• How can I get my Sapphire Radeon 7850 to output in "1080p"?

  I have a Radeon 7850 connected to a Vizio 3D compatible TV. The TV has a function to parse and display SBS encoded content. On my old graphics card (a Radeon 5770) I just had to select the 1080p option in the catalyst control center. In this mode my TV reported the output mode as "1080p", with the new card the TV reports "1920x1080". I cannot figure out what the difference in between the 2 signals but the "1920x1080" cannot be switched into 3D mode by the TV. Weirdly, before windows starts the (in the Bios and so forth) the computer outputs in "1080p" so I know the card is capable of it. As soon as the blue login screen comes up though it changes back to the "1920x1080". I've tried everthing I can think of. Updated my drivers from 13.3b3 to 13.4, then even tried the 13.5 beta (Which I'm still on this moment). Tried all the "optimized" HD settings in catalyst, even the 720p modes show the resolution from the TV and not the "720p" (which it used to do on the old card when I had to lower the resolution of games)

• Booting a GPT USB key on older BIOS laptop

  I have an old HP EliteBook 8530p, which does not support booting from GPT USB (GPT HDDs are fine though). Lately I had the wish to have a fast-to-start OS for browsing, smaller web tasks, etc., so I grabbed a ChromeOS build (latest one by ArnoldTheBat), flashed it on an 8GB flash drive, and popped it in. It did not boot, so I dug deeper and discovered that it actually is GPT, and cannot be converted to MBR. As my laptop does not support UEFI booting from USB (there's a really-really beta UEFI support in the BIOS, but as I said, it only supports GPT hard drives, not USB devices), I'm stuck. Is there any way of booting it, say, another flash drive with a specific boot loader/manager (e.g. Plop)?

• Windows 7 Locking Executable Files

  Since I've been using Windows 7 RTM (as opposed to the Beta and RCs), I've been having a peculiar issue with executable files. I first noticed it whilst using Visual Studio, in that when building a project, it would often fail saying that the output file was locked - but the problem has stemmed further. When I've executed an application, closed it (cleanly), and attempted to delete/move/rename/overwrite said file, Windows 7 tells me that the file is locked/access is denied. I've made use of software like LockHunter/Unlocker but it is seemingly unable to remove these locks (most of the time, it shows no locks at all). After about 5-10 minutes, the respective files are unlocked again, but needless to say this is a bit of a workflow-breaker (as it's not simply constrained to VS). I've done the usual tasks of virus/malware scanning, and turned up with absolutely nothing. I've got no peculiar services running, and the problem was not present before I installed a Windows 7 RTM version. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  In my ArrayList, i have get a random Item from my ArrayList for the equip method. Whenever i use my tester, the terminal window prints java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: n must be positive when I try to call random for the size. • Automation of software installation - should I ask for text or file?

  I am preparing a software installation in Windows environment for my application. During installation it asks for Subscriber ID which should be entered into text field. I am wondering if it is a best solution for mass installations. I know that for mass installations IT teams use systems like Microsoft System Center which allow automate deployment. But I do not know much about capabilities of such systems. Can such system automate data entry into the text fields? Will it be better to change installation process and ask not a text but a file which contains Subscriber ID? By the way, I am looking for beta testers for my software. This software let user view Microsoft Project files without having Microsoft Project installed.

• Is it possible to have an external server within a company's firewall?

  Hi guys, I am sure this is server admin 101, but I am unsure of the answer and would love some help. I am a software developer I have built an application for a client and am currently hosting it successfully on SliceHost. We are now coming out of Beta and the client wants to have the application within their firewall, but they do not want to deal with headache of hosting and maintaining the server. Is there a way I can recommend that we put our server at SliceHost within their Firewall? Is that an easy thing to do? Their specific requirements are: For my application to authenticate against their Active Directory, and Only allow access to the application from within their network If that is not possible, what should I recommend to my client?

• SharePoint 2010 MySites - Simple explanation needed!

