• unknown filsystem with grub rescue caption cannot boot

  I just recently partitioned my hard drive and I got this error when booting Ubuntu on that drive. unknown filesystem. With the grub rescue terminal. I did some research and tried to download super grub disk but I cant seem to fix it with that. I have two hard disks. One with Windows Vista on it and the other with Ubuntu which is the one I partitioned. There was 100GB reserved for all the Ubuntu partitions that I needed and the rest was split into two partitions, one for backup folders for my Windows machine and the other for music production which is the one that I created. The space used to created that was shrunk from my backup partition so I didn't mess with any of the Ubuntu partitions. As of now there are a total of 5 partitions. I also downloaded Rescatux which is another Super Grub Disk for Grub 2 not knowing which grub I had. It still didn't work. In Super Grub Disk I tried to swap the hard disk because that was what was said to do in order to fix the grub, that didn't work it said it was unsuccessful. I even tried to unplug the Windows hard disk and run Super Grub Disk and that wasn't successful either. Is there another way I can fix this? Please any help would be greatly appreciated. I would like to have a nice step by step response.

• How do I install Postgres Graphical Installer?

  I am a newbie in using Ubuntu (more precisely never used linux except the production deployment ). Now I choose to hold a grip on the system and intalled a latest 11.10 Ubuntu in my 32 bit Intel** desktop. In this machine **I have a 'administrator' user 'tusar'. I want to install the PostgreSQL graphical version so downloaded this file postgresql-8.4.9-1-linux.bin from here Now If run the file with ./filename command (refuses if I am not root), it opens up the graphical interface and completes the installation (creates user postgres and ask for password, wont complete if I dont give valid password). I checked with /etc/inint.d/postgresql-8.4 status , that postgres is running. But the problem is I am unable to open the GUI (I installed it in /opt/Postgresql ), its telling permission denied even if I am logged in as 'tusar'. Then I tried using the su postgres command and it directly changed the user without password. Now if I run the psql , createdb , its prompting me to install the postgres-client-package but this utilies are already installed and I can view them in my /opt/Postgresql/8.4/bin folder. I can run query through my JDBC utility programs but unable to use neither terminal nor the graphical interface (although I can see pgAdmin3 is there ). Urgent help needed. I have used this guide for the installation.

• Detecting Units on a Grid

  I am making a little turn based strategy game in pygame, that uses a grid system as the main map to hold all the characters and the map layout. (Similar to Fire Emblem, or Advance Wars) I am trying to determine a way to quickly and efficiently (i.e. without too much of a slow down) check if there are any characters within a given range of the currently selected character. So to illustrate: O = currently selected character X = squares within range Range of 1: X X O X X Range of 2: X X X X X X O X X X X X X Range of 3: X X X X X X X X X X X X O X X X X X X X X X X X X Now I have to tell the user who is in range, and I have to let the user choose who to attack if there are multiple enemies in range. If I have a 5x5 grid, filled with " " for empty and numbers for the characters: [ ][ ][ ][ ][4] [ ][1][ ][ ][ ] [ ][ ][ ][ ][ ] [ ][ ][2][3][ ] [ ][ ][ ][ ][ ] Depending on which character the user selects, I would like to show the user which other characters are in range. So if they all had a range of 3: 1 can hit 2 2 can hit 1 or 3 3 can hit 2 4 cannot hit anyone. So, How do I quickly and/or efficiently run though my grid and tell the user where the enemies are? PS- As a bonus, if someone could give an answer that could also work for a minimum distance type range, I would give them a pat on the back and a high five, should they ever travel to Canada and we ever meet in life. Until Aug. 31, the public gets to vote on submissions to South by Southwest (SXSW) Interactive in Austin, Texas, in March 2013. This is a thought-leading software conference discussing the up-and-coming trends in industry. I have attended the interactive and the music portions of SXSW before, but I have never attempted a submission. This is my first year trying.  I am building on the themes from this conversation on simplicity with Jeremy Ashley for Oracle OpenWorld 2012. The SXSW session will be a chance to share best practices for moving designs that focus on simplicity successfully through an organization. • Stuck With grub rescue> console

