• Can SysPrep (or anything else) be used to make a Win XP partition from another computer bootable?

  I've used Paragon Backup and Recovery Free as recommended to me in my other question, to backup my C: (Win XP) and D: (installed apps) partitions. Before taking the rather scary step of breaking the RAID 0 array on which it's currently installed, and restoring to one of the individual drives, I'd quite like to test the restorability of the imaged partitions. I've restored them on to a spare disk in another computer, which of course won't boot from them in their current state. Is it possible to use SysPrep (or another tool) on the restored partitions, to make it bootable?

• MSSQL 2008 is claiming the firewall is blocking ports even from local machine

  I was just hoping to step through a couple queries to see how the temp tables are interacting and I'm getting this message. The windows firewall on this machine is currently blocking remote debugging. Remote debugging requires that the debugging be allowed to receive information from the network.Remote debugging also requires DCOM (TCP port 135) and IPSEC (UDP 4500/UDP500) be unblocked Even when I walked over to the actual machine and tried running the debugger, I'm still getting the same message. Am I missing something or does the debugger try to run remotely even from the local machine? Since this was meant to be just a quick check, I don't need instructions on how to open up the firewall, just hoping there is a way to run the debugger locally instead.

• trying to set up wireless router, failing

  Hi, I am trying to set up Netgear's wireless-n WNR2000 router, following their oversimplified 5- step process for plugging in wires, and I'm not having any success. It comes down to: once everything is wired and turned on in the correct order, all of the LEDs match the image they give of 'what should be lit up', but their setup disk still doesn't find the router. They have a site to set up the router manually, www.routerlogin.net, which I cannot navigate to, even while wired directly to the router. http://192.168.1.1 doesn't connect to anything, either. The interesting part: i get ping replies from Google's DNS server at 8.8.8.8 while this is set up. but cannot connect to any web site by name, since the router's DNS isn't set up. One thought is that the router and modem both have the same IP address, so it's conflicting, but I'm not sure how I'd resolve that. Any ideas?

• When should .local be used?

  So, I've set up a few Win Servs in my time and always did the .local thing when there was a router that sepearated my internal from external networks. Now that I'm setting up an *nix box for the first time, does this concept still apply? Do I still want my FQDNs (/etc/hostname) to show .local or .com for all my machines (mixed: linux servers, win workstations) inside of my network. This question comes in context of always having Active Directory hold my hand every step of the way, where now I'm setting up an DNS machine manually.

• files appearing empty or only partially transferred on FTP server.

  firstly, apologies if this question has been asked and answered before, but I have had a look through related queries and found nothing identical to this. I have had a website for a few years, and have never had any problem uploading any files. But today, when i went to transfer a new html file onto the server...i did so, the file arrived. so i browsed to the file in my browser to check the page as i always do, and the browser wouldn't acknowledge it. after repeated attempts to transfer it, it finally seemed to go over, but only 1/4 of the file size..4KB out of 16KB...so only the top of the page would be viewable in my browser...ive tried transferring on a number of ftp clients and no love... my expertise on this is limited and i cant really think of the next step, the server isnt full, so...im just stumped. any ideas? any and all feedback is great appreciated.

• HP Pavillion dv6 laptop - 15 beeps on startup and a black screen?

  Usual story - girlfriend's step-brother's laptop is broken. I don't know a huge amount about what occurred before it broke, but I do know the following: When you try to turn the laptop on, it beeps 15 times exactly. The screen remains black. The LED on the Caps Lock key flashes continuously. If left on, the laptop never boots - as far as I can see. If left on, on a stable surface with decent ventilation for a relatively short period of time, the laptop (below keyboard, but not where the RAM/HDD are) gets very hot. I've tried doing what most websites appear to recommend for similar problems, which is to disconnect AC and battery then hold the power button down for a minute before reconnecting the AC and trying to turn the laptop on - no difference. EDIT I've also tried re-seating the RAM, to no avail. Any ideas? Thanks in advance,

• Preserve the state of the start screen

  What would I need to do in order to cause the start screen to stay the way it was the last time I saw it when I go back to it? I've noticed that every time I leave the start screen it resets back to the beginning, this means that I need to scroll back to where I was to get the same view. I don't want to change the order of the applications on the start screen to accommodate this, I would much prefer it if I could find a way to make the start screen stay the way it was so I can move on from there and also if there was a way to jump to the beginning or the end of the list that would be great. I imagine I can just use the search feature to find a specific program, but that's just an extra step, almost as bad as having to scroll.

