• JavaOne Latin America Schedule Posted

  The official schedule for JavaOne Latin America 2012 is now posted. For the folks that are not yet aware, JavaOne Latin America is to be held on 4-6 December at the Transamerica Expo Center in São Paulo, Brazil. As you can expect there are keynotes, technical sessions, hands-on labs and demos led by Java luminaries from Brazil, Latin America and across the globe. There's tons of good stuff on Java EE and GlassFish. Arun Gupta will be delivering the Java technical keynote alongside the likes of Judson Althoff, Nandini Ramani, Georges Saab, Henrik Stahl, Simon Ritter and Terrence Barr. • Upcoming events : OBUG Connect Conference 2012

  The Oracle Benelux User Group (OBUG) have given me an amazing opportunity to present a one day Optimizer workshop at their annual Connect Conference in Maastricht on April 24th. The workshop will run as one of the parallel tracks at the conference and consists of three 45 minute sessions. Each session can be attended stand alone but they will build on each other to allow someone new to the Oracle Optimizer or SQL tuning to come away from the conference with a better understanding of how the Optimizer works and what techniques they should deploy to tune their SQL. Below is a brief description of each of the sessions Session 7 - 11:30 am Oracle Optimizer: Understanding Optimizer StatisticsThe workshop opens with a discussion on Optimizer statistics and the features introduced in Oracle Database 11g to improve the quality and efficiency of statistics-gathering. The session will also provide strategies for managing statistics in various database environments. Session 27 -  14:30 pm Oracle Optimizer: Explain the Explain PlanThe workshop will continue with a detailed examination of the different aspects of an execution plan, from selectivity to parallel execution, and explains what information you should be gleaning from the plan. • Is it possible to keep nm-applet running between invocations of WM startup?

  I am using nm-applet to interface with NetworkManager, running xmonad as a window manager. My X sessions (including nm-applet) are set up with a /usr/local/bin/xmonad.start script. My question is, how can I keep nm-applet running in the background as long as X is running, but not necessarily xmonad? As mentioned above, it is being started with xmonad (and dying with it when xmonad is restarted, etc). I am using gdm to manage my X sessions, and I'm running 10.10. Where's a good place to start nm-applet to suit my particular needs? I need to remove it from the control of xmonad, but don't know where to start it otherwise. Any help, tips, etc appreciated. Edit: problem seems to be with how I have integrated xmonad. • ADF Faces Skin Editor - How to Work with It

  The ODTUG Kscop11 conference was a great success with lots of sessions about FMW running in a special track. I did several sessions and labs in the conference, and I thought it might be a good idea to at least give you a taste of what you might have missed. So here is most of what I demoed in my ADF Faces Skinning session (not all though - that session was 60 minutes long, and while everyone did end up going out of the building in the middle because of a fire drill for about 5 minutes, there was other things covered in the session as well). In the demo here you'll see how to generate new images and default color scheme, how to identify a component class with Firebug, how to skin a component, how to identify the global selector of a property, how to change fonts and how to change strings. By the way, for more on ADF Skinning you should also listen to the ADF Insider seminar that Frank Nimphius recorded on skinning, it will give you better understanding of the overall skinning process. P.S. in the demo I add an entry to the web.xml file which prevent ADF Faces from compressing the HTML that is generated. The entry is for org.apache.myfaces.trinidad.DISABLE_CONTENT_COMPRESSION  and I set it to true. This is very useful when you work on creating the skin, but don't forget to un-set it before you go production.

• Graph data structures and journal format for mini-IDE

  Background: I am writing a small/partial IDE. Code is internally converted/parsed into a graph data structure (for fast navigation, syntax-check etc). Functionality to undo/redo (also between sessions) and restoring from crash is implemented by writing to and reading from journal. The journal records modifications to the graph (not to the source). Question: I am hoping for advice on a decision on data-structures and journal format. For the graph I see two possible versions: g-a Graph edges are implemented in the way that one node stores references to other nodes via memory address g-b Every node has an ID. There is an ID-to-memory-address map. Graph uses IDs (instead of addresses) to connect nodes. Moving along an edge from one node to another each time requires lookup in ID-to-address map. And also for the journal: j-a There is a current node (like current working directory in a shell + file-system setting). The journal contains entries like "create new node and connect to current", "connect first child of current node" (relative IDs) j-b Journal uses absolute IDs, e.g. "delete edge 7 - 5", "delete node 5" I could e.g. combine g-a with j-a or combine g-b with j-b. In principle also g-b and j-a should be possible. [My first/original attempt was g-a and a version of j-b that uses addresses, but that turned out to cause severe restrictions: nodes cannot change their addresses (or journal would have to keep track of it), and using journal between two sessions is a mess (or even impossible)] I wonder if variant a or variant b or a combination would be a good idea, what advantages and disadvantages they would have and especially if some variant might be causing troubles later.

