• ESXi 5 network performance is slow

  We just did a fresh install of ESXi 5 on a host that was running ESX 4 before. Nothing has changed hardware wise. After the upgrade network performance is much slower. Even copying a big file from one VM to another VM within same virtual switch is slower compared to other hosts that are running ESX 4. Network cards are auto-negotiating at 1Gbps as were on ESX 4 prior to upgrade. All settings are default and I haven't played with Advanced Settings at all. Before opening a case with vmware, wanted to know if I am missing something or if others have experienced similar issues and found a fix?

• Dreamweaver not loading due to workspace file problem

  I went to launch Dreamweaver CS 5.5 and this message popped up: XML parsing fatal error: Invalid document structure, line 1, file C:\Documents...(file path)...Workspace\My Workspace.xml It was followed by The following panel layout is missing or could not be read: C:...My Workspace.xml The application will not have a correct layout. Please load one from WindowsWorkspace After that, Dreamweaver acted as if it was going to load, but never did. When I tried to close the program, it crashed. I followed the file path and I saw two files: My Workspace.xml 0kb and My Workspace 5kb. The second one has an unknown file type. I deleted the first file and renamed the unknown file type to My Workspace.xml; everything worked fine after that point. Why did Dreamweaver do this? This has happened several times, but I have not changed anything that should affect that file type.

• Cannot change permissions in symlinked dropbox directory in Ubuntu 10.10

  Title pretty much says it all, but here's what I'm doing... ls -l produces this... drwx------ 1 brian brian 4096 2010-12-28 14:19 foldername -rw------- 1 brian brian 0 2010-12-28 15:54 index.html after typing something like chmod o=rx index.html the output of ls -l is the same. This happens whether or not I'm in the original location or the symlink location. However, as a further twist, the output of chmod -v o=rx index.html is the following: mode of `index.html' changed to 0605 (rw----r-x) The location is also being symlinked to by apache. What's going on with my permissions?

  Our users have a toolbar on their Windows taskbar called "I Need Help". It holds links to our support system with specific fields prefilled. We've changed some of the structure our our support system and need to replace the links inside the folder. Some of the links have different names and some are being completely removed. Ideally we just want to clear the folder and replace it with a new set of files. What's the best way to do this through Group Policy Preferences in Windows Server 2008?

• Why does Mac OS X ignore my Windows NTFS and Share permissions?

  Mac OS X Snow Leopard Windows Server 2003 Windows Folder "Videos" Share Permissions on Videos - Everyone NTFS Permissions on Videos - System (Full Control) - Domain Users (Modify) - Domain Admins (Full Control) Mac user Michael is a part of the Domain Users group. He connects to Videos using cifs://server/Videos and authenticates with his username Michael. Michael copies over a file "dance dance baby.avi". User Jon opens the Videos folder but cannot see the dance dance baby.avi file. Checking the dance dance baby.avi file permissions here is what I see: Everyone - Read, Write Domain Admins - Full Control Michael - Read, Write Owner of File - Michael So here's my question, how come when Michael copies a file over from a Mac, the permissions on the file get changed even though Michael has no rights to change permissions? If the same file is copied over from a Windows machine, it just inherits the proper permissions from the parent Video folder. Am I missing something? Are my permissions wrong? Thanks. Michael

• 3ds Max with Parallels on a MacBook Pro

  I am trying to get 3ds Max to run under Parallels on my 15'' MacBook Pro, but it is ultimatly failing. To get any decent frame rate I have to put all the setting to low, but even then I get weird graphical "gliches" when I play. Controlls are unresponsive and very laggy as well. I have increased the video memory to 256mb, but that doesn't seem to have helped. What else should I do to make the game playable? Mod-edit: I changed TF2 with a "random" 3D modelling software, which solves gaming related issues.

• Excel hyperlink not redirecting properly (bug?)

  I don't know is this is the right place to post this questions, but I have an excel hyperlink problem. Here's the thing. I click on let's say "A1", copy the link in it (http://www.godaddy.com/domains/searchresults.aspx?ci=54814), right click on hyperlink and copy that SAME URL as the link (if it is not automatically detected and changed). When I go to click on it, I am readirected to http://www.godaddy.com/domains/search.aspx?ci=53972. If I copy and paste the link directly into the browser, it works fine. • Problem after resizing partition for Fedora under Vmware fusion

