• Please help me, I need some solid career advice, put myself in a dumb situation

  Hi, First off, I just want to say thank you in advance for looking at my question and would really value your input on this subject. My core question is how do I proceed from the following predicament. I will be honest with you, I wasted my College Experience. I slacked off and didn't take any of my comp sci classes that seriously, somehow i still got out with a 3.25 GPA. But truth be told I learned nothing. I befriended most of my professors who went pretty lenient on me in terms of grading. However, I basically came out of College knowing how to program a simple calculator in VB.Net. I was (to my great surprise) hired by a very large respected company in Denver as a Junior developer. Well the long and the short of it is that I knew so little about programming that I quickly became the office pariah and was almost fired due to my incompetence. It has been 8 months now and I feel I have learned some basic things and I am not as picked on as I used to be by the other developers. However, everyone hates me and the first few months have given the other developers a horrible perception of me. I am no longer afraid of code or learning, but I have put my self in the precarious position of being the scapegoat of our department. I hate going to work every day because no one there is my friend and pretty much everyone is hostile to me. What should I do? Any advice?

• Why does my Perl CGI script raise an internal server error on Apache?

  I've installed apache2 on Ubuntu 11.04, and localhost is working. I created a simple printenv.pl script and put it in the following directory $ mv printenv.pl /usr/lib/cgi-bin/ $ chmod +rx /usr/lib/cgi-bin/printenv.pl However when I go to http://127.0.0.1/cgi-bin/printenv.pl, I get a 500 Internal Server Error I checked the error log at /var/log/apache2, and this is what it says: [Mon Oct 24 11:04:25 2011] [error] (13)Permission denied: exec of '/usr/lib/cgi-bin/printenv.pl' failed [Mon Oct 24 11:04:25 2011] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] Premature end of script headers: printenv.pl Any suggestions on how I can fix this and run CGI scripts on my localhost?

• What micro web-framework has the lowest overhead but includes templating

  I want to rewrite a simple small (10 page) website and besides a contact form it could be written in pure html. It is currently built with classic asp and Dreamweaver templates. The reason I'm not simply writing 10 html pages is that I want to keep the layout all in 1 place so would need either includes or a masterpage. I don't want to use Dreamweaver templates, or batch processing (like org-mode) because I want to be able to edit using notepad (or Visual Studio) because occasionally I might need to edit a file on the server (Go Daddy's IIS admin interface will let me edit text). I don't want to use ASP.NET MVC or WebForms (which I use in my day job) because I don't need all the overhead they bring with them when essentially I'm serving up 9 static files, 1 contact form and 1 list of clubs (that I aim to use jQuery to filter). The shared hosting package I have on Go Daddy seems to take a long time to spin up when serving aspx files. Currently the clubs page is driven from an MS SQL database that I try to keep up to date by manually checking the dojo locator on the main HQ pages and editing the entries myself, this is again way over the top. I aim to get a text file with the club details (probably in JSON or xml format) and use that as the source for the clubs page. There will need to be a bit of programming for this as the HQ site is unable to provide an extract / feed so something will have to scrape the site periodically to update my clubs persistence file. I'd like that to be automated - but I'm happy to have that triggered on a visit to the clubs page so I don't need to worry about scheduling a job. I would probably have a separate process that updates the persistence that has nothing to do with the rest of the site. Ideally I'd like to use Mercurial (or git) to publish, I know Bitbucket (and github) both serve static page sites so they wouldn't work in this scenario (dynamic pages and a contact form) but that's the model I'd like to use if there is such a thing. My requirements are: Simple templating system, 1 place to define header, footers, menu etc., that can be edited using just notepad. Very minimal / lightweight framework. I don't need a monster for 10 pages Must run either on IIS7 (shared Go Daddy Windows hosting) or other free host

  ASP.NET MVC 4 introduces new methods for style and scripts bundling. I found something brilliant there I want to introduce you. In this posting I will show you how easy it is to include whole folder with stylesheets or JavaScripts to your page. I’m using ASP.NET MVC 4 Internet Site template for this example. When we open layout pages located in shared views folder we can see something like this in layout file header: <link href="@System.Web.Optimization.BundleTable.Bundles.ResolveBundleUrl("~/Content/css")" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />    <link href="@System.Web.Optimization.BundleTable.Bundles.ResolveBundleUrl("~/Content/themes/base/css")" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />    <script src="@System.Web.Optimization.BundleTable.Bundles.ResolveBundleUrl("~/Scripts/js")"></script> Let’s take the last line and modify it so it looks like this: <script src="/Scripts/js"></script> After saving the layout page let’s run browser and see what is coming in over network. As you can see the request to folder ended up with result code 200 which means that request was successful. 327.2KB was received and it is not mark-up size for error page or directory index. Here is the body of response: I scrolled down to point where one script ends and another one starts when I made the screenshot above. All scripts delivered with ASP.NET MVC project templates start with this green note. So now we can be sure that the request to scripts folder ended up with bundled script and not with something else. Conclusion Script and styles bundling uses currently by default long syntax where bundling is done through Bundling class. We can still avoid those long lines and use extremely short syntax for script and styles bundling – we just write usual script or link tag and give folder URL as source. ASP.NET MVC 4 is smart enough to combine styles or scripts when request like this comes in.

