• Matching up HomeGroup users created in different versions of Windows

  In our household, we have 2 laptops and a desktop, all currently on Windows 8.1. The desktop has been upgraded in stages from Windows 7. Laptop 1 was bought with Windows 8 and has now been upgraded. Laptop 2 is new and came with Windows 8.1. We've been trying to set up a HomeGroup such that we have one user on laptop 1, one on laptop 2 and both can log into the desktop, with each user able to edit their files on their laptop and desktop, while the other user has read-only access. And we now have that situation ... except ... because the user on laptop 1 was created in Windows 8 but the same user on the desktop was created in 8.1, they have different names in Windows Explorer (say, firstuser and first_000). Likewise, the other use was created on laptop 2 in Windows 8.1 and on the desktop in Windows 7 (so let's say secon_000 and seconduser). This is ultimately confusing. Now if we expand the HomeGroup, we get four users (firstuser, first_000, seconduser and secon_000) and each has a single computer inside it. What I'd like to see is firstuser = laptop1, desktop and seconduser = laptop2, desktop. An acceptable alternative is first_000 = laptop1, desktop and secon_000 = laptop2, desktop. But what I don't want to have to do is delete firstuser and seconduser and rebuild them. Is there a better way?

  Recently i bought a lenovo u410 ultrabook. It has given along with windows 7 and 4 primary partitions. So to install ubuntu 12.04 i removed one of the primary partition and made it as extended partition. In that extended partition, i allocated memory for the swap and root (/) directory and then installed the ubuntu. After that by using EasyBCD tool, added ubuntu to the boot menu in grub2. So when i try to boot into ubuntu it is showing grub prompt only. From there how can i boot into ubuntu. Thanks in advance

  I know that this issue may have been happened to many people and answered many times. For some reason, I had to install Windows XP beside Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. Once I did that, I'm no longer able to log on to my Ubuntu. The booting list screen doesn't show up. I tried some ways to fix that, one was to try Boot Repair (of course after opening Ubuntu live from a USB), however, the program didn't open after the installation had finished !! So how can I fix that? I hope you guys stick a little with my problem until it is solved

I can't send e-mail via PHP's mail() function, it always returns the following error: SMTP server response: 550 Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable or not local Which setting should I alter in order to enable sending mail? 2.) The exec() and passthru() PHP functions don't work; their outputs are blank even when I try to run simple commands such as dir. A guy from Microsoft said that I need to find someone under whom I'd publish those apps. Where would I find somebody who'd be willing to register there and basically act as my publisher? • Can't install ubuntu along windows 7

  I boot from a DVD the last version of ubuntu 12.04 x64(because i have 8g. of ram) ,hit install Ubuntu ,check Install Along windwos 7(or something like this ,anyway the first option) and the button in the bottom right corner says "Restart to install" or just restart...i cant remember. So ,i hit the button than ,the screen goes black ,some proceses are stopped and on the middle of the screen it writes like this " Please remove installation media and close the tray (if any) then press ENTER: " The DVD rom opens and i remove the dvd ,close the tray ,pushing enter and the windows is starting ,no instalation ,no file copied to my PC ,nothing.

If it helps, I can tell you that I used to have Vista and Windows 7 on my 2 laptops but I clean installed Ubuntu 12.04 on one, and Lubuntu on the other. Also I have no trace of Windows left on any of my laptops, when I bought my laptops they came without a Windows CD, so I only had a 20GB partition on my hard drives (which I formatted when I clean installed Ubuntu and Lubuntu.) Also, I have no problem with clean installing Windows XP and the reinstalling Ubuntu/Lubuntu so I can dual boot. Thanks! Edit: I have a ISO file ready, on a USB.

  I've recently installed Ubuntu12.04 on my HP Pavillion desktop which came preloaded with Windows 7 (64bit). Since today when I try to boot WIn7 I get a screen firstly saying loading files then it goes to the next screen which tries but fails to fix errors. I've also tried system restore which has also failed. When I run boot repair it says it has been successful and to try and reboot. When I reboot I still get the same error. I don't know what to do... :/ P.S.: I've created a partition with the Ubuntu installer. My hard disk drive is 250 gb (there around) and the partition is 30gb big... • Windows 8 doesn't start up after installation

