  • ubuntu ppa's and apt precedence

    I'm trying to get the latest mplayer installed with vdpau support. Haven't had any luck so far. I found a PPA that says it works and I want to install it. I added the PPA to my apt.sources and did an update. I just wanted to know, how do I know that I'm now installing the mplayer package from the PPA, and not Ubuntu's standard repositories? From what I see I just install the same package using apt-get install mplayer. How do I know which mplayer I'm getting? Where do I specify what takes precedence?

Single click form saving from the browser. Not attached to a single PC. Offline version (so I can use it if there is no internet, for example plug USB and have last sync-ed data). Ability to store plain text (notes, for example). Should work on Windows, Linux and Mac. So far I have been happy with RoboForm, but its offline USB version is not available on Linux.     We are considering a change of email servers and Kerio Connect is attractive. However, I am concerned about calendaring functionality. I found an old forum post that states the question well: "We want to create a single public calendar that everyone can see - using Windows XP/Outlook 2003/KOC 6.4.1. We want a way for people to put an entry in their own personal calendar and some how mark it so the entry auto add's or syncs with the public one. If an entry is private it wouldn't sync to the shared public calendar... Has anyone ever heard of a way to do this - in any way with any software?" This is a high priority feature, so if Kerio cannot do this, we may consider Exchange. Does Exchange provide functionality like that described?

  • Determining timeout reason

    What is the best way to determine what causes a server timeout on a Plesk passworded directory in IIS6? Even if the default page is static text I can get a timeout. This has worked fine for two years and has only seemed to change after adding a new permitted user. Occasionally there is success but usually loading is very slow. Where would I look for a problem, as it doesn't seem to be page content causing the issue?

  • Upgrade AirPort on Macs to support Snow Leopard's Wake on Wireless/WLAN?

    Snow Leopard now supports Wake on WLAN, but not all hardware supports this. For example, my Octo Mac Pro from early 2008 has an AirPort card, but it does not support this. Nor does my 2007 2.33GHz MacBook Pro. For reference to what is needed, look at http://www.macrumors.com/2009/08/28/a-closer-look-at-snow-leopards-wake-on-demand-feature/ which includes a screenshot of what the System Profiler should show. It's pretty hard to find Apple parts, but is it possible to put newer cards into these machines to have them support Wake on Wireless?

    Currently we manually document the connections to the ports of our switches. Of course, maintenance is a chore, and the documentation is out of date as soon as you save it. Are there any tools for querying switches, preferably via SNMP, that can tell you what is connected on the other end? For the record, we use primarily HP ProCurve switches.

  • How to power off a hard drive to essentially "hot swap"

    I'm looking for either freeware or the programming basics to power off/on a hard drive. Mounting and unmounting a hard drive is simple enough just using the command prompt in Windows XP. Now I need to be able to power down the hard drive so it will not become damaged when being unplugged. I would prefer this to be a simple doable in the command prompt, a simple script, or at worst C++/C#. Freeware that does this exact requirement would also do the job. This script/program will run on Windows XP with .NET 2.0 SP1.

  • Easily recreate a server's "state" [closed]

    I want the ability to setup new servers for dev/testing/prod very easily. The reasons for being able to setup a new dev VM is obvious, but for prod my concern is adding a new production server/migrating to a new server. I assume a traditional backup solution won't work as hardware may be different so the binaries/config might be different. I want to get experience with puppet anyways, so I was thinking about creating a manifest that would setup my users, install Postgres, Nginx, PHP-FPM, etc, and configure them the way I specify. Then I could install puppet on a new server, copy down my manifest and apply it locally. This would make keeping my server configs in sync easier too. Is there a better approach I'm not aware of, and does my approach have any pitfalls?

