• Full page reload on Post/Redirect/Get ignoring cache control

  I have a page that loads a lot of images, css and javascript. I've added a far future Expires header and set Cache-Control to public on these external dependencies so they should be cached. But every time I do a Post/Redirect/Get chrome tries to load these again. This behavior is very similar to reloading the page. I've added ETags and handle the If-None-Match header which helps a bit, but it still generates too many useless requests. How do I tell chrome and safari to get the files from cache? chrome NOK safari NOK firefox OK ie OK Also see Full page reload on Post/Redirect/Get ignoring cache control on the google support forum.

• Perl references not returning correct values

  Hi, this is my first time asking a question here so apologies if I am not following any conventions correctly. I encountered a bug in some Perl code that basically lost any parameters in the URL after the first name-value pair and the solution was to use the URI::Escape function on the URL. After this change I decided to move code that does this to a Perl module (Utils.pm) so that any future changes only need to be made once in this file, rather than have to update every file that uses it. The problem I seem to have is that the user, passwd and priv variables don't seem to return the correct values - the system still allows you to sign in but it can't identify your name or the privileges that you have. Below is a link to a pastebin of the code I believe to be relevant to the problem. I believe it is to do with the references but any changes I make just break the page!   I'm a newbie to WPF and I'm developing a brand new windows desktop application and I would like your opinion on what WPF framework I should use. I know this question has been asked before, but the last question was asked at least several months ago. A lot has changed since then. Right now, I'm using MVVM Light which is more of a library than an actual framework, as the name suggests. I’m looking for something more comprehensive. I prefer a framework that I can use on future WPF projects. Consequently, it should be general purpose and productive. Any insights or suggestions?

• Creating a Web Wrapper for COM and OCX

  Hi guys, Today we have a windows application that, using an OCX, creates a web page (visible by a WebBrowser control in a small .NET WinForm application) and communicates through COM to the main application/client. (not relevant but this is Pascal) I'm currently responsible to re create this application in a web environment so we can have the same functionality shared through Web as the user can see the same in a Web Browser. The Windows application has almost 4 years on it and I need to re create everything from scratch, and all the bugs/features find in the future in the Windows Application I have to re create them again in the Web... Ohh well, you can see where this will end. I was thinking... is there any way I can create a Wrapper, even using 3rd party commercial objects, to: Communicate with the COM Object Can expose the content of the OCX (this in my most confortable language, ASP.NET C#, but other are welcome) I was thinking out loud, can this be accomplish with a Java Applet? Any ideas or any point to the right road will be appreciated.

The whitepapers of Windows Azure Platform say something like that: In its first release, the maximum size of a single database in SQL Azure Database is 10 gigabytes A few things are omitted in the technology’s first release, however, such as the SQL Common Language Runtime (CLR) and support for spatial data. (Microsoft says that both will be available in a future version.) I want to know that Microsoft had updated Windows Azure Platform and removed these limits or not? I decided to post this question here instead of Serverfault.com because it's more relative to programming than administration. Thank you

• Using Django Admin for a custom database solution

  A client wants to have a simple intranet application to manage his process. He runs a Quarry and wishes to track number of loads delivered per day and associated activities. Since I knew about Django's excellent Admin interface, I figured I could define the "Schema" in models.py and have Django Admin generate the forms. I did exactly that and the result is not bad at all. I've been able to customize the look and feel to suit the client's taste. Some questions: Is Django Admin the right choice for such a use-case? Will I run to problems in the future due to flexibility of the framework? Is there a better framework out there specifically designed for this use-case (general Database management for small businesses)? I prefer ones written in Python since I can hack it up to customize. • Is there any legitimate use for bare strings in PHP?

  This question got me thinking about bare strings. When PHP sees a string that's not enclosed in quotes, it first checks to see if it's a constant. If not, it just assumes it's a string and goes on anyway. So for example if I have echo $foo[bar]; If there's a constant called bar it uses that for the array key, but if not then it treats bar as a bare string, so it behaves just like echo $foo["bar"]; This can cause all kinds of problems if at some future date a constant is added with the same name. My question is, is there any situation in which it actually makes sense to use a bare string?

• emacs: force ido-mode to forget history...

