• Can't get NSDate to work correctly

  Hello, having a strange issue, must be something I'm just not seeing. I set up a variable in the .h NSDate *checkIn; @property (nonatomic, retain) NSDate *checkIn; I'm setting a variable to todays date in the initWithNibName: checkIn = [NSDate date]; I also did synthesized it as well. Now later on in my program I use it to build a tablecell with the following line cell.textLabel.text = [dateFormatter stringFromDate:checkIn]; This line kills the simulator, BAD_EXEC. If I put in a checkIn = [NSDate date]; above it, it works fine. So I'm thinking the variable isn't being stored from when I set it in the initWithNibName: Not sure why though, as my strings I do the same way are all working fine from method to method. What am I missing?

• Undetermined type conversion in VB.NET 2008

  I figured this would be a quick google, but extensive searching hasnt yielded any results. Everything about type conversion seems to dance around this concept. I want to get the type of variable "a", and make a new variable named "b" of that type. Otherwise I could have "a" as a type already declared and "b" simply as an Object, then try to cast "b" to the type of "a". Dim a As Integer Dim b As Whatever a Is OR TryCast(b, Whatever a Is) I would also like to make the conversion using a variable representation of the type, but cant find info on how to do that either. Sorta like: Dim a As Integer Dim b As Object Dim t As Type t = a.GetType() TryCast(b, t) Realizing I'm completely misusing TryCast here, I'm mostly trying to get my goal across. I figured it would be an easy quick thing to do but I cant really find any specific info on it. Any ideas?

  hi, i am using rawurlencode($url_variable) while passing to a script.. when i receive the variable in the script ,before passing this variable to mysql ,i was doing mysql_real_escape_string . now the problem is like when there is a variable like $url_variable = "Off-St.Mark's-Road" ...after i do mysql_real_escape_string it become slike Off-St.Mark\\'s-Road . which is creating a problem in mysql query ... how i get over this...rawurlencode is necessary to pass variables to the script and i want to do mysql_real_escape_string to make the data safe...

  Grep acts differently depending on what kind of quotes I surround the regex with. I can't seem to get a clear understanding of why this is. Here is an example of the problem: hamiltont$ grep -e show\( test.txt variable.show(); variable.show(a); variable.show(abc, 132); variableshow(); hamiltont$ grep -e "show\(" test.txt grep: Unmatched ( or \( hamiltont$ grep -e 'show\(' test.txt grep: Unmatched ( or \( I am just assuming there is some proper way to enclose the regex with single/double quotes.   If you've ever used Reflector, you probably noticed that the C# compiler generates types, methods, fields, and local variables, that deserve 'special' display by the debugger. For instance, local variables beginning with 'CS$' are not displayed to the user. There are other special naming conventions for closure types of anonymous methods, backing fields of automatic properties, and so on. My question: where to learn about these naming conventions? Does anyone know about some documentation? My objective is to make PostSharp 2.0 use the same conventions. Thank you!

  I'm seeing something weird in my actionscript code I have two classes foo and bar, bar extends foo. In a model class I have a foo member variable, I assign an bar object to the foo variable. But after the assignment the foo variable is null. • What guides or standards do you use for version control in your team ?

  I'm starting to do a small amount of development within my company. I'm intending to use Git for version control, and I'm interested to see what guidelines or standards people are using around version in their groups, similar to coding standards are often written within the group for the group. I'm assuming there will be things like; Commit often (at least every day/week/meeting etc) Release builds are always made from the master branch Prior to release, a new branch will be created for Testing and tagged as such. only bug fixes from this point onwards. The final release of this will be tagged as such and the bug fixes merged back into the trunk Each developer will have a public repo New features should get their own branch Obviously a lot of this will depend on what cvs you're using and how you've structured it.   I have two entity models hooked up to two different databases. However, the two databases both have a table named 'brand', for example. As such, there is a naming conflict in my models. Now, I've been able to add a namespace to each model, via Custom Tool Namespace in the model's properties, but the generated code in my Silverlight project will try to use both namespaces, and come up with this, Imports MyProject.ModelA Imports MyProject.ModelB Public ReadOnly Property brands() As EntitySet(Of brand) Get Return MyBase.EntityContainer.GetEntitySet(Of brand) End Get End Property giving me this exception: 'Error 1 'brand' is ambiguous, imported from the namespaces or types 'MyProject.ModelA,MyProject.ModelB'. Has anyone had experience with naming conflicts like this using RIA services? How did you solve it?