• Review of TechEd 2012 - so far

  Disclaimer: probably going to next years TechEd.  (but not 100% sure) As with most TechEd's, this is not one of the best - but it's not bad.  Some impressions so far: The food is not bad, through perhaps not as much choice as in previous years.  The snacks, while a bit limited, are at least available.  The alumni lounge is ok, through perhaps not as good as last years.  Wifi is a bit worse than previous years - not really working in the big room, and a bit sporadic in the rest of the building. The device seems to make a big difference - the iPad seems to connect the easiest, while the iPhone & Lumia 800 are really struggling.  The real problem is the content - not as developer focused as in previous years.  This shows up in a number of different ways, for example while there is a visual studio booth, there is not much sign of anybody from the language teams.  This is one of few TechEd's where I don't feel very surprised about anything - seen most of the developer stuff in previews. One example where I was surprised was the pre-conf on c++ - its been years since I did any c++, but based on that session perhaps I should start again. While there are sessions, I'm not finding my schedule very challenged. For each time-slot there only seems to 1, or rarely 2, interesting sessions.  The focus seems to be on windows 8, Azure and the phone, which while interesting (might give win8 a go), are not enough.

• Legacy Code Retreat Questions

  I recently heard of the concept of a Legacy Code Retreat. Since I have attended and helped facilitate some normal Code Retreats I thought it might be interesting in trying a Legacy Code Retreat, but I have a few questions on how a legacy CR differs from a normal one. If anyone has attended a Legacy CR and has some suggestions on how best to host these event’s please leave a comment on what has worked for you in the past or if you have any answers to my questions below… Should you restrict the languages that people can do the sessions in? In the normal CR’s I have been involved in the past we have had people attend and code in their programming language of choice. A normal CR lends itself to  this because each session starts with no code. With a legacy CR each session seems to start with an existing code base. Is there some sort of limitation on the languages that people can work in during the sessions? If not, how do you give them a base to start from? What happens as the beginning of each session? In the normal CR that I have attended each session would have a constraint set on it – i.e. no if statements used, no primitives, etc. With a legacy CR it seems more like patterns for refactoring are learned. Does the facilitator explain the pattern used before the session starts or are they just given a code base to start from and an objective to achieve

• How should I determine if a user is logged in graphically while lightdm is running?

  I want to know if someone is logged into a local X-session. In the past I looked at the output of ck-list-sessions. • 10.04 Window manager not working

  Using an old mx200 128Mb AGP card. Log in ok. Sometimes the top and bottom bars do not appear, sometimes one sometimes both sometimes none. The menus on firefox/thunderbird and others disappear when I move the pointer from the menu heading to the menu itself. I can't play you tube videos, nor pacman, so the world has ended as I know it. If I type sudo metacity --replace in a terminal the window manager seems to work fine. But I don't know how to make this permanent. One option was: System menupreferencessessions In the sessions tab make sure that "automatically save changes to session" is checked. I don't have a sessions option in the preferences menu. So...? Must be a line of code in a terminal I can use to get round this. I have not upgraded to Ubuntu 11... because the graphics card is so old that I cannot get any decent screen resolutions when I do. On 10.04 I disable the Nvidia driver for the same reason and use 1024x768. Ta

  I can't believe it's time for OpenWorld again! Oracle OpenWorld is the largest gathering of Oracle customers, partners, developers, and technology enthusiasts. This year it will take place between September 30th and October 4th in San Francisco. Of course, the Optimizer development group will be there and you will have multiple opportunities to meet the team, in one of our technical sessions, or at the Oracle Database demogrounds. This year the Optimizer team has 2 technical sessions, as well as a booth in the Oracle Database demogrounds. Tuesday, October 2nd at 1:15pm Oracle Optimizer: Harnessing the Power of Optimizer Hints Session CON8455 at Moscone South - room 103 In this session we will discuss in detail how optimizer hints are interpreted, when they should be used, and why they sometimes appear to be ignored. Thursday, October 4th at 12:45pm Oracle Optimizer: An Insider’s View of How the Optimizer Works Session CON8457 at Moscone South - room 104This session explains how the latest version of the optimizer works and the best ways you can influence its decisions to ensure you get optimal execution every time. It will also include a full history of the Cost Based Optimizer, so make sure you stick around for this one! If you have burning Optimizer or statistics related questions, or if you just want to pick up an Optimizer bumper sticker, you can stop by the Optimizer demo booth. This year we are located in booth 3157, in the Database area of the demogrounds, in Moscone South. • Deal Registration Moves to Oracle Partner Store (OPS)- The Four Action Items for Partners

  In November 2012, Oracle’s partner deal registration process will move to the Oracle Partner Store (OPS). During this time, OPS will become the single source for partners to register deals, obtain deal status, and place orders. What will partners need to do? 1. Request an OPS Account – If your company is new to OPS the first thing you need to do is request an account (if your company already has an OPS account, go to step 2). It’s important to have the person who will be managing your OPS account make this request as soon as possible. They will be set up as your company’s primary administrator. 2. Set-Up Users in OPS – Setup of users can start immediately, and will be handled by the primary OPS administrator at your company. The process is simple, but all existing users of Global PRM (Partner Relationship Management) deal registration will need to be set up in OPS before November 14, 2012.  3. Review/Action Any Registrations Pending Submission in PRM – Prior to November 14, 2012, all pending registrations should be submitted in the existing PRM system. It is important that this step is complete so registrations will not need to be re-entered when the system is moved to OPS on November 17, 2012. Registrations pending submission are easily identified on the registration listing screen with either “Incomplete” or “Returned to Partner” in the status column.  4. Attend Training – Oracle will offer multiple VAD and VAR training sessions beginning October 29, 2012. It is recommended that all users attend one of these important sessions.  Detailed instructions on each of these tasks can be found on the OPS Information Page.
