• Capture IP packets on Dialup connection - Windows 7

  Our product utilizes (the wonderful) Winpcap to capture ip packets from all devices with an IP address and analyze them in real time. Unfortunately, we discovered that it does NOT capture any packets on dialup (e.g. PPP) connections on Windows 7, and that there are no near-term plans for enabling this (1). So we need something else. Microsoft Network Monitor and Windows Packet Filter are two options that surfaced during a bit of googling, but before delving into research I wanted to ask the experienced: what are out options, given the following requirements: Capture all in/outbound IP packets on the machine. Complete background processing - no UI should be involved. Support Windows Vista / 7. Performance (user should not feel the difference). Thanks in advance.

• The database 'DB Name' is not accessible.

  I am getting following error each time I tried to select database. The database 'DB Name' is not accessible. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.ObjectExplorer) Note: My OS is Win Vista. When I tried to open SQL Mgmt Studio as Run as administrator than I can able to access database properly. Any idea why it is giving error. I am also getting following error when my asp.net application is trying to access database. Cannot open database "DBName" requested by the login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'PCName\abcd'. I am not very good with SQL Server, please let me know how to create user and grant them permission in case that is what causing the problem. Thanks.

• Windows service only gets called when Visual Studio is attached to process

  I've created a simple windows service in C# using Visual Studio 2010. It uses a TcpListener and socket to listen for messages on a given port. This worked absolutely perfectly when my laptop had Windows Vista on it. However, since upgrading to Windows 7 and re-installing my service it only responds if I'm attached to the process and debugging in Visual Studio 2010 - at which time it behaves as expected. I've tried running the service under my (administrator) credentials and setting the exe to run as administrator. I've also checked "Allow service to interact with desktop" when it was running under the Local System account. I'm testing using both a test console app and an Adobe Air application - both with the same results. Are there some specific permissions that I need to allow the service to be called?

• Secure Desktop Mode effect for java application

  Does anyone now how to achieve a "Secure-Desktop Mode" (effect) such as one gets from the Windows Vista/7 UAC consent-blocks? I assume it is some function which will remove pixels here-and-there (and possibly graying them) and then finally drawing that to screen... I would like to apply it to my application to keep the user from doing anything until the another user connects to the system (but that is besides the point) I would really appreciate the advise. • Does SetThreadPriority cause thread reschedulling?

  Consider following situation, assuming single CPU system: thread A is running with a priority THREAD_PRIORITY_NORMAL, signals event E thread B with a priority THREAD_PRIORITY_LOWEST is waiting for an event E (Note: at this point the thread is not scheduled because it is runnable, but A is higher priority and runnable as well) thread A calls SetThreadPriority(B, THREAD_PRIORITY_ABOVE_NORMAL) Is thread B re-scheduled immediately to run, or is thread A allowed to continue until current time-slice is over, and B is scheduled only once a new time-slice has begun? I would be interested to know the answer for WinXP, Vista and Win7, if possible. Note: the scenario above is simplified from my real world code, where multiple threads are running on multiple cores, but the main object of the question stays: does SetThreadPriority cause thread scheduling to happen?

  Hi guys, Recently I've being given a chance to develop a PMS (Practice Management System) software for a small physiotherapy clinic. I'm a computer science student and my course is predominately told on Linux. However, my client runs all their computers on vista or Windows 7. My ideas are to develop the client front end in Visual C# and access a central postgresql server. I'm a beginner in Windows Programming so I'm after advice on best practice on implement user rights and access levels in C# (WPF or Windows FORM). I've had a look into Credential class in Visual C# and access control list but please share your thoughts. • Can I override a group policy setting as a machine admin?

  Group policy prevents several configuration settings on my Windows 7 / Vista machines. Since my domain account is a member of the local Administrators group on these boxes, is there still a way to override them locally? For instance, GP prevents changing the power management option "Turn off the display" (even changing it from cmd fails: POWERCFG -X -monitor-timeout-ac 60 = "An unexpected error condition has occurred. Unable to perform operation. You may not have permission to perform this operation.") Even when logging on with a local account and not the domain account, it's not possible to change the setting anymore ..

• Command line does not execute my parameters

  I have created a batch file to run an application automatically but it seems my CMD does not run it. I typed this (using notepad as an example): CMD /C "C:\notepad2\notepad2.exe" If I run this from Windows Vista it worked. But running this from Windows Server 2008 (64-bit) it just doesn't work. I even try using that line from the Run menu but no go. What do I do? My aim is to run a scheduled task that runs the batch file every now and then.