  I've been playing around with the 2010 beta for a couple of weeks, experimenting with topology options etc. I think I've got myself totally confused as to how it works hence if there's any SP experts out there that can explain things in simple terms for me I'd appreciate it! I want to setup a farm with 3 servers providing the content & MySites. I presume that the way to do this is to load balance or DNS round robin traffic between the 3 servers. The bit where I'm confused is that My Site Settings page asks for a specific My Site Host hence all my site traffic will be pushed to a single server even though we have 3 in the farm. If this hosts fails I presume MySites will be unavailable. Is this right? How do I configure it so that access to MySites is load balanced across the 3 servers in the farm?

• Why is calling close() after fopen() not closing?

I wrote a tester program and found that I could GetFD 509 times, but the 510th time would error. Using Process Explorer, the number of Handles did not increase. So it seems that the dll is reaching the limit for the number of open files; setting _setmaxstdio(2048) does increase the amount of times we can call GetFD. Obviously, the close() is working quite right. After a bit of searching, I replaced the fopen() call with: long GetFD(long* fd, const char* fileName, const char* mode) { *fd = (long)open(fileName, 2); if (*fd < 0) return -1; return 0; } Now, repeatedly calling GetFD/CloseFD works.   I just got Lexmark X4550 wireless printer and want to have it installed on my laptop Windows 7 Beta. I have installed using Lexmark drivers and doing a "add a printer" device search. But when I tried to print a document i got an error message: "Communication not available. The printer cannot communicate with the computer...". This pinter used to work perfectly on my Windows XP Pro SP3. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Make an empty DIV height and width of its container

  My HTML currently contains a background image that stretches with the viewport. Within that, I plan to place a div that stretches to the height and width of the viewport and has black background colour at 50% opacity. I've set the div to be 100% width and height. The div is not stretching and I can't figure out why! • My Network adapter "D-Link DWA-547" is causing windows 7 to freeze up.

  Any audio playing, and sometimes the program i am using is constantly stuttering and freezing up. I have narrowed the offending hardware down to my: D-Link DWA-547 RangeBooster N650 Desktop Adapter If i disable it in the device manager everything runs fine and smooth. The card works, and gives me super fast internet. But the rest of the system hangs. I have tried installing the card with the drivers from the cd that came with it, i also tried the lates beta drivers from the d-link webpage, but the problem persists. What do i do? I am running windows 7 x64 on a asus p5b motherboard with 2 intel processors.

• Is HDCP working for ATI/AMD cards on windows 8?

  I have an AMD 6950 and am running windows 8 RTM. I've tried the Catalyst 12.8 drivers and the 12.9 beta drivers. With either drive HDCP seems to be non operational. I've got two dell monitors, one a u2410 and the other a 2408wfp. Both were previously identified as supporting HDCP in windows 7 with the same hardware. I've tested the monitors individual on both DVI and display port, and neither one works. I'm using cyberlinks BD-Advisor to test. My end goal is getting the DirecTv2PC app working again, which is by cyberlink for DirecTV, and requires HDCP. Currently it shuts off when you start playing a recording.

• MediaPortal crash when scanning my TV Channels

  I tried installing MediaPortal on my old system. I installed & tried both beta & stable releases: Here's the old system specs: Windows XP SP3 512MB DDR 80GB IDE K-World PVR-TV7131 Analog TV-Tuner Inno3d FX5500 128MB 64bit When scanning through the TV-Server, it crashes. I don't know if the incompatibility comes from the hardware or the OS, but my TV Tuner's own Media center app works well. For now, that's what im using. Anyone here familiar with MediaPortal? • After installing Ubuntu how do I get rid of unity and go back to gnome?

  After I have installed the newest Ubuntu LTS release (12.04, still in beta though) I am greeted with an unfamiliar and difficult to use desktop environment. I believe it is called unity. However I have used gnome for a decade and a half and I would not like to move to this new and (for me) unusable desktop environment. What is a quick and easy way to remove (most) of unity and bring back gnome, as well as configure my display manager to load gnome by default with the environment as close as possible to the way it was before?

