• Mouse stopped responding after installing Ubuntu Server

  It was 2 operating systems on my machine, Windows 7 and Ubuntu Desktop 12.04, both 64bit version. All works well, firstly I installed Win, then the Desktop version of Ubuntu, lasts's GRUB rewrites windows's boot and of course added it as a variant to load. Yesterday I wish to play with Ubuntu Server 12.04, and install it as a third operating system. During the installation Server's GRUB seems to rewrite that which installed earlier (background color became black, was purple). Firstly, newly installed GRUB generates me overmuch load options for Ubuntu Desktop, by two for each kernel version (normal and recovery modes). OK, it's bearable, but most thing, that the mouse on this machine is totally stops responding, regardless which operating system I choose to load. Hope somebody help me. Thanks in advance!

• (Joomla 1.6) Template position descriptions don't refresh

  I want to change a description of a template position, so when I go to Admin-Extensions-Module Manager I see a different description of a module position in the position list when I edit a module. However, when I change (for instance) the template 'beez_20' and want to rename the name of the position 'debug', I change the description (TPL_BEEZ_20_POSITION_DEBUG) in the language file 'languages\en-GB\en-GB.tpl_beez_20.sys.ini' to something different, say 'Abracadabra'. However, the changes don't appear in the position list and I can find no reference whatsoever of how or when the ini files are read or maybe cached. Does anyone has a clue?

• How to make a minimal upgrade?

  I use apt-get install --no-install-recommends ubuntu-desktop to install minimal desktop. I want to upgrade my system to the latest version (12.04) with it still being minimal. How do I do that? What I tried:- I tried Update Manager, and it gave me the Option to upgrade to 11.10 first, then to 12.04. What happened after I upgraded to 11.10 is that my desktop got bloated, and instead of the system using 500MB of RAM, now it uses about 1.5GB I can't even start apps anymore.

• gnome-power-manager is running while trying to log in. How to get rid of it?

  After booting into the ubuntu login screen and clicking on my user name and entering the password, I get a dialog stating that gnome-power-manager is still running. The dialog presents 2 buttons, 1 to Cancel and other to Logout Anyway. This issue happens about 50% of the time and I don't remember doing anything related to power management recently. Also, even if I don't choose any option in the dialog it goes away after about 30s. This is happening on a desktop machine as well as a laptop. On the laptop I have configured power management for myself (not for gdm) whereas in desktop I have not configured power management for any user. This is only an annoyance but still I would like to fix it, especially on my desktop where I am interested in getting it auto-login ASAP into my userid. Any ideas why this could be happenning?

  Hi all, I'm trying to get Subclipse working in Eclipse Galeilo, and to do that I have to install the JavaHL library. I installed the library using sudo apt-get install libsvn-java, but the eclipse.ini file has to be modified to take in the new library as an argument. First change to the ini file was -Djava.library.path=/usr/lib/jni/, which produced the errors "no libsvnjavahl-1 in java.library.path" "incompatible javahl library loaded. 1.3.x or later required." according to the install printout, version 1.6.12 was installed. So, I added libsvnjavahl-1.so to the file path above, and produced the following errors: "no libsvnjavahl-1 in java.library.path" "no svnjavahl-1 in java.library.path" "no svnjavahl in java.library.path" What's going on here?

• Why do I have Unity and GNOME Classic running at the same time?

  I've recently updated and found that Unity shows on the gnome-classic/fallback desktop. Is this a new feature (which I doubt to be), or a bug? If it is a bug, tell me how to disable Unity because it interferes with the lower panel (i.e. I bring out Trash instead of showing the desktop when I try pressing the "Show desktop" button when the panel is not in focus). I don't encounter this problem in gnome-classic (No effects). Don't judge me. I like pokemon!

• Ubuntu Crashes @ Login Screen

  So, I've been having troubles with the newest Windows Installer for Ubuntu Desktop(http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/windows-installer). When I start up up the operating system, i enter the login screen of Ubuntu. Everything is fine at that moment except my mouse and keyboard are frozen. Next I hear a "bongo" noise which is obviously the system looping and getting ready to crash. Soon enough, I enter a purple screen with white diagonal short lines in the background. I am then forced to unplug my desktop. Any way to fix this? Thanks!