A friend of mine compiled it on windows xp 32 (also VC++ 2010) and is able to run it without problems any clues/hints/opinions? thanks

• Find where a variable is defined in PHP (And/or SMARTY)?

  I'm currently working on a very large project, and am under a lot of pressure to finish it soon, and I'm having a serious problem. The programmer who wrote this last defined variables in a very odd way - the config variables aren't all in the same file, they're spread out across the entire project of over 500 files and 100k+ lines of code, and I'm having a hell of a time figuring out where a certain variable is, so I can fix an issue. Is there a way to track this variable down? I believe he's using SMARTY (Which I can not stand, due to issues like this), and the variable is a template variable. I'm fairly sure that the variable I'm looking for was initially defined as a PHP variable, then that variable is passed into SMARTY, so I'd like to track down the PHP one, however if that's impossible - how can I track down where he defined the variable for SMARTY? P.S. I'm in Vista, and don't have ssh access to the server, so 'grep' is out of the question.

• Rails 3 and Bootstrap 2.1.0 - can't fix my footer

  I have Rails application with bootstrap 2.1.0 (i use twitter-bootstrap-rails gem for that). But i can't get working footer. It is not visible unless i scroll down the page. I can't get how to fix that. • CSS selectors : should I make my CSS easier to read or optimise the speed

  As I was working on a small website, I decided to use the PageSpeed extension to check if their was some improvement I could do to make the site load faster. However I was quite surprise when it told me that my use of CSS selector was "inefficient". I was always told that you should keep the usage of the class attribute in the HTML to a minimum, but if I understand correctly what PageSpeed tell me, it's much more efficient for the browser to match directly against a class name. It make sense to me, but it also mean that I need to put more CSS classes in my HTML. It make my .css file harder to read. I usually tend to mark my CSS like this : #mainContent p.productDescription em.priceTag { ... } Which make it easy to read : I know this will affect the main content and that it affect something in a paragraph tag (so I wont start to put all sort of layout code in it) that describe a product and its something that need emphasis. However it seem I should rewrite it as .priceTag { ... } Which remove all context information about the style. And if I want to use differently formatted price tag (for example, one in a list on the sidebar and one in a paragraph), I need to use something like that .paragraphPriceTag { ... } .listPriceTag { ... } Which really annoy me since I seem to duplicate the semantic of the HTML in my classes. And that mean I can't put common style in an unqualified .priceTag { ... } and thus I need to replicate the style in both CSS rule, making it harder to make change. (Altough for that I could use multiple class selector, but IE6 dont support them) I believe making code harder to read for the sake of speed has never been really considered a very good practice . Except where it is critical, of course. This is why people use PHP/Ruby/C# etc. instead of C/assembly to code their site. It's easier to write and debug. So I was wondering if I should stick with few CSS classes and complex selector or if I should go the optimisation route and remove my fancy CSS selectors for the sake of speed? Does PageSpeed make over the top recommandation? On most modern computer, will it even make a difference?

• Using respond_to ... format.json and jQuery Form Plugin by malsup

  Hello all, I'm having a tad bit of trouble getting the jQuery Form Plugin to work properly with a file-upload field. When I use the plugin to submit the form without a file-upload field, the format.json portion of the respond_to do |format| block is called properly. However, by adding the file-upload field, it only executes the format.html portion which makes my javascript code think that an error has occurred. Has anyone run into this before or know a way to force the plugin to always use json? Alternatively, can I modify the url that the plugin uses to force Rails to render the json? • Problem inserting JavaScript into a CKEditor Instance running inside a jQuery-UI Dialog Box

  Hello Overflowers! Here's what's going on: I'm building an app (using PHP, jQuery, etc), part of which lets users edit various bits of a web page (Header, Footer, Main Content, Sidebar) using CKEditor. It's set up so that each editable bit has an "Edit Content" button in the upper right that, on click, launches an instance of CKEditor inside a jQuery-UI Dialog box. After the user is done editing, they can click an 'Update Changes' button that passes the edited content back off to the main page and closes the Dialog/CKeditor. It's all working magnificently, save for one thing. If someone inserts any JavaScript code, wrapped in 'script' tags, using either the Insert HTML Plugin for CKEditor or by going to 'Source' in CKEditor and placing the code in the source, everything seems okay until they click the 'Update Changes' button. The JavaScript appears to be inserting properly, but when 'Update Changes' is clicked, instead of the Dialog closing and passing the script back into the div where it belongs, what I get instead is an all-white screen with just the output of the JavaScript. For example, a simple 'Hello World' script results in a white screen with the string 'Hello World' in the upper left corner; for more intricate scripts, like an API call to, say Aweber, that generates a newsletter signup form, I get an all-white screen with the resulting form from the Aweber API call perfectly rendered in the middle of the screen. One of the most confusing parts is that, on these pages, if I click 'View Source', I get absolutely nothing. Blank emptiness. • dojo layout tutorial dor version 1.7 doesn't work for 1.7.2