  • XP Restart After Power Failure

    Hello, I've almost got my power settings sorted and was hoping someone could help? If I'm running XP and the power is cut, when the power is restored my machine auto restarts (this is what I want!) However, if I shutdown my machine properly (from the start menu & without touching the PC power button!), then switch the power off at the socket, then switch the power back on, the PC does not automatically restart. It's like the bios(?) recieives a message saying "aha, genuine shutdown and not a power cut, therefore do not restart on power restore." I want my PC to restart everytime it sees power restored from the socket? Any way round this? Anyone seen this before? I've upgraded my bios. Thanks in advance, Jim

  • vmware - ACE, Workstation - how to manage remoe clients??

    Hi. Exploring Vmware products/services and have a few questions. As I understand VM, you can use VMWare Workstation to create a VM of a target machine/box/OS. Let's call this VM, "foo". If I have 100 client PCs in my dept, and I want to install the VM (foo) on each client, and also manage the remote VM instances of (foo). How can I accompish this? Let's assume that the client machines are running Windows7, and have the vmplayer app installed on the box. I'm looking to do the following kinds of actions regarding the remote client machines: -Update the foo VM/image with new updated copies -Make sure that every VM "foo" has the same user, but a unique passwd -Monitor the traffic/status of each client VM "foo" oin each client -Start/Stop each client VN "foo" from the master console -Etc... Can this be accomplished? How would I do it, what services/products would I need? I've tried toalking to a few of the pre-sales guys in VMWare, and got nowhere, other than telling me to email my questions!! Looking at google shed more insight, but I still have questions. So, if you have detailed VMWare understanding, pointers to consultants, or resellers who can help, all pointers are greatly appreciated. Thanks -tom

  • Alternatives to using email (in particular, Outlook) as a knowledge store?

    I suspect that, like many people, I use my work email account (accessed via Outlook 2007) to store information. I generally try to group similar things in folders and sub-folders, but with a multitude of folders this gets very unwieldy. In particular, it can be a bind to locate things using Outlook's tree structure. (As an aside: I've yet to come across a good free search add-on for Outlook.) I realise Outlook is not the best place to store all my information and I'd prefer not to. In an ideal world I'd like to be able to organise all of the information stored in Outlook in a MindMap (my software of choice being Freemind) or Wiki. To maintain an email audit-trail, I've considered saving individual emails as files using a MindMap or Wiki to link them. What do people think of this? (I can't say I relish the thought of the exporting process!) Whatever I do is going to involve some pain (i.e. setting up a Wiki/MindMap) or sticking with what Outlook provides currently. Has anyone been in the same position? Has anyone mass-migrated information from Outlook? If so, what was the best way? Any ideas or alternative proposals?

  • How to merge (and not replace) folders when copying, on mac?

    There's a similar question about windows. This is the same, but for mac. If I try to copy or move a folder to somewhere it already exists, it asks to replace it. That would result in deleting the target. Rather I want to merge. There's already a aquataskforce request about this, and it's a discussion going for a lont time if it's even something that should exist on Mac, due to its whole philosophy. Discussions at apple are outdated and didn't help much as well. As usual, there are professional solutions for doing this, such as Changes and Araxis. And there is the rsync or command line alternatives. But I want a free and simple solution, something like how it is done in Windows or Linux. I won't be doing it much anyway. By the way, PathFinder don't have such option as well and FolderMerge doesn't work on Snow Leopard as far as my 1 test went.

    Will be starting a small graphics design firm soon, with 20 employees. Therefore need software to manage the network. Have bought a bulk license of Windows 7. I have a spare computer which can act as a server if necessary, but its an ancient Dell machine (Pentium-III). If required I would purchase an extra machine, but would like to avoid unnecessary costs at start up. Following are the main functions that I would like to perform: Need to monitor\control network traffic and internet usage, restrict access to certain websites Alerts when access to certain software's, and when trying to tamper with privileges Ability to view desktops of any computer at any given time Limit access to certain hardware like USB ports,etc Limit access to folders on the computer Log/Report of all actions including keystrokes performed on any computer Local Network chat and talk client Collaboration and Work logs Any Software available to do all of the above and also any additional hardware required besides network switches, network card's and CAT5e cables.   • How do I make ESXi 5.0 to shutdown virtual machines when the physical power button is pushed?

