a flashcard you can see that 5 other people have made corrections to it. The best solution I can think of now is that the Silverlight readers will have to republish their data to a central database, but then there is the problem of uniquely identifying each flashcard, the best approach seems to be URL + position-in-file, or even better URL + original text of both question and answer fields, but both of these have their obvious drawbacks. The main requirement is that the bar for participation is kept as low as possible, i.e. type text in a google document, publish it, distribute the URL, and you're publishing within the flashcard community. So I want to come up with the most efficient technical solutions in order to compensate for the lack of database, lack of unique ids, etc. For those who have designed or developed similar non-traditional, distributed database projects like this, what advice, experience or best-practice tips you can share on the above two points?
