I had a question whether a developer requires an iphone to actually work with or is there any other simulator type device where we can test it out too. • i = true and false in Ruby is true?

    - by alex
Am I fundamentally misunderstanding Ruby here? I've been writing Ruby code for about 2 years now and just today stumbled on this... ruby-1.8.7-p249 > i = true and false => false ruby-1.8.7-p249 > i => true Could somebody explain what's going on here please? I'm sure it's to spec, but it just seems counter intuitive to me...

  • xargs command works on ubuntu, but not mac

    - by Corey Hart
I have the following line of code that I use to update my personal date variable in my projects to todays current date. This line works in Ubuntu's terminal, but the Mac terminal seems to be far behind. Unfortunately, I copied this snippet from some site, so I'm not sure how it exactly works. Suggestions? grep -ilr --exclude=revar.sh --exclude=README.md "[DATE]" * | grep -v .git | xargs -i@ sed -i "s/\[DATE\]/${today}/g" @

  • Why should i learn C++.

    - by Babiker
Everyone has been telling me to learn C++. Without bashing languages right and left, can someone please state some relevant reasons as to why I should learn C++ today? Note that in no way am I saying anything harsh about C++. I just want to know why I should master it as a programmer instead of the other powerful languages out there.

  • Is Microsoft Workflow Foundation really used ?

    - by ereOn
Today, I had a training on "Microsoft Workflow Foundation". While I think the idea is neat, I still see it as a Proof Of Concept and not as a real-life solution. Building an entire application without having to type a single line of code (or only a few of them) seems just wrong. Have you ever used this technology and if so, can it really fit to big company projects ? What drawbacks/advantages have you got using it ?

  • SQL Server Maximum row size

    - by DannySmurf
Came across this error today. Wondering if anyone can tell me what it means: Cannot sort a row of size 9522, which is greater than the allowable maximum of 8094. Is that 8094 bytes? Characters? Fields? Is this a problem joining multiple tables that are exceeding some limit?

  • How to get a list of the latest revision number for each file in a Mercurial repository?

    - by Kimble
I have made a build system for my web application that's rewriting all resource url's to include the file's revision number (to improve client caching). As of today I'm running this command for each file to get the revision number: hg log --template '{rev}\n' path-to-file Executing hg for each file is really time consuming. Is there a fast way to list all files in a repository with the latest revision number?

  • sapply and concurrency in R

    - by JSmaga
Good afternoon, Somebody asked me a question today and neither did I know the answer nor could I find it in the documentation. This person simply asked me if the sapply function in R was making concurrent calls to the function you want to apply to the list, or if the computation is done sequantially. Does anybody know the answer? What about rapply (the recursive version of this function)? Thanks, Jeremie

  • Getting a date value in a postgres table column and check if it's bigger than todays date

    - by Roland
I have a Postgres table called clients. The name column contains certain values eg. test23233 [987665432,2014-02-18] At the end of the value is a date, I need to compare this date, and return all records where this specific date is younger than today I tried select id,name FROM clients where name ~ '(\d{4}\-\d{1,2}\-\d{1,2})'; but this isn't returning any values. How would I go about to achieve the results I want?

  • Is the moq project dead? Is it wise for me to invest in learning it?

    - by NimsDotNet
I am fairly new to mocking frameworks and was trying to decide which one will be a good bet to start working on. I have been looking at this question about the best mocking framework, and I can see a lot of people preferring moq, but when i saw the moq project's change list, i can see that it has not been updated for almost an year now. Is moq project dead? if yes, which will be a good mocking framework to start with today?

  • Hiernate's version values in Grails app

    - by xain
Hi, looking at a database dump file, and I see many records in various tables with their version number set in values other than 0 (even 94 in one case). I understand it has to do with hibernate locking strategy, but my concern is that today is Sunday, and the site has almost no visitors so is: is this normal ? Or is there a known hibernate bug or even some programming malpractice producing this ? Thanks in advance.

  • Why does this compile?

    - by akf
I was taken aback earlier today when debugging some code to find that something like the following does not throw a compile-time exception: public Test () { HashMap map = (HashMap) getList(); } private List getList(){ return new ArrayList(); } As you can imagine, a ClassCastException is thrown at runtime, but can someone explain why the casting of a List to a HashMap is considered legal at compile time?
