• Display aspect ratio problem on netbooks?

  Last night in a computer store with the midnight sale of Windows 7, I see many netbooks, all are 1024 x 600 resolution. Then when the CPU meter and the Clock gadget were added, the CPU meter looked spherical, but the clock (the second clock -- the silver one) looked somewhat oval. Later on I went to all the desktops and both the CPU meter and the clock were spherical. So do the netbook have this "aspect ratio" problem? It is not a big deal but it'd be nice to know if I get a netbook and know that it is common on the netbook. (and aware that the picture and photos will be slightly distorted). Update: All the netbooks were at 1024 x 600, which was their "native" resolution. Every single one of them showed an oval shaped clock. None of the desktop had that issue.

• Options for gaming remotely on a LAN?

  I have a Windows 7 desktop for gaming, a big bulky tower with a nice graphics card. I'd like to sit out on my porch rather than inside while the weather is nice and play games. I have a high end Macbook Pro. What are my options? I figure either remote desktop over the LAN on the Macbook or maybe wireless video, keyboard and mouse. Something so I don't have to physically move the PC. The sort of games range from things like Skyrim to SW:TOR to Torchlight 2. What are my options? They have to do a better than running Boot Camp on the Macbook (MacBookPro8,1 i7 2.7 Ghz but Intel Graphics 3000). I realize there's a lot of issues involved in running a game over a remote desktop with a decent frame rate, I'm interested in a practical answer with real experience behind them. Ideally something that works on a OS X so I don't have to reboot into Windows.

• What is a good programmer's desk? [closed]

  I'm building a home office and looking for the ultimate desk. Lot's of resources about the great desk chairs, but very little on great modern desks. Requirements: Straight. No side cabinets. Attractive. Electric adjustable would be nice, but I haven't found very attractive looking one. The one recommended in this thread is pretty ugly. The Herman Miller Sense desk looks nice. Big fan of Herman Miller after my Aeron and Mirra. Does anyone have any experience with their desks? EDIT: Thanks all for the advice. I ended up just going with the Galant after seeing it and the Herman Miller's in person. What a great desk!

• Is there any way to do 'software raid' without losing data?I

  I say software raid because that is a pretty tentative guess at what I actually want. I have two drives, both with stuff already on them which I want to combine. If they weren't full of stuff (data, not windows installation) I would use software raid to combine them into one big drive or make them into one partition. I could probably do this with some complicated reference system but really I just want to be able to keep saving things to X: without running out of space until both drives are full. • Dialog box in Adobe reader is scrambled

  I use win 7 and Adobe reader 11. After updating from ADobe reader 9 to 10 (automatically) I can´t see a proper dialog boxx when i print the PDF. EIther it har veryyyyy big letters or the text is missing in the Printing option box. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall several times, but there is no difference. I have also tried to download the sherife sans font. When I hade Adoobe reader 8, there was no problem. On an other computer I had the same problem, but I could resolve it by uninstalling and reinstallation Adobe reader. Rutred

• Which OS/distributions have 64-bit kernel and 32-bit userspace? [closed]

  Which OS (or distributions) comes with 64-bit kernels (x86_64, SPARC64, PPC64, ..smth else?..) and 32-bit userland? I want all small userspace programs (like ls, cat, etc) to be 32-bit, because they really no needs to be 64-bit. But OS kernel must be 64bit for using =3 Gb of RAM. Also database programs (when using a lot of memory) can be 64bit. 64bit mode can hurt some programs, makes them bigger, eating (wasting) memory on pointers (especially in big abstract datatypes like list, tree, etc). 64 bit programss WASTES twice memory on EACH Pointer. I don't want it. And the Question is not "Are the 32-bit programs needed when 64-bit porcessor is available". Question is "What OS comes with 32 bit userspace and kernels in 32/64 bit mode". Examples of such OS includes: Solaris/SPARC64, MACOSX/X86_64 (10.5)/....

• selective backup script in bash

  Hi, I've been using this simple command (that's all I can do :) to backup the whole tree from my user data in NAS server for a year. cp -r /STORAGE /BACKUP-STORAGE/YYYY-MM-DD Unfortunately, after a year of service. My user start filling the spaces with lot of photo and cliparts (jpg, gif, bmp) And that start to make my backup process get much slower. The space is also a big issue. Now I no longer have enough space for a week-long daily backup set. I think I want to change from backup everything to backup only non-image data. How can I exclude jpg, gif, and bmp from the backup ? It's quite easy with DOS XCOPY command, but I really have no idea how to do that in bash. Thanks

I am going to store it as a file/s There is only ONE application/process accessing this data, and the code is executed line by line - please don't elaborate about locking. Please don't answer with database propositions but why to use external DB over native array/object - I have experience in a few databases - that's not the case. What I am building is a client/gateway/server(s) game. Gateway deals with all users data, processing, authenticating, writing statistics e.t.c No other part of software needs to access directly to this data/database.