  I have a DELL INSPIRON n5110 machine running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. It has 6GB of RAM and 500 GB hard disk capable to run any Windows and Linux system. And I recently attempted to install Windows 8 in the machine. Installation goes fine and smooth until the final stage when windows is done installing and GETS DEVICES READY. When GETTNG DEVICES READY reaches about 60%, the screen goes blank with the machine running. After a while it reboots. And after the new Windows Logo with dotted circles are done showing up, the screen goes blank again (when we'd expect login screen to show up). There is not even a cursor. I can see the HARD DISK ACTIVITY LED blinking but nothing shows up in the screen. I've tried CLEAN INSTALL several times. The DVD is fine, it installed and worked well in my friends' laptop PCs. I tried installing both PRO version and ENTERPRISE version and both 32-bit and 64-bit. But the problem was same everytime. Finally, I had to reinstall Windows 7 which installed and ran without any problem. The problem, we can guess, is GRAPHICS perhaps. I have Intel SandyBridge Graphics Mobile Chipset (Intel HD Graphics 3000). But if Windows 7 and Linux distrubutions like Mint and BackTrack can run on the machine, why on earth, would Windows 8 not run?

• Winforms TabControl causing spurious Paint events for UserControl

  For our project, we've written a WinForms UserControl for graphing. We're seeing some strange behavior when our control is sited in a TabControl - our control continuously fires Paint events, even when there is absolutely no activity by the user. We only see this in the TabControl. When we site our control in other containers such as Forms or Splitters, Paint is only fired when you'd expect e.g. when the control is first displayed, etc. Can anyone suggest why this might be happening? • Is there a way to know what the Windows Disk Cleanup utility will delete?

  When I run the Disk Cleanup utility that's built into Windows 8, it tells me that it can free up 53GB by deleting 'Temporary Files'. However, a CCleaner analysis on default settings only finds about 300MB worth of space to free up, so I'm wondering what Disk Cleanup has found that CCleaner does not. Note that this question appears to be similar to what I'm asking, but the accepted answer says that 'Temporary Files' refers to %TEMP%. I've already cleared out most of C:\Users\Cam\AppData\Local\Temp, and it now has only 230MB of stuff in it, even with system files showing. So where is this 53GB located? Is there a way to find out what it is? Edit: I should note that this is on a 110GB SSD, so it's almost half the drive. And in fact I'm only using 86GB, so if it's really going to clear out 53GB, that would be more than 60% of the stuff on my C drive. I'm starting to think that Disk Cleanup caches its analysis, and hasn't updated since I started cleaning up the drive earlier today. Although when I run it it says that it's 'Calculating' how much space can be saved, and it takes about 5-10 seconds to do so. Hmmm... Edit2: Here is what my hard drive looks like, according to SpaceMonger (Right click-Open image in new tab, so you can see it properly): You can see why I was starting to think that the 53GB figure is actually wrong. Even if 'Temporary Files' includes my hiberfil and everything in WinSxS (about 13GB total), that would be 26GB, which is only halfway there. Hard to see where there's 53GB of stuff to delete.

• What folders to encrypt with EFS on Windows 7 laptop?

  Since I've been using my laptop more as a laptop recently (carrying it around) I am now evaluating my strategy to protect confidential information in case it is stolen. Keep in mind that my laptop is 6 years old (Lenovo T61 with 8 GB or RAM, 2GHz dual core CPU). It runs Windows 7 fine but it is no speedy demon. It doesn't support AES instruction set. I've been using TrueCrypt volume mounted on demand for really important stuff like financial statements forever. Nothing else is encrypted. I just finished my evaluation of EFS, Bitlocker and took a closer look at TrueCrypt again. I've come to conclusion that boot partition encryption via Bitlocker or TrueCrypt is not worth the hassle. I may decide in the future to use Bitlocker or TrueCrypt to encrypt one of the data volumes but at this point I intend to use EFS to encrypt parts of my hard drive that contain data that I wouldn't want exposed. The purpose of this post is to get your feedback about what folders should be encrypted from the general point of view (of course everyone will have something specific in addition) Here is what I thought of so far (will update if I think of something else): 1) AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook - Outlook files 2) AppData\Local\Thunderbird\Profiles and AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles- Thunderbird profiles, not sure yet where exactly data is stored. 3) AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\djdsakdjh.default\bookmarkbackups - Firefox bookmark backup. Is there a separate location for "main" Firefox bookmark file? I haven't figured it out yet. 4) Bookmarks for Chrome (don't know where it's bookmarks are) and Internet Explorer ($Username\Favorites) - I don't really use them but why not to secure that as well. 5) Downloads\, My Documents\ and My Pictures\ folders I don't think I need to encrypt, say, latest service pack for Visual Studio. So I will probably create subfolder called "Secure" in all of these folders and set it to "Encrypted". Anything sensitive I will save in this folder. Any other suggestions? Again, this is from the point of view of your "regular office user".