• Best Practices To Build a Product Registration System?

  What are some practices I should use in a product registration system I'm building? I likely can't stop all malicious hacking, but I'd like to slow them down a great deal. (Note, I know only PHP.) • Is it okay to be generalist?

  I work at a ~50 employee company (UK), where all the technical people do a bit of everything. Specialising in anything for very long (6 months) is discouraged. For example, last week, I built a new Debian webserver, refactored some Perl, sat on a sales phone call, did a tape backup, reviewed code, built and deployed an RPM, gave opinions about x, y, z... With such a work scheme, I have gained a general knowledge how many things work, and pretty specific knowledge. I maybe program for 5 hours a week, despite officially being a developer. Does anyone else work like this, (or is this company unique)? Is it a problem to have skills developed in this way? (i.e. know a bit about everything in a certain domain, rather than know everything about say, one programming language?) Is it okay to be a generalist?

  I'm making a group of two or three simple javascript games for fun. After someone finishes one game, they'll be presented with a harder or easier version of another game depending on whether the original game was won or lost. I have a high-level question about the design of things: So far I've created a class for one game type that manages the interaction with the UI and the state of the game itself. But for tracking how many of the subgames have been won, or for understanding whether the next game presented should be more or less difficult, are there arguments to be made for making a 'game engine' class? How does the engine communicate to the games? For instance, when a game is won, how is that information relayed to the engine? Is there a better or more common design? Needless to say I was really looking forward to his session. He basically addressed the topic of distractions and how they can decrease or increase your productivity as a developer. He makes the case that in order to become more productive you must block/limit all distractions. For example, he covered his top distractions as a developer. Top Distractions Social Media(Twitter, Reddit, Facebook) Wiki sites Phone Email Video Games Coworkers, Friends, Family Michael stated that he uses various types of music to help him block out these distractions in order for him to get into his coding zone. While he states that music works for him, he also notes that he knows of others that cannot really work with music. I have to say I am in the latter group because I require a quiet environment in order to work. A few session attendees also recommended listening to really loud white noise or music in another language other than your own. This allows for less focus to be placed on words being sung compared to the rhythmic beats being played. I have to say that I have not tried these suggestions yet but will in the near future. However, distractions can be very beneficial to productivity in that they give your mind a chance to relax and not think about the issues at hand. He spoke highly of taking vacations, and setting boundaries at work so that develops prevent the problem of burnout. One way he suggested that developer’s combat distractions is to use the Pomodoro technique. In his example he selects one task to do for 20 minutes and he can only do that task during that time. He ignores all other distractions until this task or time limit is complete. After it is completed he allows himself to relax and distract himself for another 5- 10 minutes before his next Pomodoro. This allows him to stay completely focused on a task and when the time is up he can then focus on other things.

• Managing Personal Projects As Solo Developer - Getting out of depth and failing projects

  I need some advice on project management. I start a project, and often times it will a large project for a solo developer. Usually its a web project. I handle everything from the UI, to the JS, PHP, server management etc. Half way in I feel out of my depth. I lose where I am, so I spend a couple of days away from the project to avoid the stress and before you know it, it becomes another unfinished project. I try to use frameworks and code libraries to make my developments easier on myself. Sometimes I will complete a project so it "works" and then go back and handle errors, design the UI properly and stuff. But without fail I will always end up out of my depth. I've though about outsourcing tasks such as the UI, and the behaviour, and focusing just on the PHP - which I feel is my strong point. But then pride kicks in, and I don't feel at one with a project I haven't completed myself. Does this make sense? I am sure there are many others who have felt like this either at home, or at work, and I would love some advice on managing my projects better.

• Advice for someone moving from Windows / Coldfusion / Java to Linux / Ruby / Rails

  Hi all I am thinking of undertaking a serious career move. Currently I work day to day with ColdFusion 9+, and some Java in a Windows environment. My background is Java/JSP etc prior to ColdFusion. I'm considering a move towards Ruby / Rails on Linux as I think it would be a real challenge, keep things fresh and would stand me in good stead for the next few years. There are also more jobs in this area. I would consider myself an experienced web professional. I do TDD and I understand good OO design concepts. I have worked for the past few years on a busy transactional gaming website with all the security and performance challenges that entails. I have also contributed to an open source ColdFusion project recently and I am a active member of the CF community on StackOverflow . In order to maintain my current remuneration (!) etc. I would like to get up to speed on Ruby / Rails and Linux before I go job hunting. The idea is that I can demonstrate enough proficiency in these new skills and combined with my other language / programming / architectural and performance experience I have I'll be a good candidate. I am building a personal website in Rails 3.0 on Ubuntu which I hope will expose me to lots of Rails/Ruby and I am reading a few books. What else can I do? Has anyone made this type of move, and if so would they have any tips apart from what I've mentioned? Is there any areas around Rails/Ruby/Linux that I have to get up to speed with? Any and all tips are appreciated.

