  • Does Ruby have a special stack for returning a value?

    - by prosseek
The following Ruby code def a(b,c) b+c end is the same as follows with Python def a(b,c): return b+c It looks like that ruby has the special stack that stores the final evaluation result and returns the value when a function is called. If so, what's the name of the stack, and how can I get that stack? If not, how does the Ruby code work without returning something?

  • Is there anything like Zope Page Templates for Ruby on Rails?

    - by dan
I have a Ruby on Rails app that I built myself, but which needs a redesign by a professional designer. I know most designers just give you Photoshop mockups and slices, but I would like to hire someone to implement the design as well, which means rewriting the css style sheets and the erb and haml templates. The problem is that I want someone else to implement the redesign without exposing my business logic code to the redesign implementer. Also, I wish there was a way to allow a designer to implement a redesign on a Ruby on Rails site without having to know anything about Ruby on Rails. Are either of these scenarios possible using any combination of software tools? I guess I'm looking for something like Zope Page Templates, but for Ruby on Rails. http://quintagroup.com/cms/zpthttp://quintagroup.com/cms/zpt

  • Convert Markdown text to RTF, using Ruby and Pandoc?

    - by niteshade
    Playing with Ruby and Ruby-Pandoc. Seems like a nice tool, if I can get it to work. I'd like to convert some Markdown text (with embedded lists and other fanciness) to Rich Text. Here's the text I'm converting: Title === This is a paragraph. Hallelujah. Here comes a nested list. --- * List item 1 * List item 1.1 * List item 1.2 * List item 2 * List item 2.1 Here's my Ruby code... require 'pandoc-ruby' input = File.read(test.md) converter = PandocRuby.new(input, from: :markdown, to: :rtf) puts converter.convert ... which (after saving the output to a file) produces a document without anything but a title: Here's the code of the RTF file: {\pard \ql \f0 \sa180 \li0 \fi0 \b \fs36 Title\par} {\pard \ql \f0 \sa180 \li0 \fi0 This is a paragraph. Hallelujah.\par} {\pard \ql \f0 \sa180 \li0 \fi0 \b \fs32 Here comes a nested list.\par} {\pard \ql \f0 \sa0 \li360 \fi-360 \bullet \tx360\tab List item 1\par} {\pard \ql \f0 \sa0 \li360 \fi-360 \bullet \tx360\tab List item 1.1\par} {\pard \ql \f0 \sa0 \li360 \fi-360 \bullet \tx360\tab List item 1.2\par} {\pard \ql \f0 \sa0 \li360 \fi-360 \bullet \tx360\tab List item 2\par} {\pard \ql \f0 \sa0 \li360 \fi-360 \bullet \tx360\tab List item 2.1\sa180\par} In addition, even if it did show up in my RTF viewer (Mac TextEdit), the RTF code seems to have lost all list nesting. I don't know how to diagnose this, whether I have not stated necessary header information or something in Ruby-Pandoc. Thanks in advance!

  • Render 3d object to 2d surface (embedded system)

    - by Martin Berger
i am working on an embedded system of a sort, and in some free time i would like to test its drawing capabilities. System in question is ARM Cortex M3 microcontroller attached to EasyMX Stellaris board. And i have a small 320x240 TFT screen :) Now, i have some free time each day and i want to create rotating cube. Micro C PRO for ARM doesnt have 3d drawing capabilities, which means it must be done in software. From the book Introduction to 3D Game Programming with DirectX 10 i know matrix algebra for transformations but that is cool when you have DirectX to set camera right. I gues i could make 2d object to rotate, but how would i go with 3d one? Any ideas and examples are welcome. Although i would prefer advices. I'd like to understand this.

