• Why doesn't Gradle include transitive dependencies in compile / runtime classpath?

  I'm learning how Gradle works, and I can't understand how it resolves a project transitive dependencies. For now, I have two projects : projectA : which has a couple of dependencies on external libraries projectB : which has only one dependency on projectA No matter how I try, when I build projectB, gradle doesn't include any projectA dependencies (X and Y) in projectB's compile or runtime classpath. I've only managed to make it work by including projectA's dependencies in projectB's build script, which, in my opinion does not make any sense. These dependencies should be automatically attached to projectB. I'm pretty sure I'm missing something but I can't figure out what. I've read about "lib dependencies", but it seems to apply only to local projects like described here, not on external dependencies. • 11gr2 DataGuard: Restarting DUPLICATE After a Failure

  One of the great new features that comes in very handy when databases get larger and larger these days is RMAN's capability to duplicate from an active database and even restart a duplicate when it fails. Imagine yourself the problem I had lately; I used the duplicate from active database feature and had to wait for an hour or 6 before all datafiles where transferred.At the end of the process some error occurred because of the syntax. While this error was easily to solve I was afraid I had to redo the complete procedure and transfer the 2.5 TB again. Well, 11gr2 RMAN surprised when I re-ran my command with the following output: Using previous duplicated file +DATA/fin2prod/datafile/users.2968.719237649 for datafile 12 with checkpoint SCN of 183289288148 Using previous duplicated file +DATA/fin2prod/datafile/users.2703.719237975 for datafile 13 with checkpoint SCN of 183289295823 Above I only show a small snippet, but what happend is that RMAN smartly skipped all files that where already transferred ! The documentation says this: RMAN automatically optimizes a DUPLICATE command that is a repeat of a previously failed DUPLICATE command. The repeat DUPLICATE command notices which datafiles were successfully copied earlier and does not copy them again. This applies to all forms of duplication, whether they are backup-based (with and without a target connection) or active database duplication. The automatic optimization of the DUPLICATE command can be especially useful when a failure occurs during the duplication of very large databases. If a DUPLICATE operation fails, you need only run the DUPLICATE again, using the same parameters contained in the original DUPLICATE command. Please see chapter 23 of the 11g Release 2 Database Backup and Recovery User's Guide for more details. B.w.t. be very careful with the duplicate command. • VSDB to SSDT part 3 : command-line deployment with SqlPackage.exe, replacement for Vsdbcmd.exe

  For our continuous integration needs, we use a powershell script to handle deployment. A simpler approach would be to have a deployment task embedded within the build process. See the solution provided here by Jakob Ehn (a most interesting read which also dives into the '”deploying from Visual Studio” specifics) : http://geekswithblogs.net/jakob/archive/2012/04/25/deploying-ssdt-projects-with-tfs-build.aspx   For our needs, though, clearly separating our build phase from our deployment phase is important. It allows us to instantly deploy old versions. Also it is more convenient for continuous integration. So we stick with the powershell script approach. With VSDB projects, that script used to call the following command (the vsdbcmd executable was locally available, along with needed libraries): vsdbcmd.exe /a:Deploy /dd /cs:<CONNECTIONSTRING TO TARGET DB> /dsp:SQL /manifest:< PATH TO .deploymanifest FILE>   To be able to do the approximately same thing with a SSDT produced file (dacpac), you would call this command on a machine which has VS2012 installed (or the SSDT installed, see here : http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh500335%28v=vs.103%29):   C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\110\DAC\bin\SqlPackage.exe /Action:Publish /SourceFile:<PATH TO Database.dacpac FILE> /Profile:<PATH TO .publish.xml FILE>   And from within a powershell script :   & "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\110\DAC\bin\SqlPackage.exe" /Action:Publish /SourceFile:<PATH TO Database.dacpac FILE> /Profile:<PATH TO .publish.xml FILE>   The command will consume a publish.xml file where the connection string and the deployment options are specified. • SQL SERVER – 2011 – Multi-Monitor SSMS Windows