• Ubuntu freezing after boot

  I have ubuntu 12.04 LTS dual booting with windows 7 on my laptop without any problems and felt like doing the same on my desktop. However now that I have installed Ubuntu on the desktop through Wubi, if I boot into ubuntu the log in screen is as far as I get. I see my username and the password box but everything is completely unresponsive. I can move the mouse around the screen fine I just can't click on anything and the keyboard doesn't seem to work at all as I've tried a few shortcuts and there's no response at all. I have done a some searches and I think it's a driver issue but I don't know how to fix them as I'm pretty new to ubuntu and cannot log in at all. Desktop specs if needed: Intel core i7 2700k, NVidia GTX 580, 8GB RAM. Thanks in advance

• PCManFM problems: shuts down unexpectedly, would not always start [closed]

  In Lubuntu 12.04 beta (final release in a few days). I do not remember doing something outrageous to my PCManFM but now it has has a lot of problems: "extract here" menu action wouldn't work (this problem never disappears) the program shuts without obvious reason making the desktop empty (the program can be started in run (alt-f2) but this does not alway restore the desktop) would not start sometimes from its /usr/share/applications.desktop file (or the "Aplication Launch Bar") although it starts in run (alt-f2) (the last problem is temporarily solved if the program is closed in task manager and than restarted with alt-f2) I have reinstalled it to no avail. Any ideas?

• Why Gsettings isn't enough to reset my nautilus settings?

  I'm trying to narrow down a bug (to eventually report it or give up if it'll turn out that resetting a simple setting will be enough to get rid of it) I noticed that with a brand new user the bug doesn't pop up so I tried to reset the config of my user's nautilus I renamed .config/nautilus I renamed .nautilus2 (strange name... why the 2?) and I did a gsettings reset-recursively org.gnome.nautilus strangely enough, it didn't work: I previously set up to use my home as the desktop folder, and now the key has correctly been resetted $gsettings get org.gnome.nautilus.preferences desktop-is-home-dir false and yet on my desktop I see the contents of my home folder (meaning that the settings have not been resetted) I know that with the transition to gtk3 there've been lots of changes (before I should've used gconf... but now there's dconf and gsettings), so there're quite a bit of question about nautilus... but these unfortunately now seem to be outdated

  I am trying to install Ubuntu Desktop 12.04 on my laptop. It just failed on the entry selection step(to select installation or try it first). However, when I tried it on my desktop computer, the installation went smoothly . I've thought of that and got a few clues. My Desktop computer had Window XP installed already, while my laptop has only got Linux(Fedora 14) Is there a laptop version of Ubuntu? And I just downloaded the wrong one? Thanks for any suggestion! • How to copy the file from source to destination only once at a time?

  I have to copy the file from my desktop to my mounted directory. I was using the following command to copy the file from my desktop to mounted directory. os.system("cp -f /home/Desktop/filename /media/folder_1"). It works fine. But the problem is while copying the file from my source to mounted directory(folder_1) if any interruption is happens like network down, then the system continuously keep on trying. It couldn't skip that process. Finally, when the network comes the files are again copy to my mounted directory. Due to this continuous trying, next time i try to move the content it throws "permission denied" error. How do i copy the file only once, if any network issues happen then it will not keep try to copy, instead of that, it throws the error. If you know, Let me. Its very useful to me.

  This question relates to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I wish to move a folder from the desktop into the applications folder at home/usr/share/applications. When I attempt to drag the folder from the desktop to the applications folder, I get the following message: "Error moving file: Permission denied" Permission or no permission, I want to move a folder from the desktop to the above said applications folder. How do I authenticate so I can make this move? There is no opportunity to authenticate when I get the error message, only "Skip" or "Cancel". I don't want to skip or cancel, I want to authenticate and move the folder. How do I do this? Thank you!

  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xyJkS8XjgA&feature=youtu.be I managed to take a video with what happens on my Ubuntu 12.10 laptop when I play with the volume and hover with the mouse over the slider and when I press Ctrl + Alt + D (show Desktop/minimize all) The real bugs are those in which the panel becomes transparent on the down side, exactly above the volume slider (and not only when that slider appears, but also when brightness slider appears, and when blocking my touchpad applet appears) and when I have a maximized window, more maximized windows or a non maximized window that touches the panel, while I use Ctrl+Alt+D (show Desktop/hide all normal windows). Is there a way to solve this bug? PS: The other bugs are from Record My Desktop. I didn't have the mentioned bugs in ubuntu 12.04, but I like more the graphics in 12.10.