The absence of real world deadlines, customer feedback, or performance reviews leaves me free to daydream about having and implementing The Next Great Idea That Changes the World. Of course I'm aware I probably have a better chance of winning the lottery, but it's fun to imagine knocking out some fully-homebrewed app that destroys the status quo. I know many professional programmers have side projects, some for profit others not. I was wondering on the way to work this morning (non-IT boring work) if having to code for your food tended to dampen the dreaming? Does greater experience leave you jaded and more focused on the projects at hand? Not trying to be a downer, just interested in the mindset of the real software professional :-)

• Role of Sharepoint experience in career growth

  I am from India. I was a Mainframe developer for first 2 years of my IT career and then shifted to Microsoft .Net and completed 3 years as of now. In these 3 years as a .Net developer i have worked only in core .Net skills like Asp .Net, Sql Server with C# .Net. I never worked in advance skills like Web Services or WCF or silverlight etc. In current world market scenario, I feel Sharepoint experience weighs more than the WCF, Web Services work experience for a .Net Developer.(Please correct if wrong). So i am planning to study Sharepoint through some training centre and complete a Sharepoint certification. The main reason for me to go for Sharepoint is that i feel it is a niche skill and it will help me to get a job in abroad location in future. Please let me know whether sharepoint can help me to get a job in foreign location. I would also like to know whether, Is it possible to master Sharepoint without any experience in skills like WCF, Web Services etc? Is it possible to get a sharepoint job just with knowledge and certification in it? Incase if sharepoint will not offer me career growth, then can you please suggest me the skills which will offer great career growth (like foreign jobs) for me as a .Net developer?

• Spam prevention through IP tracking

  I am building a website with user generated comments. In order to implement user moderation/spam-protection, users have the ability to mark comments as spam. When one comment is marked as spam, I want all comments from the same IP address to be deleted. I am not familiar with spam prevention in general, other than Captcha. • Tool to identify (and remove) unnecessary website files?

Before I build one myself, are there any tools out there that will drill through a website and list unlinked files? • what is a normal developer to pageview ratio?

  I work for an e-commerce site that has lately been shedding its workforce. I was hired ten months ago as a UI Developer. At that time we had three other developers. One was the technical lead who had been with the company for 10 years. The other two were server-side developers who had been there for 10 and 3.5 years respectively. In ten months, the technical lead left for a better position, one developer was laid off, and the other very recently left. So, I am now the only developer on staff. We have one DBA and one network administrator. They are currently looking to hire another developer but are not willing to pay enough to hire a senior person. I consider myself a junior developer with two years of experience. I have argued that we need to hire at least one senior developer and another junior developer if we're going to keep our current site operational (not to mention develop new features)...even if that means laying off staff in other departments. Right now we get 6.5 million pageviews per month, and I feel like 3.2 million pageviews per developer must be incredibly abnormal. My question is then: what is a normal developer to pageview ratio? Are there any industry standards or literature on the subject that I can use to argue for more staff?

• Facebook PHP SDK and Wordpress Error

  I have a developer environment setup with WAMP, Wordpress, and PHPEdit IDE. I use the Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube API's in a sidebar. I'm using Facebook's PHP SDK to display information(no login or admin functions). Since the FB SDK and WP use session_start() I get the following warning: Warning: session_start() [function.session-start]: Cannot send session cache limiter - headers already sent (output started at C:\wamp\www\dfi\wp-content\themes\DFI\header.php:12) in C:\wamp\www\dfi\wp-content\themes\DFI\api\facebook.php on line 36 I'm trying to figure this out by using the warning output but it doesn't help considering the following. I know about clearing white space and characters before and after <?php ?> and placing session_start() before any http output. I use unix line enders and UTF8 encoding without BOM. My host server is not set up for output_buffering. header.php line 11 to 13 11 <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> 12 <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" <?php language_attributes();?>> 13 <head> It looks like the warning comes from inline php code.   I see the term "enterprise" being thrown around software developers and programmers a lot and used loosely it seems. en·ter·prise/'ent?r?priz/ Noun: A project or undertaking, typically one that is difficult or requires effort. Initiative and resourcefulness. Can someone please clarify what this term actually encompasses? "At an enterprise level", "enterprise scale"? There are even "enterprise editions" of things. What exactly does it mean? It obviously doesn't make sense judging by the above definition so more specifically to software what does one mean when using the word enterprise? EDIT: To add a spin on this - how does this term then fit into phrases such as Enterprise Framework Model? What does data access and data context have to do with company-wide descriptions?