  Here is the background of my issue: I just recently installed the latest version of Ubuntu along side with Windows 8 Enterprise. However upon checking the disk size, it seems that some of the portions of the hd memory were gone so I decided to check the disk partition and have seen that is was being used by another file system. Thinking that the Ubuntu takes it boots stuff from my drive C: , I deleted that partition and formated so I can use it to store some movies, music etc. Now, as I switch on my machine, I am stucked with: error: unknown filesystem grub rescue> I googled a lot and saw the following command which seems no to me like sudo, chainloader etc, all of these command only returns unknown command in the console. What I just wanted is to boot from my Windows 8 OS. Just to add, I can't open the BIOS menu so I could choose what media to boot. As I open my machine it automatically takes me to grub rescue console. Here are the thing I already have: Ubuntu Installation Disk Windows 8 System repair Disk I just don't know how to boot into these things. Let me know what to do.

Existing certification holders should note that these retirements suspend the delivery of any further exams, but do not affect your certification. If you currently hold a certification earned by one of these exams, your credential remains fully valid. • JDK bug migration: bugs.sun.com now backed by JIRA

  The JDK bug migration from a Sun legacy system to JIRA has reached another planned milestone: the data displayed on bugs.sun.com is now backed by JIRA rather than by the legacy system. Besides maintaining the URLs to old bugs, bugs filed since the migration to JIRA are now visible too. The basic information presented about a bug is the same as before, but reformatted and using JIRA terminology: Instead of a "category", a bug now has a "component / subcomponent" classification. As outlined previously, part of the migration effort was reclassifying bugs according to a new classification scheme; I'll write more about the new scheme in a subsequent blog post. Instead of a list of JDK versions a bug is "reported against," there is a list of "affected versions." The names of the JDK versions have largely been regularized; code names like "tiger" and "mantis" have been replaced by the release numbers like "5.0" and "1.4.2". Instead of "release fixed," there are now "Fixed Versions." The legacy system had many fields that could hold a sequence of text entries, including "Description," "Workaround", and "Evaluation." JIRA instead only has two analogous fields labeled as "Description" and a unified stream of "Comments." Nearly coincident with switching to JIRA, we also enabled an agent which automatically updates a JIRA issue in response to pushes into JDK-related Hg repositories. These comments include the changeset URL, the user making the push, and a time stamp. These comments are first added when a fix is pushed to a team integration repository and then added again when the fix is pushed into the master repository for a release. We're still in early days of production usage of JIRA for JDK bug tracking, but the transition to production went smoothly and over 1,000 new issues have already been filed. Many other facets of the migration are still in the works, including hosting new incidents filed at bugs.sun.com in a tailored incidents project in JIRA.

• What is the Best way to learn c# programming and capability to do anything with C#?

  I browsed all the answers given in Stackoverflow,i couldn't find my answer that's why i am writing this, so please don't mark this a duplicate. My case i want to get the capability of doing anything in C# from building applications to solving problems. I searched for and tried to read books. Then one of the experts said, reading books will not make any good for you, for learning you have to solve problems i.e. real world problems in C#, he gave me some sample problems, which i previously did in C++, i started doing, but the thing is that i know the internal logic of solving the problem or the algorithm to solve. But i don't know how to imepelement them using C# efficiently. so, the gap is, i can't think in C#, I know the message to passed but don't the exact way to pass it. I did a program to solve a problem, then find out there are much easier ways of doing it wherever i was doing it in tougher way. So, can you guys(C# experts) please enlighten me, what i need to get hold of the language and get the ability to code in C# proficiently?

• Should a stack trace be in the error message presented to the user?

