We are debating on having a CLA for contributors. Do you think mandating a CLA will reduce the number of contributors?   Late last night I got to record an interview with Conor Cunningham.Most people that know Conor have come across him as the product team wizard that knows so much about query processing and optimization in SQL Server. Conor is currently spending quite a lot of time working on Windows Azure SQL Database, which we used to know as SQL Azure. I'm still trying to think of a good way to say "WASD". I suppose I'll pronounce it like "wassid". Windows Azure SQL Reporting is easier. I think it just needs to be pronounced like "wazza" with a very Australian accent.In the show, we've spent time on the current state of the platform, on dispelling a number of common misbeliefs about the product, and hopefully on answering most of the common questions that seem to get asked about it. How can you account for one engineer being 10,000 times more productive? I can't quite fathom this, given they're both taking on their share of features, bugs and investigations, and consistently deliver with quality. Would my description possibly justify them to be above "average"? "great"? In a corporation like Microsoft, what % of software engineers are "average"? What % "great"?

  I am writing a report which requires the analysis of performance of each individual team member. This is for a software development project developed using the Unified Process (UP). I was just wondering if there are any existing group & individual appraisal metrics used so I don't have to reinvent the wheel... EDIT This is by no means correct but something like: Individual Contribution (IC) = time spent (individual) / time spent (total) = Performance = ? (should use individual contribution (IC) combined with something to gain a measure of overall performance).... Maybe I am talking complete hash and I know generally its really difficult to analyse performance with numbers but any mathematicians out there that can lend a hand or know a somewhat more accurate method of analysing performance than arbitrary marking (e.g. 8 out 10)

• Exposing warnings\errors from data objects (that are also list returned)

  I'm exposing Data objects via service oriented assembly (which on future usages might become a WCF service). The data object is tree designed, as well as formed from allot of properties.Moreover, some services return one objects, others retrieve a list of them (thus disables throwing exceptions). I now want to expose data flow warnings and wondering what's the best way to do it having to things to consider: (1) seperation (2) ease of access. On the one hand, i want the UI team to be able to access a fields warnings (or errors) without having them mapping the field names to an external source but on the other hand, i don't want the warnings "hanged" on the object itself (as i don't see it a correct design). I tought of creating a new type of wrapper for each field, that'll expose events and they'll have to register the one's they care about (but totally not sure) I'll be happy to hear your thoughts. Could you please direct me to a respectful design pattern ? what dp will do best here ? Thank you very much!

  I'm a software developer, currently working on web development. We are a small company a team with 2 persons, a developer and a designer and we have no-one to test our applications. From the last week I was somehow rushed to finish a task within a project programmed by someone else and I released it with a bug which I did not see. Today I got the last warning and if there is a release with a bug I will be fired. So is this fair enough to get fired because releases with bugs without any testers around or should I really improve my skills on testing?

  Sometimes a Weblogic Server will be unreachable, there could be several reasons, the server is hang, down, and thus not responding to a ping, or it could be related to a network issue.A possible point of failure in the network layer are firewalls. You should contact your network team if you have following messages: java weblogic.Admin -adminurl t3://adminServer.mydomain.com:7777 -username admin -password lockdown PINGFailed to connect to t3://adminServer.mydomain.com:7777: Destination unreachable; nested exception is:java.net.SocketException: Connection reset; No available router to destination A possible work around for the ping command is to use the HTTP protocol, instead of the t3 protocol. To enable this you must configure WebLogic to do HTTP tunneling. To enable, access the administration console, click servers-> server you want to reach-> protocols -> http -> enable Tunneling. no restart is necessary. And then, following command will work: java weblogic.Admin -adminurl http://adminServer.mydomain.com:7777 -username igmadmin -password l0ckdown PING

Today we give our first technical session, Oracle Optimizer: Harnessing the Power of Optimizer Hints (Session CON8455) at 1:15pm, in Moscone South - room 103. In this session we will discuss in detail how Optimizer hints are interpreted, when they should be used, why they appear to be ignored and what you can do if you have inherited a hint ridden application. The Optimizer team will also be at the Oracle Database Demogrounds all day.  Demogrounds open at 9:45 am and run until 6pm. • svn vs git for the sole developer? [closed]

  If I am sole developer (I do not work in a team) working from my laptop (Windows OS and Linux VM) and backing up data to the cloud (Dropbox etc), then is git still better than svn for my version control needs? I was thinking not since I wont need any of git's distributed features. But is git such a better approach to version control that I should consider moving anyway? With so many articles saying how people are moving from svn to git? I was wondering, if they are talking about large or open projects with teams of developers vs the sole developer. What do you think?