• Three displays, one video card and no eyefinity mode

  I am looking for a video card to run three monitors, it could be hdmi, dvi or vga. I want the three monitors to show an extended desktop but as three different desktops with maybe different resolutions, so when i maximize something it should be maximized only in one monitor. The information seems confusing, I think eyefinity tricks the OS to make it looks like one big display. I am sure I dont want this. So my question(s) is, is there a video card in the market that support 3 displays without eyefinity? Or can I use an eyefinity enabled card ( with one active display port) to run three monitors and disable eyefinity from the driver settings or something?

• CentOS listen to everything on the wire

  I know there's a native command on linux that will output (to stdout) every "event" related to a certain network interface (be it eth0 etc'). Like there's tail -f <file> to listen on file changes.. I just can't find it. I want to see all events, incoming packets, even dropped ones. At lowest level possible. In every protocol (TCP, UDP etc'). I think WireShark is a bit too big for this as I need something very simple just to see the events, it's for testing. What's the command?

• Hanging page loads every n loads

  Hi Guys I recently moved my site to a new server (Apache 2, PHP5, MySQL5). The site is an Invision based forum. Every few posts / topics it just hangs. The data has been written because if you stop and reload, the post / thread is there. I thought it was a write issue initially, but nope. So, the data is written but the page load never completes. It doesn't leave the page where the data has been input. Whats the best way to trouble shoot this issue? The only thing I have done recently is reduce my MySQL timeouts, but I can't see that being an issue as the values are still big enough and there are no mentions of timeouts in the MySQL log. (For the record there is nothing in PHP's error log either) Thanks in advance!

• Does multiple files in SQL Server when using RAID help reduce conflicts in growth and file-locking?

  I've been reading around and get the impression that if you are using RAID then using multiple SQL Server files within a filegroup won't yeild any more improvements, and the benefits are purely administrative (if you started to run out of space or wanted to partition off data into managable chunks for backups/balancing the data around your big server room). However, being a reasonably savvy software person, it's not unthinkable to hypothesise that, even for smaller databases that SQL Server will perform growth and locking operations (for writes) on a LOGICAL file basis, so even if you are using RAID, it seems to make sense to have multiple files in a file group to balance I/O, or does the time taken to reconstruct the data from distributed filegroups outweigh the benefits of reduced locking? I'm also aware that the behaviour and benefits may be different for tables/indeces/log. Is there a good site that distinguishes the benefits of multiple files when RAID is already in place?

• One of my apache processes is huge - how can I find out why?

  I'm running Apache 2.2.12 with mod_wsgi, hosting a Django site. Most of the apache child processes weigh in at about 125MB RSS, but occasionally I see one child balloon to 1GB RSS. At this point there's usually 1 huge process (1GB), a couple of large ones (500MB) and the rest are still ~125MB. These are the mod_wsgi daemon processes. I've tried using memory leak tracing in Python to see if it's the Django code, and I see no leaks. Looking in the logs doesn't show any particularly strange requests. I'm stumped on how to figure out what's causing this - any ideas? Also, any workaround ways to kill the large apache process when it gets too big, without bringing apache down? • off-the-shelf HDD in Dell Optiplex 755 - Invalid Replacement - Press F1 when rebooting

  I recently put an SSD into my work Optiplex 755. Since then, every time the system boots or reboots, I get prompted to hit F1 to continue with a message like HDD replacement is not valid. The system works just fine. What I am gathering from Dell's website is that I left the original drive internally as a data drive. And apparently the Optiplex does not support 2 drives in the configuration we purchased originally and complains. Any suggestions on how to get rid of this message? some suggested the MEBx or whatever from Intel and to turn it off, but I did not succeed earlier. It's not a big deal 80% of the time, but I regularly work from home and occasionally need to fire a reboot and well, you don't get the BIOS screen remotely :) Regards, Eric.

• Mysql hosting for application backend

  I've been asked to help set up a way for a volunteer animal rescue organization to use an application to keep track of animals they've rescued. This application already exists, and can use it's own local database or connect to a MySQL database server. Since there are several volunteers spread out over a large region, a database server would be the best way to go. Money is a big problem, obviously. So, I'm looking for a very cheap or hopefully free database server or webhost that allows tcp/ip connections to their database servers. Backups will be handled on our end, so basically I just need the hosted mysql server. I've seen 000webhost.com, x10hosting, and xtreemhost, which all look promising, but they either aren't clear on remote mysql connections, or don't allow it at all. • Top/left edges of screen, in Virtualbox, act like bottom/right edges

  I have Virtualbox running on Windows Vista, and Debian running inside Virtualbox. Everything's running great, for the most part. Everything looks correct. But when I'm in full-screen mode, the top edge seems to act (to the mouse) like it's the bottom edge, and the left edge seems to act like the right edge. For example, if I click in the middle of the desktop and drag left, as if to select some icons, when I hit the very leftmost pixel of the screen, the selection (but not the mouse pointer) jumps to the far right edge of the screen). For the left edge, it's not such a big deal, but not having the top edge is kind of annoying: it means I can't select things from the menu in my top panel by slamming the mouse against the top of the screen. Anyone seen this before? Is there some way to make this work? Thanks!

