  • Simple popup java form with at least two fields

    This is, I suppose, a very simple question for any Java programmer. My question is as simple as this: When the user clicks a button, I want to show a popup form that should have at least two JTextFields and two JLabels, so using JOptionPane.showInputDialog is not a possibility. Thanks.

  • Java CountDownLatch used to wait for JFrame to dispose

    I have referenced this previous question as well as other sources, but cannot get CountDownLatch to work correctly. Background: mainFrame creates new Frame called dataEntryFrame. When dataEntryFrame "Submit" button is clicked, record added to database and dataEntryFrame disposed. At this point, mainFrame should clear and reload a jList that shows all records. Issue: When dataEntryFrame loads, java freezes, dataEntryFrame components never load. I cannot get past this part... then, in the DataEntryFrame, CountDownLatch should only decrements after the submit button is clicked, successfully adds a record to a database table, and disposes itself. Or when the user clicks cancel...   • UI suggestions on how to display suggested tags for a given text to a user?

    I am writing a web-app that uses a tagging system to organize the user's submitted reports. Part of it uses ajax to get suggestions for tags to present to the user based on the content of their report. I am looking for suggestions on how to present this information for the user. I'm not quite certain what a friendly way to do this would be. Edit: Well, most of the responses here seem to be focused on the user typing in keywords. The idea I'm trying to define here is more towards presenting the user a set of suggested keywords that they may accept or decline without having to type a tag in manually.   • serial port close hangs in compact frame work 3.5

    I have developed the application for windows mobile 5.0 and .net compact framework 2.0 sp2. This application communicates to the hardware device using serial port. This application works fine in windows mobile 5.0 based PDAs. I have handled data received event to get the data from serial port. But when I run my application on windows mobile 6.1 and .net compact framework 3.5, my application hangs on serial port close API call. There are many workarounds mentioned in the .net compact framework blog like (closing the com port on different thread, opening the port in the beginning of the application and close once application exists, polling for data instead of event handling), but nothing is working consistently.

  • Blackberry invalidate field not causing a repaint

    I'm writing a Blackberry app. I have a custom list field where I can select an item in the list which pushes the edit screen onto the stack. I edit the item and save, and when I pop that screen off so I am back on my list screen, I want to view the update I just made reflected in the list. I have done this on other screens which just had LabelFields and it worked fine. However, with the list screen, calling invalidate() seems to do nothing. I know the value has saved correctly through print lines, and I see the paint() method in the listfield is getting called. But the only way I can get the list field to update is to delete it from the screen and re-add it. That seems wrong.   • Is it possible to provide a resize indication (resizer-grip) on a form without adding a status bar?

    I would like to have a resize indication on a windows forms Form (the same resize-grip as when you have a status bar). I do not want to add a status bar to the form - that would break the design of the form. The form can have various controls inside that are docked (Fill). I have not found any solution to this besides drawing the resize indication in lower right corner of every control, which is not very feasible. Is this possible without adding a picture of the resize grip to every control that can be docked in the form?

  • What is the relation between ContentPane and JPanel?

    I found one example in which buttons are added to panels (instances of JPanel) then panels are added to the the containers (instances generated by getContentPane) and then containers are, by the construction, included into the JFrame (the windows). I tried two things: I got rid of the containers. In more details, I added buttons to a panel (instance of JPanel) and then I added the panel to the windows (instance of JFrame). It worked fine. I got rid of the panels. In more details, I added buttons directly to the container and then I added the container to the window (instance of JFrame). So, I do not understand two things. Why do we have two competing mechanism to do the same things. What is the reason to use containers in combination with the panels (JPanel)? (For example, what for we include buttons in JPanels and then we include JPanels in the Containers). Can we include JPanel in JPanel? Can we include a container in container?

    I have gcc installed in c:/programfiles (also set as a path variable), and i have all the necessary files for gtk from http://www.gtk.org/download-windows.html, glib,gtk,pango,atk and cairo. Although I have no clue as to how to compile a c program using gtk with the gcc compiler. How do I set everything up so that it works?. (I don't know where each zip file goes.?) basically I don't really know where start.