• What Test Environment Setup do Committers Use in the Ruby Community?

  Today I am going to get as far as I can setting up my testing environment and workflow. I'm looking for practical advice on how to setup the test environment from you guys who are very passionate and versed in Ruby Testing. By the end of the day (6am PST?) I would like to be able to: Type one 1-command to run test suites for ANY project I find on Github. Run autotest for ANY Github project so I can fork and make TESTABLE contributions. Build gems from the ground up with Autotest and Shoulda. For one reason or another, I hardly ever run tests for projects I clone from Github. The major reason is because unless they're using RSpec and have a Rake task to run the tests, I don't see the common pattern behind it all. I have built 3 or 4 gems writing tests with RSpec, and while I find the DSL fun, it's less than ideal because it just adds another layer/language of methods I have to learn and remember. So I'm going with Shoulda. But this isn't a question about which testing framework to choose. So the questions are: What is your, the SO reader and Github project committer, test environment setup using autotest so that whenever you git clone a gem, you can run the tests and autotest-develop them if desired? What are the guys who are writing the Paperclip Tests and Authlogic Tests doing? What is their setup? Thanks for the insight. Looking for answers that will make me a more effective tester.

• Updating to Exchange 2013 - any way to do it now?

  Exchange 2013 is out, available for some epople already. Got if from the VLC Center, now trying to get an upgrade path that works for some customers. Problem: There is no upgrade. It is "install on new Server, move mailboxes. This means coexistence with Exchagne 2010 for the time to move the Mailbox. Sadly the only compatible Exchange is Exchange 2010 Sp3 - which is not going to be bout for quite some time. Any way to still do an update? Backup, restore to new Server? Any beta of the SP that is good enough to ONLY move the mailboxes? I do not care about the rest - this really is "install Exchange 2013, move mailboxes, UNINSTALL 2010". I am quite - ah - unhappy that at the end the only one who will be able to intall 2013 are new companies right now.

  Hello, I'm having the following problem. I'm installing SharePoint 2010 Beta so I need to activate the windows feature "Windows Communication Foundation Non-HTTP Activation". The problem is I cannot activate it, i get the message: "An error has occurred. Not all features were successfully changed" When i look at the log (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) I found this error: Process output: [l:186 [186]"SMConfigInstaller[Error]: Failed in calling 'StartService' for service 'NetTcpActivator'. Error code: 0x8007042c Anyone can give me a clue of what is happening here?

• BSOD doing wireless connection repair

  (This should maybe be asked on Super User, but currently it is only for beta users.) We have a Dell Latitude X1 which always gets a BSOD (page fault in non page area) after repair on wireless. Wireless works as long as we do not do repair. Have tried the following with no success: Have updated BIOS to latest version and updated drivers for Intel wireless to the latest version. Any other suggestions? For now we just do not do repair and maybe that is the solution?

• JasperReports reports access image via authenticated URL

  Hi all, I am hoping that this is a simple issue with a simple solution and that I have missed something obvious. Let me explain the problem; We have an application that generates PDF reports (using Jasper). These reports contain data from our database, as well as imagery (photographs). These photographs are stored in S3. We use signed URLs to access these photographs. We link these photographs into our Jasper reports using these S3 URLs. Because the S3 URLs are signed and time-limited (by design), the process is as follows; User requests a report to be generated, Report is filled, and goes to our database (at which time UUIDs to any required images are retrieved), For each UUID an S3 signed URL must be generated, To do this the URL behind each report image is a call to an authenticated URL in our app (/get_img?uuid=foo), The controller behind this URL generates a signed S3 URL and returns it, Reports loads the image. The problem is with step (4) - the call to the authenticated URL fails because Jasper does not pass any authentication information with the request. Is there a solution here? • CSS3PIE issues in IE6 and 8

