• Can I use RVM to maintain a single version of Ruby for all users?

  I love RVM. I realize that the main use case for it is letting different users switch between different versions of Ruby. But let's say I'm deploying a Rails app to a server and I just want a single version of Ruby running. In particular, I want 1.9.2, which is a breeze to install with RVM but a pain without it. Is there a way that I can say "I want this to be the canonical Ruby installation for all users" (along with all of its gems) without having to create a bunch of symlinks by hand and change them every time I update to a newer Ruby release?

• Is there anything like Zope Page Templates for Ruby on Rails?

  I have a Ruby on Rails app that I built myself, but which needs a redesign by a professional designer. I know most designers just give you Photoshop mockups and slices, but I would like to hire someone to implement the design as well, which means rewriting the css style sheets and the erb and haml templates. The problem is that I want someone else to implement the redesign without exposing my business logic code to the redesign implementer. Also, I wish there was a way to allow a designer to implement a redesign on a Ruby on Rails site without having to know anything about Ruby on Rails. Are either of these scenarios possible using any combination of software tools?   Playing with Ruby and Ruby-Pandoc. Seems like a nice tool, if I can get it to work. I'd like to convert some Markdown text (with embedded lists and other fanciness) to Rich Text. • How to get the ruby.exe Return Code in CMD Bat?

  I'm trying to get the return value of a ruby script in cmd.exe. The ruby script will return -1 if exception is caught and 0 if success. rescue Exception => ex puts ex.message returnvalue = -1 else returnvalue = 0 ensure puts returnvalue in the cmd batch, calling the script using ruby.exe ruby tt.rb 1 %1 But I'm not able to retreive the returnvalue in the cmd batch file (e.g. using %errorlevel%). Is there any way to do this? thanks!

  I know about Omondo's plugin for live code-UML synchronization in Eclipse, but I was wondering if there was any other tool/IDE/IDE-extension that has some form of live graphical code representaiton (structural, flow, call-stacks, dependencies, etc.). I'm essentially looking for richer visual feedback on code while programming, not really looking for purely graphical code editors, though round-trips would be nice (edit graphically, code gets modified; edit code, representation gets modified). If you don't know about any graphical live documentation tool for code, maybe someone that can coexist with code, such as MySQL Workbench or Enterprise Architect.

• Alt Key + Mouse Scroll is the New Text Zoom In/Out in NetBeans

  When the text zoom in/out, via "Ctrl Key + Mouse Wheel", was introduced in editors in a recent version of NetBeans IDE, many people cheered. Others booed because the combination "Ctrl Key + Mouse Wheel" is often pressed accidentally, especially when the user scrolls in the editor while intending to use some Ctrl shortcut, such as paste, which is Ctrl-v. So, in NetBeans IDE 7.2, the text zoom in/out is now "Alt Key + Mouse Wheel": http://netbeans.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=212484 Remember that the text change only persists for as long as the file is open. So, if you've accidentally resized the text (i.e., in the current situation, prior to 7.2, where unintended side effects may happen because of Ctrl key usage), you can just close the file and reopen it to get the text size back to the way it was before.

• How much time do you spend actually developing vs. infrastructure activites?

  When I'm working I feel like most of the time I'm not doing actual work. For example after making a change to the code in order to test it, I have to first build the project, and start the server(say JBoss). Upon testing, I find that there is another small issue. So I bring down the server, make the changes, build again and start up the server again.The building and bringing the server up/down is not very useful work. Also, the IDE (lets say Eclipse) does things such as updating Maven indexes and building the workspace which take some more time to get things done. Have you come across this kind of situation? Do you have tips on how to overcome/bypass this? Any features on the IDE/build tools that can be helpful? Any architecture/application design/technology that attempts to overcome this?

• Getting Rails Application Running Under IronRuby Rack

  Anyone else playing with ironruby? I have successfully got the IronRuby.Rails.Example project running on my local machine under IIS 5.1. I am now attempting to get my own demo rails site running in the same way. My web.config is slightly different from the example project. I am attempting to only use what was distributed with IronRuby 1.0 and what I have installed using gems. I am getting the following error which doesn't give me a lot to go on: D:/demo/config/boot.rb:66:in `exit': exit (SystemExit) After trying many different things, I think it is having a problem finding gems. I have attached my web config and ironrack.log. Does anyone have pointers on what I am doing wrong? • Which is the best free ide/plugin for struts2?

  Hello friends, I have just learnt struts 2 and now I have taken up a full fledged project in it. I learnt the basics of struts 2 in Netbeans with it's struts2 plugin. But I am not at all happy with it, as it is very basic and I end up doing most of the work. It is obviously better than plain-vanilla text editor, but still not at all near to what netbeans provides for springs and hibernate. I know because netbeans provides native support for springs and hibernate, it is meant to be better. I don't mind changing my IDE if i get better support for struts2! So my questions are Please list all the free IDEs where native support for struts2 is provided. And if possible please compare them. Please list all the plugins that are available for eclipse for struts2 development. I have heard there are better plugins in eclipse. Also, if there are better plugins in any other IDE (other than netbeans or eclipse of course), please list them giving links. Please give me some tips which I'll need before starting a full blown project in Struts2. I haven't worked on any project on Struts2. • What IDE setup and workflow is used for OSGi development?

  I made quite a few easy OSGi test projects in Eclipse RCP. My typical workflow would always be: Make 3 different projects: APIproject, Clientproject and Serverproject Edit the MANIFEST.MF of APIproject to export the api package Edit the MANIFEST.MF file of Clientproject and Serverproject to add the required API package Choose "Run as..." "Plugin Framework" OSGi console starts in eclipse and everything seems to work I also tried wiring things by using Declarative Services, which worked well like this too. Now recently I wanted to try out iPOJO. The problem is that I get the feeling that I've been doing my OSGi development the wrong way. Can it be that I should instead make 1 project en make it work like no OSGi is involved. And then afterwards, just export each package to its own bundle by means of (for instance) the BNDL tool? Should development be done in a normal Eclipse (java, not RCP) or any other java IDE for that matter? So that's why I have these questions: What IDE setup is normally used to develop OSGi with iPOJO? And what is the normal workflow to be used when developing OSGi projects (maybe with iPOJO)?

• A good example project to 'prove' my skills [closed]

  I've been a commercial programmer for about 3 years now but all of my commercial work is based upon PHP (with Cake PHP, Wordpress and Wildfire) and ASP.Net (on C#, including MVC 3, Umbraco and Kentico) as well as plenty of HTML/CSS/jQuery examples to show. A future employer has asked me to show my Ruby on Rails potential. I've done Ruby on Rails before for fun, but nothing worthy of commercial showing. What I'd like to know, from a group of programmers, is what would be a good 'portfolio demo' piece for you? What have you seen in the past that impressed you? What are you looking for? For Ruby lead developers specifically, what sort of things are you looking to see in the code? Cheers!