  I have a Buffalo AirStation WZR-HP-G301NH I am able to access it's settings via 192.168.11.1 I'm connecting wirelessly with toshiba i686 laptop on Linux Mint Debian with service pack 3 and i686 dual core kernel This is just my home network but I know that there must be a way for large industries to shut their networks down or lock out their network access temporarily based on a time schedule, automatically. Like mon - fri the network provides access from 8am to 10pm and then automatically shuts down. I want this to affect all the computers accessing this netowork... basically all my families computers so that the internet just automatically shuts down at bedtime. I am running Linux Mint Debian and so maybe I need to make a cron job or something but does anyone know how big industries implement this and how I can do it privately? TIA

  I try to extract a file from set of .RAR parts. I always get the following error: Corrupted so I tried many programs to extract the corrupted RAR files. I have 10 parts, each one 400MB big. The last progam I used was Recovery toolbox for RAR. It gave me the following message: Severity:!High Message:Recovery error for file XXXX with message set file pointer error. The program extracted 2GB of data, but it should extract 4GB. Is there any way to extract the content or am I supposed to download the files again from another server?

  I just came across some articles on how to setup your own cloud using Cloudfoundry and Ubuntu, this got me thinking, choosing our infrastructure, if we want to use our own servers what's the advantage of cloud on virtual servers vs just using virtual servers, VPN? If we now develop for the cloud later if we need help we can quickly move on to a cloud provider, but other than that what's the advantage and disadvantage of private cloud in these areas? speed of development, testing, deployment server management security having an extra layer (cloud) will that have a hit on server performance, how big? any other advantage/disadvantage?

• Dual Screens with Widescreen monitors?

  I want to build a new computer and purchase new monitor(s). At my old job I had two 20" 4:3 and I absolutely loved this setup. However, the stores in my country only seem to have widescreen monitors nowadays, and the only 4:3 LCDs i have been able to find are 17". My question is: Do widescreens suck for using them as dual monitors? Can anyone with this setup comment on their experience with having multiple widescreen monitors? Would it be better to get three 17" 4:3 LCDs instead of two widescreens? If i go with widescreens, should i go with the smallest ones i can find? Purchasing a single big widescreen monitor is not an option for me, since being able to maximize an app on a specific area of the screen is a must have for me and im not willing to use "hacky" apps for this purpose that do a crappy job. • Running .net application over a network

  Hello, I need some advice please. I need to enable a .Net application to run over a network share, the problem is that this will be on clients network shares and so the path will not be identical. I've had a quick look at ClickOnce and the publish options in VS2008 but it wants a specific network share location - and I'm assuming this location gets stored somewhere when it does its thing. At the moment the job is being done with a old VB6 application and so gets around all these security issues, but that application is poorly written and almost impossible to maintain so it really needs to go. Is it possible for the domain controller to be set up to allow this specific .Net application to execute? Any other options would be welcomed as I want to get this little application is very business critical. I aught to say that the client networks are schools, and thus are often quite locked down as are the client machines, so manually adding exceptions to each client machine is a big no no. Marlon

• How do I rate limit google's crawl of my class C IP block?

  I have several sites in a class C network that all get crawled by google on a pretty regular basis. Normally this is fine. However, when google starts crawling all the sites at the same time, the small set of servers that back this IP block can take a pretty big hit on load. With google webmaster tools, you can rate limit the googlebot on a given domain, but I haven't found a way to limit the bot across an IP network yet. Anyone have experience with this? How did you fix it?

• Linux Disk Setup for VMs

  Been trying to find the ideal way to setup disks/partitions for Linux guests on ESXi. Seems as though Linux is falling behind when it comes easily adding disk space. The end goal is to be able to add disk space to a Linux server without rebooting the server or taking the server offline. Ideally, I would expect adding disk to a Linux machine should be as easy as adding disk space to a Windows machine. I expand the vmdk file from vSphere Open disk mangler find the disk and extend volume. Would have to use command line tools in linux which is no big deal, but I haven't been able to find a solid way to exand filesystems on the fly. What is everyone else using for disk setups on their linux guests? Has anyone been able to acheive adding storage space to linux without downtime? Can it be done without using lvm?