• TOP CPU usage for whole system

  I am using a machine that has using cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep processor | wc -l returning 8 I am trying to load the server using a load generator that I wrote, and capture the behaviour of TOP command for idle (as the software that is tested on server runs on ROOT). Doing the load as an increasing step function, I capture the idle state every second, and see the result. Strange thing is that when I increase the load every 1 minute, the idle state is infact increasing (??). This honestly does not make sense .. I thought with more load, the idle state will decrease, and the cpu usage will increase. Is there any reasonable explanation for this behaviour, maybe for the server utilization itself? Thanks for any feedback -- ok, no idea for the down vote. but I try to find this behaviour a lot, can not find any reasonable things to explain this ..

• How to add entries to combobox in Word XP

  I'm trying to follow the following instructions to add a combobox to a form and add some values to it for the user to pick: http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/create-forms-that-users-complete-in-word-HP005230270.aspx I've created a .dot and then dragged a combobox onto the document. When I double-click on it though, it opens up the VBA editor. Do I have to add the items programatically as per the following question How do I add a combobox in Word? or is it possible to do this using the UI? The other question/answer refers to creating a form. Is there a step I've missed between creating a .dot to then create a form somehow before adding form elements to it? • Sysprep.exe completely missing on both of my Windows 7 64bit machines. How should I find a workaround?

  The sysprep.exe file is simply missing on my Windows 7 64bit machine. I tried to find it on another computer, but it wasn't found there either. I can't understand it, because on a lot of forums and even in the official articles there are a lot of references to this tool. I've checked system, system32, sysWOW64 folders, and even made a full search with Total Commander. I only found a sysprep folder in the system32 folder, but inside was only an en-US subfolder, which was empty. Then I thought I will give my Windows PE bootdisk a try, which I've created a while ago. No result, only the same empty en-US folder is present there as well. Please if anyone knows what's happening, point me to the right direction. I need to clone my system and I'm stuck right at the first step...

• Running multiple lines through a server.

  I am looking to buy numbers in bulk on DIDx.net. After I purchase the numbers in a particular area code, I want to forward those numbers to other numbers that are outside of that area code. This way it will be seen as a local call versus long distance. I have the customers but I don't have the system I need. I have read about Asterisk, VOIP, SIP, and BYOH. But I have no clue what will be the best system for me. Does anyone have any idea what my next step should be when it comes to hardware and software? Or what type of operating system I should use? I basically want to set up a system like GoogleVoice & Phonebooth.

• How can I increase the size of the hard disk used by my Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) vm?

  In Virtual Machine Manager admin console, I used the 'New virtual machine' wizard and created a machine from an existing template. When I got to the Configure Hardware step, I selected the primary hard disk (which is a dynamic) disk and tried to increase it's maximum size, but this control is disabled so I can't increase it. It's not big enough for my purposes. how do I increase the maximum size of the hard-disk? Thanks. Edit: I am able to add a second hard disk of a size I specify. That's not useful though as I'm trying to install some software, some of which insists on being on drive C.

• Power outage, Server 2K3 remains on "applying computer settings"

  My reward for clicking the "test" button in the APC UPS software was that it completely cut the power to my SQL server. The server promptly rebooted, the SQL service is running (verified by the app on another server that queries it), but the GUI has remained on "applying computer settings" for 20 minutes and counting, and it forbids RDC connections. Since SQL is up, it is fulfilling its key role, but it's obviously not right. What step to take next? Wait longer? Hardware is a Dell Poweredge 2850, internal RAID10.

  I seem to have this use-case quite often: Send a mail to A, with B and C in cc Realize you forgot to say something in the mail. You now want to send a 'reply mail' (including your original mail as quotation) to A, with B and C in cc. To do that: go to the 'Sent mails' folder, and press the 'Reply all' button Problem: Now you have yourself in the 'To:' field, and A, B and C in the cc fields. Question: Is there a better way (maybe an extension?) to do step 4, and correctly have A in the To: field, and B and C in cc.