  Hi, I wonder if I can keep ido from not remembering my history and only show completions for files that are in the current directory when I am searching for a file. I understand that this history feature is useful at times, but I often end up editing the incorrect file because I think I am editing file called 'abc.txt' in the current directory but in fact I am editing the file by the same name in another one that I previously visited (often happens when there is not an 'abc.txt' in the current directory, as I mistakenly assume). From reading the ido.el file I thought to set in my .emacs file (also evaluated these expressions in running emacs instance): (custom-set-variables '(ido-enable-last-directory-history nil) '(ido-record-commands nil) ) and deleted a file called .ido.last in ~/, but still it remembers some previous files I've visited before making these changes. How can I purge my previous history, and I am not entirely sure what the difference between the two variables above are but seems to have done the trick to keep ido from remembering files I visit in the future?   Putting sourcecode from tutorials or books online requires the author to add some kind of disclaimer or license (otherwise people would use it make lots of $$$ or break a power plant IT control system and sue you as author). But what is the right license or disclaimer statement ? Can I use BSD license with ... IN NO EVENT SHALL THE COPYRIGHT HOLDER OR CONTRIBUTORS BE LIABLE FOR ANY DIRECT, INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, EXEMPLARY, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES (INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, PROCUREMENT OF SUBSTITUTE GOODS OR SERVICES; LOSS OF USE, DATA,... We are talking about tutorials ! Released to teach and share knowledge. Or do I need to follow the (potentially different) licenses of the libraries I use ? Might be insignificant now but I feel we will face a license hunt in "public" sourcecode (aka OSS) in future, similar to companies/lawyers currently crawling the web for pictures with wrong copyright statement or infringing their IP (and suing someone using a picture in a personal blog,etc..).

• JMS Topic vs Queue - Intent

  I am trying to understand on the design requirements for using Queue, and could not find this question (with answer). My understanding: Queue means one-to-one. Thus it would be used in a special case (if not rare, very few cases) when a designer is sure that the message would be intended for only one consumer. But even in those cases, I may want to use Topic (just to be future safe). The only extra case I would have to do is to make (each) subscription durable. Or, I special situations, I would use bridging / dispatcher mechanism. Give above, I would always (or in most cases) want to publish to a topic. Subscriber can be either durable topic(s) or dispatched queue(s). Please let me know what I am missing here or I am missing the original intent?

• NSDictionary with specific property of plist

  Hi, I have a plist with key values. Each key represent a language, let's say 'it' 'en' ....ecc The value of each key is another key/value(=array) set. At startup I would like to create a dictionary by reading only a specific key. Let's say the locale of my iphone is 'it', then the init method would only parse it key, because the only way I found by now is to make a dictionary from the whole plist file and then another dictionary. But I can imagine this can become quite cpu consuming if I add more language in the future. thanks Leonardo

• Can a Flash-based CFGRID render basic HTML in the cells?

  (I'm very new to both Flex and CF -- more a .NET/ExtJS guy, so I'm a duck out of water.) I'm tweaking someone else's CFGRID code. It uses Flash format--HTML isn't an option since it would require redesigning the entire interface around the grid. Tha data I want to put in the grid have some very simple HTML elements-- <sub>, <sup>, and HTML entities like &deg;. I can imagine <i> or <b> might be there in the future. How can I tell a particular CFGRIDCOLUMN to render its contents as HTML? I've heard this is possible, but Google is not my friend tonight. Stuck with CF7 for a few more weeks, so if there are any CF8/CF9-specific solutions, please let me know those as well, but that won't help my immediate need.

• Need advice on organizing two WPF applications within one Visual Studio solution

  I have a WPF application (KaleidoscopeApplication) organized as follows: Solution (6 projects) Cryptography (DLL) Rfid (DLL) KaleidoscopeApplication (buildable "startup project") Basically, KaleidoscopeApplication contains a bunch of resources (sounds, images, etc) and your standard WPF junk (App.xaml, App.xaml.cs, other xaml and code). I need to create a new application that is very similar to Kaleidoscope, but I'm not sure of the best way to organize. This new app will need access to much of the same code and resources as Kaleidoscope. Preferably, I would like to create a new project in the solution, then simply use the "set as startup project" to pick which app I want to build. However, will I be able to access (share) the Resources folder of Kaleidoscope? I know I will be able to access much of the code if I simply add a reference to the project and include a "using Kaleidoscope". But the resources I'm not so sure about. Is this the right way to organize or am I asking for trouble in the future? Thanks in advance!

• Which layer should create DataContext?

  I have a problem to decide which layer in my system should create DataContext. I have read a book, saying that if do not pass the same DataContext object for all the database updates, it will sometimes get an exception thrown from the DataContext. That's why i initially create new instance of DataContext in business layer, and pass it into data access layer. So that the same datacontext is used for all the updates. But this lead to one design problem, if i wanna change my DAL to Non-LinqToSQL in future, i need to re-write the code in business layer as well. Please give me some advice on this. Thanks. • Unity3D, Torque3D, Google O3D, WebGl....which to choose?

  for development of interactive 3d web applications, which engine is recommended? I am aware that WebGL has been anounced to become standarized for all browsers in the near future (1~2 years). I am afraid that by investing time into a proprietary game engine such as Unity, torque would be not great once plugin-less open source 3d engines appear (webgl & 3D javascript). Is this a stupid thing to worry about ? Should I begin with Unity3D (it's demo's and tools were mind blowing).

• XStream or Simple

  I need to decide on which one to use. My case is pretty simple. I need to convert a simple POJO/Bean to XML, and then back. Nothing special. One thing I am looking for is it should include the parent properties as well. Best would be if it can work on super type, which can be just a marker interface. If anyone can compare these two with cons and pros, and which thing is missing in which one. I know that XStream supports JSON too, thats a plus. But Simple looked simpler in a glance, if we set JSON aside. Whats the future of Simple in terms of development and community? XStream is quite popular I believe, even the word, "XStream", hit many threads on SO. Thanks.