• Newlines not being interpreted when passed to php via the command line

  I have a PHP script that I'm invoking from another shell script that sends an automated email with a message generated from the shell script. Problem is, when I send the message all the newline characters are printed into the message. How do I get them to be interpreted? sendmail.sh: /path/to/phpscript/sendmail.php "Some Message With Newlines\nHello World.\n" sendmail.php: $message = $argv[1] . "\nNewline"; $smtp->send($to, $from, $message); The odd thing is the \n after the $argv variable is interpreted and actually prints Newline on a new line, but the newlines in the $argv variable don't, I have tried wrapping the variable in double quotes among other things but so far to no avail.

• What is the magic behind perl read() function and buffer which is not a ref ?

  I do not get to understand how the Perl read($buf) function is able to modify the content of the $buf variable. $buf is not a reference, so the parameter is given by copy (from my c/c++ knowledge). So how come the $buf variable is modified in the caller ? Is it a tie variable or something ?   I'm starting learning javascript for a project, I've found a script that does a part of what I need to do, I'd like to know how it works, both for me and in case it needs to be modified. Originally it was used inside the page, now I've put it in a file on its own and does not work anymore, so I'm dividing it in parts, because I fail to get the whole thing. Here is what bother me most for now: 1) Is this a declaration a function? What is its name? How can it be invoked?   I am trying to get cells from excel into csharp but not sure what's the best variable type to read it into. If I make the variable a string and the cell value is a double I get a parse error. If I make the variable double then when the cell is a string it wont work.   I am trying to use notepad++ as my all-in-one tool edit, run, compile etc. I have jre installed, i have setup my path variable to .../bin directory. When I run my "Hello world" in notepad++ , I get this message: java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError: test_hello_world : Unsupported major.minor version 51.0 at java.lang.ClassLoader.defineClass1(Native Method) at java.lang.ClassLoader.defineClassCond(Unknown Source) ......................................... I think the problem here is about versions, some version of java may be old or too new. how do i fix it? should i install jdk , and setup my path variable to JDK instead of jre? difference between PATH variable in jre or jdk?

• Why AutoResetEvent and ManualResetEvent does not support name in the constructor?

  On .NET Framework 2.0 AutoResetEvent and ManualResetEvent inherit from EventWaitHandle. The EventWaitHandle class has 4 different constructors. 3 of the constructors support giving a name to the event. On the other hand both ManualResetEvent and AutoResetEvent do not support naming and provide a single constructor that receives the initialState. I can simply inherit from EventWaitHandle and write my own implementation of those classes that support all the constructor overloads, but I don't like to re-invent the wheel if I do not have to. My questions are: Is there a special problem in naming events? Do you have any idea why Microsoft did not support it?   Hi there I have set up my coldfusion application to have dynamic urls on the page, such as www.musicExplained/index.cfm/artist/:VariableName However my variable names will sometimes contain slashes, such as www.musicExplained/index.cfm/artist/GZA/Genius This is causing a problem, because my application presumes that the slash in the variable name represents a different section of the website, the artists albums. So the URL will fail. I am wondering if there is anyway to prevent this from happening? Do I need to use a function that replaces slashes in the variable names with another character? Thanks

• How to initialise a STL vector/list with a class without invoking the copy constructor

  I have a C++ program that uses a std::list containing instances of a class. If I call e.g. myList.push_back(MyClass(variable)); it goes through the process of creating a temporary variable, and then immediately copies it to the vector, and afterwards deletes the temporary variable. This is not nearly as efficient as I want, and sucks when you need a deep copy. I would love to have the constructor of my class new something and not have to implement a copy constructor just to allocate my memory for the second time and waste runtime. I'd also rather not have to immediately find the class instance from the vector/list and then manually allocate the memory (or do something horrible like allocate the memory in the copy constructor itself). Is there any way around this (I'm not using Visual Studio BTW)?