• Play music from computer on phone, over WiFi?

  Wasn't sure whether to ask on here on on android.stackexchange.com ... but I want to play music which is on my desktop machine through my phone. The music is coming from ext4 partition which I am happy to share on the LAN. It should use WiFi not bluetooth (because I hope to use the bluetooth interface for other things, simultaneously). Is it possible and what do I need to setup on the desktop (on Ubuntu 12.04) and/or my phone (galaxy nexus)? edit: Just to clarify, I want the music to be playing from the phone, not through the desktop's speakers.

• How to have the game world get rendered on just a part of the screen?

  I am implementing a game on both Desktop and Android. The Desktop version will just rely on the keyboard to handle the user input on the game screen, whilst the Android one will have to have a set of buttons placed in a bar at the bottom of the game screen, using a Stage. Consequently, I am expecting the game world to take up the entire space available on the Desktop screen, whilst on Android it should expand to the entire width of the screen, and to the screen height minus the height of the buttons bar I've mentioned. What would be an appropriate approach of handling space sharing between the game world and the buttons bar? Thank you.

• Adding data sources for unixODBC/isql on Mac OSX Lion

  I have installed unixODBC from source and mysql-odbc connector from .dmg installer on Mac OSX Lion. This was done a while ago, and at that time I successfully installed a data source (let's call it foo). Now I am trying to add another data source (DSN). I've done this through both ODBC Manager and the command-line tool myodbc-installer given with the tar bundle of the mysql-odbc connector from the mysql website. • PHP 5.3 on IIS gives 404 error in CGI mode

  Slowly losing my mind here. I had PHP 5.2 working fine (ISAPI) under IIS, but for some extension I needed 5.3. So no worries, I installed this but it turns out ISAPI is not supplied anymore. I followed the install tutorials for fastcgi and ended up with a 500 internal server error for every PHP page served. So my current situation is: I have fastcgi removed. In my websites I have added PHP (head, get, post) and routed them to c:\php\php-cgi.exe. Result: every PHP page I try (even the ones with just text) gives 404 not found error. Any HTML file I put in the same folder, serves without a hitch. Who can help me please... How hard can something like this be right? For me apparently very hard. Extra information: ran the installer as suggested below. Set it to use fastcgi. my fcgiext.ini file looks like this now: [types] php=c:\php\php-cgi.exe [c:\php\php-cgi.exe] exepath=c:\php\php-cgi.exe from the command-line a 3 line PHP file with just phpinfo(); works fine from the server the same PHP file with just phpinfo(); results in the internal server 500 error. from the server a PHP file with just text works fine when changing the document types in IIS management console and point the PHP extension directly to c:\php\php-cgi.exe results in 404 for every PHP file the php.ini is the php.ini.production file which came in the distribution. No edits were made. Setting the IIS PHP handler directly to PHP (not via fastcgi) c:\php\php-cgi.exe results in the following: display a PHP page with only text....works fine display a page with only phpinfo(); results in 404 not found

  elloo, i have some old php scripts which runs on php-5.2.x and the current server has php-5.3.x. to get around this problem,i have got two options one is to downgrade php-5.3.x or install php-5.2.x and php-5.3.x at the same time where php-5.2.x serve cgi script. i have decided go for the second option i have followed this tutorial and i can get most of it working however except execution of shell script which selects php-cgi version. i cannot get apache to execute this script. how do i get apache to execute #!/bin/sh # you can change the PHP version here. version="5.2.6" # php.ini file location, */php-5.2.6/lib equals */php-5.2.6/lib/php.ini. • ubuntu: Installed php-mcrypt but it doesn't show up in phpinfo()