  I finally have the swapspace project installed and running (via init.d). The purpose is to have a dynamically re-sizing swap partition. I'm clueless however on how to use it. It has good documentation but just does not go into that last step. How to I configure a swap partition using swapspace? The process is probably the same for any 3rd party program that would provide a swap space implementation to the kernel. I know this was intended to run as a process because the project provides an init.d script.

  I would like to specify what you asked about in how iceweasel misses on in hopes that you are interested in considering the answer to be valid considering the package should run efficient to a novice user especially when getting a first impression on a new software, browser, or package they are given by default. First let me say that I am very grateful for all debian has and continues to do for its user base and I am not complaining, only hoping that in mentioning such it will eventually aid in improving the disappointing experience iceweasel gave me in multiple ways right from the start of using it. I am sure tremendous amounts of hard work went into making it work as well as it does, and tremendous effort continues to go into IW like the rest of the package and distros such as this... Having said that, I do aim to keep my examples simple as possible but also explained in enough detail as to not leave out important info to get a full idea of my issue... (Thanks for understanding if I sound novice to debian, I am but continue to learn and advance by trial and error each day, and of course the wonderful help from all the great minds available here and there)... Well, my bone to pick (unfortunately as I disdain being a complainer when so much has been done for us, the end user) with IW is mainly 3 immediately noticed problems in offering me a smooth test drive (completely normal browsing conduct of your average user, I should indicate) as soon as I started out a task using IW (heading directly to google images and searched for a few web sized images, then saved a few (no more than 800 to 900 in dimensions, typically a normal procedure I would imagine) I experienced a horrendous reoccurring freeze and lag time that almost left me to kill the process more than once on each attempt and continued to compound so that by a few attempts later, even 1 single image save locked up the entire browser, ultimately giving up on my procedure in its simplicity with a bit of aggravation, if there was something I had done wrong on my end pre-attempt or during installation. Secondly, visiting video player sites in this case youtube will not allow for any video feed to play whatsoever and again, experienced a slight freezing that eventually dissipated as long as I didn't attempt to press play or reload another video trial... Very annoying and possibly related to my first issue (which could rely on my own lack of knowledge in setup config, but that troubles me if so).... Lastly as another user has stated already, in which brought you to ask them what exactly seemed to be the problem in the first place is also my final straw that broke the weasel's back, leading me here to find a solution to a updated version of firefox... being that iceweasel (an apparent build of firefox 17.x.x) leaving the user to find themselves out of luck when installing their favorite or much useful add-ons or plugins that aid their task or normal usage online.... As the other user clearly stated... there is almost zero options and barely any luck to find compatible plugins with such an outdated version still being used... I can only imagine if as a novoice or standard user to linux... and beginner to debian (which I am all for btw!) if I am discovering major conductivity issues which hinder normal user conduct right off the bat... that there is probably a bundle or more of security vulnerabilities that would unravel to me if I continued to give mr Hommey's package any further attention, or interest in continuing to use... This is a deal breaker on any account, unless all 3 of these issues stated are due to a very n00berish setting or lack thereof (which if that is the case, such was not properly stated for beginner in any place available by following installation tutorials such as LVM installers, which I felt lacked a clear understanding to someone who is trying to learn why and how, rather than, a fix to a potentially broken out of box installation... I really think that is irrelevant in any case however, as there is much step by step support regarding that kind of thing, just saying... its very challenging, along side a job to keep deadlines on, and the need to learn a better and more costomizible system, that was not as popularized when I became a dev via windows (OK OK I know thats a huge mistake and now I am way off original topic but anyway) Thanks very much for taking the time to read over this, and I hope it honestly gives you a few good and valid reasons for users wanting and seeking a way to get around iceweasel altogether... Finally, if I am missing something vital that renders all I've stated invalid or useless, please feel free to shove that elephant in the room my direction! • Power outage during disk wipe. What do I do now?

  I was using Roadkil Diskwipe on an external hard drive and the power went out. I had removed it from any outlet connection by the time power was restored to prevent power-spike damage (it's on a surge protector, but I didn't want to rely on that). My question is, where do I go from here? Obviously I don't care about preserving any data currently on it, I just want to make sure the drive itself is not terminally damaged. I'm running chkdsk (full), but I don't know if that's the correct step to assessing any damage. If it makes any difference, the hard drive was unallocated at the time of the outage, as Diskwipe requires that for it to run. Also, could something like this cause latent problems with the drive itself (i.e. serious issues that I won't be aware of when testing it now). I'd appreciate any program recommendations if chkdsk is not the most appropriate diagnostic route. Thank you.