  End user documentation on how to use applications is an important part of the user experience of applications, irrespective of whether they are winforms, wpf or even asp applications. In a startup or internal development team situation, where there isn't a dedicated documentation department, it can take a lot of resources to maintain screen shots and associated user documentation, such as on-line help or even printable manuals. What tools are available to assist in creating screenshots of all the "screens" within an application (be they winforms, wpf or aspx) to help automate the capture of screen shots, and associating with the relevant documentation? In addiiton, are there any that allow automation of annotations of a particular control (so use cases like: Draw a red box around the Username control with a callout to say "This is where you'd enter your user name, in the form '[email protected]'")?

• Community Day at SOS Kinderdorf Bambous

  Easter is not only an occassion of public holidays but an opportunity to share and celebrate with your neighborhood. The team of IOS Indian Ocean Software Ltd. spent Easter Monday with the children and "mothers" of SOS Children's Village in Bambous. Together with the employees' family members we enjoyed some wonderful hours together. Starting the community day with a common lunch, IOS contributed mainly stationery, educational gifts and games like Scrabble or Sudoku. And of course, a little give-away with chocolate eggs... The kids are aged between 5 and 18 years. They live together with their village mothers in so-called family houses. The SOS Kinderdorf in Bambous is quite new and started their operations back in 2003, with an official inauguration in May 2005. Actually, I'm really happy about this event and I am looking forward to IOS next community activity. • Funky Behavior NoTracking Query Entities

  I’ve been using a lot of NoTracking queries to grab lists of data that I don’t need change tracked. It enhances performance and cuts down on resources. There are some nuances about these entities, however. One of the interesting behaviors of EF4’s Lazy Loading is that even if you have entities that you have queried with NoTracking on, they will still lazy load related entities. Unless you’ve read this somewhere (it’s on the ADO.NET team’s blog post which introduces...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?   Thanks to all the nice comments from people who attended my presentation at DDD9, and extra thanks to Jon Skeet, Mark Rendle and Mike Hadlow for coming on stage for the last ten minutes to help debate whether the Async CTP is the correct way to go to enhance C# 5.0. • List of eCommerce sites that use end-to-end SSL?

  My development team is considering implementing an eCommerce site using end-to-end SSL -- that is, every page on the site is accessed via an https:// URL -- rather than the more traditional "mixed mode" where most pages are accessed via http:// and only "secure" pages such as login and credit card entry are redirected to https://. Pros of doing such a "pure SSL" approach include avoidance of some session-hijacking attacks such as Firesheep; cons include performance considerations. My question is: Is anyone aware of a list of eCommerce websites (especially USA-based sites), or even specific websites, that use this end-to-end SSL approach? I'm especially interested in "regular" eCommerce sites rather than banks or other "financial" sites.

• Understanding the Java Ecosystem

  I have traditionally had the "luxury" of being a one-man development team. I've used Python extensively, have a reasonable command of Perl, PHP, and JavaScript. My problem is Java. I can write Java code. I'm not great at it--unlike Python, I rarely make use of anything unique to Java when I'm writing it. Furthermore, my experience is mostly in simple GUI/console programming. Unfortunately, I'm currently pursuing an IT degree where Java is the lingua franca. My database class is requiring that our projects be written in Java using servlets, and I just can't wrap my head around the ecosystem. Is there a good online overview of or tutorial on how the Java web ecosystem works? I have Thinking in Java, but it's mostly just the language itself (which I understand well enough to get by). I have looked at the Sun servlet tutorial, but it seems outdated.

• Valentine's Day in sunny Ottawa, Ontario

• What's the best version control/QA workflow for a legacy system?

  I am struggling to find a good balance with our development and testing process. We use Git right now, and I am convinced that ReinH's Git Workflow For Agile Teams is not just great for capital-A Agile, but for pretty much any team on DVCS. That's what I've tried to implement but it's just not catching. We have a large legacy system with a complex environment, hundreds of outstanding and undiscovered defects, and no real good way to set up a test environment with realistic data. It's also hard to release updates without disrupting users. Most of all, it's hard to do thorough QA with this process... and we need thorough testing with this legacy system. I feel like we can't really pull off anything as slick as the Git workflow outlined in the link. What's the way to do it?

A popular CMS that could be up to date over the next 3 or 4 years. I took a look at Drupal 7.