  According to the wikipedia page, Microsoft Live Sync will shortly stop offering the PC-to-PC sync service. There are lots of apps to sync two PCs on the same LAN, but I want to sync two PCs that are in different cities, across the internet, traversing two different NATs, and that requires some kind of service running in the internet that both connect into. There is already a few questions about syncing folders and files, but this is not a duplicate because none of them answer this basic question: Microsoft Live Sync works better than RSYNC, or any of the linked SYNC solutions in any of the "not really duplicates" because it works even when the two PCs have NAT and firewalls between them that forbid direct connectivity, because Windows Live Sync has a free always-on internet server that all the client PCs connect into. I'm looking for a FREE (no-fees) Microsoft Live Sync work-alike PC-to-PC sync solution that works between PCs and Macs, at least, as well as between PCs, and works behind NAT and firewalls at least as well as Microsoft's solution. (Note that Microsoft's solution makes only outbound socket calls to a microsoft server, so this solution must necessarily include a server-hub component that is hosted publically on a free site and which does not require that I set up and manage and pay for my own public internet hosting site) Hint: None of the answers in the linked duplicate are equivalent (PureSync,FreeFileSync,BestSync 2010,SyncButler,Comodo BackUp,QuickShadow,Gbridge) in that none of them work for the PC to Mac situation, where firewalls and nats prevent direct connection, or else they require money to be paid. When Microsoft Live Sync / Live Mesh finally kills direct PC-to-PC mode, the limitation will be that you will have to pay for more than 25 GB of cloud service, and you can then only sync PC #1 to PC #2 if you first sync to the cloud, then down to other clients. I can currently sync 100 gb of data from one computer to another, only temporarily "moving the data" through Microsoft's data servers without using up my Skydrive storage quota.

  I was having problems with my USB devices for an hour last night, and I am unable to determine the root cause of the problem. The two symptoms are: At seemingly random times (not consistently spaced by time or caused by any detectable event) my USB devices become "detached". Windows will play the USB disconnect sound and then the reconnect sound. The devices disconnected and then reconnected. My USB Keyboard will "stick" on one key for several seconds before processing any other keystroke made. The mouse also does not respond to clicks. I do not lose mouse movement or USB device connectivity. And after a moment of this several beeps will be emitted from the speakers. Hardware Specs: GFX Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 470 Superclocked 1280MB DDR5 PCIe Motherboard: ASUS P6X58D Premium Intel X58 Socket LGA1366 MB Processor: Intel Core i7-920 2.66Ghz 8M LGA1366 CPU Memory: Corsair Dominator 6144MB PC12800 DDR3 Storage: Hitachi 1TB Serial ATA HD 1600MHz 7200/32MB/SATA-3G Cooling: Corsair Hydro H50 CPU Liquid Cooler Case: Corsair Obsidian 800D Full Tower Case Power Supply: Corsair HX1000W 1000W Modular Power Supply Steps I have taken to narrow down the problem: Restarted the computer. - No change Changed USB port the Hub was connected to on the CPU. - No change Removed all devices from USB Hub and connected directly to CPU. - No change Used a different USB keyboard both in USB Hub and directly to CPU. - No change Disconnected and reconnected all cables. - No change Disassembled the Tower and determined if the USB headers were firmly connected. - No change Checked device manager for errors. Checked all USB devices. - Nothing flagged After an hour of frustration trying to narrow down the problem it appeared to disappear. But I am torn between it being a Mobo problem or an OS problem. Is there anything else I can do to narrow down the problem before a reformat and then eventually exchanging the Mobo?

