    I saw that on so many blogs. Lots of the people that were dealing with ASP.NET tend to play with Ruby on Rails after working hours. And It is just a matter of last one or two years. Why is it like that? Is it because when ASP.NET MVC showed up people become more open-minded - having joy with programming again they realize that some other folks had that many years ago, and they do not want to miss what they currently have?

    I am trying to rescue from a `require': no such file to load in ruby in order to hint the user at specifying the -I flag in case he has forgotten to do so. Basically the code looks like: begin require 'someFile.rb' rescue puts "someFile.rb was not found, have you" puts "forgotten to specify the -I flag?" exit end I have expected the rescue part to take over execution in case someFile.rb was not found, but my assumption was wrong.

    I have an attribute in my AR:B that is not serializeable. o = Discussion.find(6) Marshal.dump(o) TypeError: no marshal_dump is defined for class Proc from (irb):10:in `dump' I know the culprit and what I want is to set this variable to nil before any serialization takes place.     I have a ruby method (deactivate!) that is on an activeRecord class. However, I can't seem to find where that method is declared. There have been numerous developers on this project, so it could be anywhere. There is a deactivate! on an unrelated class, but it doesn't seem to get called. Any ideas how to find all the superclasses for an instace, or where to find the code for deactivate!?

According to the files' properties, I am not the owner and cannot change the permissions. All of my other local gems are accessible without permissions problems, so this is odd. Any help is very much appreciated!

    Hello, I just installed the Ruby interpreter and created the file test.rb. In the Folder Options, I created the rb file type and an action called Run and assigned the application C:\Ruby192\bin\ruby.exe "%1"" So It's possible for to get into the Windows XP command line and run the script simply by doing this: C:\>test.rb But when I need to send parameters to the script, I can't simply do the following: C:test.rb parameter1 parameter2 I'll have to do the following instead: C:\Ruby192\bin\ruby.exe c:\test.rb parameter1 parameter2 I just noticed that I'm able to edit the action the following way to pass more parameters: C:\Ruby192\bin\ruby.exe "%1" "%2" "%3"" That allows me to give 2 parameters to the script, but for some cases I need to pass a handful of parameters and it doesn't seem right for me to append "%5" "%6" "%7" ad nauseam. What's the canonical way to do it?

But I think a work like that deserves more. Full colour illustrations. Main text on the left-hand page, sidebars on the right. (Stick in a few cartoons, or a slice of onion, when there aren’t any sidebars.) A built-in MP3 player and headphones for the soundtrack, but made completely out of telephone wires. Whilst that might be wishing for too much, have you (ever) seen any decent print versions of the book available?

I'm having a nightmare rebuilding some native ruby gems and I'm wondering whether this is part of the problem -- part of this machine says its 64 bit but another part 32 ... as far as I can tell? Under 'About this Mac' it says 'Intel Core 2 Duo' which Apple says is 64 bit. So why, after doing sudo gem pristine --all am I still getting this kind of error? dlopen(/Applications/Rails/ruby/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/nokogiri-1.4.2/lib/nokogiri/nokogiri.bundle, 9): no suitable image found. Did find: /Applications/Rails/ruby/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/nokogiri-1.4.2/lib/nokogiri/nokogiri.bundle: mach-o, but wrong architecture - /Applications/Rails/ruby/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/nokogiri-1.4.2/lib/nokogiri/nokogiri.bundle Specifically I had removed nokogiri and reinstalled it.   • Are the svn ruby bindings provided as a gem?

    I see a couple dozen gems that relate to svn, but what little documentation I can find on any of them shows that they are command-line wrappers and misc helpers. (svn-command, svn-hooks, etc.) I've seen code in the wild that does things like: require 'svn/core' and SVN.Repos.add(...), but the author of that module pulled his svn ruby tools via apt-get. This would not be an option for me, as I'm developing a windows/osx tool. Which gem am I after? From there, I'm happy to dig through code in lieu of documents, but with a call to gem query --name-matches svn --remote returning about 30 hits, I need to narrow it down a bit first.

    Hi all I'm very new to Ruby on Rails so please go easy! I've uploaded the whole application to the server (Dreamhost) and gone through the steps. But when I try to run it I get the following error: failed to connect to any given host:port (Mongo::ConnectionFailure) I have installed the Mongo gem; but maybe I haven't got it configured correctly? I know you can't use localhost for describing where a Dreamhost mysql database is; might it be something like that?   • Surgical slave reads for Ruby on Rails, mulitple databases.

    Greetings, I'm currently working on a multiple database rails application. I want to off load the SELECT queries on to the slave databases for only SOME of the databases or specific models. The issue is that in places, we swap out the current database connection and put in a different one for a short time; to load fixtures or to handle sharding. Does anyone have any recommendations on a ruby gem that 1. will split select/(sql writes) with a considerable amount of control. We want to handle just some models and we are looking for a neat surgical fix. 2. does not monkey around with activerecord. 3. is still being maintained. TIA -daniel

    In OptionParser I can make an option mandatory, but if I leave out that value it will take the name of any following option as the value, screwing up the rest of the command line parsing.     I have a basic Squid server setup and I am trying to use Ruby's Net::HTTP::Proxy class to send a POST of form data to a specified HTTP endpoint. I assumed I could do the following: Net::HTTP::Proxy(my_host, my_port).start(url.host) do |h| req = Net::HTTP::Post.new(url.path) req.form_data = { "xml" => xml } h.request(req) end But, alas, proxy vs. non-proxied Net::HTTP classes don't seem to use the proxy IP Address. my remote service responds telling me that it received a request from the wrong IP address, ie: not the proxy. I am looking for a specific way to write the procedure, so that I can successfully send a form post via a proxy. Help? :)

    In Ruby, it seems that a lot of coerce() help can be done by def coerce(something) [self, something] end that's is, when 3 + rational is needed, Fixnum 3 doesn't know how to handle adding a Rational, so it asks Rational#coerce for help by calling rational.coerce(3), and this coerce instance method will tell the caller: # I know how to handle rational + something, so I will return you the following: [self, something] # so that now you can invoke + on me, and I will deal with Fixnum to get an answer So what if most operators can use this method, but not when it is (a - b) != (b - a) situation? Can coerce() know which operator it is, and just handle those special cases, while just using the simple [self, something] to handle all the other cases where (a op b) == (b op a) ? (op is the operator).
