• Eclipse Java Profiler

  I know this has been asked before, but I have not found anything recent that really gives a good answer. I'm trying to find a free profiler for eclipse that works well. I would like a graphical breakdown of execution time in particular. I've tried TPTP but have had no luck at all with GUI apps (it took almost a minute for a GUI app to start and was virtually unusable on screen - it uses a lot of Java OpenGL, so I'm not sure if it has to do with that). I liked YourKit, but unfortunately it's not free. I even tried switching to NetBeans since they have a built in profiler. If anyone has had success with particular profilers (even if it was TPTP), I'd like to hear about it. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. thanks, Jeff

• What can be done to speed up synchronous WCF calls?

  My performance measurements of synchronous WCF calls from within a Silverlight application showed I can make 7 calls/s on a localhost connection, which is very slow. Can this be speeded up, or is this normal? I'm working on a Project with outdated, very old looking GUI (the used GUI framework is more than 10 years old) Since the used programming language is Eiffel, there are almost no good libraries for GUI development. Although Wrappers for C libraries exist, it's not that easy to wrap something like Qt with them. The current GUI framework uses the Windows API to create windows, widgets and so on. But as stated - it's very old. Now i would like to learn more about how to use the Windows API directly to create state of the art GUI's Can someone recommend any reading material? Thanks!

  I am designing an Org Chart, model is almost ready and simplified a bit for clarity here. OrgUnit (OrgUnitId, Name, ReportsToOrgUnitId, ...) OrgUnitJobs (OrgUnitJobId, OrgUnitId, JobName, ReportsToOrgUnitJobId, ... ,IsJobGroup) Employee (EmployeeId, ........) OrgUnitJobEmployee (OrgUnitJobId, EmployeeId, AssignedDate, .....,) so I want to know every OrgUnit's ManagerEmployee (should have one), and Employees can have more than one job, but one of them has to be the main job, so I know whats his manager and other stuff. This is going to support a little workflow behind the scnese, so that is why it is not a very simple Org chart Model. so what would you do, would you add properties like (IsManager property to OrgUnitJobs model) or add ManagerOrgUnitJobId to OrgUnitModel. and why? Likewise, for employees would you add IsPrimaryJob property to OrgUnitJobEmployee model, or add PrimaryJobId to Employee Model.

  I am getting this R6034 error when running program that I just updated (and cleaned) from VS2003 - VS2008. To be more exact: "R6034: An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library incorrectly." It seems to happed almost at the same place all the time when running. I have no really idea why but I tried some suggestions I found when googleing this. For example adding the msvc dlls, but that didn't work. Any help on why this error occurs would be great. Thanks

• Background image of table cell

  Hey guys, Trying to set a background image for a table view cell, tried almost everything but failing. Hoping someone would notice what I am doing wrong. • LRU caches in C

  I need to cache a large (but variable) number of smallish (1 kilobyte to 10 megabytes) files in memory, for a C application (in a *nix environment). Since I don't want to eat all my memory, I'd like to set hard memory limit (say, 64 megabytes) and push files into a hash table with the file name as the key and dispose of the entries with the least use. What I believe I need is an LRU cache. Really, I'd rather not roll my own so if someone knows where I can find a workable library, please point the way? Failing that, can someone provide a simple example of an LRU cache in C? Related posts indicated that a hash table with a doubly-linked list, but I'm not even clear on how a doubly-linked list keeps LRU. Side note: I realize this is almost exactly the function of memcache, but it's not an option for me. I also took a look at the source hoping to enlighten myself on LRU caching, with no success.

  Givens: One SQL Server is named: DevServerA Another is named: DevServerB\2K5 Problem: From DevServerA, how can I write a query that references DevServerB\2K5? I tried a sample, dummy query (running it from DevServerA): SELECT TOP 1 * FROM DevServerB\2K5.master.sys.tables And I get the error: Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Line 2 Incorrect syntax near '\.'. However, I know my syntax is almost correct, since the other way around works (running this query from DevServerB\2K5): SELECT TOP 1 * FROM DevServerA.master.sys.tables Please help me figure out how to reference DevServerB\2K5 from DevServerA. • What are some good algorithms for drawing lines between graph nodes?

  What I'm specifically grappling with is not just the layout of a graph, but when a user selects a graph node and starts to drag it around the screen area, the line has to constantly be redrawn to reflect what it would look like if the user were to release the node. I suppose this is part of the layout algorithm? Also some applications get a bit fancy and don't simply draw the line in a nice curvy way, but also bend the line around the square shaped node in almost right angles. See attached image and keep in mind that as a node is dragged, the line is drawn as marching ants, and re-arranged nicely, while retaining its curved style.