  Hi, I am running FC9 under VMware Fusion 3.0 I wanted to resize my /dev/sda2 partition. In order to do that I did the following: 0. changed the size of the vmware file (under VMware settings). 1. rebooted the host to rescue mode without mounted disks 2. fdisk - removed & added /dev/sda2 - i had bigger /dev/sda2 3. lvm pvresize /dev/sda2 4. lvm pvdisplay - it showed me bigger size on /dev/VolGroup00 for /dev/sda2 5. lvm vgchange -a y - device-mapper: reload ioctl failed: Invalid argument - 2 logical volume(s) in volume group "VolGroup00" now active This is not true because there is no /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 My whole "/" disappeared. dmsetup table, shows: VolGroup00-LogVol01: 0 2097152 linear 8:2 38338944 VolGroup00-LogVol00: Can some one help me to solve this?   I'm running nginx 1.3.5 under windows seven, I need to execute nginx directly from a read-only media (CD or DVD), but when I want to run it, it fails with this error: nginx: [alert] could not open error log file: CreateFile() "logs/error.log" fail ed (5: Access is denied) 2012/08/28 13:52:46 [emerg] 5604#2864: CreateDirectory() "J:\nginx-1.3.5/temp/client_body_temp" failed (5: Access is denied) where J is my CD-ROM drive letter. I've changed nginx.conf to disable logging completely, but seems anyway it still tries to build a file named 'error.log' in '/logs' folder & some extra temporary contents in '/temp' folder at the startup, so I want to change 'logs' & 'temp' directory path to windows temp folder (%temp%), but I dont have any idea that how can I do it. Also I want to know why nginx still creates 'logs/error.log' after disableing error logging ?

• Postfix Not Sending Email to Some Addresses?

  I'm using Jetpack on Wordpress, and it wasn't working. I was getting the following error: Diagnostic-Code: X-Postfix; unknown user: "jake" --60FD1138CAD.1354039466/example.com Content-Description: Undelivered Message (example.com substituted for our domain) We set up a test mail function, and that wasn't sending either. We changed the email to an outside email and it worked. Any thoughts why it won't send to an email that is at the same domain? Or why it sends to some emails but not others? • Not able to run discovery in XenApp 6.5

  I am installing a fresh Citrix farm. I installed XenApp 6.5 and configured while configuring the XenApp, added domain\ctxadmin user as the farm administrator. Now when i log into Administrator account into the XenApp server and run discovery it says This user account is not an administrator of this farm, or there was a problem contacting the data store. Check that the data store server for the Citrix XenApp farm is online, and verify that your account is configured and enabled as an administrator on the farm Then I tried to RDP into the XenApp server as ctxadmin user and now I get an error "The Desktop you are trying to open is currently unavailable. Contact you system administrator to confirm the correct settings are in place for your client connection" I believe starting from XenApp version 6.x, once XenApp is installed, then a Citrix Policy needs to be changed as given in http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX124745 But for changing the Citrix policy I need to log into AppCenter which I am not able to do so as I am not able to run discovery as given above. So I am caught up in an end-less loop. Any help would be greatly appreciated

• Chinese IME - Shape toggle key won't save

  Hello everyone, Whenever I use Google IME or other IMEs like Sogou, I always encounter the same problem: half/full-width toggle. It's easy to set half-width by default in ime prefs, but toggle key is maintained by Windows, and here the fun begins. I use Win7 x64 Ultimate. Open the "Text services and input languages", go to "Advanced key settings". Here I see "Chinese (Simplified) IME - Shape Toggle" is set to "Shift+Space". When I try to change it, it appears as if it has changed, but if you click on "Apply" instead of "OK", or just open the window again, you can see it's still "Shift+Space". The same happens with disabling this toggle - disables and goes back on Apply or reopen. Not sure if it's a bug in Win7, so asking here. Please save me. :) Thanks!

  Hello, I have an Nvidia GeForce 6100 and using XP. I also have a SmartBoard. my brightness settings are completely changed and are not good. I tried changing the settings at the Nvidia GeForce 6100 nForce 430 color correction settings. I cannot get any ideal, it's just way to bright, what do i have to do? I already tried my monitor brightness settings and the smartboard brightness settings. it does not matter. I think there are problems with the pixels. How can i fix this? Is there something wrong with my video card?

  Using wget command, how do I allow/instruct to overwrite my local file everytime, irrespective of how many times I invoke. Let's say, I want to download a file from the location: http://server/folder/file1.html Here, whenever I say wget http://server/folder/file1.html, I want this file1.html to be overwritten in my local system irrespective of the time it is changed, already downloaded, etc. My intention/use case here is that when I call wget, I'm very sure that I want to replace/overwrite the existing file. • How to set Virtualbox appliance as webdev portable sollution?

  I just want to set a a Virtualbox virtual appliance to make it portable. Meaning that I'll enable a network config which will not need to be changed when I am using my laptop in a different network. I want the virtual machine to have internet access to keep it updated and be able to always have direct access from host using, for example, the IP 10.0.2.100 even when I am in a 192.168.0.1 network. So the first virtual network adapter will have a static ip (10.0.2.100) and the second will receive it from the DHCP. I don't know if 2 virtual adapters are needed or just one to accomplish that.

• Apache doesn't start on Windows XP Professional SP3

  I have XAMPP installed on my PC, and it works fine. Every service starts fine except Apache. I went to Services in Administrative Tools, and tried to start it from there, without success. I tried XAMPP Shell to run Apache by typing: xampp_cli start apache. That didn't work, either. I also tried reinstallling XAMPP, turning my computer off/on, restoring the registry from when I first installed XAMPP when Apache worked but still, nothing changed. Any ideas as to what could be causing this problem?