  • Non-Embedded Content for your Popup Controls Target Container

Yesterday I posted about client side predicates for Popup controls. Thanks for all the Tweets and Emails. The Popup control is very powerful and Popups are now an expected construct in many web user interfaces. I received a number of questions about using content in Popups that is not embedded in the containing page. Probably the easiest is to use in iFrame inside the Panel container for the Popup. In code it looks like this. Code Snippet <h1>Modal iFrame</h1> <asp:Button...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Tilgin Improves Subscriber Device Management with Embedded MySQL

    - by Bertrand Matthelié
Tilgin IPRG AB develops and delivers systems and software for the digitally-connected home. Using Tilgin home gateway software, as well as central software for remote control and operation of the network, Tilgin’s customers can offer their subscribers broadband services. The company has over 100 customers,  telecommunications and broadband operators, in more than 30 countries.Tilgin needed a robust and scalable database solution for its auto-configuration server (ACS) product, tGem, used by its customers to manage the devices that provide their subscribers with access to television, internet, telephony, and other services. Tilgin chose MySQL as embedded database. This made it possible for Tilgin’s customers to easily and smoothly implement new generations of services, as well as to easily add new subscribers, ultimately enabling the company to save time and money. • Build git on embedded system

    - by naive231
I want to build git on our embedded system and I got git's source code from here. I run ./configure tool with following arguments: ./configure --build=arm-eabi --host=`uname -p`-`uname -s`-`uname -o` Configure tool runs, and returns an error says: checking whether system succeeds to read fopen'ed directory...configure: error: in`/home/git-1.8.0.2`. I set necessary environment variables like CC and CXX to our tool chain already, so ./configure complains nothing about compilers. But I have no idea about that error message. It looks like some permission problem, but I have full permission of /home/git-1.8.0.2 for sure. Any idea ?

  • Unable to use factory girl with Cucumber and rails 3 (bundler problem)

  • Getting Rails Application Running Under IronRuby Rack

    - by NotMyself
Anyone else playing with ironruby? I have successfully got the IronRuby.Rails.Example project running on my local machine under IIS 5.1. I am now attempting to get my own demo rails site running in the same way. My web.config is slightly different from the example project. I am attempting to only use what was distributed with IronRuby 1.0 and what I have installed using gems. I am getting the following error which doesn't give me a lot to go on: D:/demo/config/boot.rb:66:in `exit': exit (SystemExit) After trying many different things, I think it is having a problem finding gems. I have attached my web config and ironrack.log. Does anyone have pointers on what I am doing wrong? • A good example project to 'prove' my skills [closed]

    - by David Archer
I've been a commercial programmer for about 3 years now but all of my commercial work is based upon PHP (with Cake PHP, Wordpress and Wildfire) and ASP.Net (on C#, including MVC 3, Umbraco and Kentico) as well as plenty of HTML/CSS/jQuery examples to show. A future employer has asked me to show my Ruby on Rails potential. I've done Ruby on Rails before for fun, but nothing worthy of commercial showing. What I'd like to know, from a group of programmers, is what would be a good 'portfolio demo' piece for you? What have you seen in the past that impressed you? What are you looking for? For Ruby lead developers specifically, what sort of things are you looking to see in the code? Cheers!

  • Unable to Install Guard

  • Instance where embedded C++ compilers don't support multiple inheritance?

    - by Nathan
I read a bit about a previous attempt to make a C++ standard for embedded platforms where they specifically said multiple inheritance was bad and thus not supported. From what I understand, this was never implemented as a mainstream thing and most embedded C++ compilers support most standard C++ constructs. Are there cases where a compiler on a current embedded platform (i.e. something not more than a few years old) absolutely does not support multiple inheritance? I don't really want to do multiple inheritance in a sense where I have a child with two full implementations of a class. What I am most interested in is inheriting from a single implementation of a class and then also inheriting one or more pure virtual classes as interfaces only. This is roughly equivalent to Java/.Net where I can extend only one class but implement as many interfaces as I need. In C++ this is all done through multiple inheritance rather than being able to specifically define an interface and declare a class implements it.

  • Outlook 2003: How to print embedded images in e-mails?

    - by Jon Seigel
My boss has been trying to print his e-mails with embedded images, but the images don't print. All we get is a placeholder space where the image should be. Ideally, we'd like to have an option to control whether images get printed or not. I Googled this already and the one solution I found, trying to print the e-mail from the separate window using the print icon, did not work. Edit: also tried the solution here without success. I had him forward a sample e-mail to me, and I printed it fine in my Outlook (same version).