• Windows 7 inbuilt and 3rd party (de)fragmentation related queries

  I have a pretty good idea of how files end up getting fragmented. That said, I just copied ~3,200 files of varying sizes (from a few KB to ~20GB) from an external USB HDD to an internal, freshly formatted (under Windows 7 x64), NTFS, 2TB, 5400RPM, WD, SATA, non-system (i.e. secondary) drive, filling it up 57%. Since it should have been very much possible for each file to have been stored in one contiguous block, I expected the drive to be fragmented not more than 1-2% at most after this rather lengthy exercise (unfortunately this older machine doesn't support USB 3.0). Windows 7's inbuilt defrag utility told me after a quick analysis that the drive was fragmented only 1% or so, which dovetailed neatly with my expectations. However, just out of curiosity I downloaded and ran the latest portable x64 version of Piriform's Defraggler, and was shocked to see the drive being reported as being ~85% fragmented! The portable version of Auslogics Disk Defrag also agreed with Defraggler, and both clearly expected to grind away for ~10 hours to completely defragment the drive. 1) How in blazes could the inbuilt and 3rd party defrag utils disagree so badly? I mean, 10-20% variance is probably understandable, but 1% and 85% are miles apart! Not so in Windows Vista if the fragments are large enough – the defragmentation algorithm was changed (from Windows XP) to ignore pieces of a file that are larger than 64MB. As a result, defrag in XP and defrag in Vista will report different amounts of fragmentation on a volume. ... [Please read the entire post so the quote is not taken out of context.] Could it simply be that the 3rd party defrag utils ignore this post-XP change and continue to use analysis algos similar to those XP used? 2) Assuming that the 3rd party utils aren't lying about the real extent of fragmentation (which Windows is downplaying post-XP), how could the files have even got fragmented so badly given they were just copied over afresh to an empty drive? 3) If vastly differing analysis algos explain the yawning gap, which do I believe? I'm no defrag fanatic for sure, but 85% is enough to make me seriously consider spending 10 hours defragging this drive. On the other hand, 1% reported by Windows' own defragger clearly implies that there is no cause for concern and defragging would actually have negative consequences (as per the post). Is Windows' assumption valid and should I just let it be, or will there be any noticeable performance gains after running one of the 3rd party utils for 10 hours straight? 4) I see that out of the box Windows 7 defrag is scheduled to run weekly. Does anyone know whether it defrags every single time, or only if its analysis reveals a fragmentation percentage over a set threshold? If the latter, what is this threshold and can it be changed, maybe via a Registry edit? Thanks for reading through (my first query on this wonderful site!) and for any helpful replies. Also, if you're answering question #3, please keep in mind that any speed increases post defragging with 3rd party utils vis-à-vis Windows' inbuilt program should not include pre-Vista (preferably pre-Win7) examples. Further, examples of programs that made your system boot faster won't help in this case, since this is a non-system drive (although one that'll still be used daily).

• Virus cleanup; Windows Automatic Updates service crashes in esent.dll

  Background I'm doing system recovery on an old WinXP SP1 system brought to me on suspicion of virus infection. After taking preliminary backups, I used MalwareBytes to detect and clean the infection. I might've even gotten it all. In the process, I've discovered (a) the system drive is showing signs of impending failure, and (b) the owner has been using the system's old crusty IE-6 instead of the up-to-date Firefox I've provided for him. So naturally, thinking I had a relatively stable system, I tried to hit the Windows Update site to install IE-8, in case further training doesn't stick. The update site told me it needed to update the installer, and I started that process. Soon after, wuauclt.exe started crashing, reporting addresses in module esent.dll. There's a Microsoft KB (910437) on a problem with that DLL, so I downloaded the hotfix and installed. The crashing did not stop. I attempted to install SP3 from the offline installer, but that didn't fix the issue either. The system is reporting a few hard drive / IDE controller errors, but they don't correlate to the crashes, so they aren't the direct cause. I've also attempted to rollback to the time between the infection removal and the first crashes, but that doesn't help. Question The hotfix I tried to install dealt with problem in transaction logs of the Extensible Storage Engine (ESE) database. I suspect this issue is similar, but that the database itself (whatever the ESE database is) is corrupted. Is there a way to clean or clear this database so that system operation returns to normal? Can someone enlighten me as to what the ESE database actually is, and where it resides? Can I just locate some files and delete them to bring this under control?

• What are the requirements for Windows Remote Assistance over Teredo?

  I try to get the Windows 7 (or Vista) remote assistance feature to work, without using UPnP on the novices computer. After enabling Teredo on the expert's computer (that is in a corporate network, and therefore has teredo disabled by default), I tried to connect to the novice both using Easy Connect and the invitation file with no success. My triubleshooting included the following (so far). A connection to the novice from my home pc was successful, hinting at a misconfiguration on the experts side. Both computers have a "qualified" connection to the Teredo Server. Both computers have a valid Teredo IP, access to the Global_ PNRP cloud and can resolve names registered with PNRP on the other computer. The expert can resolve the PNRP Id automatically generated with an Easy Connect help request Both computers can ping the other's PNRP name. Both computers can ping the other's Teredo IP Address using ping -6 Now, I am a little stumped. I expected Remote Assistance to work at this point, since my corporate firewall has no Teredo filtering. What could RA cause not to work in this setting? Thanks in advance!

• Why is windows not able to create a system partition?

  I'm reinstalling Windows 7 64 bit, and I encountered an issue I've never seen before. I have a legit copy of Win 64 Professional, and I've installed it probably a half dozen times on this machine in the past without a problem. Googling the error only brings me to issues with people who are upgrading to win7. The drive itself seems to not have a problem. I can mount it on other systems and I can create an NTFS partition on it on other machines. I can install Ubuntu on it without any issues. Additionally, if I try using my alternate backup hard drive, the installer gives the same error. I have run diskpart from the setup page and clean seems to report that all is well. However, I cannot get past the screen below, which says Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. This happens regardless of whether or not the disk space is already allocated. What is causing this? How do I solve or get past this?