  I have a dual screen arrangement at my home system. I love it because it’s very convenient. When I am working with SQL Server 2008 R2 or any earlier versions, I would want to use both of the Monitor so I open two separate SQL Server Management Studio and work along with it. I have no complaints with my system, at all. I am totally fine with it. However, sometimes I face small issues, like when I just want a small code open in a separate window but I do not want the windows to take over the whole of another window. But then again, I am already used to this current system. Recently when I was working with SQL Server 2011 ‘Denali’ CTP1, I dragged one of the windows by accident, and suddenly it magically appeared out of its ‘Shell’ of SSMS and was appearing on a separate monitor. I played around a bit and figured out that SSMS now supports multi-monitor (or multi screen) support with single SSMS instance. We can now drag out and drag in any window and resize them at any size. Fantastic! If you are multi-monitor user, I am sure you will like this feature. This leads me to ask you question? Do you use multi-monitor system while working with SQL Server? • Do I need path finding to make AI avoid obstacles?

  How do you know when a path-finding algorithm is really needed? There are contexts, where you just want to improve AI navigation to avoid an object, like a space -ship that won't crash on a planet or a car that already knows where to steer, but needs small corrections to avoid a road bump. As I've seen on similar posts, the obvious solution is to implement some path-finding algorithm, most likely like A*, and let your AI-controlled object to navigate through the path. Now, I have the necessary skills to implement a path-finding algorithm, and I'm not being lazy here, but I'm still a bit skeptical on if this is really needed. I have the impression that path-finding is appropriate to navigate through a maze, or picking a path when there are many alternatives. But in obstacle avoidance, when you do know the path, but need to make slight corrections, is path finding really necessary? Even when the obstacles are too sparse or small ? I mean, in real life, when you're driving and notice a bump on the road, you will just have to pick between steering a bit on the left (and have the bump on your right side) or the other way around. You will not consider stopping, or going backwards. A path finding would be appropriate when you need to pick a route through the city, right ? So, are there any other methods to help AI navigation, except path-finding? And if there are, how do you know when path-fining is the appropriate algorithm ? Thanks for any thoughts

• Macedonian Code Camp 2011

  Autumn was filled with lot of conferences, events, speaking engagements and many interesting happenings in Skopje, Macedonia. First at October 20, I was speaking at Microsoft Vizija 9 on topic ASP.NET MVC3 and Razor. One week ago, November 15 I was speaking for first time on topic not related to web development (but still deployment of web apps was part of the demos) on topic “Cloud Computing – Windows Azure” at Microsoft BizSpark Bootcamp. The next event, which is the biggest event by the number of visitors and number of tracks is the Code Camp 2011 event. After we opened the registrations for the event, we sold out (free) 600 tickets in the first 15 hours! We all got astonished by the extremely big number of responses we’ve got… In this event, I can freely say that we expect about 700 attendees to come, and we already have 900+ registered. The event will be held at Saturday, 26 November 2011. At Code Camp 2011, I will speak on topic ASP.NET MVC Best Practices. There are many interesting things to say on this presentation, I will mainly focus on Tips, Tricks, Guidelines and other Practices that I have been using in real-life projects developed by using ASP.NET MVC Framework, with special focus on ASP.NET MVC3 and the next release, ASP.NET MVC4 Developer Preview. There are big number of known local and regional speakers, including 7 MVPs. • Can defect containment metrics be readily applied at an organizational level when there is only a consistant organizational process framework?