  I've got a bit of an argument at my workplace and I'm trying to figure out who is right, and what is the right thing to do. Context: an intranet web application that our customers use for accounting and other ERP stuff. I'm of the opinion that an error message presented to the user (when things crash) should include as much information as possible, including the stack trace. Of course, it has to start with a nice "An Error has occurred, please submit the below information to the developers" in large, friendly letters. My reasoning is that a screenshot of the crashed application will often be the only easily available source of information. Sure, you can try to get a hold of the client's systems administrator(s), attempt to explain where your log files are, etc, but that will probably be slow and painful (talking to the client representatives mostly is). Also, having an immediate and full information is extremely useful in development, where you don't have to go hunting through the log files to find what you need on every exception. (But that could be solved with a configuration switch.) Unfortunately there has been some kind of "Security audit" (no idea how they did that without the sources... but whatever), and they complained about the full exception messages citing them as a security threat. Naturally, the clients (at least one that I know of) has taken this at face value and now demands that the messages be cleaned. I fail to see how a potential attacker could use a stack trace to figure anything out he couldn't have figured out before. Are there any examples, any documented proof of anyone ever doing that? I think that we should fight this foolish idea, but perhaps I'm the fool here, so... Who's right?

• SFTP permission denied on files owned by www-data

  I have a pretty standard server set up running Apache and PHP. An app I am running creates files and these are owned by the Apache user www-data. Files that I upload via SFTP are owned by my own user charlesr. All files are part of the www-data group. My problem is that I cannot modify or overwrite any of the files via SFTP which are owned by www-data, even though charlesr is part of the www-data group. I can modify the files no problem via a SSH session. So I'm not sure what to do. How do I give my SFTP session permissions to modify www-data owned files? For a bit of background, these are the notes I wrote for myself when setting-up the server: Now set up permissions on `/var/www` where your files are served from by default: $ sudo adduser $USER www-data $ sudo chgrp -R www-data /var/www $ sudo chmod -R g+rw /var/www $ sudo chmod -R g+s /var/www Now log out and log in again to make the changes take hold. The previous set of commands does the following: 1. adds the current user ($USER) to the `www-data` group; 2. changes `/var/www` to belong to the `www-data` group; 3. adds read/write permissions to the group that `/var/www` belongs to; 4. sets the SGID bit on `/var/www`; this final point bears some explaining. And then I go on to explain to myself what setting the SGID bit means (i.e. all files created in /var/www become part of the www-data group automatically). Btw, nothing feels sweeter than going back and reading your own detailed notes on the what, how and why of your own server set up when trying to troubleshoot like this - I recommend it highly to all beginners like myself :-)

I even tried to unplug the Windows hard disk and run Super GRUB Disk and that wasn't successful either. Is there another way I can fix this? Please any help would be greatly appreciated. I would like to have a nice step by step response.

• How-to get the binding for a tab in the Dynamic Tab Shell Template

  The Dynamic Tab Shell template does expose a method on the Tab.java class that allows you to get access to the ADF binding container for a tab. At least in theory this works, because in practice this call always returns a null value (a bug is filed for this). To work around the problem, you can use code similar to the following to get the ADF binding for a specific tab DCBindingContainer currentBinding = (DCBindingContainer) BindingContext.getCurrent().getCurrentBindingsEntry(); DCBindingContainer templateBinding = (DCBindingContainer)currentBinding.get("ptb1"); DCBindingContainer tabBinding= (DCBindingContainer)templateBinding.get("r"+0);  In the code line above, the tabBinding variable will hold the binding reference to the first tab in the dynamic tab shell template. Note that the tab doesn't need to be visible for this (which has to do with how the template works).  "ptb1" is the template reference name in the PageDef file (Executable section) of the template consumer view. Check this string in your page before using this code. If it differs, change it also in the code above. "r0" is the binding reference of the first tab in the template. Te last tab is referenced by "r14".