  I'm using CSS3PIE to apply some rounded corners to elements in Internet Explorer that will get them by stylesheet in other browsers. I've run into some issues with it though. In IE8, I discovered that any element that had the PIE behaviour would behave strangely. The container would jump a few pixels to the right, but the content would stay in its original position, giving the appearance that the content had all shifted left relative to its container. This would be especially problematic on elements with no or small amounts of padding. I was able to hack my way around the problem in IE8 by using X-UA-Compatible, but I'd rather avoid this solution if at all possible. I don't have access to IE9 for testing but my understanding hacks like PIE aren't necessary and it would be wasteful to force a compatibility mode in a browser that doesn't need it. I have worse issues in IE6, with the PIE layout breaking down completely on a list that is set up to use display:inline; zoom:1; list items (to simulate inline-block, which works in IE8 and the other browsers). Here the borders of the list items get rendered in completely the wrong place. So ideally, I'd like to have PIE work properly in IE6, and in IE8 without having to resort to compatibility mode. As far as IE6 goes, a graceful fallback where PIE is just not applied will do. IE7 is the only browser where the page displays as intended. I can't provide an example page just at the moment unfortunately, I can add one later though. Follow up: Here are some screen grabs made with IE Tester. I'm hoping they will make things a little more clear for everybody. As you can see, IE7 is fine. However, in IE8, the containers are offset to the left relative to their content, and in IE6 the list elements (with the rounded 1 pixel border) are a complete mess! • Make symlink on Windows of whole tree without modifying the original folder

  I'm trying to do this: make a symlink of a whole directory "C:/Master", in different folders like "C:\Projects\Alpha\", "C:\Projects\Beta\" an so on. "Master" directory usually changes in files and data. I work on the "Projects/*", where every project folder uses the "Master" files, but every one has new files in them. Let's say, I point to the car engine in every project folder, and inside them I add different kind of wheels. The problem I'm having, as a Windows 8 user, is that symlinks (junction) acts as a window to "Master" - I'm not allowed to add any file inside. I looking a way to reference the entire "Master" directory, and add new files - not edit any of the "Master" ones. It's as described here, but on Windows.

• grub2 error: out of disk

  I'm trying to make a 250G USB hard disk Ubuntu-bootable on a Compaq nc6220 laptop. I've removed all other disks, so /dev/sda (the USB disk) is the only disk other than CDROM. I installed Ubuntu 9.10 to this disk from the live CD, putting the bootloader on /dev/sda . The default system couldn't be booted, and nothing I did in the Grub menu/cmdline helped. So I chrooted onto the disk and did grub-install /dev/sda. That seemed to work fine, but Grub (1.97 beta 4) keeps coming up with error: out of disk Even when I drop to the command line to do something simple like ls or help, it's always the same error message. Any hints for resolving this, please?

• Root access amazon ec2

  Hey guys, I am very new to linux, and amazon-ec2. I wanted to put a quick server. For some reason, when I sign in with my key pair, it prompts me for a username, I input ec2-user, and I'm in. The problem is that I don't have root access (and can't find the root password). I need to install screen to run the server in the background, and also create a new user, that doesn't have root, to run the server. Neither of which I can do without root.. Any help? Edit: I am using Basic 32-bit Amazon Linux AMI 2010.11.1 Beta as the 'AMI'. Thanks, Max

• how to protect from editing or converting to text a pdf file?

  I am using a version of Ms Office of 2010, it was a beta version of public domain (I dont recall the name, but I believe it was called Blue version or something like that). I usually make my documents using the MS Word and then saving it like a pdf file using the function to publish as a pdf file within Word. The problem that I have is that some people are converting my documents into text, putting their name on it, and credited my work to them; so I would like to know if there is a way to: protect with a password the editing of my document protect it from converting into txt, with a password if its possible maybe but a digital signature in which it says my name as an author I want that the people who access it can only read it, and nothing more. I am using MS Word 2010 and Foxit Pdf (an old version), I usually do not use Adobe Acrobat. Thanks