  Defect containment metrics, such as total defect containment effectiveness (TDCE) and phase containment effectiveness (PCE), can be used to give a good indicator of the quality of the process. TDCE captures the defects that are captured at some point between requirements and the release of a product into the field, indicating the overall effectiveness of the entire process to find and remove defects. PCE provides more detail at each phase of the software development life cycle and how the defect detection and removal techniques are working. Applying these metrics makes sense at a level where you have a well-defined process and methodology for product development, often a project. However, some organizations provide a process framework that is tailored at the project level. This process framework would include the necessary guidance for meeting certifications (ISO9001, CMMI), practices for incorporating known good techniques (agile methods, Lean, Six Sigma), and requirements for legal or regulatory reasons. However, the specific details of how to gather requirements, design the system, produce the software, conduct test, and release are left to the product development teams. Is there any effective way to apply defect containment metrics at an organizational level when only a process framework exists at the organizational level? If not, what might be some ideas for metrics that can be distilled from each project (each using a tailored process that fits into the organizational process framework) that captures defect containment metrics to discuss the ability of the process to find and remove defects? The end goal of such a metric would be to consolidate the defect containment practices of a large number of ongoing projects and report to management. The target audience would be people in roles such as the chief software engineer and the chief engineer (of all engineering disciplines) for the organization. Although project specific data would be available, the idea is to produce something that quantifies the general effectiveness of all tailored processes across all ongoing projects. I would suspect that this data would also be presented as part of CMMI, ISO, or similar audits to demonstrate process quality.

• Is there a distributed project management software like Redmine?

  I am quite familiar with and love using git, among other reasons due to its distributed nature. Now I'd like to set up some similarly distributed (FOSS) Project Management software with features similar to what Redmine offers, such as Issue & time tracking, milestones Gantt charts, calendar git integration, maybe some automatic linking of commits and issues Wiki (preferably with Mathjax support) Forum, news, notifications Multiple Projects However, I am looking for a solution that does not require a permanently accesible server, i.e. like in git, each user should have their own copy which can be easily synchronized with others. However it should be possible to not have a copy of every Project on every machine. Since trac uses multiple instances for multiple projects anyway, I was considering using that, but I neither know how well it adapts to simply giting the database itself (which would be be easiest way to handle the distribution due to git being used anyway), nor does it include all of Redmine's feature. So, can you recommend me a distributed project management software? If your suggestion is a software that usually runs on a server please include a description of the distribution method (e.g. whether simply putting the data in a git repository would do the trick), and if it's e.g. trac, please mention plugins required to include the features mentioned.

There I enjoyed being father, rolling on the floor and playing with my daughter. • Can I trust the Basic schedule equation?

  I've been reading Steve McConnell's demystifying the black art of estimating book, and he gives an equation for estimating nominal schedule based on Person-months of effort: ScheduleInMonths = 3.0 x EffortInMonths ^ (1/3) Per the book, this is very accurate (within 25%), although the 3.0 factor above varies depending on your organization (typically between 2 and 4). It is supposedly easy to use historical projects in your organization to derive an appropriate factor for your use. I am trying to reconcile the equation against Agile methods, using 2-6 week cycles which are often mini-projects that have a working deliverable at the end. If I have a team of 5 developers over 4 weeks (1 month), then EffortInMonths = 5 Person Months. The algorithm then outputs a schedule of 3.0 x 5^(1/3) = 5 months. 5 months is much more than 25% different than 1 month. If I lower the 3.0 factor to 0.6, then the algorthim works (outputs a schedule of approx 1 month). The lowest possible factor mentioned in the book through is 2.0. Whats going on here? I want to trust this equation for estimating a "traditional" non-agile project, but I cannot trust it when it does not reconcile with my (agile) experience. Can someone help me understand?