  A web app I'm trying to install on my ubuntu 10.04 LTS requires mcrypt, and is generating this error: Fatal error: Call to undefined function mcrypt_module_open(). I know this is the same question as this one: Installed php-mcrypt but it doesn't show up in phpinfo(), but I tried several things, none of which worked, and have additional questions. I would comment on the original thread but don't have enough reputation to do so; forgive me for the duplicate question. My versions of php and mcrypt are (both installed via apt-get): php: 5.3.2-1ubuntu4.10 mcrypt: 5.3.2-0ubuntu Doing a php -m shows that the mcrypt module is installed. I installed mcrypt and php5-mcrypt via apt-get. Also, I'm using nginx as my web server. I have tried reinstalling mcrypt and restarting nginx, but still can't get mcrypt to show up on phpinfo() and calls to mcrypt are still broken. Here is some more info: $ php -i | grep "mcrypt" /etc/php5/cli/conf.d/mcrypt.ini, mcrypt mcrypt support => enabled mcrypt.algorithms_dir => no value => no value mcrypt.modes_dir => no value => no value I also checked that mcrypt is on in /etc/php5/cli/conf.d/mcrypt.ini and /etc/php5/cgi/conf.d/mcrypt.ini. Lastly, I'm using fastCGI with nginx. I googled around and saw suggestions to restart php5-fpm. I couldn't find php5-fpm in apt-get, I'm not sure if I still need php5-fpm since I already have fastCGI. Is there anything else I'm missing?

• What is wrong with my Watcher (incron-like) daemon?

  I have installed Watcher this way: both watcher.py and watcher.ini are located in /etc I also installed pyinotify and it does work when I use python -m pyinotify -v /var/www However, I want to use the daemon and when I start watcher.py, I get weird lines on my watcher.log (see below). I also included my watcher.ini file. Note: I have the latest version of Python. The watcher.py can be found here What is wrong with what I did? Also, do I really need pyinotify?   I'm trying to install MediaWiki on a Win2008r2 server, but can't manage to install PHP. Here's what I did: Grabbed a Zip archive of PHP and unzipped it into C:\PHP. Created two subdirs: c:\PHP\sessiondata and c:\PHP\uploadtemp. Granted modify rights to the IUSR account for the subdirs. Copied php.ini-production as php.ini Edited php.ini and made the following changes: fastcgi.impersonate = 1 cgi.fix_pathinfo = 1 cgi.force_redirect = 0 open_basedir = "c:\inetpub\wwwroot;c:\PHP\uploadtemp;C:\PHP\sessiondata" extension = php_mysql.dll extension_dir = "./ext" upload_tmp_dir = C:\PHP\uploadtemp session.save_path = C:\php\sessiondata Install Web server role, selected CGI and HTTP Redirection options. In the Handler Mappings: Added Module Mapping. Entered the following values: Path = *.php, Module = FastCgiModule, Executable = c:\php\php-cgi.exe, Name = PHP via FastCGI. Created a test page into wwwroot directory: phpinfo.php and set the contents like this: < ?php phpinfo(); ? • Apache can't be restarted after changes to the configuration file

  Hello, I can't successfully configure the apache and php configuration files, can anybody help me in this way? Apache 2.2.16 (win32-x86-no_ssl.msi) was installed into “C:\Apache2.2 “location. Then PHP 5.3.3 (VC9 x86 Thread Safe) zip file was downloaded and extracted on “C:\php” location. From “C:\php” I renamed the “php.ini-development” file into “php.ini” “php.ini” file was opened with notepad, and modified as: doc_root = "C:\Apache2.2\htdocs" extension_dir = "C:\php\ext" The following lines were added to the Apache's configuration file “httpd.conf”: LoadModule php5_module "C:/php/php5apache2_2.dll" AddType application/x-httpd-php .php PHPIniDir "C:/php" N.B.: Thanks all for comments and answer, but I can't reply none your comments, I don't know why. May be I'm not privileged to put any comment as I'm new here (is it the case?)! That's why I'm to edit my post to reply you all.   I have a Windows Server 2003 / IIS web server running various application servers, and ended up begrudgingly adding PHP into the mix. I know Win/IIS isn't the ideal environment for PHP, but it's what I've got and I need to make it work. From phpinfo(): Configuration File (php.ini) Path: C:\WINDOWS Loaded Configuration File: C:\php\php.ini From C:\php\php.ini: [mail function] ; For Win32 only. SMTP = localhost smtp_port = 25 ; For Win32 only. ;sendmail_from = [email protected] ; For Unix only. You may supply arguments as well (default: "sendmail -t -i"). ;sendmail_path = ; Force the addition of the specified parameters to be passed as extra parameters ; to the sendmail binary. These parameters will always replace the value of ; the 5th parameter to mail(), even in safe mode. ;mail.force_extra_parameters = Lastly, I have IIS setup to run an SMTP relay that allows connection and relay, but only from localhost. But when I try something that uses mail(), I get this error: The e-mail could not be sent. Possible reason: your host may have disabled the mail() function... Any ideas?