  • Is there a Linux distro that will easily run "embedded style" on a Raspberry Pi?

    - by Dan Harper
I need a Linux distro that will give me the following: Run on a Raspberry Pi Can reliably survive power loss (like via a read-only filesystem) I've been able to hunt down some documentation on how to change a regular Linux distro over to read-only mode. I was hoping that there would be a distro already built that was designed to run in an embedded environment. I don't need many packages or drivers, just enough to have the Pi working with USB/Ethernet. I don't need any GUI interface or anything, this will just be running a custom service built in C. Does anyone know of a distro that would fit?

  • Cannot install passenger with Nginx

    - by Luc
Hello, I have a rack application that I want to migrate from Ruby 1.8.7 + Apache + passenger to Ruby 1.9.1 + Nginx + passenger. I have made up the following script for a quick install all in one, and it raises an error... Here is the installation script: (basic one with all the steps I need to install everything on a Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx fresh box) Nginx sources cd /tmp wget http://nginx.org/download/nginx-0.7.66.tar.gz tar xzf nginx-0.7.66.tar.gz cd nginx-0.7.66 openssl required for SSL/TLS sudo apt-get install openssl sudo apt-get install libssl-dev Compilation stuff sudo apt-get zlib1g-dev Ruby interpreter 1.9.1 sudo apt-get install ruby1.9.1 ruby1.9.1-dev rubygems1.9.1 irb1.9.1 ri1.9.1 rdoc1.9.1 build-essential nginx libopenssl-ruby1.9.1 Make sure default ruby uses version 1.9.1 sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/ruby ruby /usr/bin/ruby1.9.1 400 --slave /usr/share/man/man1/ruby.1.gz ruby.1.gz /usr/share/man/man1/ruby1.9.1.1.gz --slave /usr/bin/ri ri /usr/bin/ri1.9.1 --slave /usr/bin/irb irb /usr/bin/irb1.9.1 --slave /usr/bin/rdoc rdoc /usr/bin/rdoc1.9.1 sudo update-alternatives --config ruby Passenger (rake-0.8.7, fastthread-1.0.7, rack-1.1.0, passenger-2.2.14) sudo gem install passenger Activate Passenger in nginx, select option 2 to use nginx sources donwloaded above cd /var/lib/gems/1.9.1/gems/passenger-2.2.14/bin sudo ./passenger-install-nginx-module And this is the error message I got: /var/lib/gems/1.9.1/gems/passenger-2.2.14/ext/nginx/ContentHandler.c gcc -c -pipe -O -W -Wall -Wpointer-arith -Wno-unused-parameter -Wunused-function -Wunused-variable -Wunused-value -Werror -g -I src/core -I src/event -I src/event/modules -I src/os/unix -I /tmp/pcre-8.00 -I objs -I src/http -I src/http/modules -I src/mail \ -o objs/addon/nginx/StaticContentHandler.o \ /var/lib/gems/1.9.1/gems/passenger-2.2.14/ext/nginx/StaticContentHandler.c /var/lib/gems/1.9.1/gems/passenger-2.2.14/ext/nginx/StaticContentHandler.c: In function ‘passenger_static_content_handler’: /var/lib/gems/1.9.1/gems/passenger-2.2.14/ext/nginx/StaticContentHandler.c:71: error: ‘ngx_http_request_t’ has no member named ‘zero_in_uri’ make[1]: *** [objs/addon/nginx/StaticContentHandler.o] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/tmp/nginx-0.7.66' make: *** [build] Error 2 -------------------------------------------- It looks like something went wrong Please read our Users guide for troubleshooting tips: /var/lib/gems/1.9.1/gems/passenger-2.2.14/doc/Users guide Nginx.html I do not understand the reason of this error.

  • Parameters for selection of Operating system, memory and processor for embedded system ?

    - by James
I am developing an embedded real time system software (in C language). I have designed the s/w architecture - we know various objects required, interactions required between various objects and IPC communication between tasks. Based on this information, i need to decide on the operating system(RTOS), microprocessor and memory size requirements. (Most likely i would be using Quadros, as it has been suggested by the client based on their prior experience in similar projects) But i am confused about which one to begin with, since choice of one could impact the selection of other. Could you also guide me on parameters to consider to estimate the memory requirements from the s/w design (lower limit and upper limit of memory requirement) ? (Cost of the component(s) could be ignored for this evaluation)

  • Hue shift on youtube.com (but not when embedded!)