• IPFW not locking people out

  I've had some brute-forcing of my ssh connection recently, so I got fail2ban to hopefully prevent that. I set it up, and started testing it out by giving wrong passwords on my computer. (I have physical access to the server if I need to unblock myself) However, it never stops me from entering passwords. I see in /var/log/fail2ban.log that fail2ban kicked in and banned me, and there's a ipfw entry for my IP, but I'm not locked out. I've changed the configuration around, and then tried just using the ipfw command myself, but nothing seems to lock me out. I've tried the following blocks: 65300 deny tcp from 10.0.1.30 to any in 65400 deny ip from 10.0.1.30 to any 65500 deny tcp from 10.0.1.30 to any My firewall setup has a "allow ip from any to any" rule after these though, maybe that's the problem? I'm using Mac OS 10.6 (stock ipfw, it doesn't seem to have a --version flag) Thanks in advance.

• IMAP/POP won't send allow emails to outside- New Dell PowerEdge 7310 running SBS 2011

  I have a brand new out of the box Dell PowerEdge T310 running SBS 2011. Our employees at our remote offices can't send emails to recipients outside of our own domain. The workstations at the same location as the server aren't having any problem. I would at this time like to say "Thanks a lot" to the super-minds at Microsoft for protecting our email server from rogue computers attempting to send fake emails. (Silly me I thought proper login and password conventions would handle that.) I know this is something dealing with relaying but thus far nothing from any posts I've read have changed anything. Honestly, if someone is crafty enough to guess one of our login/password combos, let them send emails through our server I don't care!

• Correct way to treat iptables init failure?

  Hi, I'm initializing my iptables rules via /etc/network/if-pre-up.d/iptables, using iptables-restore. This works fine, but I'm a bit worried about what would happen, if that script failed for some reason (maybe the saved iptables file is corrupt or whatever). In case the script failed, I'd like to: Start up my network interfaces without any iptables rules Start up OpenSSH server But not any other services like web server, ... (and maybe stop running instances) Is there a good canonical way to do that? Going into a lower init stage? - I haven't done that in a long time, and I think a lot about init has changed in recent years (?) - which stage should I drop to, and would the OpenSSH server and my network interfaces still run? • Is there a standard Mac OS X Snow Leopard home folder naming convention?

  I recently re-installed a fresh copy of Snow Leopard on my Mac. I was a bit surprised when the process completed it had changed the name of my home folder to use my name rather than my initials. This messed up all the paths in my Eclipse IDE workspace. I vaguely remember being asked if I use it for home or business use and wondered if something I did there has a bearing on the way the default name is assigned. • Does the OS X DHCP client support classless static routes (RFC3442)?

  Simply put: does Mac OS X support RFC3442? RFC3442 implements DHCP codes (121 and 249) to provide classless static routes to DHCP clients. I can only seem to find rather old information circa 2005-2008 which implies that OS X does not support RFC3442. Any chance this has changed recently and I'm just doing something wrong while setting it up? My anecdotal testing seems to confirm that OS X does not support RFC3442 but I'm looking for confirmation. If OS X still doesn't support RFC3442, what is an alternative method of pushing static routes to OS X clients?

• Nginx config rewriting subdomain name to 1st URI segment

  I'm unable to do the following nginx.conf rewrite: test.mysite.info to: mysite.info/test here's what i've tried: server { server_name test.mysite.info; rewrite ^ https://mysite.info/test/$request_uri; } I know my DNS (Route53 AWS) is correct b/c: test.mysite.info redirects to mysite.info (just not mysite.info/test) I have an Apache server handling mysite.com which using .htaccess I can rewrite test.mysite.com to mysite.com/test. I haven't changed anything else from the default nginx.conf installation so I'm totally confused as to why such a simple thing isn't working. Here is my full nginx.conf file if that is helpful.

• Search predictions broken in Chrome - reinstall didn't solve the problem

  I recently changed the default search engine to a custom google search URL (using baseUrl) with some additional parameters and removed all the rest of the search engines, and since then, the search predictions stopped working. I even tried to reinstall Chrome but as soon as I resync, the problem is back! Search predictions are just gone without option to fix!! In IE changing the search provider allows specifying a prediction (suggestion) provider, In chrome, once you change the default search engine, you'll never be able to have predictions again!! This is a terrible bug, I mean WTF!!! Is there any workaround to that? I posted a bug report a while ago but it seems no one looks at it. I'm about to give up on Chrome and go back to IE, the only good thing about Chrome is the Extension market and the AdBlocker (which I can find in IE as well). The perfrormance changes don't matter to me too much. Thanks

• Windows 7 locked out account

  I have a Win7 x64 computer. There was only one account (mine, created at installation, password protected, full administrative access with UAC enabled). To speed up the startup + login process I went to control userpasswords2 and unchecked that users need to enter password. By this operation my account has been changed to Guest type and an Administrator account has been created. This Administrator account has a small overlay icon with a downwards pointing arrow. My original password did not work; if I try leaving the password blank it says something like "Your account has been disabled. Contact your administrator." Contacting myself surprisingly did not help. As my account (which I am still able to access) is Guest, I have no rights to do anything. Is there a way to get my access back without reinstalling?