  Hi, Could anybody help me make a proper regular expression from a bunch of text in Ruby. I tried a lot but I don't know how to handle variable length titles. The string will be of format <sometext>title:"<actual_title>"<sometext>. I want to extract actual_title from this string. I tried /title:"."/ but it doesnt find any matches as it expects a closing quotation after one variable from opening quotation. I couldn't figure how to make it check for variable length of string. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

• Issue with plotting daily data using ggplot

  I tried to plot daily data from 9 variables in ggplot, but the graph I get cannot handle the date variable properly. The x axis is unreadable and its impossible to read the plot. I'm guessing there's an issue with the handling of dates.   <XmlInfo /> I ran into problem using Perl's popular SOAP::Lite module, where it wouldn't accept XML entity names starting with "xml" (regardles letters' case). The author of the module replied to email saying that entity names starting with "xml" are not permitted in XML specification, but I couldn't find it in W3C's documents for 1.0 and 1.1 specs, I also couldn't find it in any of the articles or guidelines docs about XML entity naming. In fact some guideline documents used names starting with xml as an example, and lots of people are using it, as I see via Google Code Search. So are there any restrictions (besides which characters to use as defined in W3C's documents) in Entity naming in XML? Is there a restriction saying you can't name entities starting with "xml"?

  Is search and replace the only way to rename as asp control in the code behind file? I find this extremely annoying, but it is the only way I can find. Scenario: I'll find a variable that needs renaming (Usually to meet naming convention) I'll rename the variable in the aspx/ascx file. I'll have to go in the code behind files and search and replace. I get annoyed Are there any better ways - preferably that would not touch a similarly named variable in another scope in the project. I'm on VS2008 with resharper -- does VS2010 address this perhaps?

• Windows environment variables change when opening command line?

  Sometimes when I change my environment variables in Windows, and then use software the depends on those variables, they are not properly updated. And good example is to change a variable, then open up Windows Command Line and echo the variable and see that it hasn't been changed, even though you properly changed it in the Environment Variables window. Another example I'm dealing with right now: I've been using Python 2.4.x for a while for a project, which uses the env var PYTHONPATH who's value has been: C:\Python24;C:\Python24\lib Today I installed Python 2.5.x for the project. I changed my PYTHONPATH to be: C:\Python25;C:\Python25\lib When I use Python 2.5 to run a script and do this: import sys print sys.path It prints: 'C:\\PYTHON24', 'C:\\PYTHON24\\lib' (and some other Python 2.5 related default installation paths) So clearly, the old PYTHONPATH environment variable changes aren't really sticking.... Does anyone know why this happens and how to fix it?

• How to access parent window variables from object

  I've got an XHTML 1.1 Strict document that is loading another XHTML 1.1 document in an <object> element (as <iframe> isn't part of the XHTML 1.1 spec). I'm having trouble in IE8 (don't care about 6 or 7) with accessing a javascript variable, Lightbox, in the parent window, from the document loaded in the <object>. In Firefox and everywhere I've seen online, I can just use window.parent.Lightbox. In IE8 however, I get it being undefined. window.parent does give me an object but it doesn't have my Lightbox variable. I've also tried window.Lightbox, window.top.Lightbox, and window.top.document.Lightbox, but all return undefined. I should mention I'm using Javascript to set the data property of the <object> - but I don't see how that could affect anything relevant. What Javascript Fu do I need to do to be able to access my Lightbox variable?