    - by Mala
This is easily the oddest problem I've yet had. When I'm on youtube, and I look at a video, the hue is all wrong. Pure red becomes pure blue, and all the other colors shift accordingly. Faces in particular are shades of blue so I call this "avatar mode". Avatar mode happens on any video I view while on youtube.com. BUT, if I view the same video when embedded, colors are fine! EDIT: OS: Gentoo Linux, happens in all browsers

  • A Reusable Builder Class for Ruby Testing

    - by Liam McLennan
My last post was about a class for building test data objects in C#. This post describes the same tool, but implemented in Ruby. The C# version was written first but I originally came up with the solution in my head using Ruby, and then I translated it to C#. The Ruby version was easier to write and is easier to use thanks to Ruby’s dynamic nature making generics unnecessary.  Here are my example domain classes: class Person attr_accessor :name, :age def initialize(name, age) @name = name @age = age end end class Property attr_accessor :street, :manager def initialize(street, manager) @street = street @manager = manager end end and the test class showing what the builder does: class Test_Builder < Test::Unit::TestCase def setup @build = Builder.new @build.configure({ Property => lambda { Property.new '127 Creek St', @build.a(Person) }, Person => lambda { Person.new 'Liam', 26 } }) end def test_create assert_not_nil @build end def test_can_get_a_person @person = @build.a(Person) assert_not_nil @person assert_equal 'Liam', @person.name assert_equal 26, @person.age end def test_can_get_a_modified_person @person = @build.a Person do |person| person.age = 999 end assert_not_nil @person assert_equal 'Liam', @person.name assert_equal 999, @person.age end def test_can_get_a_different_type_that_depends_on_a_type_that_has_not_been_configured_yet @my_place = @build.a(Property) assert_not_nil @my_place assert_equal '127 Creek St', @my_place.street assert_equal @build.a(Person).name, @my_place.manager.name end end Finally, the implementation of Builder: class Builder # defaults is a hash of Class => creation lambda def configure defaults @defaults = defaults end def a(klass) temp = @defaults[klass].call() yield temp if block_given? temp end end

  • Case Study: Polystar Improves Telecom Networks Performance with Embedded MySQL

    - by Bertrand Matthelié
Polystar delivers and supports systems that increase the quality, revenue and customer satisfaction of telecommunication services. Headquarted in Sweden, Polystar helps operators worldwide including Telia, Tele2, Telekom Malysia and T-Mobile to monitor their network performance and improve service levels. Challenges Deliver complete turnkey solutions to customers integrating a database ensuring high performance at scale, while being very easy to use, manage and optimize. Enable the implementation of distributed architectures including one database per server while maintaining a low Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). Avoid growing database complexity as the volume of mobile data to monitor and analyze drastically increases. Solution Evaluation of several databases and selection of MySQL based on its high performance, manageability, and low TCO. The MySQL databases implemented within the Polystar solutions handle on average 3,000 to 5,000 transactions per second. Up to 50 million records are inserted every day in each database. Typical installations include between 50 and 100 MySQL databases, up to 300 for the largest ones. Data is then periodically aggregated, with the original records being overwritten, as the need for detailed information becomes unnecessary to operators after a few weeks. The exponential growth in mobile data traffic driven by the proliferation of smartphones and usage of social media requires ever more powerful solutions to monitor, analyze and turn network data into actionable business intelligence. With MySQL, Polystar can deliver powerful, yet easy to manage, solutions to its customers. MySQL-based Polystar solutions enable operators to monitor, manage and improve the service levels of their telecom networks in over a dozen countries from a single location. The new and innovative MySQL features constantly delivered by Oracle help ensure Polystar that it will be able to meet its customer’s needs as they evolve. “MySQL has been a great embedded database choice for us. It delivers the high performance we need while remaining very easy to use, manage and tune. Power and simplicity at its best.” Mats Söderlindh, COO at Polystar.