• TechEd 2010 - New Orleans

  We're a little more than half way through TechEd 2010 in New Orleans and I am having a hard time finding interesting breakout sessions to attend.  Laura Chappell has completed all of her sessions, and Andy Malone is almost done.  Laura's sessions on Wireshark have been amazing.  Andy is always entertaining and informative.  I did sit through a session this afternoon on IPv6 that was interesting.  I will spend the final day in the Hands on Labs area working through some PowerShell, and Communication Server 14 labs.  The speakers for two of my breakouts had written interesting books.  I went to the conference bookstore to pick them up and found both to be sold out.  They did offer to ship the books to me with the TechEd 20 percent discount. I'm not real sure who thought it would be a good idea to hold a conference in June in New Orleans.  It has been HUMID.  On top of that TechEd 2011 will be in my hometown, Atlanta.

• Why nautilus quicklist is not working?

  None of my bookmarks (Documents, Pictures, Download, Dropbox, Ubuntu One, Music, Public) are correctly shown but they won't open if I right click on the Home icon and select them. The only ones who work are Home and Open A New Window. I've read similar questions (http://askubuntu.com/questions/184504/unity-home-quicklist-not-working-when-nautilus-is-closed and unity home quicklist not working) but my problem seems different... • Turn-based Client-Server Card Game - Unicast (TCP) or Multicast (UDP)

  I am currently planning to make a card game project where the clients will communicate with the server in a turn-based and synchronous manner using messages sent over sockets. The problem I have is how to handle the following scenario: (Client takes it turn and sends its action to server) Client sends a message telling the server its move for the turn (e.g. plays the card 5 from its hand which needs to placed onto the table) Server receives messages and updates game state (server will hold all game state). Server iterates through a list of connected clients and sends a message to tell of them change in state Clients all refresh to display the state This is all based on using TCP, and looking at it now it seems a bit like the Observer pattern. The reason this seems to be an issue to me is this message doesn't seem to be point-to-point like the others as I want to send it to all the clients, and doesn't seem very efficient sending the same message in that way. I was thinking about using multicasting with UDP as then I could send the message to all the clients, however wouldn't this mean that the clients would in theory be able to message each other? There is of course the synchronous aspect as well, though this could be put on top of the UDP I guess. Basically, I would like to know what would be good practice as this project is really all about learning, and even though it won't be big enough to encounter performance issues from this I would like to consider them anyway. However, please note I am not interested in using message oriented middleware as a solution (I have experience with using MOM and I'm interested in considering other options excluding MOM if TCP sockets is a bad idea!).

• How do I get Graphics drivers / bluetooth / card reader working on an Acer Aspire V3-571G?

  A couple of days ago I bought an Acer Aspire V3-571G laptop without a system installed on it. The only thing that was there was Linux Linpus. I created a bootable CD with Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit - I read that my processor was 64 bit and that it might be a good configuration for my gear (I'm not especially fluent with all the computer stuff, still trying to learn) and replaced Linpus with Ubuntu. Everything seemed to work fine, but there're few exceptions to that which came pass my way. My bluetooth doesn't work. It seems to be switched on, but when I check my system settings the button is actually off, and I can't drag it 'perminently' to the 'on' position. Tried a couple of commands I found on the net, none of them helped and there was no word whatsoever in my BIOS settings about enabling bluetooth. My card reader has some serious problems with copying more than one file at a time. I tried to put some music on my phone through a MicroSD card adapter (because my bluetooth doesn't work) and it got stuck every single time I copied an album on it. • How to represent an agile project to people focused on waterfall [closed]