• PHP session files have permissions of 000 - They're ununsable

  I kept having issues with a Document Management System I'm trying to install as, at the first step of the installation process, it would error with: Warning: Unknown: open(/tmp/sess_d39cac7f80834b2ee069d0c867ac169c, O_RDWR) failed: Permission denied (13) in Unknown on line 0 Warning: Unknown: Failed to write session data (files). Please verify that the current setting of session.save_path is correct (/tmp) in Unknown on line 0 I looked in /tmp and saw the sess_* files have the following permissions ---------- 1 vanced vanced 1240 Jan 20 08:48 sess_d39cac7f80834b2ee069d0c867ac169c All the session files look like this. So obviously, they're unusable by PHP and it's causing me lots of problems. How can I get PHP to set the correct permissions? I've tried changing the directory which php.ini uses to /tmp/phpsessions and the same thing occurs. The directories are a+rwx.

• How to combine wildcards and spaces (quotes) in an Windows command?

  I want to remove directories of the following format: C:\Program Files\FogBugz\Plugins\cache\[email protected]_NN NN is a number, so I want to use a wildcard (this is part of a post-build step in Visual Studio). The problem is that I need to combine quotes around the path name (for the space in Program Files) with a wildcard to match the end of the path. I already found out that rd is the remove command that accepts wildcards, but where do I put the quotes? I have tried no ending quote (works for dir), ...example.com*", ...example.com"*, ...example.com_??", ...cache\"[email protected]*, ...cache"\[email protected]*, but none of them work. (How many commands to remove a file/directory are there in Windows anyway? And why do they all differ in capabilities?)

• Change filtering method used by Firefox when zooming

  I often zoom in a step or two when reading long texts in Firefox, but when I do so the images become super blurry. It's not really a big deal but when reading text on images (mathematical equations mostly), it's a bit distracting. It seems as if they are scaled using only bilinear interpolation. If I scale an image the same amount in for example Paint.NET or Photoshop the result is much better. Is there any way to change the filtering method used by Firefox to bicubic or another better method? I am Using Firefox 3.5 on Windows BTW.

• VPN stuck on Verifying Username and Password

  I'm building a new machine and everything is working correctly, except that I can't log on to my VPN. It hangs at the "Verifying username and password..." step, then returns after about 30 seconds claiming Error 721. I have another machine sitting next to this one with the VPN connection configured exactly the same, connecting just fine over the same wifi network, so I'm convinced that there is no server or firewall problem. The VPN works fine. This machine simply can't connect to it given the correct credentials and configuration. Any suggestions?

• Is there a Google Authenticator desktop client?

  I am using Google Authenticator for 2-step authentication. I like how I can use a code and verify my account using my phone: I realize that the app was designed to run on a device other than a computer to increase security for the computer (in case that it is lost or stolen), but I would like to know if there is a way I can run Google Authenticator on my Macbook. Now, per the Google Authenticator Page it will not run on a desktop: What devices does Google Authenticator work on? Android version 2.1 or later BlackBerry OS 4.5 - 6.0 iPhone iOS 3.1.3 or later However there are several emulators for developers and so I wonder if it is possible to run one of these emulators and then run Google Authenticator with that. I do realize this is not a best practice - but I'm less worried about my laptop getting stolen and more worried about someone just hacking the account. So my question is this: Is it possible to run it on the desktop, even though it is not meant to be / not recommended?

  Hi, I m a newbie to kernel programming. I am trying to boot the kernel 2.6.36 on my ECG machine.It was working perfectly on 2.6.33.2. • How to disable the Windows 8 lock screen, without disabling the password?

  Windows 8 now has a slide-away lock screen like so many other OSes designed for a touch interface. However on a non-touch PC/laptop this is just an extra annoying step in logging in. There is an option to disable it, but this also turns off the password requirement. Is there a way to disable the lock screen, and have Windows wake up directly to the password entry screen? Often when pressing a key to hide it there will be a noticeable delay before password entry is accepted, and no indicator, so one can easily lose the first character or so that they attempt to type, thus failing the login attempt.
