  hi, i need to run a really long php script (four and half, five hours). the script sometimes runs successfully, but sometimes gets killed inexplicably (poss something to do with the shared hosting??). i think that the solution maybe to run the script is smaller chunks. in order to do this i have written a script that stores it's status & position in an xml file, and executes one chunk of the script, before moving the position on. i am having problems hooking up the last bit of the script, which should end the current process & re-execute the script. or maybe i am barking up the wrong tree completely! i have read through what i can find on SO and elsewhere but i'm still none the wiser :( please help!!! dan

• How do you deal with naming conventions for rails partials?

  For example, I might have an partial something like: <div> <%= f.label :some_field %><br/> <%= f.text_field :some_field %> </div> which works for edit AND new actions. I also will have one like: <div> <%=h some_field %> </div> for the show action. So you would think that all your partials go under one directory like shared or something. The problem that I see with this is that both of these would cause a conflict since they are essentially the same partial but for different actions so what I do is: <!-- for edit and new actions --> <%= render "shared_edit/some_partial" ... %> <!-- for show action --> <%= render "shared_show/some_partial" ... %> How do you handle this? Is a good idea or even possible to maybe combine all of these actions into one partial and render different parts by determining what the current action is?

• Is Lightweight Code Generation (LCG) dead?

  In the .NET 2.0-3.5 frameworks, LCG (aka the DynamicMethod class) was a decent way to emit lightweight methods at runtime when no class structure was needed to support them. In .NET 4.0, expression trees now support statements and blocks, and as such appear to provide sufficient functionality to build just about any functionality you could require from such a method, and can be constructed in a much easier and safer way than directly emitting CIL op-codes. (This statement is borne from today's experimentation of converting some of our most complex LCG code to use expression tree building and compilation instead.) So is there any reason why one would use LCG in any new code? Is there anything it can do that expression trees cannot? Or is it now a 'dead' piece of functionality?

  Hey all, Looking at the E4X implementation in ActionScript, it occurs to me that they had to figure out how to do three things that I am not sure can be done within ActionScript regularly: Properties/Getters prefixed with @: var myAttribute = xmlPerson.@name; Nameless functions for filtering: xmlData.person.(/* predicate */) lambda syntax for predicates: xmlData.person.(@name == "Brian") So here is my question: Are these just one-off capabilities (much like Vector.<>) they put in just for E4X, therefore keeping out of reach for us? Or do we, as ActionScript developers, have access to these features? More specifically, I'd love to get access to the expression tree of that lambda predicate for my own code (not tied to the XML classes in any way). I figured out that this is called the "filter operator"... but I am not sure how to harness it. Not sure I can... since ActionScript does not allow for operator overloading :(

• Walking a hierarchy table with Linq

  I have a table with two columns, GroupId and ParentId (both are GUIDS). The table forms a hierarchy so I can look for a value in the “GroupId” filed, when I have found it I can look at its ParentId. This ParentId will also appear in the GroupId of a different record. I can use this to walk up the hierarchy tree from any point to the root (root is an empty GUID). What I’d like to do is get a list of records when I know a GroupId. This would be the record with the GroupId and all the parents back to the root record. Is this possible with Linq and if so, can anyone provide a code snippet?

• How do you access config outside of a request in CherryPy?

  I've got a webapp running on CherryPy that needs to access the CherryPy config files before a user creates a request. The docs say to use: host = cherrypy.request.app.config['database']['host'] But that won't work outside of a user request. You can also use the application object when you start the app like so: ... application = cherrypy.tree.mount(root, '/', app_conf) host = application.config['database']['host'] ... But I can see no way of accessing 'application' from other classes outside of a user request. I ask because our app looks at several databases and we set them up when the app starts rather than on user request. I have a feeling this would be useful in other places too; so is there any way to store a reference to 'application' somewhere or access it through the CherryPy API?