• How do you protect code from leaking outside?

  Besides open-sourcing your project and legislation, are there ways to prevent, or at least minimize the damages of code leaking outside your company/group? We obviously can't block Internet access (to prevent emailing the code) because programmer's need their references. We also can't block peripheral devices (USB, Firewire, etc.) The code matters most when it has some proprietary algorithms and in-house developed knowledge (as opposed to regular routine code to draw GUIs, connect to databases, etc.), but some applications (like accounting software and CRMs) are just that: complex collections of routine code that are simple to develop in principle, but will take years to write from scratch. This is where leaked code will come in handy to competitors. As far as I see it, preventing leakage relies almost entirely on human process. What do you think? What precautions and measures are you taking? And has code leakage affected you before?

• Recover backup copy of a ubuntu linux installation on a usb stick using dd

  Hi, I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a usb stick in persistent install mode. So I could boot the laptop or my desktop computer with the stick, at boot time. Once I needed the 8GB stick for another purposes so I thought about coyping it to my desktop doing from mac os x: dd if=/dev/disks3s of=/Users/jack/Desktop/usb_copy Now I am trying to do the opposite, after having used the stick, which was formatted to NTFS, just doing dd if=/Users/jack/Desktop/usb_copy of=/dev/disks3s but although I can see that almost of the files are there, I can not boot again. IT is also strange the the file permissions are kind of strange, something like _user What can I do ? Thanks

• Determine Click-thru Percentage With PHP

  Hi all, I am currently working on a small sponsorship application(PHP/MySql) for my personal blog, and am almost finish, but I am stuck on how to calculate the click-thru rate of my sponsors campaigns. I was always terrible with working out percentages, so any practical help would be appreciated. The data is stored in the DB as simple numbers.. So as expected, when a page refreshes, or a sponsors ad is clicked, the data updates with an incrementation of 1. So using these values...say $clicks and $impressions, how would I determine the click-thru rate? What would be the sum I would use to calculate? An example function would really be appreciated. • Nav drop down with rounded corner troubles...

  Hi I have worked on the following nav drop down seen here http://charmcitykids.missionmedia.net/. It works and is almost complete, but I have one issue. When you mouseover a nav title the text goes from color to black and then shows the dropdown. That is how it should work, but when you move your mouse to go a nav title within the dropdown the black text(active image) goes back to color and doesnt remain black. Any suggestion when dropdown is active and user is navigating through such to keep the text(active image) black? thnx jonah

• Does the COM server have to call SysFreeString() for an [out] parameter?

  We have the following interface: [object, uuid("uuidhere"), dual ] interface IInterface : IDispatch { [id(1), propget] HRESULT CoolProperty( [out, retval] BSTR* result ); } Now there's a minor problem. On one hand the parameter is "out" and so any value can be passed as input, the parameter will become valid only upon the successful return. On the other hand, there's this MSDN article which is linked to from many pages that basically says (the last paragraph) that if any function is passed a BSTR* it must free the string before assigning a new string. That's horrifying. If that article is right it means that all the callers must surely pass valid BSTRs (maybe null BSTRs), otherwise BSTR passed can be leaked. If the caller passed a random value and the callee tries to call SysFreeString() it runs into undefined behavior, so the convention is critical. Then what's the point in the [out] attribute? What will be the difference between the [in, out] and [out] in this situation? Is that article right? Do I need to free the passed BSTR [out] parameter before assigning a new one?

• How to deal with presence or not of xml namespaces using xslt.

  I have some XML/TEI documents, and i'm writing an XSLT 2.0 to extract their content. Almost all TEI documents has no namespace, but one has the default namespace (xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0"). So all documents has the same aspect, with unqulified tags like <TEI> or <teiHeader>, but if I try to extract the content, all works with "non-namespaced-documents", but nothing (of course) is extracted from the namespaced-document. So i used the attribute xpath-default-namespace="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" and now (of course) the only document working is the namespaced one. I can't edit documents at all, so what I'm asking is if there's a way to change dynamically the xpath-default-namespace in order to make work xpaths like //teiHeader both with namespaced and non-namespaced documents

• HTTP: can GET and POST requests from a same machine come from different IPs?