  This is my first job as a programmer.I am working on ASP.NET/C#,HTML,CSS,Javascript/Jquery. I am working for a firm which develops software for small banking firms. Currently they have their software running in 100 firms.Their software is developed in Visual Fox Pro. I was hired to develop online version of this software.I am the solo developer. My boss is another developer.So my company has two developers. My boss doesnot have any idea about .NET development.I am working on their project since 8 months.The progress is surely there but not very big. I try my best to do what my boss asks.But the project just seems too ambitious for me. The company doesnot have any planning for the project.They just ask me to develop what their older software provides.So I have to deal with front end , back end,review codes , design architecture and etc. I have decided to give my best.I try a lot.But the project sometimes just seems to be overwhelming. So my questions is , is it normal for a programmer to be in this place. I always feel the need to work in atleast a small team if not big one. Are my employers just expecting too much of a fresher.Or is that I being a programmer am lacking the skills to deal with this. I am just not able judge my condition.Also I am paid very low salary.I do work on saturday as well. Can anyone just help me judge this scenario? Any suggestions are welcome.

• How do web-developers do web-design when freelancing?

  So I got my first job recently as junior web-developer. My company creates small/medium sites for wide variety of customers: autobusiness companies, weddign agencies, some sauna websites, etcetc, hope you get my point. They don't do big serious stuff like bank systems or really big systems, it's mostly small/medium-sized websites for startups/medium sized business. My main skills are PHP/MySQL, I also know HTML and a bit of CSS/JS/AJAX. I know that good web-developer must know some backend language (like PHP/Ruby/Python) AND HTML+CSS+JS+AJAX+JQuery combo. However, I was always wondering. In my company we have web-designer. In other serious organisations I often see the same stuff: web-developers who create business-logic and web-designers, who create design. As far as I know, after designers paint design of website they give it to developers either in PSD or sliced way, and developers put it together with logic, but design is NOT created by developers. Such separation seems very good for full-time job, but I am concerned with question how do freelance web-developers do websites? Do most of them just pay freelance designers to create design for them? Or do some people do both? Reason why I ask - I plan to start some freelancing in my free time after I get good at web-development. But I don't want to create websites with great business-logic but poor design. Neither I want to let someone else create a design for me. I like web-development very much and I am doing quite good, I like design aswell, even though I am a bit lost how to study it and get better at it. But I am scared that going in both directions won't let me become expert, it seems like two totally different jobs and getting really good in both seems very hard. But I really want to do both. What should I do? Thank you!

• Copy Formatting in Word

  Many a times you may need to copy the "Format" in Word. The "Copy Format" feature lets you quickly and easily "copy" all the formatting characteristics from one group of selected text to another. This is helpful when you have several headings that you want consistent formatting. Here are steps on how to Copy Formatting: 1. Select, or highlight, the item of text containing the format you wish to copy. 2. Office 2003 - Click on the Format Painter Button in the Standard Toolbar (looks like Paintbrush). Office 2007 - Format Painter Button is located on the Home tab (looks like a Paintbrush). Office 2003 - An I-beam with a small cross to the left will appear as you move your mouse. Office 2007 - An I-beam with a small paintbrush will appear as you move your mouse. 3. Select the text you wish to copy the formatting to. 4. Formatting of the selected text will automatically change. For multiple formatting changes, double-click on the Format Painter button in Step 2. Remember, you'll have to click it again to deselect it or press Esc.

• What build tools do not depend on java (or Ruby)?

  I'm wondering what generic build tools out there include their binary run-times and do not depend on another environment not shipped with them. For example, ANT requires Java, Rake requires Ruby, etc.. would be great if talking about also target-platform-agnostic tools, where I'd just give whatever command for building, whatever command for testing, etc.. and can then define my artifacts in CI or so. Would see something like that useful for building .NET projects (say, on both Windows .NET and Mono), and Node JS projects especially. I do not want to install Java and / or Ruby if what I want is a .NET build or a Node JS build. This is a bit of general awareness question not an exact problem I'm facing, that's why it's here not on StackOverflow. Update: To explain a bit more, what I'm after is the build script that would run MSBuild for compiling for example ( in .NET, and then maybe several Node/NPM commands in Node, etc..), and then have the rest build/test steps, instead of setting these all in MSBuild (again, in .NET case, also, wondering if there is equivalent story in Node).
