  Hi, I have a variable, $var, that contains a string of characters, this is a dynamic variable that contains the values from inputs. $var could be 'abc', or $var could be 'blu', I want to match the string inside variable against an array, and return all the matches. $array = array("blue", "red", "green"); What is the correct syntax for writing the code in php, my rough code is below $match = preg_grep($var, $array); (incorrect syntax of course) I tried to put quotes and escape slashes, but so far no luck. Although, I can use alternate means to get all elements of my current PS1, I would really like to be able to reuse its definition instead of using these alternate means. • PHP mysql_real_escape_string() returning `NULL`

  I'm using PHP Version 5.1.6 and trying to escape a query string from my $_GET array. However my script is returning a NULL after it's escaped. It seems that mysql_escape_string() works fine, but it's deprecated, so I don't want to use it. Having checked over the phpinfo() the MySQL lib is all loaded fine from what I can see. Has anyone experienced this kind of thing before? $term = $_GET['q']; var_dump($term); // string(7) "richard" echo "<br />"; $sterm = mysql_real_escape_string($term, $db); var_dump($sterm); // NULL It's very strange to me, I can't imagine why this function wouldn't work.

  I'd like to query text containing a minus (-) Sign, e.g. foo-bar with a couchdb lucene fulltext query. Following lucene rules I'd have to escape the minus, resulting in foo\-bar Last I'd have to urlencode the backslash resulting in foo%5C-bar So the complete url would be: http://127.0.0.1:5984/_fti/local/db/_design/foo/by_subject?q=foo%5C-bar Neither works. The result is always split in two phrases "q":"default:foo default:bar" Leading to documents containing only foo or bar being found also. Thanks for your help!

• Looking for a managed image parser library (JPEG, BMP, PNG, GIF)

  I am writing a discussion board software that will have "avatar" images for the users. I want to resize any picture that gets uploaded to a reasonable size. I could easily do that with System.Drawing but that is relying on GDI+ which has hat security problems before. The problem is that the images are untrusted. So I thought of using a fully managed lib to solve that problem because managed code cannot escape the sandbox (of course it can, but only if the code is user-supplied which it is not in my case). So does anybody know of a managed image parser library for JPEG, BMP, PNG and GIF? If some format is missing than I will have to live with that. Edit: Paint.NET also relies on GDI+. You might be interested in the discussion below, too.

• How to avoid StaleObjectStateException when transaction updates thousands of entities?

  We are using Hibernate 3.6.0.Final with JPA 2 and Spring 3.0.5 for a large scale enterprise application running on tomcat 7 and MySQL 5.5. Most of the transactions in application, lives for less than a second and update 5-10 entities but in some use cases we need to update more than 10-20K entities in single transaction, which takes few minutes and hence more than 70% of times such transaction fails with StaleObjectStateException because some of those entities got updated by some other transaction. We generally maintain version column in all tables and in case of StaleObjectStateException we generally retry but since these longs transactions are anyways very long so if we keep on retrying then also I am not very sure that we'll be able to escape StaleObjectStateException. Also lot of activities keep updating these entities in busy hours so we cannot go with pessimistic approach because it can potentially halt many activities in system. Please suggest how to fix such long transaction issue because we cannot spawn thousands of independent and small transactions because we cannot afford messed up data in case of some failed & some successful transactions.

Neither: $("#SomeDropdown >option[value='a''b]&lt;p>']"); or $("#SomeDropdown >option[value='a\'b]&lt;p>']"); are returning the option. What is the correct way to escape values when using the "value=" selector?

  I have a problem setting the value of a textarea element with jquery's val(). Basically, I have a JSP file which receives a string parameter called 'text'. Java code: String text = (String) request.getParameter('text'); Now I want my textarea element to receive this text: Javascript code: $('#textarea_id').val('<%=text%>'); It works when my text doesnt contain quotes single quotes (and possibly other chars). For example, for text = test' this error happens: Uncaught SyntaxError: Unexpected token ILLEGAL $('#textarea_id').val('test''); I hope you guys understand. I need a way to encode this value... i tried using escape so the quote is replaced by %27, but after unescaping its replaced again and the error happens. Thanks!

• AutoComplete textbox and "Hide Pointer While Typing" in windows

  How can the "Hide Pointer While Typing" option be disabled by application? I'm having an issue with the cursor hiding and not getting it back without pressing escape or losing window focus. The application has been written in C# and uses WPF. A technology specific answer is not required because it'll likely be possible using any technology. Here's the scenario: A user can type in a TextBox and an AutoComplete list shows up below the box. Once the user starts typing though, he/she can no longer select an item from the drop down because there is no mouse cursor. I noticed that Firefox does not have this behavior. For example, while typing in a URL in the address bar the mouse cursor never disappears. There are other places I've seen this behavior so I know it must be possible. Any help is greatly appreciated!

• Display indented XML code within a HTML page

  I have a programmatically created HTML document on which I would like to show some XML-code, fully formatted with line breaks and tabulators. That is, it should look like if you drag an xml file without a xml-stylesheet directly onto your browser (most browsers do some kind of xml-rendering with some default style sheet). Now, I can of course escape all the characters (like <>, tab and newline) and do the indenting myself (using css styles, for example), but I was wondering whether I couldn't re-use some 'default' xml-stylesheet from somewhere. Preferrably also one that has some javascript node-folding, too. Do you know such a stylesheet/xslt? Or would you suggest another way to achieve this? I'm using C#. PS: I tried to use the XmlNotepad.DefaultSS.xslt from Microsoft's XmlNotepad, but I couldn't really get that working. :T

  My code tries to replace "," with "/" in a string. Should I escape "," in the regex string? Both of the two code snippets generated the same results, so I am confused. Code snippet 1: String test = "a,bc,def"; System.out.println(test.replaceAll("\\,", "/")); Code snippet 2: String test = "a,bc,def"; System.out.println(test.replaceAll(",", "/")); Should I use "," or "\,"?   Hello all, I've been working with Apache's Velocity engine and a custom template. The thing is, that I haven't been able to generate a String with the corresponding line breaks. I tried almost everything that I found, such as using $esc.n and $esc.newline (I'm already using escape tools on my project) but it seems that the version I'm currently using doesn't support it (1.4), checked if putting '\n', '\\n' and even '\\\n' would work, but same thing.   In a simple webapp I need to map URLs to filenames or filepaths. This app has a requirement that it can depend only on modules in the core Perl ditribution (5.6.0 and later). The problem is that filename length on most filesystems is limited to 255. Another limit is about 32k subdirectories in a single folder. • How can I lock the cursor to the inside of a window on Linux?

  I'm trying to put together a game for Linux which involves a lot of fast action and flinging around of the mouse cursor. If the user wants to play in windowed mode, I'd quite like to lock the cursor to the inside of the window to avoid accidentally changing programs in the heat of battle (obviously this will cancel itself if the user changes programs or hits escape for the pause menu.) On Windows, this can be accomplished easily with ClipCursor(). I can't find an equivalent on Linux. Is there one? I plan to do this in pure X code, but obviously if anyone knows of a way to do this in any Linux windowing library then I can just read the source code and figure out how to duplicate it in X.