In Xaml, to add an animation around the clock would be easy. How could i make it such that at runtime, my application reads a layout.xaml file. Loads it and parses all the gradients and xaml. But still be able to use my widget in there.   • How to allow resizing of QMessageBox in PyQt4

    I'm using the nice feature in QMessageBox to optionally show detailed text to the user. However, the window after expansion is still fairly small, and one immediately tries to resize the window so more of the details are visible. Even after setting what I think are the proper settings it won't allow resizing. Here's the relevant snippet of PyQt4 code: mb = QMessageBox() mb.setText("Results written to '%s'" % filename) mb.setDetailedText(str(myData)) mb.setSizePolicy(QSizePolicy.Expanding, QSizePolicy.Expanding) mb.setSizeGripEnabled(True) Am I missing a step and/or is this at all possible?

    How should I be using color in my application? I have over a 100 different forms (windows) in my application, and the default windows grey seems like a bad choice to me. One school of thought says pick one neutral color, and use the same one everywhere. Another school of thought says pick a set of neutral colors, and use them same ones within a group of form (e.g., shipping screens might be light green, receiving screens light orange, user administration screens light blue, etc.). The final school of thought says make every form different. We've got millions of colors, why not use them? What should I do and why?

  • How to use a CTabCtrl in a MFC dialog based application ?

    I need to do something which i expected to be was simple - create a tab control which has 2 tabs, implying 2 modes of operation for my app. When user clicks on Tab1, he'll be presented with some buttons and textboxes, and when he clicks Tab2, some other input method. I noticed that there was a CTabCtrl class thats used in MFC to add tabs. However, once I added the tab ctrl using the UI designer, I couldn't specify how many tabs there'll be using property window. Searching on the net, I found some examples but all of them required you to derive from CtabCtrl , create 2 or more child dialogs etc and to write your own custom class. My question is, since I want to do something so basic, why couldn't I do it using the familiar Add Event handler/Add member variable wizard and then handle everything else inside my app's class ? Surely, the default CTabCtrl class can do something useful without needing to derive from it ?

    This will be a bit subjective, I'm afraid, but I'd value the advice of the Collective. Our web application lists documents that users can download; standard file navigator stuff: Type Name Created Size ----------------------------------- PDF Doc 1 01/04/2010 15 KB PDF Doc 2 01/04/2010 15 MB Currently we list the file size as text, but I'd like to improve this by having some way of showing visually whether the file is tiny, normal or huge. The reason for this is so that users can scan the list quickly and spot files that are likely to take a long time downloading. My options currently are: Bigger font sizes for bigger files (drawback: the layout can become untidy) Icons (like a wi-fi signal strength indicator; drawback: harder to scan) Keep all sizes in KB so the number of zeroes indicates size (drawback: users have to calculate the "friendly" size in their heads) I know this is quite a minor thing, but I'd appreciate anyone's thoughts on the matter!

  • Problems with .net and toolbar, menu & status bar rendermode (blue) and standard form (grey)

    Hiya, I'm a bit of a newbie to .NET so please ignore my ignorance. If you look at the above image (a complete prototype, ignore black bits :)) you will see lovely menus, toolbars & statusbars all using windows XP render mode and in a funky blue. Look at the form, labels, checkboxes and other buttons and you see horrible old school windows grey. These components don't have a render mode. My question: is there any way to show everything in XP style or do I have to chose new components? Thx. A.

    I'm building an application but I'm artistically challenged and I'd rather not spend my time writing widgets (e.g. ability to collapse/expand/close/drag-drop) if there is already controls available. I've worked with the Microsoft AJAX Control Toolkit - but these tools still require a lot of work to get a working widget (which in my case, won't look too pretty). The CollapsiblePanel is pretty nice - but then you have to program in the minimize button, close button, maximize button, etc. Looking for suggestions that will help me design better UI faster...

  • Blackberry - Disable Save option in BasicEditField ??

    I am using a basiceditfield to take input from the user to do some simple string search. But if i type a few letters and wish to go back without continuing the search, it automatically asks me whether to save the contents of the field. I don want this to happen. Can i in any way disable the "Changes made!-save-discard-cancel" option in basiceditfield(or any editfield for that matter)????please help!!!
