  I am testing BinaryFormatter to see how it will work for me and I have a simple question: When using it with the string HELLO, and I convert the MemoryStream to an array, it gives me 29 dimensions, with five of them being the actual data towards the end of the dimensions: BinaryFormatter bf = new BinaryFormatter(); MemoryStream ms = new MemoryStream(); byte[] bytes; string originalData = "HELLO"; bf.Serialize(ms, originalData); ms.Seek(0, 0); bytes = ms.ToArray(); returns - bytes {Dimensions:[29]} byte[] [0] 0 byte [1] 1 byte [2] 0 byte [3] 0 byte [4] 0 byte [5] 255 byte [6] 255 byte [7] 255 byte [8] 255 byte [9] 1 byte [10] 0 byte [11] 0 byte [12] 0 byte [13] 0 byte [14] 0 byte [15] 0 byte [16] 0 byte [17] 6 byte [18] 1 byte [19] 0 byte [20] 0 byte [21] 0 byte [22] 5 byte [23] 72 byte [24] 69 byte [25] 76 byte [26] 76 byte [27] 79 byte [28] 11 byte Is there a way to only return the data encoded as bytes without all the extraneous information?

• IntellIJ editor doesn't appear

  I updated my IntellIJ install to the latest version (11.1.4) and now the Editor window doesn't appear. Double-clicking on the file, jump-to-source, nothing happens. No error message, it just doesn't appear. If I double-click on an xml layout file the preview window works, but no Editor window. Have installed and reinstalled; went back to an earlier version and it doesn't work there either. I'm at a loss. Any ideas? Update: Editor works if I create a new project.   I've been trying to find a solution for ages with no success. On our app, customers submit a form and on the next page we process it. Sometimes though the data never arrives. This seems to happen for just a few of our customers. Seems to happen with IE7 and using a proxy. • Can I use two different look and feels in the same Swing application?

  I'm using the Flamingo ribbon and the Substance Office 2007 look and feel. Of course now every control has this look and feel, even those on dialog boxes. What I want is something like in Office 2007, where the ribbons have their Office 2007 look, but other controls keep their native Vista/XP look. Is it possible to assign certain controls a different look and feel? Perhaps using some kind of chaining or a proxy look and feel?

• Node.js vs PHP processing speed

  I've been looking into node.js recently and wanted to see a true comparison of processing speed for PHP vs Node.js. In most of the comparisons I had seen, Node trounced Apache/PHP set ups handily. However all of the tests were small 'hello worlds' that would not accurately reflect any webpage's markup. So I decided to create a basic HTML page with 10,000 hello world paragraph elements. In these tests Node with Cluster was beaten to a pulp by PHP on Nginx utilizing PHP-FPM. So I'm curious if I am misusing Node somehow or if Node is really just this bad at processing power. Note that my results were equivalent outputting "Hello world\n" with text/plain as the HTML, but I only included the HTML as it's closer to the use case I was investigating. I certainly think Node has a real niche that it could fit well, however with these test results (which I really hope I made a mistake with - as I like the idea of Node) lead me to believe that it is a horrible choice for even a modest processing load when compared to PHP (let alone JVM or various other fast solutions). As a final note, I also tried running an Apache Bench test against node with $ ab -n 20 -c 20 http://speedtest.dev/ and consistently received a total test time of greater than 0.900 seconds.

I've look all over and from what I can tell it's not possible to add to the context menu in Office 2007. This doesn't seem right.   We have a complex aggregate (sensitive names obfuscated for confidentiality reasons). The root, R, is composed of collections of Ms, As, Cs, Ss. Ms have collections of other low-level details. etc etc R really is an aggregate (no fair suggesting we split it!) We use lazy loading to retrieve the details. No problem there. But we are struggling a little with how to save such a complex aggregate. From the caller's point of view: r = repository.find(id); r.Ps.add(factory.createP()); r.Cs[5].updateX(123); r.Ms.removeAt(5); repository.save(r); Our competing solutions are: Dirty flags Each entity in the aggregate in the aggregate has a dirty flag. The save() method in the repository walks the tree looking for dirty objects and saves them. Deletes and adds are a little trickier - especially with lazy-loading - but doable. Event listener accumulates changes. Repository subscribes a listener to changes and accumulates events. When save is called, the repository grabs all the change events and writes them to the DB. Give up on repository pattern. Implement overloaded save methods to save the parts of the aggregate separately. • How does Bitmap.Save(Stream, ImageFormat) format the data?

  I have a non transparent, colour bitmap with length 2480 and width 3507. Using Bitmap.GetPixel(int x, int y) I am able to get the colour information of each pixel in the bitmap. If I squirt the bitmap into a byte[]: MemoryStream ms = new MemoryStream(); bmp.Save(ms, ImageFormat.Bmp); ms.Position = 0; byte[] bytes = ms.ToArray(); then I'd expect to have the same information, i.e. I can go to bytes[1000] and read the colour information for that pixel. It turns out that my array of bytes is larger than I anticipated. I thought I'd get an array with 2480 x 3507 = 8697360 elements. Instead I get an array with 8698438 elements - some sort of header I presume. In what format the bytes in my array stored? Is there a header 1078 bytes long followed by Alpha, Red, Green, Blue values for every byte element, or something else?

Similarly for other types of request/response. I just wanted to be sure if Socket.receive() can read(untill) large serialized objects completely. But while i clone the object this exception forces me to load all the EntitySet< references with the Customer object, which might be too much and slow down the application speed. Any suggestions?

I have tried registering the events with this method. private void InitPPT() { app.SlideShowNextSlide += new Microsoft.Office.Interop.PowerPoint.EApplication_SlideShowNextSlideEventHandler(app_SlideShowNextSlide); app.PresentationClose += new Microsoft.Office.Interop.PowerPoint.EApplication_PresentationCloseEventHandler(app_PresentationClose); app.SlideShowEnd += new Microsoft.Office.Interop.PowerPoint.EApplication_SlideShowEndEventHandler(app_PresentationClose); } And with this method that I found here: private void InitPPT() { IConnectionPointContainer oConnPointContainer = (IConnectionPointContainer)app; Guid guid = typeof(Microsoft.Office.Interop.PowerPoint.EApplication).GUID; oConnPointContainer.FindConnectionPoint(ref guid, out m_oConnectionPoint); m_oConnectionPoint.Advise(this, out m_Cookie); } Do I need to register some dll's on the client machine or am I missing something.

• ClickOnce installing prereqs out of order

  I have an Outlook plugin that I am deploying using ClickOne (right click on project file, choose publish, etc...). I recently created a blank XP VM with only Office 2007 installed. My ClickOnce installer recognizes that I need my three prerequisites (Office 2007 PIAs, .Net 3.5 Sp1, and VSTO 2010 tools). They download fine but then the installer tries to install the Office 2007 PIAs first and my install fails because .Net 3.5 Sp1 and VSTO 2010 tools are prerequisites for the Office 2007 PIAs. How can I change the install order of my prerequisites? Also, are there better options for deploying ClickOnce's applications?