  This is sortof a continuation to dojo1.7 layout acting screwy. So I made some working widgets and tested them out, i then tried altering my work using the tutorial at http://dojotoolkit.org/documentation/tutorials/1.7/dijit_layout/ to make the layout nice. After failing at that in many interesting ways (thus my last question) I started on a new path. My plan is now to implement the layout tutorial example and then stick in my widgets. For some reason even following the tutorial wont work... everything loads then disappears and I'm left with a blank browser window. Any ideas? It just struck me that it could be browser compatibility issues, I'm working on Firefox 13.0.1. • Hide jQuery Accordion while loading

  I am testing a site build with a slow connection and I noticed the jQuery Accordion stays expanded for a long time, until the rest of the site is loaded, and then finally collapses. Not very pretty. I was wondering how I could keep it collapsed through the loading process and only expand when clicked. I am working with the standalone 1.6 version of the accordion plugin. • removing contents of div using Jquery "empty" doesn't work

  I'm trying to remove contents of particular div which are basically list items and a heading by using jquery empty so that I could replace with new contents. What happens when I run the code is, the whole div element blinked and flash the replaced content and then the old one reappear. Can anyone tell me what am I doing wrong? • Realtime MySQL search results on an advanced search page

  I'm a hobbyist, and started learning PHP last September solely to build a hobby website that I had always wished and dreamed another more competent person might make. I enjoy programming, but I have little free time and enjoy a wide range of other interests and activities. I feel learning PHP alone can probably allow me to create 98% of the desired features for my site, but that last 2% is awfully appealing: The most powerful tool of the site is an advanced search page that picks through a 1000+ record game scenario database. Users can data-mine to tremendous depths - this advanced page has upwards of 50 different potential variables. It's designed to allow the hardcore user to search on almost any possible combination of data in our database and it works well. Those who aren't interested in wading through the sea of options may use the Basic Search, which is comprised of the most popular parts of the Advanced search. Because the advanced search is so comprehensive, and because the database is rather small (less than 1,200 potential hits maximum), with each variable you choose to include the likelihood of getting any qualifying results at all drops dramatically. In my fantasy land where I can wield AJAX as if it were Excalibur, my users would have a realtime Total Results counter in the corner of their screen as they used this page, which would automatically update its query structure and report how many results will be displayed with the addition of each variable. In this way it would be effortless to know just how many variables are enough, and when you've gone and added one that zeroes out the results set. A somewhat similar implementation, at least visually, would be the Subtotal sidebar when building a new custom computer on IBuyPower.com For those of you actually still reading this, my question is really rather simple: Given the time & ability constraints outlined above, would I be able to learn just enough AJAX (or whatever) needed to pull this one feature off without too much trouble? would I be able to more or less drop-in a pre-written code snippet and tweak to fit? or should I consider opening my code up to a trusted & capable individual in the future for this implementation?   I searched around prior to posting this and made sure I hadn't missed anything obvious, though I have a feeling I am missing something basic. I'm using this as a sidebar navigation view. I tried making them static cells and pre-populating them, but they were blank that way as well. When I do it this way I can see everything gets called except that. • Can't remove GPT data from MBR

  I am having difficulty getting the Ubuntu installer (and gparted) to recognize the partitions on my MBR type disk. Other operating systems and disk tools read the disk structure and the files on it fine. I have used fixparts to write a new MBR but the issue persists. I assume the issue stems from the Protective MBR data still present on the disk but I am at a loss as to how to remove it while preserving my NTFS data partition. Install Macrotube The first thing we need to do is download and install the plugin called Macrotube (link below) following the defaults through the install wizard. After it’s installed, open Windows 7 Media Center and you’ll find Macrotube in the main menu. Currently there are three services available…YouTube, Dailymotion, and MSN Soapbox. Just select the service where you want to check out some videos. You can browse through different subjects or categories… Or you can search the the service by typing in what you’re looking for…with your remote or keyboard. There is the ability to drill down you search content by date, rating, views, and relevance. There are a few settings available such as the language beta, auto updates, and appearance. Conclusion This neat project is still in development and the developer is continuing to add changes through updates. It only works with Windows 7 Media Player, but there is a 32 & 64-bit version. Sometimes we experiences certain videos that wouldn’t play and it did crash a few times, but that is to be expected with a work in progress. But overall, this is a cool plugin that will allow you to watch your favorite online content from WMC.