• Is there a tool for generating a DSL parser that does not require a runtime for the resultant parser

  I'm doing a lot of work with a DSLs at the moment and was wondering if anyone knew of a tool that could generate a parser for my bnf specification that does not require a run-time library (pure java source parser)? I'm committed to using XTEXT for a future Eclipse plug-in but I need a nice small version for my library itself and don't want to add another jar dependency. It seems that ANTLR requires a run-time to parse files and I performed a Google search with no avail. Can anyone help out? Thanks, Chris

• Determine iPhone user's country

  I need to determine at startup what country a user is in, for an iPhone application. Presumably I will have to turn on location services and do some sort of reverse geocoding. I don't really want to use a third party web service if possible, are there any other suggestions for determining country from what location services provides? Initially, I only need to check whether the user is inside the US or not, but this may change in the future to add more countries. I understand that location can not always be determined or the user may have location services turned off. Basically, I just need to know if the user is detected as being inside the US, in order to turn off a specific feature.

When I was writing the code I felt that the similarities between Action1 and Action2 should warrant some sort of generalization. I've provided the UML Class diagram with the relevant parts (except for the interfaces, which I describe in code below). • Can one .PHP file edit another?

  So I have a file for constants. I want to let user define them and then edit my .php filr with that global constants (not xml - real PHP file ) With such code for example <?php // Database Constants define("DB_SERVER", "localhost"); define("DB_USER", "root"); define("DB_PASS", "000000"); define("DB_NAME", "cms"); ?> How to edit this .php file from another PHP file? • Mysql out of disk space

  I have just finished developing a rails app which has a mysql db as a backend. The app is meant for high traffic and will store lots of information. I am planning to set up my own web server and host the site from it. If in future my disk space runs out i would want to expand by adding more space. But say if my mysql database is housed in my /disk0s1 and by adding a new drive i have more partitions (and hence more disk space), how then would i extend my database to store information on those partitions too, and at the same time prevent any information from being written on the original partition. Should i go for multiple databases? if so how? If i went for a hosting solution i wouldn't be bothering about this as i would just have to worry about making payments for the extra space :) I always wondered how space is added on-the-go by these webhosts. Is there any specific mysql configuration that i have to make?

I'll put it in this example: Imagine that there is no SMTP, and consequently, it is globally assumed and accepted that you can only send email to addresses on the same domain. The result would be the emergence of a single email service, let's call it emailbook.com, which we all have to subscribe to, if we really want to communicate with the world. This is what's happening with social networking today. You HAVE to use the same service your fiends/colleagues are using to talk to them. I would like to be able to put up my own social site, invite my friends who trust me, share amongst us, but still be able to share with the world at large. What are the chances of this scenario happening in the future? What does it take?

• Developer tool for configuring IIS6

  edit: IIS6; I'm not sure IIS7 is an option in the immediate future... From a developer angle, I am constantly changing my IIS settings, or need to merge settings from other teams into different VMs. The "Save Configuration to Disk" has never really worked well for me. Because we are making lots of small changes, web installation projects have never really worked either... Tools aimed for the web-admin aren't necessarily a good fit for the developer - we have different aims and needs. Does anyone have a script / tool / utility that would allow us to quickly configure IIS? In particular: remove everything (start clean) add a load of virtual directories, each mapped to application base paths set as an application set the app-pool (we'll assume the app pool already exists) set the ASP.NET version to 2.x if needed from some find of flat input list (any format would do).

• My first .net web app - should I go straight to MVC framework (c.f. ASP.net)

  Hi, I'm done some WinForms work in C# but now moving to have to develop a web application front end in .NET (C#). I have experience developing web apps in Ruby on Rails (& a little with Java with JSP pages & struts mvc). Should I jump straight to MVC framework? (as opposed to going ASP.net) That is from the point of view of future direction for Microsoft & as well ease in ramping up from myself. Or if you like, given my experience to date, what would the pros/cons for me re MVC versus ASP.net? thanks

• MSBuild - setting a reference path

  I have several assemblies my project is dependant upon. These are stored in the Project's directory under the "Dependencies" folder. So something like this. Solution - Project - Dependancies FunkyAssembly.dll - bin - Debug - Release SomeCode.cs I've referenced FunkyAssembly.dll using Browse and in project.csproj I see <Reference Include="FunkyAssembly"> <HintPath>Dependancies\FunkyAssembly.dll</HintPath> </Reference> So far so good - except after a release build FunkyAssembly.dll is copied to the Release directory (not a problem in itself) but then future debug builds will reference this copy rather than the copy in Dependencies. You can see this if you at Path in the reference properties. This means that if Dependencies\FunkyAssembly.dll is updated the build won't pick it up as its referencing the old copy in bin/Release. Any way to FORCE the damn thing to pick up Dependencies\FunkyAssembly.dll rather than HINT?