    I have a home NAS/DLNA server built out of an HP Micro Server with the HP branded VMware ESXi 5.0.0 build-623860 (free license) installed. Being a home media center I'd like it to be "manageable" by all my household members. This requires that it needs to be powered on an off (including all the VMs inside) by anybody with the physical access to the server by simply pressing the power button on the chassis. The "startup" part is easy to obtain - all I had to do was to configure the startup/shutdown policy: Once the server powers up, all VMs start as well and that's exactly what I need. Well.. it did work up until 5.0.0U1, but that's a different story: http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/2012/03/free-esxi-hypervisor-auto-start-breaks-with-50-update-1.html Unfortunately, pressing the power button doesn't gracefully shutdown the guest machines - they are terminated instead. If I run the "shut down" command from the vSphere Client interface guests are powered off. I'd like to get the same end result when the physical power button is switched. I've poked around a bit on the ESXi server. There's a "/sbin/shutdown.sh" script that seemed to do exactly what I need... but after trying it does exactly what the power off button. The "/etc/inittab" contains an entry for the "shutdown" level but I suppose it's not hooked to the power button. I can't find any acpi related configuration, neither do I know what exactly is executed when the power button is pressed. Does anybody have a clue how can I make the VMs shutdown automatically when the physical power switch is pressed to turn of the computer?

  • Add dpkg .symbols or.shlibs to package made using checkinstall

    I have created a simple package using checkinstall of the Oracle Instantclient client libraries, the package installs without problem and is seen in the system. Problem is, that checkinstall doesn't create /var/lib/dpkg/info/oracle-instantclient11.2-basic.symbols or /var/lib/dpkg/info/oracle-instantclient11.2-basic.shlibs files so when I try to create another package (with proper build scripts) that depends on oracle-instantclient11.2-basic the build fails with dpkg-shlibdeps: error: no dependency information found for \ /usr/lib/libclntsh.so.11.1 (used by \ debian/libopendbx1-oracle/usr/lib/opendbx/liboraclebackend.so.1.2.0). dh_shlibdeps: dpkg-shlibdeps \ -Tdebian/libopendbx1-oracle.substvars \ debian/libopendbx1-oracle/usr/lib/opendbx/liboraclebackend.so.1.2.0 \ returned exit code 2 make: *** [binary-arch] Error 9 Is there an easy way to automatically create a package with .symbols or .shlibs files?

Is there a utility that I can use to turn off/disconnect the storage drive when I'm not using it?     A Windows Server 2003 R2 has the following hard disk configuration: - 3 internal hard disks attached to a 3Ware unit, configured in Raid 1 + spare unit - 3 external USB backup disks: 2 Verbatim 1TB (Samsung HD103SI) + 1 Western Digital 1TB (WD10EADS) The server runs 365 days per year, h24, however: - at daytime the server/user usage is limited to the internal hard disks - at nighttime there's no user usage, apart from scheduled maintenance tasks, basically the Server will be idle from 7PM to 8AM. apart from nighly backups (few hours). I was wondering if: (a) it makes any sense let Windows manage power savings, allowing disks to spin down accordingly, ** OR** let the disks stay awlays-on, to avoid permature wearing, due to continuous spin up/down (b) leave internal disks always on, and force external disks to power down while idle (this requires third party tools, such as Verbatim's Green button utility) Your thoughts?

  • Utility or technique for swapping files quickly in Windows

    I frequently need to swap one file with another, without overwriting the original. Let's say there are two files, foo_new.dll and foo.dll. I usually rename them the follwing way: foo.dll - foo_old.dll, foo_new.dll - foo.dll, [do something with replaced file], foo.dll - foo_new.dll, foo_old.dll - foo.dll. This is ok for a single file to swap but it becomes tedious when swapping multiple files at once. Is there a Windows (7 and preferrably XP) utility or a technique that simplifies this task and works well when swapping multiple files? I'd prefer to be able to use it from within FreeCommander but Windows Explorer would be ok, too.