  Our team has been asked to represent our development efforts in a project plan. No one is unhappy with our work or questioning our ability to deliver, we are just participating in an IT cattle call for project plans. Trouble is we are an agile team and haven't thought about our work in terms of a formal project plan. While we have a general idea of what we are working on next we aren't 100% sure until we plan an iteration. Until now our team has largely operated in a vacuum and has not been required to present our methodology or metrics to outside parties. We follow most of the practices espoused in Extreme Programming. We hold quarterly planning meetings to have a general idea of the stories we are going to work on for a quarter. That said, our stories are documented on 3x5 cards and are only estimated at the beginning of the iteration in which they are going to be worked. After estimation we document the story in Team Foundation Sever. During an iteration, we attach code to stories and mark stories as completed once finished. From this data we are able to generate burn down and velocity charts. Most importantly we know our average velocity for an iteration keeping us from biting off more than we can chew. I am not looking to modify the way we do development but want to present our development activities in a report that someone only familiar with waterfall will understand. In What Does an Agile Project Plan Look Like, Kent McDonald does a good job laying out the differences between agile and waterfall project plans. • Understanding math used to determine if vector is clockwise / counterclockwise from your vector

  I'm reading Programming Game AI by Example by Mat Buckland. In the Math & Physics primer chapter there's a listing of the declaration of a class used to represent 2D vectors. This class contains a method called Sign. What do the values of y*v2.x and x*v2.y that are being compared actually represent? I'd like to have a solid understanding of why this works rather than just accepting that it does without figuring it out. I feel like it's something really obvious that I'm just not catching on to. • Tender vs. Requirements vs. Solution Design

  Conventionally, which of the above documents is deemed to hold the most weight when it comes to system acceptance? I recently had a conversation along these lines: It was argued that the initial requirements / tender documentation should be used to determine system acceptance. It was said that the solution design only serves to describe the way in which the system will solve the problem, not the problem it will solve. Furthermore, it was argued that if requirements are missed during solution design, the requirements should be referenced during system acceptance and that if any requirements were missed then the original tender should be referenced. Conversely, I suggested that - while requirements may be based on the original tender - they supersede it once agreed with the stakeholders. Furthermore, during solution design, analysis is performed to address and refine these initial requirements, translating them into a system capable of meeting the actual requirements. Once signed off by the relevant users, this solution design should absolutely represent the requirements (by virtue of the fact that it's designed upon them) but actually supersedes them as the basis for system acceptance. Is one of the above arguments more valid than the other?

• Upgrading specific pieces of KDE 4.x

  So this is going to be one of those "is this even possible?" questions. I need to upgrade a piece of my KDE from 4.8.5 to 4.9. Specifically, I need to upgrade Gwenview from the 2.85 version in KDE 4.8.5 to 2.9 version in KDE 4.9. It seems trivial but it's actually a fairly big deal for me. I recently upgraded my Ubuntu to 12.04, and that upgraded my Gwenview to 2.8x. The issue is that the Gwenview 2.8 releases accidentally broke a feature that I rely upon very heavily. It's a known bug that was corrected in 2.9. Unfortunately, the only package available in Synaptic is 4.8.5, which contains Gwenview 2.85. To make matters worse I'm not sure that I can simply take my whole KDE to 4.9 as I am running an older Toshiba Satellite with the Intel 945GMA chipset that I was shocked managed to hold up under the weight of 12.04 as it is. Well, actually it didn't. I had to install Cairo Dock as Unity 2D was hopeless with this chipset. But anyway, I desperately need to get to Gwenview 2.9 without the potential system-wide implosion of upgrading KDE to 4.9. Possible?

• What's your most controversial programming opinion?

  This is definitely subjective, but I'd like to try to avoid it becoming argumentative. I think it could be an interesting question if people treat it appropriately. The idea for this question came from the comment thread from my answer to the "What are five things you hate about your favorite language?" question. I contended that classes in C# should be sealed by default - I won't put my reasoning in the question, but I might write a fuller explanation as an answer to this question. I was surprised at the heat of the discussion in the comments (25 comments currently). So, what contentious opinions do you hold? I'd rather avoid the kind of thing which ends up being pretty religious with relatively little basis (e.g. brace placing) but examples might include things like "unit testing isn't actually terribly helpful" or "public fields are okay really". The important thing (to me, anyway) is that you've got reasons behind your opinions. Please present your opinion and reasoning - I would encourage people to vote for opinions which are well-argued and interesting, whether or not you happen to agree with them.