• Detach subdirectory into separate Git repository

  I have a Git repository which contains a number of subdirectories. Now I have found that one of the subdirectories is unrelated to the other and should be detached to a separate repository. How can I do this while keeping the history of the files within the subdirectory? I guess I could make a clone and remove the unwanted parts of each clone, but I suppose this would give me the complete tree when checking out an older revision etc. This might be acceptable, but I would prefer to be able to pretend that the two repositories doesn't have a shared history. Just to make it clear, I have the following structure: XYZ/ .git/ XY1/ ABC/ XY2/ But I would like this instead: XYZ/ .git/ XY1/ XY2/ ABC/ .git/

• Handling Data Hierarchies in code

  Hi there So, say I have a string to parse with a given format that maps to a tree like data structure. The string is kinda similar to a folder path, and the structure is similar to a file structure, except its got some rules so for something@cat1@otherSomething you would get /something/cat1/otherSomething for something@cat2@otherSomething you would get /something/cat2/otherSomething other examples /OtherThing/cat1/otherSomething/Blah /OtherThing/cat4/otherSomething Where something, cat1, otherSomethign, etc are some sort of instances of ICategory There are certain rules that control what subcategories are valid and which subcategories are not acceptable, at the moment I m considering a heavy Object hierachy, but I know this is not a flexible solution, I d prefer the categories to be a bit more general but again, since there are rules about what can go next I m not sure how to do this. An example of a rule can be: OtherThing can only have subcategories cat1 and cat4 ( anything else is invalid) An option would be to use some sort of convention based aproach to instantiate a particular class given a subsection of the string(like cat4) but it seems a bit too complex, I m all ears Thanks

• How do I flag a folder as being a package?

  I used to think that folders needed to have an extension so that they are recognized as packages by the Finder. That extension would be declared in the owning application's Info.plist. Obviously there is another, more elegant way, but I can't figure out how it is done. E.g. the iPhoto Library is being treated as a package by the Finder. Yet it has no extension. mdls reveals that it indeed has "com.apple.package" in the content type tree. The actual content type is dynamically assigned. How did iPhoto go about to create such a directory?

  Hi, How can GQL support ORDER BY when it does not support aggregation? The question is - if say the result of the query is more than 1000, does ORDER BY return fully ordered list or only the first 1000 items which is then ordered? To explain the question more: is conceptually MIN() same as query.orderby('asc').fetch(1)? If it is properly ordering the list, then how can it not provide COUNT(), since to properly order the list, GQL possibly has to parse through the whole list - in which case, COUNT() is not an issue at all? Or is item indexed and kept in some type of tree so that it does not need to parse it all the time?

• Sql Server Compact Edition version error.

  I am working on .NET ClickOnce project that uses Sql Server 2005 Compact Edition to synchronize remote data through the use of a Merge replication. This application has been live for nearly a year now, and while we encounter occasional synchronization errors, things run quite smoothly for the most part. Yesterday a user reported an error that I have never seen before and have yet to find any information for online. Many users synchronize every night, and I haven't received error reports from anyone else, so this issue must be isolated to this particular user / client machine. Here are the full details of the error: -Error Code : 80004005 -Message : The message contains an unexpected replication operation code. The version of SQL Server Compact Edition Client Agent and SQL Server Compact Edition Server Agent should match. [ replication operation code = 31 ] -Minor Error : 28526 -Source : Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition -Numeric Parameters : 31 One interesting thing that I've found is that his data does get synchronized to the server, so this error must occur after the upload completes. I have yet to determine whether or not changes at the server are still being downloaded to his subscription. Thinking that maybe there was some kind of version conflict going on, I had a remote desktop session with this user last night and uninstalled both the application and the SQL Server Compact Edition prerequisite, then reinstalled both from our ClickOnce publication site. I also removed his existing local database file so that upon synchronization, an entirely new subscription would be issued to him. Still his errors continue. I suppose the error may be somewhat general, and the text in the error message stating that the versions should match may not necessarily reflect the problem at hand. This site contains the only official reference to this error that I've been able to find, and it offers no more detail than the error message itself. Has anyone else encountered this error? Or at least know more about SQL Compact to have a better guess as to what is going on here? Any help / suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