  I'm pretty sure I remember reading --but cannot find back the links anymore-- about this: on some ISP (including at least one big ISP in the U.S.) it is possible to have a user's GET and POST request appearing to come from different IPs. (note that this is totally programming related, and I'll give an example below) I'm not talking about having your IP adress dynamically change between two requests. I'm talking about this: IP 1: 123.45.67.89 IP 2: 101.22.33.44 The same user makes a GET, then a POST, then a GET again, then a POST again and the servers see this: - GET from IP 1 - POST from IP 2 - GET from IP 1 - POST from IP 2 So altough it's the same user, the webserver sees different IPs for the GET and the POSTs. Surely seen that HTTP is a stateless protocol this is perfectly legit right? I'd like to find back the explanation as to how/why certain ISP have their networks configured such that this may happen. I'm asking because someone asked me to implement the following IP filter and I'm pretty sure it is fundamentally broken code (breaking havoc for at least one major american ISP users). Here's a Java servlet filter that is supposed to protect against some attacks. The reasoning is that: "For any session filter checks that IP address in the request is the same that was used when session was created. So in this case session ID could not be stolen for forming fake sessions." http://www.servletsuite.com/servlets/protectsessionsflt.htm However I'm pretty sure this is inherently broken because there are ISPs where you may see GET and POST coming from different IPs. Any info on this subject is very welcome.

• Excluding files from web logs

  Looking through my web logs, I see a lot of entries that don't interest me. Some of them are commonly used images, css files, and scripts, which I can easily exclude by un-checking the 'log visits' check box in IIS for the folder properties. I would also like to exclude log entries for certain common requests which are not in their own folders. Mostly, 'favicon.ico'. 'scriptresource.axd', and 'webresource.axd'. These (especially scriptresource.axd) make up almost a third of a typical log file on my site. So, the question is, how do I tell IIS not to log these requests? And is there any reason that this is a bad idea?

• COM-Objects containing maps / content error(0)

  I'm writing a small wrapper to get familiar with some important topics in C++ (WinAPI, COM, STL,OOP). For now, my class shall be able to create a (child) window. Mainly, this window is connected to a global message loop that distribute messages to a local loop of the right instance (global is static, local is virtual). Obviously, there are surely better ways to do that but I'm using std::maps to store HWND and their instance pointer in pairs (the Global loop looks for the pointer with the HWND-parameter, gets itself the pointer from the map and calls then the local loop). Now, it appears that the map does not accept any values because of a unknown reason. It seems to allocate enough space but something went wrong anyway [ (error) 0 is displayed instead of the entries in visual C++). I've looked that up in google as well and found out that maps cause some trouble when used in classes AND DLLs. May this be the reason and is there any solution?? While No.1 framework is Intraweb, there is a lot of interest around ExtJS, that has 2 incarnations: 1) the opensource ExtPascal 2) the closedsource Raudus Now the products are different, Raudus never supports the latest ExtJS version (while ExtPascal does because as far as I read it "almost automatically updates itself to the latest ExJS version"), Raudus "seems" much RAD (much similar to Intraweb from the RAD point of view). Anyway why chose one or the other? Why Raudus since it is free cannot become Open Source?

  I'm trying to write a DSL that allows me to do Policy.name do author "Foo" reviewed_by "Bar" end The following code can almost process it: class Policy include Singleton def self.method_missing(name,&block) puts name puts "#{yield}" end def self.author(name) puts name end def self.reviewed_by(name) puts name end end Defining my method as class methods (self.method_name) i can access it using the following syntax: Policy.name do Policy.author "Foo" Policy.reviewed_by "Bar" end If i remove the "self" from the method names, and try to use my desired syntax, then i receive an error "Method not Found" in the Main so it could not find my function until the module Kernel. Its ok, i understand the error. But how can i fix it? How can i fix my class to make it work with my desired syntax that?

  I've been trying to clear my memcache as I'm noticing the storage taking up almost 30% of server memory when using ps -aux. • Show a taskbar item with a NativeWindow

  My application is intended to work almost entirely through a Windows 7 taskbar item with the use of thumbnails and jump lists. I know I can easily create a Form and simply hide it, but this seems like overkill. Plus, I'd like to toy around with NativeWindow as much as possible, because I've never used it before. Essentially, I have a class called RootWindow that derives from NativeWindow. I don't need a visible window at all, but simply something to process window messages and provide a taskbar item that I can attach thumbnails and jump lists to. Is there some kind of special CreateParams option I need to pass to CreateHandle? Or am I out of luck?