  Hey, I'm making an e-shop and to display the tree of categories and all the products with their multiple variations of prices I made like more than 150 mysql_query("SELECT ..."); queries on one page. (If I count the "while" loops). Is it too many, and if yes, can it have any negative effect? (ofc. it takes longer to load the data ..)   Hi, Does anyone know of a solid C# library / approach to manage a hierarchy/web type collection? This would be a library that would basic consist of the concept of nodes & relationships, for example to model web pages/files linked under a URL, or modeling IT infrastructure. It would have key methods such as: Node.GetDirectParents() Node.GetRootParents() Node.GetDirectChildren() Node.GetAllChildren() So it's smarts would include the ability to "walk the tree" of nodes based on the relationships when someone does ask for "give me all the children under this node" for example. It ideally include a persistence layer, to save/retrieve such data to/from a databases (e.g. with a Nodes and Relationships table). Thanks

• simple EJB jar deployed in jboss with its own log4j configuration

  Hi All I have a simple EJB jar with a stateless session bean, deployed in JBOSS AS 4.2.2, unde r/server/default/deploy. The bean is registered under JNDI tree as viewed from jboss jmx console and I am able to access it through a remote java client outside JBOSS. Inside EJB jar, I have added some logging to be written to a separate log file, using apache log4j jar and log4j.xml. But I am not able to view any of the logs. Also I do not wish to use jboss-log4j.xml, since there will be many other EJBs to be deployed and wish to have separate log4j for each EJB application. Here is my one of the EJB-jar contents: EJB_DS.jar: log4j.xml classes apache log4j jar is added to /server/default/lib path.   Hi I need to have objects sorted by price (decimal) value for fast access. I need to be able to find all objects with price more then A or less than B. I was thinkg about SortedList, but it does not provide a way to find ascending or descending enumerator starting from given key value (say give me all objects with price less than $120). Think of a system that accepts items for sell from users and stores them into that collection. Another users want to find items cheaper than $120. Basically what i need is tree-based collection and functionality to find node that is smaller\greater\equal to provided key. Please advice.

• Compiling a click-once app that requires administrator?

  Hi, a lot of my programs require the ability to write files to the hard drive. When I first made these programs for XP they worked great. Now I'm less ignorant about UAC (got a new laptop recently). And for future customers...I've noticed the potential for a LOT of annoying error messages....and quite frankly if the program can't write data to the hard drive or thumb drive it's on...there's no point to running it.... I've tried multiple times to build in the manifest a requirement for administrator or user access....I'm not sure if anything less would solve the problem...but have failed because click-once has security features in place to prevent me from doing so. I'd rather not have to tell my customers how to make the program run as an administrator by editing the file's properties...I'd much rather have a convenient pop up like what you'd see new programs such as Itunes or Filezilla show if they were in conflict with UAC requesting the privileges they need. I'd really like to do this but have had little success. Any and all advice that can remedy this grievous problem appreciated. Thanks.

  Hi there, I've accidentally copied a large part of a folder tree from my SVN working copy to my shared Windows web host via FTP. The site is now littered with .svn directories and and I need some way of cleaning them. The only access I have to the server is via FTP, or by running a script on the server. Does any one have a script which can be run remotely to remove the files over FTP from my development machine (any language Windows/Linux is fine) or a script in ASP, ASP.net or PHP I can run directly on the Windows server to remove these directories?   Hi, Can somebody tell me how to rename the DB server instance name and a DB name in MSSQL 2005? Right Now I Have SERVER/OLDNAME -- oldnameDB I want to change the server instance and also change the db name. I have tried: EXEC sp_renamedb 'oldName', 'newName' and that has changed the dbname as it appers in the tree directory. But, when I do "select @@servername" it is the old name. Also, the MDF and LDF files are still the old name. How do change instance and db names as a clean sweep across the server? Thanks.

• C / JSON Library in popular Linux distros?

  I have a program written in C that has to input and output JSON over a local domain socket. I've found several C / JSON libraries that 'almost work' through searches. Prior to taking one of the libraries that I found .. I want to be sure that I'm not over-looking a library that is commonly found on modern Linux distros. I'd also really appreciate links to libraries that you use. Most likely, I'll just drop it in tree, unless I realize that I've over looked something widely distributed. I am tagging this as subjective because the answer that I select is the one linking to a library that works for me, that does not mean its the 'best' library. I want to take an existing array and easily convert it to a buffer that can be sent, or take a buffer and easily convert it into an allocated array. Thanks in advance!
